Blind For Doghouse

With the onset of winter, many owners of dogs living in the courtyard of a private house, come to the conclusion that it is necessary to additionally warm the home of their pet. Of course, the booth should initially be made according to all the rules of the "booth" architecture, that is, the construction itself is already made of high-quality and warm: the walls have a heat-insulating layer, the outer upholstery eliminates the presence of cracks and so on. The most logical action in this case is to install a curtain that would close the hole in the booth. The shutter, in the presence of which in the warm season there is absolutely no need, in the winter it turns out to be most welcome. So I had the need to manufacture this seemingly simple product.

Probably, there are few experts in the manufacture of blinds for the doghouse. Here I am, not being such, I decided to study the issue on the example of the experience of people who have succeeded in this business more than me and have posted information about their products on the Internet. As a result of searches and acquaintance with information on the topic, I realized that the majority of users consider the curtain as a product as very simple and do not require special attention and description. Actually, a piece of some unnecessary in the household fabric, which is nailed to the top of the manhole and cut along the vertical – this is a typical design sample. However, in practice, everything was not so simple.

At first I decided not to invent anything particularly unique and, having found a suitable piece of a flannelette blanket, I made of it a curtain of the simplest design.

What was this product, I will describe below, first I will give the initial data, which determined the design and the size of the curtain – these are the parameters of the manhole of the booth.

The manhole is a rectangular hole 400 (width) X 450 (height) mm in the front wall of the booth. The manhole is shifted to the left side of the front wall and is located at a distance of 65 mm from the outer edge of the left wall of the booth and 540 mm from the outer edge of the right wall of the booth. Laz has a threshold, so the lower edge of the manhole is located at a height of 115 mm from the lower edge of the front side of the booth. Along the perimeter of the manhole there is a casing made of the rail 20 (thickness) X 28 (width) mm. Now directly description of the design of the curtain.

A piece of a flannelette blanket of 530x1240mm in size and about 1.5 mm thick is folded twice in length. The result was a two-layer billet 530 wide and 620 mm long. The length of the workpiece in the center of the blade is cut with a length of 520 mm – the entrance. The cut is made in the direction of bending the fabric of the workpiece and does not reach the bend, respectively, by 100 mm. The upper part of the blank (above the cut, in the place of bending of the fabric) is clamped between two wooden slats 60 wide and 530 mm long. Rack thickness 12 mm. The shutter is fastened with 2 self-screws over the upper rail of the manhole cover using two wooden pads with a thickness of 12 mm to prevent the curtain fabric from bending when the upper rail of the manhole is touched. Easier – under the design in the place of attachment, you need to put two linings so that the fabric of the curtain hangs down without touching the manhole cover. This is if you have a cash out. In the absence of such, it is clear that nothing needs to be laid, moreover, the bottom rail of the structure adjacent directly to the wall of the booth should be as thin as possible to eliminate the appearance of a gap between the curtain and the wall of the booth. It may even make sense to exclude this rail from the construction in general, but then the installation of the curtain will become more complicated and the curtain itself will lose its mobility and completeness of the construction. The height of the curtain is set so that its lower edge is 50 mm below the upper edge of the manhole threshold.

I draw your attention to the fact that the material for the manufacture of the curtain should be a flannelette blanket or a fabric similar in parameters: on the one hand, the material is rather thick with satisfactory heat-insulating properties, on the other hand soft. In this case, you can get the minimum gaps on the perimeter of the curtain, even if the dog you have on the chain. By the way, when using insufficiently soft fabric and the absence of special measures to neutralize the action of the chain, this chain greatly complicates the operation of the shutter, clinging to it and partially drawing it inside the booth, thus creating incompatible with satisfactory thermal insulation gaps.

Making the above curtain took quite a bit of time. Perhaps this is the main significant advantage of this design.

The product was installed and worked well for a while. The only thing I did not immediately like was the presence of a gap between the shutters of the curtain. However, immediately after the installation, the gap was very small and compared to the obvious overall improvement in the insulation of the booth – a hole much larger than a small gap – could be considered an insignificant trifle. However, over time, this gap gradually increased. After some time, its size has already questioned the effectiveness of this design. In addition, a flannelette blanket, even folded in half, does not inspire much confidence as a thermal insulation material. There is a desire to replace it with something more dense and thick, especially when the frost is from 8 to 10 ° C.

Nevertheless, such a simple curtain, despite the existing drawbacks, satisfactorily performed its functions, and its design and parameters were used by me as a guideline in the manufacture of a curtain of a more advanced design. The blind was dismantled, honestly having worked one season. Here is the fabric that was used in this curtain.

The gap between the doors in the picture is slightly less than the one formed on the real curtain during one season of operation and the shape of the hole is different, but still the photograph gives an idea of ​​the product, albeit an approximate one.

A nicer curtain will be described below. But is it worth it to "bother" with its manufacture – decide for yourself. The simplest curtain about which I spoke is already a good solution to the problem. Yes, there are small gaps around the perimeter, the wind blows the sides, and there is a gap in the center, but in general the device works satisfactorily. Qualitative curtain for the doghouse

To begin with, let us define what a quality curtain should differ from the previously described simple design, which, despite the shortcomings, is a completely decent basic model, on the basis of which we will create our new product.

First of all, it is necessary to eliminate the static gap between the doors in the center of the manhole of the booth and minimize the possibility of the appearance and subsequent increase of this gap.

Why this gap may increase during operation? The dog constantly pushes the fabric to the sides, the fabric is jammed, stretched and remains deformed. If the dog is sufficiently powerful and wide, like mine, for example, and the coat is periodically wet from rain or snow, which is inevitable – the process of deformation of the curtain goes pretty quickly. As a result, instead of an inconspicuous gap, we obtain a hole of significant size – in my case something about 120 mm in the widest part – resembling an inverted letter U in shape.

How to deal with it. First of all, the curtain should not be made from a single piece of fabric, cut in the middle, but from two independent pieces, connected into a single structure with overlapping, overlap. In my curtain overlap is 50 mm. Enough, but you can do a little more. At the same time, the fabric must be sufficiently rigid, that is, as weak as possible to resist deformation.

It has a very positive effect on reducing the gap in the center and, in general, the curtain weighting of the lower parts of the valves. But more about that later.

What does static gap mean? This is a gap when closing the curtain manually, when the flaps hang loosely down without catching on the threshold of the manhole or the chain with which the dog is tied. With a chain, of course.

It is much more difficult to deal with gaps that arise directly during normal operation of the curtain. When testing experimental samples of curtains made of various materials, it was found that it is often quite difficult to achieve accurate, high-quality manhole closure. The dog will not fix the jammed sash. Yes, and it fits into the booth at different angles, from different directions and at different speeds. Again, the chain is pulled in different ways and pulled into the booth. All this leads to the fact that the quality of closing the curtain, that is, maintaining with each closing relatively identical and minimal gaps, depends strongly on how the dog enters the booth at one time or another.

This problem is solved in several ways, the first and simplest of which is the use of soft fabric for the manufacture of curtains, as in our basic model. At the same time, even if one or two doors are drawn into the box with a chain or a dog, the gaps will be quite tolerable. In addition, the soft sash can not get stuck, clinging to the threshold of the booth, which easily happens with long (below the threshold) hard curtains and leads to the formation of a huge gap in the area of ​​the manhole. However, soft fabric is in most cases not the best heat insulation and protection from the wind. Of course, the available materials are meant – it is quite possible that you can find a soft fabric with all the necessary properties among high-tech modern products, but this is not our case.

The second method, which, in combination with the weighting of the lower edge of the sashes, makes it possible to achieve accurate closing of the curtain with minimal dependence on the dog’s actions and the presence of a chain – to set it in height so that between the lower edge of the curtain and the upper edge of the threshold of the booth there is a gap of 15-20 mm The shutter closes normally, but the presence of a gap of considerable size calls into question the expediency of applying such a method. High-quality manhole closure with this device does not work the curtains – the gap can not be called minimal. Nevertheless, such constructions, however, without weighting the curtains, I met in practice. Even with gaps far in excess of 15-20 mm. I would describe this option as "better than nothing."

And finally, the third method. Separate shutters are made of dense fabric. The shutter is suspended as proposed for the second method, namely, 15-20 mm above the threshold of the booth. Four are sewn to the lower parts of the flaps – two for each flap, and from the front and back of the flaps – flaps of soft fabric. These valves close the gap between the threshold and the shutter.

This variant of the curtain design showed, during operation, a good quality of manhole closure with minimal dependence on the dog’s actions and the presence of a chain and was adopted as the main one for manufacturing high-quality curtains.

The next stage of finalization of the basic design will be the improvement of the thermal insulation and windproof properties of the product. In practice, I improved the improvement of these properties by replacing the material of the curtain and applying measures to eliminate the side gaps.

With regard to the material, the following was undertaken: instead of two layers of a flannelette blanket, he applied four layers of wool. The result fully met expectations – the design turned out to be solid, inspiring confidence.

Lateral clearances take place in the case when the curtain is attached only above the entrance to the booth, as is done in most cases in practice. In principle, in calm weather, these gaps may be absent or insignificant, but in the presence of wind, blowing into the booth is inevitable. With a strong wind due to significant fluctuations of the curtain, the entrance to the booth can periodically open almost completely. Improves the situation, but does not eliminate the problem of weighting the lower parts of the valves. The way to save the dog from blowing into the side slits is very simple. The blind is made with some margin in width and is nailed to the side of the booth through the wooden rail with small nails on the sides.

And the last stage of refinement. A noticeable improvement in the quality of the product can be achieved by applying the weighting of the lower edges of the valves. The weights support the sashes in the tensioned state, which contributes to a significant reduction of their deformation during operation and prevents the appearance of a gap between the valves. The accuracy of closing the manhole increases due to an increase in the speed of closing and, as a result, the inclination of the sash to cling to an obstacle, for example, a chain and “hang” on it, decreases, leaving the manhole part open. In fact, weighting leads to a noticeable decrease in the dependence of the work of the curtain on how exactly the dog has entered the booth at the moment or has left it. However, with regard to the exit from the booth, weighted curtains are closed in this case almost always equally well.

Structurally, the weighting agent is a set of steel plates of size 28x28x2 mm, sewn into the inside of the sash along that part of its lower edge, which is opposite the manhole. A set of plates, and not one steel strip or rod, is used in order to maintain the flexibility of the sash, which has a positive effect on the quality of the work of the curtain as a whole.

So, by deeply modifying the basic curtain model, we obtained a product of the following design (dimensions are indicated for a booth, the parameters of which are described in the first part of the article).

Two doors with a size of 675 (height) X 490 (width) mm are made of a wool blanket. Sash four-layer, which provides good thermal insulation.

Each flap has in the lower part two valves from the bikes with the size 270x140x1.5 mm.

Each flap has weighting agents from the set of steel plates 28x28x2 mm in the lower part – 6 pcs. on each leaf.

The leaves have in the middle of the curtain mutual overlap in width, equal to 50 mm.

The upper edges of the flaps are arranged in one line and clamped with the help of three self-tapping screws between two wooden slats of 530x60x12 mm in size so that the center of the curtain leaf – folded with the overlap of two shutters – coincides with the centers of the slats.

This design is mounted above the manhole so that the center of the shutter coincides with the center of the manhole, and the distance between the lower edge of the part of the shutter made of wool material and the upper edge of the threshold of the booth was 15-20 mm. That is, the adjustment of the height adjustment is carried out with the flange valves raised up.

Between the lower mounting rail and the front wall of the booth there is an adjusting rail 12 mm thick to remove the curtain from touching the manhole cover.

The design is attached to the wall of the booth with two screws, the length of which I have, as I recall, 70 mm.

The outer vertical sides of the curtain and the horizontal parts of the upper edge, which are not clamped by fixing strips, are nailed to the wall of the booth with nails 20 mm long through a strip of plywood 4 thick and 20-25 mm wide.

The result is a construction similar to that shown in the photo:

Here are the product specifications:

1. good thermal insulation and protection from the wind (wind-proof curtain fabric, no gaps on the sides and on the top of the manhole);

2. closing the manhole with maintaining minimum clearances in the center and below the manhole, even when the dog is on the chain;

3. The minimum cost of the product, the availability of materials and tools.

Here is a description of some of the characteristic moments of manufacturing curtains.

The process of making blanks for shutters of a blanket of a standard size 1400×2050 mm looks like this.

The blanket is cut in half in width. Then each of the resulting parts of 1400×1025 is folded in half lengthwise. We get two parts 1025×700. Then these parts are folded in half lengthwise. We get two blanks of 512.5×700 mm in size. This is if the blanket is new and absolutely exactly corresponds to the standard sizes. In my case, the blanket is probably noticeably “village” in a rather long life, so the final blanks had a size of 675×490, which is unprincipled.

One of the long sides of each blank is the side of the bend of the fabric. These sides will be the inner sides of the flaps. One of the short sides of each blank is the folded two sections of curved fabric. These sides will be the top side of each flap. The outer vertical sides of the valves should be swept over.

Biker valve blanks should be swept around the perimeter. Valves are sewn to the sashes after weighting plates are sewn. The valve is sewn to the sash with only one horizontal seam, located at a distance of 5-7 mm from the upper edge of the valve. The distance from the lower edge of the “wool” part of the leaf to the lower edge of the flap is 75 mm.

Sliding rails have two (lower rail) and five (upper rail) mounting holes. When using self-tapping screws with a diameter of 4 mm, the diameter of all holes is 4.5-5 mm.

In the bottom rail there are only holes Nos. 1 and 5. They are used to fasten the entire structure assembly to the booth wall. It is advisable to drill these holes after the curtain is clamped between the slats with screws No. 2, 3, and 4. Screw No. 3 connects the fastening rails exactly in the center. It must pass through the center of the overlap of the valves.

This design has shown itself well in work. However, after two months of operation, there was a reason for a little refinement. Wool fabric of the flaps stretched a little vertically and the gap between the "wool" part of the curtain and the threshold noticeably decreased. If the gap disappears completely, the normal operation of the shutter will be disrupted. Therefore, for the next season I will strengthen the sash, stitching strips of thick braid from the inside.
