Disc for angle grinder for removing paint

Cleaning minor defects

To remove minor defects on the paintwork, an eccentric rotary vibration machine with an eccentric stroke of 5-8 mm, a rigid plate (for example, 115 mm in diameter) and grinding wheels of gradation P80 and P150 (the former are used in the main zone of the defect, the latter. on the peripheral areas ). Working speed. up to 10,000 rpm.

An example is the Rodcraft 7665 two-handed pneumatic clipper or the electric Festool WTS 150/7, the Sia 7-hole sanding pad and siadrive siafast sanding paper (see table at the end of the article).

Special circles SCM also effectively cope with the task. And not only when removing standard layers of enamels with small defects, but also when removing thick layers of paintwork. see the next subsection.

Welding points must be processed in order to:

  • remove the scale, since no paint and varnish material has adhesion to it;
  • minimize further filler work.

Many materials already described today are suitable for cleaning welded seams: siamet and siatop fiber discs, spiraband rollers, siaflap flap discs and siafix discs.

As a rule, the area to be treated is small in this case, so small siafix discs (50 and 75 mm in diameter) will be most convenient.

Siafix scraper discs and joint treatment with them

When processing welded seams, special attention should be paid to the effort applied to the “angle grinder”, because if the metal is burned out, it will again be scaled.

Paint stripping disc

In the last article, we talked about the initial stage of surface preparation for painting. its washing and degreasing. Now our virtual surface is ready for the next stage. removing the old paintwork that has become unusable, corrosion foci and other defects.

Petal circle.

A flap wheel is not originally a surface cleaning solution. It is designed for removing metal or other materials and has a special structure and properties of the abrasive grain itself. When performing non-standard tasks for it, removing paint and rust, the flap wheel is easily “clogged” with grinding products and can no longer do its job.

Petal circle after paint stripping.

At the same time, it can be practically not worn out. And when the circle is still new, after cleaning the paint and reaching the metal, it will “gnaw” it too, which will spoil the geometry of the surface of the product. Therefore, such a circle can be considered not the best option for cleaning old paint. While it will handle thick dross well in some cases, on pure metal.

About rust converters and paint removers

To remove rust and clean old paintwork to metal, Western firms recommend using exclusively mechanical means. grinders, “sandblasting”, brushes.

And none of the leading Western manufacturers of paintwork materials produces or recommends the use of converters or rust neutralizers. Of course, this is partly due to the fact that it is generally not customary to repair rotten parts there, but the main argument is that acid residues that are part of such products can provoke corrosion later, after painting. So using a rust converter for processing is tempting (especially if rust is everywhere), but risky.

But the remover of old paint in the arsenal of some companies is. it softens and swells the paint, after which it is removed with a spatula or grinder. However, the use of such washes is also quite dubious. The aggressive chemical composition of these reagents does not allow us to say with confidence that we will be able to completely remove them after use. This means that there are no guarantees that our new coating will not receive completely unwanted defects in this way. chemistry is chemistry. And even if a wash is used, then it needs to be applied only to the entire surface of the part (otherwise, the paint then swells at the borders anyway), which is inappropriate when removing small defects, say, a small dent.

Thus, the most effective method of cleaning paintwork defects to metal today is mechanical processing, that is, grinding. Modern grinding materials and technologies allow you to do this work without losing time to chemical methods, while completely without risk.

The defects that await us at this stage can be roughly divided into the following types:

  • minor defects (scratches, chips, small dents),
  • large damage (parts after straightening, thick layers of old repair coatings, putty masses, primers),
  • hotbeds of corrosion,
  • welds,
  • anti-gravel coating,
  • sticky tapes.

Let’s figure out which tools and materials will be most effective in each case.

If the part is new and covered with poor quality shipping primer, then it must also be removed. about it here.

Removing adhesive tapes

Another problem that repairmen face is removing adhesive tapes from the surface (those on which moldings and emblems are attached).

If earlier they were removed mainly by manual scraping, spending a lot of time, nerves and not entirely censorship expressions on this, now they can be quickly and efficiently removed with the help of special rubber circles in a matter of minutes.

It is advisable to work at a speed of 2000-4000. Too high revolutions and strong pressure of the sander can lead to overheating of the paintwork, so be careful.

Grinding wheel for cleaning the CIBO surface

Cibo discs for paint and rust removal

This is the younger brother of the CD circle. The younger one, because it works more delicately. it has less abrasive grain and thinner nylon thread. What does it do? The circle is softer and more elastic, can handle more curved surfaces and at the same time leave less roughness.

It perfectly removes paint, rust, large dirt. But with solid dross it is already more difficult for him to cope.

This makes it an excellent wheel for machining, for example, stainless steel or even aluminum.

  • High removal rate of paint, rust and other coatings.
  • Does not heat metal.
  • Soft, suitable for curved surfaces.
  • Fine-grained, leaves a high surface quality, suitable for stainless steel and other metals.
  • Requires variable speed angle grinder.
  • Not suitable for rough handling.

Metal brushes.

This is a product intended for cleaning surfaces from various coatings, it will be rust and paint or scale. Depending on the type of work, there is a wide variety of shapes and types of brushes. Angle grinder brushes come in corrugated wire or braided.

The former are rather soft and clean the metal more delicately, they can better approach uneven surfaces or welds.

Harness brushes are more aggressive, they better clean hard surfaces, but at the same time they are less elastic and more difficult to pick up in irregularities.

But with all possible combinations, metal brushes cannot always provide the required surface quality and remove the required coating layer if it is especially hard.

How i use an angle grinder to remove old paint and how to replace a disc

For effective operation, the brushes require high revolutions, and in combination with a large (in comparison with KLT) weight, this generates a high level of vibration, which does not have a favorable effect on the operator during prolonged work.

disc, angle, grinder, removing, paint

Apart from comfort, metal brushes are not the safest way to do our jobs. Even from the highest quality and most expensive brushes, a wire flies out during operation, periodically clinging to the sharp edges of the product. And flying out such parts can easily injure the operator or at least cause discomfort.

These are two common options for solving the described problem:

  • the first is used because it is often already at hand and does not require additional steps and costs to acquire it.
  • the second, because it is affordable and effective enough for use on the farm or small workshops.

And now we will tell you about discs for removing rust and paint from the field of professional use.

Not even necessarily old, maybe new paint. If you painted and the color is wrong for you.

Cleaning metal surfaces before painting, before welding, after painting in case of defects are tasks that have to be performed regularly in industries or in small workshops. In addition, you may need to perform such work even in everyday life, for example, when repairing a summer house, a balcony, or it may be related to a hobby.

And we have several most effective solutions for this, and today we will tell you about the advantages and features of each of these products.

But before talking about them, let’s pay a little attention to those methods that are already used today. This will enable us to better see the benefits of special products.

Angle Grinder Paint Removal Attachments

Removing paint from walls or metal surfaces, as well as removing rust, takes a lot of effort and time. Therefore, it is sometimes impossible to do without the use of a power tool. As a device to facilitate the process, you can use an angle grinder (angle grinder) with special grinding attachments.

The features of its use are:

  • May only be used with a grinder equipped with a second auxiliary handle. For safety reasons, only hold the angle grinder with two hands.
  • It is allowed to remove the protective cover, since the body of the nozzle is one-piece, and the probability of its destruction is very small. However, protection from flying chips is required: gloves, glasses, clothing.

Cutters are designed for:

Wood polishing attachments

Wheels, discs and brushes are used for wood polishing. Their working parts are made of fine sandpaper, felt, sponge and other materials.

Polishing and Grinding

There are many types of such circles. They can be cloth, spongy, felt and with replaceable abrasive.

To work with them, it is necessary to use special pastes with fine abrasives, as well as various liquids. Fine abrasive wheels are used for cleaning and coarse grinding. The use of discs for grinding makes it possible to bring the surface of any material to the desired roughness. These angle grinder attachments are used for polishing the car body.

These disks can be divided into the following types:

  • Twisted cones.
  • Sharpening abrasive.
  • Rough diamond.
  • Twisted cones are used for roughing stone and metal surfaces when removing old cement mortar or dried paint. The roller cutter consists of two steel cups. Steel wire brushes are located along their perimeter. Depending on the type of processing, the wire can have a different diameter.
  • Grinding discs are used for sharpening cutting tools, cleaning welded seams. Most often, such nozzles are used on low-power grinders, since they are more convenient to work with such discs. Sharpening discs differ from cut-off models in shape and thickness. In the middle of the disc there is a recess that allows sharpening with the flat surface of the disc. Its thickness is usually at least 5 mm.
  • Diamond roughing discs are similar in design to grinding wheels. The difference is that the diamond disc works only with its peripheral part, which has cutting edges. Also, the diamond roughing disc is not suitable for metal processing. It serves for roughing stone, concrete and other similar materials. For roughing hardened cement mortar, a diamond disc is perfect.

Angle grinder attachments greatly enhance the functionality of your grinder. angle grinders are widely used in construction and many other fields. And together with various attachments, they become versatile equipment.

Devices for rough processing

This category includes two types of attachments.

Overview of grinding and grinding wheels for an angle grinder

Removing paint from walls or metal surfaces, as well as removing rust, takes a lot of effort and time. Therefore, it is sometimes impossible to do without the use of a power tool. As a device to facilitate the process, you can use an angle grinder (angle grinder) with special grinding attachments.

From metal surfaces

For roughing work on metal, whether it is removing a layer of old paint or removing rust, craftsmen use brushes. They look like a brush made of twisted or non-twisted metal wire inserted into a metal glass, or a disc made of the same wire.

From the craftsmen who used the brushes for roughing metal work, you can hear complaints that small pieces of wire fly off the nozzle and bite into clothes.

Depending on what kind of roughing work you want to carry out, the thickness and rigidity of the brushes are selected. It should be borne in mind that the metal wire used in brushes leaves scratches on the surface to be treated. Therefore, for removing paint, for example, from a car body, it is better not to use them. They can only be useful for removing rust and paintwork from hard-to-reach places.

For metal-friendly roughing, it is better to use special discs made of silicone carbide fibers (XCS). they are usually black. Also for these purposes, Clean and Strip discs, which are more resistant to wear, are used. They are blue in color, have a similar structure, but are composed of nylon threads.

This grinding wheel is available in 2 versions: for a drill and for an angle grinder. A distinctive feature of it from other types of nozzles for removing paint from metal is that it does not clog and does not damage the metal in the form of scratches. They also successfully remove welding spatter, rust, various sealants and anti-corrosion coatings.

Clean and Strip discs have good wear resistance and can be used until completely erased.

Often, flap attachments for an angle grinder are used to remove paint from metal. They represent a disk with sandpaper glued to its plane in the form of petals.

For rough surface treatment, nozzles with a large grain size are used. For finishing work, it is necessary to select a grinding wheel with fine sandpaper. Although this sanding disc will wear out quickly and become clogged with remnants of stripped paint, it can be easily repaired. How this is done can be understood from this video.

Paint Remover Tips

Old paint most often has to be removed from either walls or metal surfaces. Different types of angle grinder attachments are used in each case.

From the walls

First of all, in order to remove paint from the wall, craftsmen try to use brushes with thick twisted wire (discussed above). This method is quite effective, but a lot of dust is generated during roughing work. Therefore, it is necessary to use protective equipment (goggles, respirator). It is also recommended to use a vacuum cleaner with a special attachment that completely hides the brush.

In addition to removing paint from walls, you can remove a layer of old plaster, primer or putty with an angle grinder.

Bowl nozzles are also used to remove paint from concrete walls. the angle grinder must be held at such an angle that the paint layer is removed, but the tool does not deepen into the wall.

In addition to roughing work, this nozzle is also used for leveling surfaces, removing various sagging on the wall, for removing plaster, putty, etc.

Sharpening discs

This category of discs is designed for rough metal work. The sharpening disc can be used for cleaning welded seams, chamfering cut metal parts, and for sharpening tools (drills, chisels, etc.) if there is no grinder nearby.

It is worth knowing that when installing such a disc, the revolutions on an angle grinder must be set to the minimum or not exceeding the values indicated on the abrasive wheel.

As a rule, grinding wheels are more often used on small grinders, since they are more convenient to use for cleaning metal.

The grinding wheel can be distinguished from the cut-off wheel in thickness (at least 5 mm) and by the presence of a recess in the center for more convenient use of the plane of the disc for sharpening the tool.
