Dog Box With His Own Hands
If the owner decided to create a house for a pet with his own hands, then the first thing he should think about is the place where the booth will stand. This place should have good lighting, be dry, but it is better if the dog has the opportunity to hide in the shade.
Well, if the pet will have a view on all corners of the plot, and the house will be well viewed. If the dog cannot control the whole territory, then he will not be able to feel calm and comfortable either.
An important factor for placing a booth is the presence of a small elevation. This will allow it to remain dry, because moisture will not accumulate under the house. Well, if it is not standing directly on the ground, but on a foundation made of wood and covered with roofing material. This will allow the dog to live in a house equipped with a kind of ventilation and protect it from excess moisture.
A kennel must be designed for any weather conditions. In order for the dog to live in a room as warm as possible, the booth is divided into two parts – a kind of vestibule should be located near the entrance, and then the dog goes to the place of sleep.
What size should have a booth
The next step should be to determine its size. The measurements taken from the pet can help to understand what size will be optimal.
High-rise is planned at the rate of 10-15 cm higher than the height of the dog at the withers. It is necessary to remember that the litter has its height, even if it is insignificant. If a dog that has tilted its head can move in a booth without effort or sit in it so that its head does not touch the ceiling, then its size is found correctly.
In depth the footage of the house for a pet must be calculated so that the dog can stretch out lying on its side. Calculate the depth can be measured by the growth of the dog at the withers, when he lies on his side, and adding to this 20 cm.
The width of the kennel should be the sum of the footage of both "rooms". If the size of the dog, measured from the tailbone to the tip of his nose, add 20 cm, then this figure will be the most comfortable for the dog bed size. The size of the vestibule is calculated relative to the build of the pet – the dog must freely, without obstacles and without squeezing, enter and exit the booth.
The manhole for entry is measured by the following parameters: it must be up to 15 cm tall and less than the height of the pet at the withers, and its width must be 5-8 cm longer than the width of the dog’s chest.
If the booth is too spacious relative to the dog size – it is not convenient for the pet. In winter, warming up a large-sized booth will be difficult, and the dog may freeze.
Appropriate reception, in which the vestibule is more than a place to sleep. During the heat, the dog will comfortably relax in such a room lying down. In the bed, the pet will be in the cold season, basking and curling up. This means that the place intended for sleeping can be performed a little less relative to the vestibule. Basic dimensions are not subject to change. It will only be necessary to recalculate the width of the “rooms”.
When the place and dimensions are chosen, you need to sketch on paper a sketch, in accordance with which a drawing of the house for the dog will be created. Such an action will help to calculate the necessary amount of materials that will be needed for construction. Coniferous wood is suitable for the manufacture of kennels.
Be sure to create useful:
- bars of 100 100, 50 50 and 40 40 cm;
- decorative slats;
- galvanized nails;
- mineral wool;
We independently prepare the base for the house
The bottom – the very first part of the kennel, which must be made. The floor should be made warm, there should be no gap in it. Otherwise there will be constant drafts. A dog can seriously be injured if there is a claw stuck in the slot. The framework for the bottom should be made of bars measuring 40 40 cm. Flooring can serve as a flooring.
When the bottom is ready, you need to attach one bar 100 100 in each corner. Between them, bars 40 40 should be installed, along their length they should be equal to the height of the kennel. Their task is to support the roof. It is possible to add two more bars to mark the entrance.
Drawings for dog kennels:
Walls and ceiling in a kennel
Wooden lining will be suitable for internal covering of the kennel. It is better not to use plywood for such purposes – over time it can become stratified.
The material with which the walls are sheathed from the outside, must be resistant to moisture. An excellent material for exterior cladding will be a block house or lining. Metal sheets are not very good material for covering the kennel. It is better to use plastic eurolining. Fixed trim nails.
Making a roof
The roof should be able to be removed completely or lean back. The process of cleaning or providing medical care to your pet is very difficult if such a condition is not met.
There are two options for making roofs:
- The roof of the booth is at the same time its ceiling.
- The ceiling and roof are made separately. Then a loft appears between the roof and the booth.
If the booth is located under a roof or in a dog enclosure, the first method of manufacture is appropriate. When a house for a dog is supposed to be in the open air, a second option will be a more rational solution. You can also make a roof that will have a slope. This will allow the roof to avoid moisture accumulation during precipitation and, as a result, dampness.
It is possible to make a ceiling from bars 40 40 and plywood, picked up by the size. If the booth is supposed to be large, then in the middle of the ceiling you need to add additional bars. This will help avoid plywood sagging.
The ceiling is insulated with parchment, special wool or foam. When creating a double insulated ceiling you need to lay a sheet of plywood insulation. After the first sheet, you need to sew on top of the second.
If the kennel is located in an open area, then the roof must be laid with shingles and roofing material. This will save the house of your pet from excess moisture.
If the roof is assumed, then it can be attached only some time after the ceiling is established.
To the bottom of the kennel was moisture resistant, it must be treated with an antiseptic impregnator, turning the kennel on its side. Roofing material is fixed on the bottom of the booth and two reinforcing bars 100 50 are nailed, which should be pre-treated with an antiseptic.
Bottom from the inside you need to lay parchment before laying it in the booth. Fix the parchment can be using a construction stapler. Then follows the stage of laying insulation, and on top – another layer of parchment. He will protect the booth from hitting particles of glass wool. After warming the bottom of the floor creeps.
Warming the walls of the kennel is made on the same principle. Then you can make the threshold and frame for manhole.
Roof and additional insulation of the entrance
At the first stage of manufacturing the roof, the perimeters of 40 40 bars should be assembled. It is necessary to sheathe their clapboard, and on the inside you can attach glassine. In the front gable, it is possible to cut a window into the attic room where the pet’s personal belongings will be stored.
If necessary, a variant of the removable roof. To do this, you need to drill a hole up to 10 cm deep, in which you need to insert nails with a sawed off cap. Then holes are drilled in the gables under the nails. It is necessary for structural strength to strengthen the roof frame with longitudinal and transverse bars. The most suitable material for this – lining.
After completion of the work with the booth, it is worth making the booth treatment with a pinotex from the outside. Inside painting, varnishing and other processing of walls and floors is not recommended. This can cause pet poisoning.
To further insulate the booth, you can hang a kind of curtain around the manhole, which will be made of tarpaulin. "Weights" of sandbags, sewn in pockets at the bottom of such a curtain, will allow the tarpaulin not to rise under the influence of the wind. Polyethylene will help the sand not to get wet with precipitation and not to freeze in winter.
Creating a drawing
To properly make a booth, determine its shape and size. It is not necessary to build too complex a structure: the presence of extra partitions, ladders, protrusions and similar elements will greatly interfere with the dog.
A good option is a rectangular doghouse with a side entrance and a lean-to roof, where a pet can bask in the sun. It is desirable to make the roof or one of the walls removable, which will allow you to quickly and easily disinfect the booth.
The size of the booth should correspond to a specific dog, so when drawing up a sketch, measurements should be taken: height at withers, length from nose to tail, chest width and height of the dog.
You can define the parameters of the frame:
- the width and height of the booth is equal to the height of the dog 5 cm;
- the depth of the booth is 5 cm longer than the length of the animal;
- the width of the manhole corresponds to the width of the chest 5 cm;
- height of the manhole is more than the height of the dog at the withers by 5 cm.
To calculate the parameters of the booth for a puppy, you must use data from specialized directories. So, on paper they draw an approximate design drawing, transfer to it all the necessary measurements. It remains to determine the materials for the booth. Most often houses for dogs are made of wood; This material is the most environmentally friendly, convenient in work, inexpensive. The use of conifers is especially recommended.
Why can not keep a dog in the barn
Having household buildings on the site, the owner of the dog prefers not to build a separate house for her, but maintains in a barn.
It is strictly contraindicated:
- the darkness of the barn keeps the dog constantly alert and very poorly tolerated by animals;
- the constant reaction to sounds made by insects or rodents causes irritation, nervousness and anxiety in animals;
- the heat given off by the dog’s body will heat a small building, but not a shed;
- from the barn it is impossible to observe what is happening outside; this results in depression of the dog, lethargy, heart disease;
- barn lighting does not replace daylight with electricity, it has a bad effect on vision;
- absolutely unacceptable dogs in conjunction with farm animals and poultry.
Choosing a location
Before the construction of the dog kennel, you need to find a suitable place for its location.
For this you need:
- the location of the kennel must be dry and moderately sunny;
- next to the booth should not be other pets, their waste products adversely affect the health of the pet;
- the place should be spacious and free to move;
- Remember, any objects located nearby, can be a favorite entertainment for your pet;
- the dog from the booth must see everything that happens around, all family members and guests, otherwise he will always be excited about something.
Design and materials
Dog houses can be varied, both inside and outside. The simplest version of the kennel is a square, usually rectangular shape with a manhole closed by some kind of cloth.
A more thoughtful and comfortable dog is a booth with a vestibule. It protects the pet from cold, rain, snow and wind much better. Basically, the vestibule is not insulated, however, heat loss can be further reduced by securing a layer of foam or mineral wool, and hang a curtain at the entrance, for example, from an old overcoat.
Individual words deserves the choice of material. Pine and larch will be the best wood species for this purpose. The booth from pine boards can serve 10 – 13 years. This means that the dog will be able to dwell in it until old age.
Larch is a more expensive material that benefits pine in terms of durability. The choice of wood owners decide, based on financial opportunities.
For the installation of the roof, the same solutions are applied as for the home roofing. In the construction of a doghouse is not recommended to use natural tiles. The floor in the pet’s house cannot be stone or concrete: it is cold materials, a dog in such conditions runs the risk of arthritis. Ideally, the floor in the kennel is made of dry wooden planks.
The elements that make up the floor must be precisely adjusted to prevent gaps. Otherwise, cracks in the floor can cause injury to the animal. If the floor covering is slightly inclined towards the exit, this will make the cleaning procedure easier.
Pine and spruce boards are the best material for building a doghouse; it is not only durable and practical, but also capable of repelling various intrusive insects with its smell.
Brick, plywood, foam blocks – not the best choice for a kennel, over time, these materials will begin to delaminate.
For the frame fit the bars of 40 × 40 (50 × 50) or 40 × 25 (50 × 25) millimeters. For exterior plating – wooden lining, plastic eurolining, etc. For interior lining – lining or waterproof plywood with a thickness of at least 5 millimeters. A tongue-and-groove batten is suitable as a floor covering for a kennel. Mineral wool, polystyrene – will serve as an excellent insulation.
