Dismantling of a hand starter

First you need to remove the engine from your car model, then remove the hand starter from the engine using a suitable screwdriver. To turn the fasteners of a hand starter for small engines (.12 and.15), you need a cross screwdriver #1 or a small screwdriver with a flat blade. Some engines may require the use of hexagonal screwdrivers, make sure that you use a suitable screwdriver, or you can damage the screws.

The only tool that you will need to cross your hand starter is pliers with thin lips, although the cross screwdriver #2 can also be useful if the diameter of the screwdriver rod is 6 mm. This is the inner diameter of the overturning bearing in a manual starter for our engines 15FE, 15SS and 12R SS, and this screwdriver will come in handy when assembling a hand starter. Below is the image of two hand starters for various engines. These are manual starters used to use this demonstration.

Please note that hand starters are equipped with various types of overtaking bearings (metal details of hexagonal shape in the center). HPI engines use both types of overtaking bearings. Both types of overtaking bearings work in a similar way, you just have to be aware that the overtaking bearing shown in the image may not correspond to the one that is installed in your manual starter.

Please note that the side with a beveled edge of the silver overturning bearing is located on the open side of the manual starter.

The first step of the bulkhead is the disassembly of the entire manual starter to the component parts. We will start with a plastic clip that holds everything in place.

Be careful and do not use too much effort to extract a clip, it should snap back when you finish the bulkhead of a manual starter.

Use pliers to carefully remove the overtaking bearing. Try not to drop it on the floor, you don’t want dirt or extraneous objects to ruin the bearing.

Look inside and you will see how the inner end of the spring is wrapped inside the C-shaped part, formed inside the case of a manual starter.

Place your thumb over the spring of the spring and pull the starter handle slightly so that you can stretch out the end of the spring from the plastic nest that holds the spring in place.

When you free the end of the spring, pull out the spring node outward. This part holds the springs, so be careful so that the spring does not jump out and does not hit you.

Remember, be careful when you extract the springs node! A spring tangle showed below may be the result of problems that took place before disassembling a manual starter, or may be the result of your negligence when extracting a spring node.

After extracting the spring, pay attention to the curl on the end of the spring. If it is violated, as an example below, this may be the result of normal wear and fatigue of the spring, excessive jerks of a manual starter, too long pulling out the cord when starting the engine or attempts to start a flooded engine.

Sometimes you can see the problem even before disassembling a hand starter. An example below shows a spring with a deformed curl at the end, which we showed you above.

An excess on this spring is the result of the user error, and not the cycles of the spring during operation.

The spring for a manual starter is made of spring steel, which is thermomed and specially curved for the maximum service life. Below you can see a completely new spring. Pay attention to the ends of the spring where the metal is thermal. You can see a blue-violet tint on a segment of about 2 cm from each end.

Keep this in mind, any spring steel part that bends more than the design is broken, the only question is how soon it will happen. You can straighten the above spring back to its shape in order to continue using it, but keep in mind that this is only an “emergency” solution, you must be aware that the spring can collapse and this will happen very soon.

There are two methods of winding the spring back to the place. We will show both methods, they both require approximately the same efforts.

The first method begins with the hooking of the sharply curved end of the spring for the corresponding slot in the spring node.

Then you just wrap the spring counterclockwise until the spring is completely wound inside the spring. The trick of this method consists in holding the spring in place with the help of the thumb, this does not allow the spring to jump back.

The second winding method uses your hands instead of a spring unit, it is a little faster, but it requires great effort from your fingers in order to hold the spring in place. Remember that the spring needs to be wrapped counterclockwise, as shown in the image below.

Starter repair work
