Video Transcript for Brophy Hitch Ball. Trailer Hitch Ball. CB-20Z Review

Today we’re going to take a look at the Brophy hitch ball, part number CB-20Z. This hitch ball has a 2″ diameter ball. It has a 5/8″ diameter shank. The shank is 1-5/8″ long. It’s machined from solid steel bars and is coated with a zinc finish, and is made right here in the U.S. It comes with the washer and nut, and I’m going to show you how you would put this on your ball mount using our trailer hitch demonstrator and one of our ball mounts.

You would just pop the shank into the ball hole there, put the washer right here, and then just finger tighten that. And then you’d want to get a wrench and tighten that further to ensure that there’s no rattle and that the hitch ball stays on firmly. That should just about do it for our Brophy hitch ball, part number CB-20Z.

CB-20Z Hitch Ball 2″ x 5/8″ x 1 5/8″. It was very hard to find a short shank 2″ hitch ball with 5/8″ threaded end. Lawn mower only had 5/8″ hole with no material to enlarge for larger size without severely weakening hitch plate. Thanks etrailer.com for having this CB-20Z Hitch Ball in stock. 144608

The hitch ball went on easy and is working as it should 1532211

Did you know most stores dont sell a 2″ ball with a 5/8″ shank? Well, Etrailer does. I just needed to move my little 5’×8′ flat bed trailer around with my mower. This trailer ball fit my needs perfectlyand was shipped lighning fast. as usual.awesome service and product from Etrailer.com. thx guys! 84379

I had installed a hitch on my Kubota ZD 1211 mower. So I could pull a log splitter and small utility trailer. Ball showed a day early and was as stated. Second time ordering from etrailer. I will continue to use you guys. Thanks. 791885

Only thing preventing me from giving a 5 star rating was that the threads were damaged in shipment. Not a major issue. I can chase the threads to make it usable. You may want to ship future units with the nut down at the end of the threaded shaft to prevent this issue.

Your service was prompt an courteous. 1440782

Just what I was looking for. fits perfectly. Hard to find 2 inch ball with 5/8 inch diameter shaft. Quick service. 138879

Was glad to locate this hard to find hitch ball to fit my Husqvarna mower. Everybody has them with 3/4 shanks, but I needed a 2 inch ball but with a 5/8″ threaded shank in order not to have to ream out the mount hole on the mower which would make it even weaker than it is. I need it to tow my utility trailer across the yard to where I park it, so as not to drive my truck on the yard. The ball is described as zinc plated but it is about as shiny as chrome. 199012

I still think this is a chrome ball. It has not rusted and it is still on my riding mower to use sometimes to move my utility trailer across the yard.

I looked locally in 7 different stores for this ball hitch. It needed to be 5/8 inch diameter on the shank to fit a lawn mower. This was a hard to find part locally and I located it on etrailer.com. Thanks for the quick service. 289188

I was happy to have found this little gem online, as no store around here has anything like this. The 5/8″ shank fits my 4wheeler, so I can use a small trailer that has a 2″ connector for work in my yard. 399342

great but hard to find size, got this specifically for my lawn tractor. now i can pull my boat and trailer around the yard, without the weight of my truck. shipping was very fast and payment made easy. thanks etrailer. 123125

I have a small Murray Lawn Mower. I also have a small 4 X 7 trailer. With the F150 that I drove. I cannot see the trailer to back it up my driveway. Once I found out they made a 2 inch ball with this smaller shaft/shank. I ordered it. This ball is a time saver. Not to mention a back saver as well.

ETrailer.com is a great company to order from. Good Price, and items are shipped quickly. I cannot wait to order my next time. 13558

Hard to find a 2″ ball on a 5/8″ shaft. etrailer has it all. Placed it on a riding mower to pull a 5X8 utility trailer for hauling brush. It is installed but I have not used the trailer yet. Good webpage and fast service. 272051

I know my contact was computer generated but this is the first time I have ever been contacted one year later to check on my purchase. First class vendor.

I have been searching for a trailer ball with a 1/2 inch shaft for a long time and came upon your web site and you had them. It was easy to place my order and it was shipped right away. thank you

etrailer.com is the only place on earth, apparently, to get a 2″ hitch ball with a small 5/8-inch diameter shank. Very handy for my garden tractor moving a bass boat trailer around our property. Furthermore, etrailer sends timely emails when the order is shipped, and has a very handy and easy to use tracking function to show the progress of one’s order in the shipping process. I’m very satisfied. 383025

I purchased this for use on a new lawn tractor that was made with a 5/8″ hitch hole for towing. This hitch ball fit the hole, was easy to install, and is well constructed. I am now able to tow my utility trailer in the yard by it’s 2″ hitch. etrailer is the only place that I could find this, and their service was great! 215394

The product was exactly what I was looking for, a 2″ tow ball with an 5/8″ diameter shank. Something you will not typically find in a store. When I am in Mariposa CA, where my mother lives, and attach the ball to the tractor, I will send two pictures. One picture with the ball attached to a Craftsman tractor and a second with the tractor towing a wood splitter. The purpose of this purchase is to be able to move the wood splitter around on her property to split wood that is too large to be moved first. 112306

Needed a 2″ hitch ball with 5/8″ shank for my 28 HP garden tractor. Need to tow off road street legal 4×8 dump trailer with either tractor or truck. Went to local trailer dealer. He didn’t have one, and doubted they exist. I’m glad I found etrailer.com. They had the ball in stock, shipped it super quick. Now my choice for trailer gear, esp. unusual stuff. 75520

Prompt service as always. Was having trouble finding a 2in. Tow ball with a 5/8 shank to fir my Polaris Sportsman 4-wheeler. Needed this set-up to pull my log splitter and bike trailer. Plenty of 1-7/8 tow balls with 5/8 shank but no 2in. Thought I was going to have to cut up a 2in. with large shank and weld on but you came through. Thank you for hard to find product and great service. 544814

I needed a 2″ ball with a 5/8″ shank to put on the back of my Ariens 46″ riding mower. I have a 5×10 utility trailer that I store behind my house out of sight. It’s much easier to use my mower to pull the trailer in and out as opposed to tearing up the grass with my truck tires twisting and turning. NO ONE local had a 2″ ball with the small 5/8″ shank to fit my mower. etrailer had it in stock. I ordered it on July 27th. it was in my mailbox on July 30th !! Great service, great price, fast shipping. product works great! Thanks etrailer! 216352

The Brophy ball is exactly as advertised. It mounts without modifications and does its job. 303477

I like the product. I could not find the 2″ ball in the store. Fleet Farm had the 1 7/8″ ball, so I have that one too. One thing I think I would like is a quick release pin. I bought this for my lawn tractor to pull my trailer around. But then when I want to use my other items I have to take the bolt nut off, so a faster solution would be some sort of quick disconnect, since I only need this ball once in a while. 189390

The product is great. Good quality, and Etrailer was the only place I could find a 2″ ball with a 5/8″ shank. But what really impressed me was the service from this company. The ball was back-ordered, and I received an email shortly after I placed the order informing me. I thought, “Ok, I’m glad they let me know.” But then a few minutes later, I received a personal phone call to let me know it was back-ordered and when they expected it to be in. That really impressed me. Kudos to Etrailer for the personal touch. 189365

I could not find the 2″ ball hitch with 5/8″ diameter shaft any where else. etrailer.com had the hitch ball that works with my wheel horse riding mower. Easy purchase on line at midnight. Shipping process started 6am the same morning. Excellent service! Great product. 451159

Ordered a hard to find trailer hitch and ball for my riding mower, seems like everywhere I looked ,locally didn’t didn’t have it. My ordered was shipped fast, was notified throughout the shipping process and the part was excellent and installed without a hitch (no pun intended!). Will continue to order through Etrailer when needed without any hesitation or concerns. Thanks so much for being hassle free and thorough. 272877

I needed a ball for my lawn tractor so that I could use it to move my boat trailer without having to drive my truck through the lawn. The tractor had a 5/8 hole to mount the hitch ball on and etrailer was the only place I could find that had a 2″ ball on a 5/8″ shank. The price was right and the delivery time was quicker than I expected. 232226

The 2″ Hitch Ball. 5/8″ Diameter x 1-5/8″ Long Shank. Steel # CB-20Z or similar can be mounted to your Cub Cadet Lawn Tractor. The shank of the ball is 5/8 inch diameter. If your lawn mower has a place for a ball, measure the hole and see what the diameter of the ball hole is. Travel trailers in the weight range of your 4300-lb Keystone Springdale will typically have a 2-inch ball coupler, but since there are many models in this series with widely varying weights your best bet is simply to look at the coupler housing. The coupler’s weight rating and compatible hitch ball size will be stamped into the housing. There are three common hitch ball sizes in use in the RV world: 1-7/8-inch, 2-inch and 2-5/16-inch. As you would expect the larger balls have higher weight. view full answer.

I would need to know the hole diameter in the bumper of your 1998 Ford Explorer. If it is smaller than the 1 inch shank on ball # 63845, the next size down would be a shank with a 3/4 inch diameter, # TR63822, rated for 3,500 pounds. Down from 3/4 inch we have a 5/8 inch diameter shank, # CB-20Z, which you normally see on lawn mowers and other small equipment so it is highly unlikely it will fit. The best way to measure the opening on the bumper would be to use a sett of dial calipers. view full answer.

How to Put a Ball Hitch on a Lawn Mower

When you have a riding mower, it’s not only an efficient and enjoyable way to cut the grass; it can be converted into a useful towing vehicle when necessary. Most riding mowers, like trucks and tractors, come ready to have a ball hitch attached.

It’s usually a simple process, but details will vary according to the kind of mower you own and the brand of ball hitch you use.

Will Towing Wear Down My Lawnmower Engine?

Using your riding mower as a trailer will put hours on the machine, although how often you use it in that way will determine whether or not it’s a damaging amount. Light use of a few times a year won’t put as much wear on the mower as it would for someone who regularly uses it as a trailer.

The amount of weight you’re carrying will also contribute to the amount of wear that might be put on the mower’s engine. Be sure not to overload or overexert the mower. For models that are designed to act as trailers from time to time, the manual should say the mower’s tow weight limit.

The towing capacity of a lawnmower is usually between 300 and 500 pounds, and you should subtract 50 to 100 pounds from the limit for leeway, to be sure. Remember, the heavier the load, the more exertion the engine has to put out.

Selecting the Right Hitch

Ball hitches come in various sizes. For riding mowers, you’ll probably need a smaller size, but consulting your mower’s manual should help you identify the correct size hitch that will fit the particular model.

If you can’t find that information in the manual, you can review the measurements of different sizes of hitches and compare them to the measurements of your mower’s attachment design.

Getting Ready to Attach Your Ball Hitch

It shouldn’t take too much time to attach the hitch to your mower when you have chosen the right match for your size and model. Check the riding mower hitch kit to see what the manufacturer includes – it may or may not include the flat washer and lug nut needed to secure the ball’s post in place. The ball itself may also be sold separately from the hitch plate or mount.

Make sure you have all of the required tools and materials before you start. This includes:

Installing the ball hitch usually doesn’t take much effort, and the directions on the ball hitch that you purchase should also have a list of requirements and directions for the brand’s specific model.

After gathering all the tools and materials necessary, make sure that your mower is turned off. Disconnecting the battery cable from the engine is Smart since you want it to remain off while working on it.

Installing The Ball Mount

Attaching a ball hitch to your mower starts with putting the hitch body onto the mower’s mount on the back of the machine. Most newer mowers come ready for this attachment, but if you have a model without one and you’re good with a drill and torch, you may be able to adapt your mower to receive a ball hitch.

Always do your research to be sure a home-performed modification won’t damage the mower’s body or interfere with its power system. A mower not made for towing may or may not be able to handle the weight of an attached load. If you’re drilling and/or welding, be sure to wear gloves and eye protection.

Once the hitch body is attached, it’s as simple as putting the ball post into the ball mount and fastening it. The ball post is the pivot that allows a secure connection of the trailer or other equipment and allows for smooth turns.

How Tight Should a Hitch Ball Be?

Tightening the screw on a ball hitch’s post is vital to keeping the connection in place. Bouncing around is sure to happen during use, so a strong, tight fit is important. Since your mower won’t be connected to a trailer regularly, you’ll have to make sure you give it a firm tightening each time you set it up.

You should still check the tightness of the screw and washer now and then throughout the day of use, based on the length of your project and the amount of towing involved.

Detaching a Ball Hitch

When you’re finished using the mower attachment, rinse it off and dry it to be sure no buildup is left for your next use. Keep the materials and manuals together for reference next time; you never know when you may have to replace a piece mid-use.

Why Attach a Ball Hitch to a Lawnmower?

There are several reasons you might need to use your mower as a tractor in your front or back yard. Seasonal maintenance sometimes requires heavy lifting and transporting, as can one-time projects.

Spring is a time when lots of yard projects are done, like planting grass, vegetables, and flowers. Summer has its own maintenance requirements, like cutting the grass and trimming trees.

Fall is the best time to plant trees, but it’s also a time when dying plants and hibernating trees create lots of yard debris. In any case, transporting tools, materials, soil, and plants may require a trailer or another piece of equipment.

For one-off and annual projects, like installing a path, replenishing gravel or mulch, or replanting a lawn, being able to attach a tiller or grader to your riding mower can be a convenient alternative to renting a tractor or trying to use your own vehicle.
