Adjusting the carburetor of the Husqvarna 142 chainsaw with your own hands

You can go on and on about the reasons why you might need to adjust this assembly.

Among the main malfunctions are the following:

  • Increased revolutions at idle;
  • The appearance of a large amount of smoke during operation;
  • Deterioration of starting properties;
  • Insufficient power of tool when cutting.

This is not a complete list of all known faults. Sometimes such a procedure as adjusting the carburetor on a Husqvarna chainsaw is necessary after a complete overhaul of the power unit or after maintenance.

The developers of the Husqvarna 137 write in the datasheet that carburetor adjustments should always be made before and after running-in of the tool.

Adjusting the carburetor chain saw Husqvarna 142 with their own hands

Tuning the carburetor of the Husqvarna 142 makes it possible to get rid of a number of problems.

  • Slow acceleration of the engine;
  • Inability to achieve maximum torque;
  • frequent shutdown of the engine;
  • occurrence of loud knocks when the tool is working;
  • increasing the amount of fuel consumed.

If the carburetor is not adjusted in time, it will lead to more serious damage, which will affect the engine and the ignition system.

As the instruction manual indicates, adjustment of the carburetor of the Husqvarna 142 must be performed in the following order:

  • First you need to start the saw and let its engine warm up;
  • Next, turn the L screw until the engine reaches its highest idle speed;
  • Once the maximum revolutions are reached, the L screw needs to be turned 1/4 turn in the opposite direction. If the saw chain starts to rotate during this interval, turn screw T in counterclockwise direction until the chain stops:
  • The H screw should be adjusted for a 10 second interval when the motor is at maximum speed. While doing so, the screw should gradually be turned 1/4 turn in the direction of the clock hand. If the saw motor does not reach maximum speed during this process, the screw must be turned again by 1/4 turn. If the speed is too low you will hear a loud squealing noise from the tool and if it is too high the exhaust fumes will increase;
  • To adjust screw T, turn it in the direction of the clock hand until the chain starts to turn. Immediately after, turn the screw in the opposite direction until the chain stops.

The tools needed to do the job

Before you start tuning the Husqvarna carburetor, you must take care to have all the tools that can be useful. To do this type of work yourself, you will need:

  • screwdriver for adjusting the screws (H) and (L), available from specialized stores;
  • An electronic tachometer to determine the speed reading of the crankshaft (with some experience, it is possible to make an adjustment by ear);
  • Phillips screwdriver, to adjust the screw (T);
  • a compressor with a blowing gun, for cleaning the saw before work.

An ordinary slotted screwdriver for adjustment will not do, t. к. adjustment screws on Husqvarna chain saws can have different cross sections. You have to buy a special one, this is a peculiarity of Husqvarna chain saw repair, they have made everything that the saw can be repaired only in a specialized service center Husqvarna.

Pros and Cons of Chinese Carburetors

Chinese carburetors can be low, medium and high quality. Low-quality products have the advantage of an extremely low price. The best option in terms of price-quality ratio is usually in the medium price segment.

The original STIHL carburetor European assembly or purely Japanese Walbro are excellent quality. But their price is sometimes equal to the price of the whole Chinese chainsaw. So it is better to confidently navigate in a variety of Chinese carburetors, which flooded our market, and make an appropriate choice.

Husqvarna 137 Chainsaw Carburetor Adjustment

Welcome all lovers of “interesting and appropriate man’s toys “.

Proper carburetor adjustment provides reliable carburettor performance in all conditions and economical fuel consumption. In general, if you remove the word “chainsaws”, it applies to all internal combustion engines.

Now let’s talk about how to adjust the carburetor on the chainsaw. In general, this procedure is performed from time to time. Factory setting is the best and highest quality option. But, as needed, it is made by adjusting special screws. Let’s figure out how to tune it with our own hands:

The working principle of the saw carburetor (generalized):

This machine prepares the air-gasoline mixture in a certain ratio. If this balance is not observed, then in the work of the ICE (gasoline engine) malfunctions. mixture that does not correspond to the norm can be either oversaturated (when the amount of fuel relative to the air increases) or depleted (when there is more air than is due, and less fuel).

  • The air flow moves through a special channel and the damper regulates its speed;
  • The flap opening adjusts the amount of fuel and air supply;
  • Gasoline and air, flying through the diffuser, mix and atomize;
  • The resulting mixture flows through the intake manifold into the combustion chamber (cylinder).

Signs and Causes of Poor Unstable Performance

Signs of chain saw carburetor malfunctions:

  • The engine starts badly and quickly stops. Probable cause: a lean mixture.
  • Excessive (more than normal) fuel consumption. Excessive (over normal) exhaust emission. Probable cause: Over-saturated mixture.
  • Engine does not want to run at all. There are two conditions: no gasoline (clogged fuel nozzle) or no spark (faulty spark plug, high voltage wire breakage or failure of the electrical unit).

Malfunction in itself options is rare and the background, usually subsequent:

  • Breaking of the regulating screws fastening from the defective (damaged) covering of the protective cover. Probable cause: a rough touch, an attempt of rough adjustment or strong external vibrations.
  • Piston rod wear. Here, of course, the adjustment of the carburetor, is not much help. Think about repairing the engine or replacing the saw.
  • Dirty carburetor. Probable causes: broken or inadequate air filter, poor-quality fuel, scale, tiny chips in fuel passages, etc. д. In such cases the whole fuel system should be flushed first and then the fuel system should be regulated.

Adjusting the carburetor with your hands

“Intelligently” it is recommended that it be carried out using a tachometer (and the ability to work with it), or if experience allows. by ear (t.е. to determine the rpm limit by the sound).

In other cases it is unlikely to guarantee a positive result. The chainsaw carburetor is adjusted with one, two or three screws. It depends on the make of the saw.

Let’s look at an adjustment option on a popular Husqvarna chainsaw. There are three adjustment screws labeled on this carburetor:

Adjusting the carburetor. Husqvarna 137-142 Anti-Reg!

Stop feeding the Chinese and cheapskates. Dismantle and clean the carburetor, change the dried out diaphragms, twist and turn the carburetor.

In the first case, there is one “visible” idle screw (T) and two others (L and H), usually hidden behind the shroud. There is a reason for this. The manufacturer “allows” the consumer to make adjustments only with the idle speed screw, because otherwise the factory settings are optimal. However, for some extreme conditions it is still possible to correct.

The idle speed adjustment screw may be marked with different letters from manufacturer to manufacturer. For example, Husqvarna (Husqvarna) and Partner use the Latin letter “T”, and another well-known manufacturer STIHL (STIHL), uses the letters “LA”.

Here, a clear picture of Husqvarna 137 chain saw carburetor:

adjusting, carburetor, husqvarna, chainsaw, your, hands

Hidden bottom screws (L and H) are used for adjustment of the carburetor operation when other petrol than recommended by the manufacturer is used.

If the octane number is lower. in order to increase the octane number turn the screw from right to left (unscrew it). This way you can increase power and rpm.

If the octane number is high. then to lower it, turn the screw in the opposite direction (twist). This will reduce the engine RPM.

The screws are adjusted in this order: L. H. T.

Follow the instructions for your particular chainsaw! It specifies exact angles of screw rotation. It is an obligatory requirement in order to maintain the best performance parameters of an internal combustion engine.

How to make proper adjustments? There is no universal method. This procedure is different for everyone. But the adjustment process for any chainsaw can be divided into two steps.

A key (screwdriver) to adjust the carburetor screws

Many manufacturers use brand-name wrenches. Use them, do not lose. It is not easy to find such special tools on sale. For example, such as the one in the photo on the right.

Always follow safety rules in your chainsaw manual.

The candles are

Use original ones and change them in time. At least once a year. Although, if you look more broadly, it all depends on the amount of work performed. Some work almost every day, and some work once a summer season.

Condition of air filter

Always check its condition, because it is under a great strain during intensive work. The finest wood dust is everywhere. At the end of the work cycle, it is recommended that it be removed and cleaned (washed).

If it’s a polymer (nylon) mesh, use a neutral soapy (not foamy) solution. Rinse under running water and dry in the open air (only at “plus” temperature).

If the “air cleaner” is foam rubber, it is realistic to wash it with kerosene, squeeze it very well and dry it (though the kerosene will not evaporate completely). There are filters made of material similar to velvet mesh. Such a filter should be rinsed in ordinary warm water, without the use of detergents. Then dry it.

The new absorber (also called filter) must be the same as the used one.

Fuel mix

You should use oil. recommended by the manufacturer and in the required proportions. Otherwise, there is a risk to lose the warranty prematurely. As a last resort, consider the degree of engine boost (t.е. power to engine displacement ratio, and indirectly the maximum rpm). Remember that too little or too much oil in the mixture leads to early engine wear.

In conclusion, I will say the following: if the adjustment of the carburetor of a chainsaw is done correctly, then:

  • When operating at idle, the chain must be stationary (with the brake released);
  • I can’t stop, I can’t stop, I can’t go back, I can’t go forward, I can’t go back, I can’t go forward If the chain is well sharpened, any log is no problem for the chainsaw;
  • The sound of the engine running is steady, with no howling or spontaneous acceleration. I want to create like on the photo.

I’m in the mood for a joke: Suddenly out of my mom’s bedroom, All covered in blood, with one foot on the floor,

Mom’s hacky sack runs out. And the father with the chainsaw.

That’s all. I’d be glad if the information was helpful. Stay tuned for more updates on the blog, it gets better!

Good luck in all affairs and trouble-free operation of your chainsaw, the more so that the season is not far off! Bye!
