STIHL.105″ Premium Trimmer Line

I went to the Deere Dealer today to buy some anti-freeze and I almost walked out without it. :tongue: So many things to look at.

I was looking at new trimmer heads and items for my FS90 line trimmer and I remembered I needed more line. So I was looking at the choices and I seem the larger premum line. It looks and feels significantly stronger than the normal line. I fear it will cut through tree bark.

Anyone else using it? It was the same cost as the normal stuff, you just got 15 less feet (235 feet for 13.00).

Also note my John Deere bag was made in the USA!

The dealer told me they only make one head for the larger trimmers so it will fit.

They had the X stuff there also, but it was not as stiff or seem as durable as the premium. I did not see a commercial grade?

The new.095 stuff is twisted and looks to be pretty stout stuff. They did not have replacement of that on the shelf yet or I probably would have tried it.

I heard the X line is the way to go. I have had several string trimmers over the years and I always end up taking the string heads off and trying every blade contraption known to man. My problem is the line always melts to itself and then the string trimmer becomes a manual feed string trimmer and I feel like smashing the entire trimmer off a stone wall. :laugh: What trimmer line will prevent my frustration? My current trimmer is a STIHL, with the string nicely melted in the head.

STIHL line. It is a few years old because every now and then I’ll put new line on the trimmer head and run it for a few minutes until it melts just to remind me of why I hate using it. Then I have to take the head off before I smash the thing. It does make me laugh when I think about it because it is so simple, yet for some reason I cannot grasp some portion of the rewinding or method of use. It is my nemesis. Since I was a young kid I could never get a string trimmer to work. That, and old Briggs engines. They hate me. :laugh:

Along these same lines(pun intended) of thought. I was watching a YouTube video the other day, and it was a cemetary grounds keeper giving tips. (I know. I was in the WTF zone of YouTube aka no mans land) He said that leaving the string in water until your ready to use it,will more than double the life of the line. It evidently dries out and become more brittle. and it wont melt together after soaking. BTW, he uses a STIHL 4 mix with STIHL line and has 23 acres full of headstones he trims around. alot of practice for alot of years. I’m going to try it.

That does it. I’ll purchase a new spool of STIHL string, soak it in some water, and give it a try. I will certainly post back my results. It may be a bit though because if it works I’m going to have a few cold ones and won’t be thinking about typing. 😆

Within the last couple weeks I bought a new Ryobi Gas Trimmer. It came with the.095 twisted line. I was surprised to see it mar up the PT 4×4 posts on our deck and the cedar posts on the kids play set! Its a bit more aggressive than the.080 x line that was on my old trimmer, I guess, as I never had an issue with that. The new trimmer does a great job, so I will just be careful next time. :good2:

Not to hi-jack, but does anyone use the pre-cut pieces of line, my trimmer came with 2 heads, 1 to spool, and 1 for the pre cut. I have never used the pre-cut and was just wondering. thanks

So I had a few and put the line on the trimmer tonight. I skipped the water. I was able to put 12 feet of line on each spool without crowding the line at all. I think the thicker line makes more of a wind noise, but it could just be me. The is no fitment issues. When removing my other line I noticed I had the twisted line on it previously. So, I have 200 feet of this left. I am willing to ship out some to a few people to try if they will post opinions. No charge.

I used it in a small area and cut some serious weed and the line did not even look used. Granted it was not much, but it was thick stuff.

I’ll take you through some key decisions to make as far as finding the right shape, material, durability, weld resistance, and line size. This last factor is crucial, and you should always take a look at your trimmer’s manual or check out the manufacturer’s website to find out what string sizes will fit your machine.

Trimmer string comes in round, multi-sided, and twisted shapes. The performance is affected by the shape in many ways.

The cleanness of the cut, the durability of the string, and the noise level are all affected by the shape of the string. Different shapes are suited for different jobs so it’s important to find a shape that will match the job you use it for.

Let’s start with a round string. It comes in all sizes and is durable, economical, and easy to reload. If you’re using your trimmer on grassy lawns with minimal weeds, then a round string is the best choice.

Since it tears through weeds rather than cuts cleanly, a round-shaped string is not recommended for particularly weedy areas. A round string is also more likely to overheat and weld together when trimming along fences and concrete walls.

Twisted string is more suitable for thick weeds, as it has a cleaner cut and is more durable around hard surfaces. It’s also quieter and less likely to vibrate than other string shapes due to its reduced air resistance. For the quietest experience, use a twisted string in an electric or cordless trimmer.

Basic trimmer string is made of hardened monofilament nylon, and this has been the industry standard for years. However, manufacturers are developing these products and making constant improvements to increase their capability and durability. So while plain nylon line is still effective, there are stronger materials out there.

For example, reinforced composite nylon is more resistant to breakage. Meanwhile, some products include materials like aluminum that are impregnated into the nylon to make it stronger.

Some trimmer strings are made from non-nylon polymers or copolymers as they are more durable, while some are made with hardened core material to reduce breakage.

But while all these options improve the durability of light gauge nylon string, if you’re mainly using your trimmer for light grass trimming, then a simple nylon line will do the job.

Durability

The test for durability comes with consistent use among heavy weeds and hard surfaces. A more durable string lets you do more work per spool, and the durability of the string varies on what material it’s made of, the shape of the string, what’s being trimmed, and friction with surfaces like stone or concrete. But the thicker the string is, the more durable it will be.

Round string tends to be the most durable. This is because it contains more material with less surface area and has a longer wear time. Round string that is made of reinforced nylon or non-nylon polymer, or a string with hardened core material, will be more durable than basic nylon.

Welding resistance

Welding occurs when the trimmer string gets too hot and sticks together on the spool. This happens when the trimmer is being operated at high speed while cutting along a resistant surface, such as a fence or a concrete sidewalk, for an extended period of time.

The added friction causes heat to build up, which softens the string and eventually causes it to stick together. To solve this problem, you will have to remove the spool and restring it.

Materials used to make trimmer strings are usually weld resistant, but some types of strings are more resistant than others. A shaped line is more weld-resistant than round because of the larger surface area. Round string has a smaller surface area which makes it overheat at a quicker rate.

Line Size

Another good indicator of durability is line diameter. Thicker lines last longer but also cost more. When deciding on the right line thickness for you, make sure to take cost, how often you want to reload, and your yard conditions into account. The Role of the String Trimmer Head

Generally speaking, a string trimmer uses a monofilament line to cut through grass, weeds…whatever. By spinning that line at a high speed, the cutting head generates enough centrifugal force to hold the line out at a stiff, horizontal angle. This lets it cut through most grasses quite easily.

The height and arc of the string trimmer are manually adjusted by the operator, making the trimmer quite useful for cutting around trees, walls, rock beds, etc. In addition, you can turn a string trimmer vertically to use it as an edger against sidewalks and driveways.

On many gas models, both the cutting heads and lines can be switched out. This lets them accommodate a variety of line gauges. Not so much with battery-powered models.

Check the user manual (or with your dealer) to see what gauges your cutting head can handle. Thinner spooled line, thicker pre-cut line, serrated and square lines—even blades or chains could be used if you have a strong enough system. String Trimmer Line Size Means Thickness

This probably comes as no surprise to anyone, but the general rule with string trimmer line size is that the tougher the application, the thicker the line needs to be. A larger diameter line increases the power and durability of the line, which leads to less breakage and wear-out.

Thicker line, however, requires more power to drive it at the same speed.

String trimmer line comes in a range of thicknesses or sizes. For light work, such as trimming grass, 0.065″-0.085″ should be sufficient. For thicker grass and weeds, a line in the 0.085″-0.110″ range will get the job done, and for thicker underbrush, anything thicker than 0.110″ will work.

One note for the cordless string trimmer users: thicker strings will have an effect on your power and runtime. As the thickness of the line jumps up, more wind resistance affects the cutting head, slowing down the speed at which the engine can rotate the cutting head. Higher voltage and beefier cordless trimmers (see: the EGO Power Head String Trimmer) will probably be able to manage thicker gauge string trimmer line more efficiently, but lower voltage models might struggle with a thicker line. Generally, it’s best to refer to the manufacturer’s recommendation for string size.

The shape of the line also affects the cutting efficiency. String trimmer line comes in a variety of shapes: round, twisted, square, star shaped, and serrated. Rounded line is the most common type available, but it because it lacks a cutting edge, it rips the grass rather than cutting it. Twisted line is a bit better, as the shape has a little more of a cutting edge to it.

Some line comes in a square or star shape. The edges of these string trimmer lines are sharper than rounded trimmer line, and cut through the grass rather than tear at it. Serrated line is also an option when it comes to a sharper trimmer line. It has teeth, similar to a kitchen knife, and “saws” through heavier grass and weeds with relative ease.

When you need to jump over to heavier duty trimming work, that ensures you won’t have to mess around with changing your line to handle it.
