Chamfering router for wood

Cutter for electric hand router is a small cutting tool. Consists of three simple parts:

  • shank;
  • supporting body;
  • Cutter blades fixed in the bearing body.

A great deal depends on the quality of the mill. As experienced craftsmen say. it is not so important what kind of milling machine is used, it is important what quality of the cutter.

Nevertheless, it is better to work with a good quality, comfortable milling machine. The mill rotates at high rpm during milling, achieving clean, fast and high-quality performance. The router motor and overdrive gearbox deliver the routing cutter speeds of 10,000 to 30,000 rpm. the more rpm a milling machine is able to produce, the better.

Design of grooving cutters

Disk grooving cutters offered by our company are the basic tool for machining workpieces made of wood on milling machines. Cutting tool designed for slotting and planing workpieces of varying depths.

Our product range includes sharpened burrs with tungsten carbide tips or inserts. The slotting disc cutters shown in our catalog are used on all types of woodworking machines (universal milling, four-sided) for grooving and planing across and along the blade.

The router bits are used to create strong groove joints in wooden construction. The router bits for wood grooves presented on our web site are equipped with a housing with a seating hole and teeth that process the workpiece. Cutting edge length depends on the characteristics of the tool bit.

The main characteristic of the T-slot cutter is its width, since the tool is designed specifically for slotting. the special design feature of on-tools is that the tooth of the milling disc cuts chips, the width of which is less than the width of the slot, due to this simplifies the removal of wood waste and minimizes the probability of breakage of the tip.

T-groove cutters are made from carbide and alloy steel. The blades of the milling head are located on the disc. In order to reduce the friction of the cutting tool, the saw blade is slightly less thick at the ends than in the center. The teeth are only on the cylindrical surface.

    high reliability due to the use of quality materials for tool manufacturing;

Let’s look at popular types of wood cutters used with the drill.

Drill bit

The shaft (spindle) of the router, which rotates the cutter, produces from 10,000 rpm to 30,000 rpm.

An electric drill averages 10 times less, up to a maximum of 3,000 rpm. Screwdriver at first speed only 400 rpm, at second speed up to 1500 rpm.

Drill bits. cutters work very well at these rpm with the drill. First and foremost is the Forstner drill. It is called a drill, because this tool is designed for drilling holes. But by design it is a mill.

Forstner bit

This cutter is designed very well and efficiently. That’s why these cutters are widely used all over the world. Has three working elements:

  • center sharpened cone. Centers the cutter, keeping it from shifting sideways, which is especially important when you start drilling;
  • lateral cutting (undercutting) cutters. Cleanly cut through the circumference of the hole diameter, minimizing tearing and chipping of the workpiece around the hole;
  • Horizontal (main) cutters. Placed strictly perpendicular to the drill axis, and also flat picks out the bottom of the hole if it is not through.

This is important for drilling holes for seating round furniture elements and other joinery parts. Conventional twist drill bit with taper sharpening at bottom leaves same tapered hole. The Forstner drill bit drills a hole with a straight “bottom.

Sold individually or in sets of 5 to 10., various diameters. Generally from 8 mm to 40 mm. Available in diameters of 56 mm and more.

Groove

Normal groove cutters from manual milling machines are practically unsuitable for a drill. You can try to pick a groove with a drill and use it, but the work will be done roughly and slowly. For the above reasons. drills have low rotational speeds. Low speeds are compensated by slot cutters specially designed for drills.

The photo shows the slot cutter and the result of its work.

In essence, it is a file (rasp) on wood with a coarse tooth, but not flat, and round.

End mill, bevel mill, edge mill

Processing of edges and ends of blanks, chamfering is usually performed by a hand router. It is also possible to carry out such operations with a drill, if the right tooling is used. Example of a mill for chamfering the longitudinal edge and ends of workpieces with a drill:

Low speed of the drill is compensated by a large number of cutting edges. Whereas a handheld electric cutter has only 2, drill cutters have 8 to 12.

For hinges

Selecting fits for flat door and frame hinges with a drill is very difficult. For this purpose a manual milling machine is used. But it is easy and simple to make a selection for round hinges, even with an electric screwdriver. For this, the above Forstner drill of suitable diameter is used.

Furniture hinges with a circular planting element have standard dimensions. It is exactly what the drill bit manufacturers rely on. That’s why you can always find a Forstner drill bit with the right diameter for round furniture hinges on the market.

Here is an example of such a use

Disk

The design of these drill bits is clear from their name. It is a small disc with cutting teeth. Works on the same principle as the large circular saw blades. But it is not used for sawing because of low power and rotational speed of the drill and the size of the disc itself. May be suitable for auxiliary work in various carpentry operations. In this case, special devices for clamping and securing the drill may be required.

Tubular (drill bit)

A very common and very effective tool in drills. Can be used to cut holes of various diameters.

Even a low-power drill works with drill bits relatively easily, because the entire mass of the hole is not selected, but only the circumference is cut.

  • two shanks of different sizes to fit the bits, one with a centering drill, which is repositionable;
  • a set of bits themselves;
  • hexagonal wrench for fixing the bits on the shank.

The peculiarity of the burrs is that the circle selected from the hole is not drilled into chips, but remains intact.

There are other designs of tubular cutters. They look like regular, large-diameter spiral drills, hollow inside. On the circumference of the face are the cutting edges.

There is also a semblance of interchangeable crowns as in the photo, but instead of a monolithic bowl with teeth, a flexible circular saw is used. The tooling is weak, but well suited for soft, thin materials. Such tooling no longer refers to cutters, but to circular saws, although they perform the same tasks as core cutters.

The jig

The burr is a tool used to refine already made holes or machined surfaces. For example, a round hole is drilled, but the part to be seated is oval in shape or just slightly out of size. Cutters are used for fitting. They come in different shapes and materials, including abrasive stone. Although the abrasive can be called a mill only conditionally. Classic burr milling cutters made of metal. An example of a set of such tooling at

Cutters for wood furniture.

Type: soldered, material R6M5. Set is designed for the production of profiles and counterprofiles for furniture facades on milling machines. Shaft diameter. 32 mm (cutters can be made with 30, 35, 40 mm shaft diameter).

Scope of delivery: two cutters.

Cutting material R6M5 (Dneprosteel) hardness no less than 59 units. Run-out in the planes is no more than 0,02. Rocks to be milled. pine, oak.

Five main types can be distinguished here, some of which, in turn, are divided into subspecies. Let us have a closer look at them.

Grooving cutters: their subspecies and areas of application

Already by the name of the species, it is clear that such bits are used for slotting, with which parts will subsequently be connected or a T-shaped rubber edge will be inserted into the slot. The groove can be any width, the distance from the surface is regulated by the protrusion of the cutter’s platform.

Straight groove wood cutter

Such a bit is also called a finger bit. It has a simple straight cylinder shape and is used for cutting rectangular slots with a clean, straight base. Often used for fitting locks or hinges. In such work, a special template for the router is used, which allows not to make a mistake with the dimensions.

The straight groove cutter is the simplest of all

Grooving slot, V-shaped, profiled cutter

Simple fillet cutter makes a groove with a rounded bottom, resembling the letter “U”. Used for decorative purposes. V-shaped fillet nozzle is similar to it, but the bottom of the groove will be made not by a semicircle, and the wedge.

As for shaped cutters, these are products of various shapes, which are used not so much for grooving as for edge chamfering. Such nozzles give the bevel cut an unusual appearance. such as can be seen on the doors of kitchen sets or other furniture.

The closest in purpose is the V-shaped

Dovetail and constructional T-tail router bits

These routers create trapezoidal or inverted “T” shapes at the end of the board, with a wider edge at the bottom and a taper towards the edge (“dovetail”). Such cutters are mostly used for wood splicing. Parts connected in this way can not simply be separated from each other. Both when assembling and disassembling, it is necessary to push one element into the other along its entire length.

Wood end mills and their features

Wood end milling cutters can be profiled, tapered, and spherical. They are used for machining the end parts of the part, forming grooves with complex configuration, as well as for decorating surfaces with a variety of ornaments. Also such wood cutters are called end mills. Cone (burrs) are used to create holes of a certain shape.

Edge milling cutters and their varieties

Edge mill bits most often are equipped with a bearing on the end, which allows you to smoothly lead the milling cutter on the edge of the product, making a shaped chamfer. Let’s try to understand what kind of cutters edge species and what specific operations they can perform.

Edge sleeves of straight, rebate and tapered types

The bevel cutter is used for quartering or rectangular grooves. The bearing allows you to perform the operation on both straight and curved sections. The depth of the groove can be changed by installing a bearing of a different diameter. They can also include a disc milling machine for wood, which performs a thin selection of grooves.

Edge rebate routers are quite in demand among carpentry craftsmen:

Straight nozzles of this type are used for finishing edges, giving corners an ideal indicator of 90°. Cone edge milling cutters are designed for chamfering the product.

Finishing, shaping, half-groove and rebate edge milling cutters

Such bits allow you to perform the following operations:

  • rounding edges of details;
  • Crevice edging
  • Half-jointed protrusions;
  • Edge forming with a sponge;
  • Decorative work, for example on window frames.

Combination milling cutter: what is it

These attachments have both spike and groove tooling, which allows you to perform wood splicing operations without replacing the cutting tool.

This is what a combination nozzle and the result of its work may look like

Phygirae cutter: what operations are performed with its help

These cutting tools are designed for door paneling. Due to their design features they are used both on straight and shaped areas, however, for a simple household cutter the work with them will be an impossible task. You need a machine with at least 1500 Watt. The weaker one simply can’t handle this kind of work.

After you understand what cutters are available, you can move on to their choice.

A low-powered router can’t handle a hand router

Cutters for the hand router on wood

Hand-held router wood cutters are the most commonly used cutting tools in our range. Their diversity allows you to choose the best option for edging or facade work and ensure high-quality material cutting.

A broad range of products in this segment enables accurate selection of the right tool for each and every specific application.

Using

All cutter kits indicate what they are best suited for. Hand routers for wood are made mainly from high-speed steel. without any harder coatings or inclusions. The task when milling out wood and plastic is not to overheat the tool: it can let go, and the steel will lose its “speed” properties, turning into an ordinary. To put an overheated and “tempered” cutter back in operation, it would have to be re-hardened and re-hardened. To harden tempered cutters with tempering temperature they use cooling in industrial (machine) oil with a special heating-temperature algorithm.

High-speed steel can handle Plexiglas and aluminum.

Cutters with pobedite teeth, tips are used for artistic processing of stone (including ceramic granite), concrete and masonry. Pobedite tips made of tungsten-cobalt additives (and not iron-based, as some beginners think) are welded, fused, or brazed to a steel base.

Pobedite is also used for boring of shaped holes and processing of bronze, copper, nickel and other nonferrous metals.

Cutters with a diamond coating (or inclusions). a phenomenon inherent in drilling and processing, cutting of unhardened glass, all kinds of steel and color metal, for work on porcelain tiles. It is even possible to drill with a diamond cutter, to grind a workpiece with a pobedite. The latter is not to be abused. the diamond falls off due to overheating of the solder joint between the diamond grit and the tool steel base.

In some cases the diamond chips overheat and burn out if the milling machine exerts excessive force.
