Product Description

Take a close look at the hinging mechanism that connects this miter saw to its base. That’s the Axial-Glide linkage, and it isn’t just for looks—when pulled, it extends with incredible smoothness to allow crosscuts up to 12” wide, without the need for the typical glide bar that would otherwise force you to pull the saw away from the wall for clearance. This compact, more space-efficient design is excellent for smaller shops and tight working quarters, saving up to 10” of working space. Slide it right up to the wall and cut to your heart’s content—you can say goodbye to those dents in the drywall. In addition, it won’t creep out of alignment or become sticky over time, as typical gliders sometimes do.

  • Axial-Glide System provides consistent precision over tool life and a compact footprint, saving up to 10” of workspace over typical gliding miter saws
  • Expanded 12” horizontal cutting capacity (nominal); 5-1/2” vertical capacity against the fence (base); 6” crown capacity against the fence (45° spring)
  • Bevel controls are located up front for quick, easy bevel settings without reaching behind the saw
  • Chop/crown lock secures head in place for maximum chop cutting capacity for upright base molding and nested crown molding
  • Tall sliding 4-1/4” fences for easy bevel setups and increased crown and base molding capacity
  • Large, easy-to-read uniform bevel stainless steel miter scales: 52° left/60° right miter capacity; 47° left/47° right bevel capacity with marked detents and roof pitch angles
  • Adjustable miter detents at 0°, 15°, 31.6°, 22.5°, 45°, 60° right super-accurate and durable design
  • Push-button miter detent override with easy-to-access thumb-actuated control for fine miter angle adjustment
  • Bevel detents at 0°, 33.9° and 45° left/right for accurate cuts
  • Category best 90% dust collection is optimized for cutting 2x material with a vacuum
  • Ambidextrous trigger with soft grip ergonomic handle provides comfort for all-day use

Bosch GCM12SD 12-Inch Miter Saw Review

This Bosch miter saw has a powerful motor that runs at 3800 RPM. The safety features are subpar with 2 safety switches that are instantly accessible from the miter saw handle. This Bosch 12 inch miter saw comes with a dual purpose handle for left and right handed users, a dust collection port and a detailed instructions manual. Model GCM12SD is ideal for DIY projects and intermediate level woodworking.

Ever since Bosch electronics entered the power tools industry, things got a little tough for the contenders. Today, I have a brand new unit of the Bosch GCM12SD Db Glide Miter Saw. Sadly, it is a loaner product that has to be returned shortly.

All I can say is that I’d be upset to part ways with this Bosch miter saw because of the overall perks, durability factor and other benefits. Bosch has definitely outdone a lot of other power tools, which sometimes lack the benefits that this mean dog is capable of delivering.

The Dilemma about Bosch GCM12SD Miter Saw Model:

Okay, before we jump to the review section, there are a couple of misconceptions about this Bosch miter saw. I have briefly explained the “what” and “why” factors underneath each subsection, but I want you to know that this is a very stable product as long as you have prior experience with miter saws.

The problem with the Bosch GCM12SD series is that some people have complained about the saw’s “subpar” average. On the contrary, my experience was different. I will say this that it might not be the correct definition of a perfect standalone miter saw, but it is still pretty nifty for a wide variety of wood working projects.

Innovation at Its Finest:

Good things come in small packages. Bosch GCM12SD series is lined up with innovative features that make the miter saw an ideal asset for workers who operate in confined spaces. Take a look at the breakdown of some of the so-called innovations which are isolated to this model only…

Bosch’ Axial Glide Mechanism

Axial Glide is a patented new feature, which is seldom seen in other miter saws these days. Some companies are still testing the waters, while other have no idea how to implement axial glide in their power tools.

This is a design related feature which makes full use of limited workspace; both onboard and off-board. Axial glide enables the users to fold back the Bosch GCM12SD miter saw with its articulated arm flush. This causes the users to save/ free up to 12 inches space, which is the equivalent of a foot. As a result, you will have more clearance in case you are planning to perform straight cuts on bigger pieces of wood.

In summation, the new glide feature works flawlessly when you are looking to get more control out of your projects. Of course, every other miter saw comes with a balanced approach, but once you have on board space conservation such as with the axial glide, or whatever fancy shmancy name it has, things can go smooth.

Flexibility:

Although Bosch GCM12SD 120 volt miter saw is compact, it offers flexibility to a very large capacity. Compared to the DeWALT DWS780 miter saw which I reviewed earlier, Bosch is flexible in a sense that I was easily able to make 6.5 inch crown cuts. This is the kind of capacity over a range of freedom that every woodworker yearns for.

Since this model is a 12 inch miter saw, bigger/ deeper cuts are not easy to make. 6.5 – 7 inches is a lot by the current standards. On a side note, Bosch also implemented square lock system in the fences. If you have been reading my miter saw reviews of other power tools, you probably know by now that square locks can come as a huge blessing to wood workers.

At the touch of the lock – unlock position, you are literally able to make the most aligned cuts ever! This removes the hassle of manual work and pretending to keep your hands still while you are also fully focused on sliding the blade back and forth.

Multi Purpose Ergonomics!

Another impressive feature is the handling and ergonomics factor. Almost all miter saws are made for right handed folks, but for a south paw like me, the market gets really saturated. Bosch GCM12SD is both left hand and right hand oriented. It’s like they heard the “calling” and manufactured something without the usual nonsense.

Bosch GCM12SD Dual Bevel Sliding Glide Miter Saw First Impressions

Let’s say, you need to make a cut at a weird angle and you are right handed, then left hand orientation can come in “handy”. Likewise, the ambidextrous handle also offers a soft grip to help move the miter saw easily from one place to another. People did complain about the weight, but hey, it’s a miter saw – and these products are not really lightweight.

Must Read If It Is Your First Time with Bosch GCM12SD Miter Saw!

Okay, this is the section for all the people who have been bad mouthing Bosch GCM12SD series for its apparent “flaws”. I will attend to them one by one. Read on…

GCM12SD Is Too Damn Heavy:

Many people have taken over at Amazon reviews section for this Bosch miter saw. Although the overall number of reviews is positive, but some people are legit complaining about the product’s weight. Cmon’ man, get real; this is a miter saw – it is supposed to be heavy.

As a matter of fact, if you compare Bosch GCM12SD with the Makita 2401 miter saw series, you will notice that Makita weighs a lot more than Bosch. Ironically, Makita users are not complaining about the heavyweight contender. The GCM12SD model, on the other hand weighs in at approx. 88 Lbs., which is not a big deal. Sometimes negative reviews are written by jealous competitors to scare potential buyers.

Bosch GCM12SD Miter Saw is Not Accurate!

Yep, another myth that says that the miter saw is inaccurate. From one wood worker to another, all I can say is that I have rarely owned an “inaccurate” cutting power tool. Yeah, there was this one incident where I bought a Craftsman Evolv saw, and it had a faulty miter gauge. The blade was also positioned at the wrong angle, which alludes to the manufacturer’s fault.

That being said, most of the miter saws require customization and setup. I normally don’t expect power tools to work right away as soon as they are unpacked. There is a bit of a “getting to know” phase, which is essential to a long lasting performance for any product out there.

Plan to spend at least an hour on adjustments, testing the fences, various cutting material and then talk about the inaccuracy factor. Bosch is cool; it just needs a bit of customization. You can also refer to the manual instead of ignoring it like a plague. You may or may not have a problem with the miter detent plate; it depends on the type of GCM12SD unit you received in the order.

Bosch Miter Saws Are Generally Noisy:

Nope, this is another absolutely wrong notion. Since it is a belt driven miter saw, there is no gear clash. The friction is low and you are not able to hear a lot of noise, so much as a whirring sound in fact.

For safety purpose, always wear protective head gear. Some helmets come with extended ear plugs to help reduce external noise. I don’t use ear plugs, but sometimes when a chainsaw or a table saw calls for it, there’s no harm in donning a pair. Miter saws are no exception.

Bosch 10-Inch Dual-Bevel Glide Miter Saw CM10GD Review

Deep Cuts are Not Possible:

Earlier in this Bosch GCM12SD 12 Volt miter saw review, I stated that you can make cuts up to a depth of 6 ½ inches easily. Some users beg to differ as they believe that anything above 4 ½ inches is a myth. If you believe so then you are probably not an old schooler.

Back in my days, we used a manual Rockwell Sawbuck. For deeper cut, we made full use of the longer range of motion. Likewise, GCM12SD Bosch miter saw is no different. In fact, they have added the Axial Glide system for free range of motion. Improvise and you will get those sweet deep cuts.

The Kick Factor:

Use other company miter saws before coming to a conclusion about the kick factor on Bosch GCM12SD. I rest my case.

The Safety Mechanism is Subpar!

How dare you, good sir? Bosch created the GCM12SD model with dual purpose handling in mind. Likewise, the safety switches on the top of the soft grip handle offer easy access whether you are standing at the right side of the miter saw, or the left side of the miter saw. It depends on you. Pick a location and then stick with it!

Surface Level Issues:

Some users have complained that their Bosch miter saw is not leveled. Well, guess what, maybe your floor is not leveled? Perhaps you can use a water scale to check the table surface level, but I can guarantee that Bosch GCM12SD is as straight as a stick!

In case you don’t have a scale, then you can install an accelerometer measuring app in your smartphone. Place it on the table of the miter saw and you will know where exactly it’s leaning towards.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Papafluffnfreddy from It’s what I’ve grown to expect from Bosch This has got to be one of the “SWEETEST” pieces of equipment i have. My son and I have a wood shop and this thing has taken us to a brand new level. The accuracy and durability is just incredible. We use and have tons of tools and adding this lil beauty to our arsenal Is just the thing we needed. As a matter of fact we are so sold on this product that we are seriously thinking about getting another one. As I am writing now my son is actually making a miter saw stand to accommodate 2 of these saws. So far all is well with this saw and my son and i hope to get many many years of use out of both of them. Thanks again

Rated 3 out of 5 by Vusta from Great features, but build quality is hit or miss I really wanted to like this saw. I love the design, and the space saving it allows, but after spending hours getting it all dialed in and square, it would go back out of square after a few cuts. Also, there is a bit of flex in the axial arm when cutting, you have to keep a light touch to minimize the deflection during the cut. The table wings sat about.008 below the main table wings, not a big deal if you are rough cutting, but I’m looking for precision. I returned the saw and decided to go with the Festool Kapex. It has its own set of problems, but the cut quality is amazing and it was near perfect setup straight out of the box.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Matthew from Truly Amazing Saw is truly amazing, was dead square out of the box, slight assembly with a few pieces, then ready to go! Make sure you adjust the tension on the slide as it comes from the factory with no tension, makes it easy to push too fast and possibly splinter wood. Definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a very high quality saw.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Steve from Still going strong after 4 years! Been using one of these saws on the job for close to 4 years now 7 days a week! Abused, misused, and worked hard. Can cut up to 20 inch wide 3/4 plywood if the outside of the board is raised up on the table after the max cut laying flat! Not a recommended use for Smart people! Anyway, I digress, it still cuts straight and has been an amazing investment for our company. Had to adjust the angle of the table last week for the first time. Takes about 2 minutes to adjust with improper tools. Can’t say enough good things about this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by middlec from Wow! What a Saw! I have had this saw for about a month now and absolutely love it. Assembly was easy right out of the box. It needed some adjustments to get it square (found a great YouTube video for this), but was not overly complicated to set up. It literally is like cutting butter with this thing and the cuts are really precise. There are many complaints online concerning the dust collection, but I’ve not found it to be that bad. It is super heavy, weighing a good twenty or more pounds then the competition, but I’m using mine exclusively in the shop, so no worries there. The axle glide system is great and saves a ton of room in my work bench. I would definitely recommend this miter saw!

Rated 5 out of 5 by Paul from The best saw on the market, barr none I bought this saw when it first came out several years ago. At the time I was a forman on a very large commercial job. I used this saw to produce top quality woodwork on a number of levels. Its accuracy and easy of use coupled with its durabitity make it worth every penny!! Now I own a cabinet and furniture shop. I still depend on my Bosch to produce true cuts with very little ossilation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Craig from Work like a master carpenter even if you aren’t!! I like the fact that it does not require additional room behind it for the saw to glide. This was a birthday gift from me to my brother-in-law and he was overjoyed. I was concerned regarding any possible adjustments necessary, but not to worry. The saw was not cutting square out of the box, and we looked in the book, and it took 5 minutes to make a simple adjustment and fix the issue. This is a quality piece of equipment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Twofive from 12” Bosch compound miter saw [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is a bonafied work horse miter saw. The axial glide is smooth as silk. Miters and bevels are dead on accurate. The 60 tooth blade that comes with the saw cuts smooth. clean, and true. It’s a power tool you’ll enjoy for a long time. I mounted my saw to the Bosch T4B gravity rise portable stand. The stand is rugged, easy to set up and move. It protects the saw when transporting and in storage. This is a complete package for those who value quality.

Today’s miter saws are a significant improvement over the manual miter boxes of the 1960s. For anyone who does any type of carpentry work, a miter saw is usually a necessity to get work done on time. Mitering is the process of fitting two boards together at an angle. With trim work requiring so many of these cuts, miter saws are also sometimes called “trim saws” but are also invaluable for making other types of crosscuts as well, such as end cuts on hardwood flooring strips or angle cuts on roof rafters.

Selecting the best miter saw depends on the type of projects you are planning on doing. Keep reading to learn more about this essential woodworking tool and what we found when we performed hands-on testing with the following models.

Types of Miter Saws

All miter saws feature a circular blade encased in a swing arm that pivots from side to side to make crosscuts on narrow strips of wood (5 to 18 inches wide, depending on the saw). However, one saw doesn’t fit all types of projects, so individual woodworking needs will determine which saw is right. Depending on quality and features, miter saws can start at around 175 and run up to 1,000 or more. The following are the most common types of miter saws.

  • Standard miter saw: This simplest of all miter saws is sometimes called a “chop saw” because the swing arm pivots to the appropriate angle and then chops through the material. These simple power miter saws only make miter cuts, so they’re not as popular as some other types of saws.
  • Single bevel compound miter saw: In addition to cutting angles, the swing arm on a single bevel compound miter saw tilts in one direction (typically to the left) to cut a beveled and mitered cut. This comes in handy for tasks such as installing crown molding or certain types of roof rafters. Many miter saws on the market today are compound miter saws.
  • Dual bevel compound miter saw: A dual bevel compound miter saw also cuts bevels, but unlike a single bevel compound miter saw, the swing arm tilts in both directions. This is strictly a convenience and a time-saver—a single compound miter saw can still make the same cuts, but the user has to turn the board over to cut a bevel in the opposite direction. The dual bevel ability saves that step.
  • Compound sliding miter saw: Sliding rails on a compound miter saw allow the user to cut wider boards. Non-sliding miter saws cut boards a few inches narrower than their blade diameter, so a 10-inch miter saw will cut a board up to 6 inches wide. If cutting a wider board, the user will have to turn the board over to finish cutting through it.

A sliding compound miter saw is the best type of miter saw for cutting wide boards because the user can pull the saw’s motorhead toward themself, lower the head, activate the motor, and push it through the board. Depending on the model, a sliding miter saw can handle boards from 10 to 18 inches wide, and it can be either a single bevel compound or dual bevel compound miter saw. Some of the best compound miter saws also feature zero-clearance arms, which allow the saw to sit close to a wall without limiting the blade’s travel.

What to Consider When Choosing the Best Miter Saw

The type of woodworking projects a user intends to undertake will determine the features needed in a miter saw. Someone who only wants a miter saw to make crosscuts on wood flooring strips won’t need the extra features a professional trim carpenter needs to cut crown molding.

Size and Intended Use

Miter saws are labeled by the size of blade they accept. In general, the larger the blade, the larger the board the saw will cut. Not everyone needs the largest blade size—some prefer a tool with a smaller blade because those tools are typically lighter in weight and simpler to move (and often more accurate). A few off-sizes exist, but the most common miter saw blade sizes are 7¼, 8½, 10, and 12 inches.

  • 7¼-inch and 8½-inch miter saws: Handy for around-the-house cutting, these saws will make a 90-degree cut on a 2×4 and a 45-degree cut on a 1×2.
  • 10-inch miter saw: A 10-inch miter saw will make a 90-degree cut on a 2×6 and a 45-degree cut on a 2×4.
  • 12-inch miter saw: The largest size used by DIYers and most builders, a 12-inch miter saw will make a 90-degree cut on a 2×8 and a 45-degree cut on a 2×6.

Any of the above miter saws can cut wider boards if they’re equipped with a sliding arm. For example, a 10-inch miter saw with a 6-inch sliding arm can make a 90-degree cut on a 2×12.

Keep in mind that 10- and 12-inch blades often suffer from a bit of deflection. Deflection is when the blade’s path wobbles a bit during cutting. While not usually an issue, discerning woodworkers and high-end finish carpenters will choose a saw that minimizes deflection.

Corded vs. Cordless

Until a few years ago, all miter saws were corded, and most still are, but these cords limit where the saw can operate. Cordless miter saws are the new kids on the block, and they operate on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Battery runtime depends on the number of cuts and how thick the wood is, but expect an average of 150 to 275 cuts on a single battery charge.

Motor Power

The more power the saw’s motor has (measured in amperes), the longer the user can cut boards without the risk of overheating. Typical miter saw motor sizes are 10-amp, 12-amp, and 15-amp.

The larger motors will also generate enough blade-spinning force for cutting through thick, dense material. For example, if the user will be cutting only through pine boards, a 10-amp miter saw will likely offer more than enough power. However, a more powerful motor may be necessary for those who need to make repetitive cuts through fiber cement siding or oak stair treads.

Safety

A miter saw isn’t the most dangerous saw in the workshop, but it can still injure its user if misused or if it doesn’t come with safety features. The following safety features are standard on most of today’s miter saws.

  • Blade guard: This is a clear cover that encases the spinning miter blade. When the user lowers the blade to cut, the guard rotates out of the way. When the user lifts the blade, the guard rotates back over the blade to cover it.
  • Trigger brake: Not all miter saws have a brake, but if they do, the brake stops the blade from spinning when the user releases the trigger.
  • Lockout button: If the saw has a lockout button, the blade won’t spin when the user pulls the trigger unless the lockout button is also depressed. This double-safety measure prevents unintentional cuts.
  • Clamps: Most miter saws sold today come with a safety clamp to help hold the material in place while cutting. This keeps a board from slipping, which reduces the risk of the user grabbing it and inadvertently touching the spinning blade.
  • Dust collection: Like all power saws, miter saws create a lot of fine dust that can irritate the eyes or lungs. If the saw has a dust-collection port, a user can attach a standard shop-type vacuum hose, and the suction from the vacuum will remove most of the dust before it becomes airborne.

Additional Features

Miter saws are versatile, and some come with additional features that expand on their use. Some accessories come built into the saw, and some can usually be purchased separately if desired. Keep the following extras in mind when deciding on a miter saw.

  • Laser guide: Some miter saws have laser guides that mark a red or green line across the wood where the blade will cut. This is an excellent feature for DIYers and beginners to ensure the board is correctly positioned before cutting.
  • Depth stop: A miter saw that comes with a depth stop allows the user to set the depth of the cut—similar to a radial arm saw. This allows the user to cut a groove in the material without cutting all the way through.
  • Sliding fences: Sliding fences are built into some miter saws, and they pull out on both sides to allow the user to position the material securely along the fence.
  • Flip fences: Flip fences come with locking stops, and the user can lock two or more stops on the fence and simply flip them up and out of the way to cut a different length. Flip fences are handy when the user needs to go back and forth between two or more lengths when cutting boards.
  • Nonslip grip: Summer days can result in slippery grips on a miter saw handle. Some manufacturers now offer padded nonslip grips to reduce hand fatigue and allow for a better grasp.
  • Dust collection: Miter saws tend to kick up sawdust, particularly when operated inside a workshop. To remedy this, two types of dust collection are available for miter saws. The first is a small bag designed to collect some of the dust that blows into it naturally as it comes off the blade. The second (and better) option is a dust-collection port that connects to the hose of a shop-type vacuum.
  • Stand: Many miter saws come with holes that allow the user to bolt them to the workshop table for stability, but a few come with miter saw stands that hold the saw securely when cutting.

Our Top Picks

Not everyone will need the most powerful saw—or the advanced features of sliding compound miter saws—but based on individual mitering needs, one of these top-quality saws may be a beneficial addition to the workshop.

And, to ensure we’re only suggesting some of the very best miter saws, we performed hands-on testing with the following models.
