Choosing a miter saw with a broach

Mini miter saw with 12-24V feed

choosing, miter, broach

Materials and tools used by the author:

List of materials:
– furniture guides (sliders);
– plywood;
– steel rods;
– linear bearings;
– sheet aluminum;
– spring;
– thin sheet metal for the shield;
– motor 775;
– Belting;
– axle fasteners (aluminum);
– flange for installing cutting discs;
– bolts, nuts, screws;
– button to turn on the machine;
– wires, socket and socket for connecting the power supply.

The process of making homemade products:

Step one. Broach and hinge
Cut a rectangle out of plywood and fasten the shelf guides on the sides. These guides will serve as a pulling unit, a block with an engine will drive along it.

Next, we need to make a hinge that will tilt the saw. The hinge can be made from a linear bearing, we use washers to minimize backlash. The axle itself is attached to the base using aluminum clamps.

After careful measurements, you can attach the pivot pin to the base. The easiest way to cut plywood for parts is with a jigsaw, the author built for this a small “circular saw” based on a jigsaw.

Step two. Block with motor
We cut out a rectangle from plywood, attach the axle to it on bearings, and also fasten the motor using the bracket. The author used a lowering belt drive, it allows you to lower rpm and increase torque, which is what you need for a good miter saw.

The motor must be able to move away from the driven axle so that the belt can be tensioned.

Step three. Protective shield
We make a protective shield over the disc so that nothing will fly into the face while working. Of course, the shield will also prevent you from getting hurt on the disc if you touch it with a part of your body.

We make the base for the shield from MDF or plywood and cut out a casing for it from thin sheet steel or aluminum. We fasten the shield with self-tapping screws and now our machine has become safer.

Where can be applied

  • – when laying floors
  • – in the manufacture of window frames
  • – for other joinery and construction work
  • – in the manufacture of furniture, etc. This saw will allow you to perform any work much faster and better than with a conventional mechanical miter box.

Which miter saw to choose

As beginners gain more and more experience, they begin to perform more and more complex work and, accordingly, better quality. And for this, it becomes necessary to acquire a more complex, more convenient tool in work. Today we will talk about a tool such as a miter saw.

If, for just beginning craftsmen, if necessary, washed down “mustache”, washed down at any other degree or an oblique cut, it was recommended to use a mechanical tool, namely a rotary miter box with a hacksaw. then for the more advanced and those who want to solve more complex problems, we can recommend an electric tool, the so-called “miter saw”. It is also called “pendulum”.

This tool allows you to process the required workpieces faster and more accurately. What functions can this saw perform? Here are the main ones:

  • -sawing at right, oblique, inclined
  • -selection of grooves in the workpiece, etc.

Tool selection

Now a few words about choosing a tool. Proceeding from the fact that for such saws vary significantly and even tenfold, it is necessary to determine for what purpose it is purchased.

If the saw will be used for one-time work, that is, for household use, for example, for installing skirting boards and the like, then there is no need to buy a professional expensive saw, a budget one with the required number of functions will do.

If, however, it is supposed to perform more accurate and complex work, the manufacture of furniture, other complex structures, then you should think about a more functional saw.

You should pay attention to such parameters as the width and depth of the cut. If you need to process wider workpieces, then you need to choose a saw with a feed function. This function allows you to pull the saw towards you on the guide rails, then start the saws and advance them forward. this way you can cut and trim wider workpieces.

Also, it is important to pay attention to whether there is an adjustment for the cutting depth. this will come in handy when grooving.
You should carefully look at the values of the angles of rotation in both directions for oblique cuts, angles of inclination (including smooth or discrete control). And depending on the solution of the proposed tasks, make a choice.

There are other functions as well, such as dust collector, laser showing cutting line, various adjustments, etc.

The more expensive and more powerful the saw, the more functions it has and is designed for longer continuous work. Naturally and allows for more accurate cuts.

It so happens that it will be sufficient to purchase an inexpensive saw that will allow you to perform the necessary tasks for home repair and construction.

At the same time. that a miter saw will give great opportunities in high-quality processing of various products and will facilitate the performance of certain work, we must not forget that the responsibility when using this tool will also increase. This is an observance of safety precautions when using power tools.

Cutting tool, sharp, high speed. attentiveness during work should be maximum. And be sure to follow all the manufacturer’s recommendations on the use of cutting discs, conditions of use, compliance with safety measures.

Be sure to wear glasses and gloves when working with this tool. At high speeds, there is the possibility of sawdust or small chips flying out, which can be dangerous to the eyes. this should never be forgotten. Do not neglect safety precautions!

The main idea: before purchasing a tool, carefully study its capabilities, match it with your needs and then make a decision.

And now I propose in this video clip to look at the atypical possibilities of using a miter saw, except for a saw at right and other angles:

The feed-through miter saw has a distinctive feature: the working head with the saw blade is placed on two parallel strips and thus freely moves horizontally back and forth.

The design of the saw made it possible to saw large workpieces. up to 430 mm at an angle of 90 °, and the related field of application: woodworking and furniture production for the manufacture of doors and door frames, skirting boards, parquet.

Sliding miter saws: equipment features

  • The built-in U-shaped stop expands the working table and serves to securely hold oversized workpieces. A large part is additionally fixed with a clamp.
  • The laser pointer is increasingly used in equipment to clearly mark the line of the cut for the most accurate work.
  • Spindle lock function enables safe disc replacement.
  • The possibility of connecting a vacuum cleaner allows you to keep the workplace clean. sawdust does not cover the cutting line and does not penetrate the operator’s respiratory tract. Some models are equipped with dust bags.
  • A protective cover is included in the equipment package. It covers the working area of the tool, thus avoiding accidental injury to the operator.
