Fixture Sawing Under 45 Degrees

Sometimes you need to trim a particular part or product at a certain angle. As a rule, you need to trim baguettes, fillets, platbands, plinths and other similar interior elements at an angle of 45 degrees. Everyone can cope with this task. The main thing is not to rush, not to be nervous and everything will work out.

Buy finished corner elements

For example, with regard to baguette or fillet, special corner elements are sold to them that fit perfectly into the corner and do not need to be trimmed. It is enough to simply stick them in their place and press them down well.

The method of joining platbands without undercutting

Platbands today often do not cut at an angle to then dock with each other, but make a joint at right angles. This method of joining platbands does not require any special trimming, which is very convenient. In addition, this method looks more modern and attractive.

Miter cuts using a miter box

If, nevertheless, it is necessary to cut one or another part at an angle, then it is worth stocking up with a miter box. the simplest device that looks like a small box. The miter box has slots that are designed for a saw or a long sharp knife. Of course, these slots are made so that they form an even and accurate angle of 45 degrees.

However, the miter box can have many slots at once, from different angles. This is convenient, because with the help of a single device, you can cut any parts at different angles.

Fixture Sawing Under 45 Degrees

There are adjustable miter boxes on sale. The slots of such a miter box can be adjusted, which allows the master to set exactly the angle that is currently required. In particular, it is quite simple to translate the slots of such a miter box to a position of 45 degrees.

Now the workpiece can be cut elementarily. A baguette, platband or baseboard is placed in the miter box, after which the saw is inserted into the slots and the excess is cut off elementarily. The angle is ultimately perfect, exactly 45 degrees.

What to do if there is no bite? Very simple. You need to make a template according to which it will not be difficult to transfer the necessary markup to the workpieces. As a template, you can choose a thick cardboard or something else that will be appropriate in this case.

Cutting parts at an angle with a protractor

You can trim the part at an angle using a protractor. This is a measuring tool that is easy to use, and which is designed specifically to measure angles or make the necessary marking on certain parts. The protractor is applied to the part, mark the corner and make markings with a pencil. With this markup, cutting the workpiece at the right angle is not difficult.

Using patterns

If there is no protractor, miter box or ready-made corner elements, you will have to look for a suitable template. Of course, the template should have the right angle. It is applied to the workpiece and the workpiece is marked with a pencil. This is one of the easiest ways to achieve the desired result.

In-place pruning

Not always the walls, floor and ceiling will be in practice perfectly even. Most often they have irregularities. For this reason, there is no need to cut the workpieces at clear and precise angles, because they still will not fit perfectly.

Instead, it is sometimes convenient to trim the same ceiling plinth in place. That is, first one plinth plank is glued, cut it in the corner, and the second plank is cut under it.

Of course, it’s hardly possible to cut off the workpiece perfectly. However, if a small gap appears in the corner, it can always be covered with putty or gypsum plaster. Nothing special.

When installing skirting boards, it is important to correctly form the corners. They often spoil the big picture. How to make a corner on the baseboard. external and internal, how and with what to cut. We will discuss all this further.

Types of indoor corners

When installing skirting boards, you need to somehow draw the corners. In appearance, the angles are external (which protrude forward) and internal (for example, the angles in a room). In rooms with normal geometry, the angles are right, i.e. 90 °. When joining two pieces of plinth in the corner, they are cut so that each has an angle of 45 °.

To make the outer and inner corner, the baseboard must be cut

But how to make a corner on the baseboard so that it is exactly forty-five degrees? To do this, use a special carpentry tool. a miter box.

Skirting miter box

A carpenter’s miter box is a device for cutting at a certain angle. It is used with a hacksaw. In principle, you can make the miter box yourself by collecting the guide from the boards and making cuts in the walls. On sale there are various models costing from 15 to several hundred dollars. They differ in capabilities, materials, although all are called "miter box". Professional models are made on the basis of a good hacksaw, have a scale that allows you to set the saw as it should. With such a tool, it is not a problem to set any desired cutting angle in order to properly cut the skirting board for a perfect fit.

Professional Carpentry Miter Box. Wide Range Tool

The simplest miter box is a plastic U-shaped profile, in the walls of which cuts are formed. These slots are used as a guide for a hacksaw. They do not allow the canvas to deviate. In any case, there are two cuts. straight and at 45 degrees. Some may have a couple more options.

How to gash the baseboard at 45 degrees? One way is to use the miter box

Sometimes a hacksaw is included, sometimes not. Usually the ones in the kit are not too good. Any hacksaw can be used by selecting a blade for the material to be cut. It is important that the canvas moves freely in the slots.

How to cut a skirting board in the inner corners: an action plan in steps

Start installing skirting boards in one of the corners. If this is the first experience for you, choose the part of the room in which something will stand. Not always, it’s over, the first pancake is lumpy, but it’s better to play it safe. To make the corner on the baseboard neat, work without rushing. One sawed off, checked, fitted. We pass to the following. It is better to fasten after two adjacent corners are assembled. But you shouldn’t postpone the assembly too.

Trimming the baseboard in the corners requires certain skills. But having made several joints yourself, you can beautifully design complex corners

How to use a miter box to cut skirting boards? Place the device in front of you, preferably on a table, but you can also on the floor. Which side it does not matter to turn, it is symmetrical. In the profile, insert the bar, rotate it as it will stand against the wall. When washing a floor plinth in a miter box, the “wall” is that wall that is farther from you. Once again: firmly press the baseboard into the back wall in the position in which it will be installed. Insert the hacksaw into the required slots. You can start sawing.

First joint in the room

The first plinth trim must be cut as close to the edge as possible. Carpenters have their own jargon and they say “slaughter” a corner. No matter what you call it, it’s important that in the miter box we set the bar so as to make a cut at the very beginning. For the cut line we push the bar a short distance, for starters it can be 1-2 cm. Cutting a smaller piece is more difficult, so leave the savings “for later” when at least some skill appears.

In the miter box, the plinth is placed at the far wall "facing" to ourselves. So it’s easier to check whether you are cutting / sawing correctly

Next, make the corner on the baseboard as follows:

  1. We lay the baseboard in the miter box, press it against the wall opposite to us. We expose it in the mounting position. how it will stand against the wall.
  2. Insert the hacksaw into the desired slots (see the figure below).
  3. We move the bar so that it slightly extends beyond the cut line.
  4. Cut off.
  5. We take the second piece of the plinth, repeat the same operations, but we change the position of the saw on the miter to the opposite. We insert the bar on the other side. Be careful here, otherwise you will have to redo it several times, since the connection will not work.

How to cut the floor skirting board in the miter box: for the external and internal joints

We got two pieces sawn for docking in the inner corner. To make the joint perfect, try on the details in place. Most likely, there are some flaws. We take sandpaper with medium grain, remove everything that interferes with docking. Then, with fine grain, we achieve a tight connection without cracks and gaps.

When connecting baseboards in the corner, use transparent silicone sealant. Before installing the fasteners, a layer of silicone is applied to the slice. Immediately after the baseboard is fixed, remove the excess that has appeared on the outside. We remove to an absolutely clean surface. This method of joining skirting boards in the corners looks more neat, it does not clog dirt and dust.

How to cut the corner of the baseboard at the right distance

The second and all other corners of the skirting boards must be done at a certain distance. If the next angle is again internal and the distance to it is less than the length of the bar, we use the same fragment that already has a gash. We measure the distance with a tape measure. strictly from corner to corner. Then this distance is laid on the bar using the same tape measure. The beginning of the measuring tape is combined with the protrusion, we measure the required distance, make a mark with a pencil. She will be the starting point for the cut.

You need to know at what distance to cut

The skirting board with a mark is laid in the miter box, the desired direction of washing is chosen. The dash can be combined with a hacksaw blade or with a slot in the miter box. To whom it is convenient. Cut off. This segment must be "tried on" in place. If both corners rest against opposite walls or the gap is only 1 mm, then everything is fine. You can cut the second bar from a new piece for the design of the joint. And again, remove the flaws with sandpaper.

If the wall length is longer than the length of the plinth plank, take a new plank. We’ll slaughter the second corner on it. It is important not to make a mistake in which direction to cut. By setting both planks along the wall, mark the connection point on one of them and make a direct cut. For a direct cut in the miter box, there are also slots. So there will be no problems.

How to connect two skirting boards on a straight line

But the joint in a straight line does not always look perfect, and during operation it often diverges, forming a visible gap. If you want, you can cut at an angle (any) two levels.

To do this, first cut off the edge of one bar at an angle, mark the second connection point. A mark is placed on the side of the baseboard that is pressed against the wall. At this point, we saw off another section, without changing the position of the saw relative to the miter box, but inserting the bar on the other side. The joint is obtained obliquely. He is more accurate. Especially the difference is visible on wooden skirting boards and MDF. The slice, again, is brought to mind using sandpaper.

We make an external joint

In apartments or houses there are not only internal corners, but also external ones. In this case, first cut the nearest inner corner, modify it. When it is ready, you can make the outer corner on the baseboard. We put the bar in the corner, as it should be. In the place of the outer corner with a pencil, make a mark exactly at the place of rotation.

How to make the outer corner of the skirting board

Then we transfer the bar to the miter box, select the appropriate position. In order not to make a mistake, always imagine how the baseboard is standing against the wall and what you should be able to do.

Saw the second segment at 45 degrees so that it docked with the finished one. To do this, we change the position of the saw to the opposite and start the baseboard on the other side.

How to make the skirting angle greater or less than 90 °

Not all angles have exactly 90 degrees. If the deviation is small, the gaps can be removed with sandpaper. In other cases, you have to mark and cut, taking into account the real degree. The main task in this case is to find a point on the floor where the two skirting boards will dock.

Let’s start by explaining how to cut the outer corner correctly if it is not 90 degrees. We take the bar, put it to the corner from one of the sides, firmly press it to the wall. as it should stand. Along the bottom edge of the baseboard, draw a line on the floor with a pencil. We put the bar on the other side of the corner, do the same. The intersection of the two lines will be the docking point of the two skirting boards.

How to dock a skirting board if the angle is less than or greater than 90 degrees

Now we again place the baseboard, set it in the way it will be attached. We make two marks: at the top at the turn, at the bottom at the place where the lines drawn by us intersect. Now an important task: it is necessary to make a cut on these marks. If there is a miter saw or miter box with an adjustable tilt of the saw. set it and cut it. If not, carefully cut with a hacksaw. In order not to get off, you can use a pencil to put a fishing line on which you need to saw. Similarly, mark and cut off the second part. We finalize the connection of the skirting boards with sandpaper.

Few professionals handle sandpaper joints. this is time and additional work. But if you join the baseboards in the corners in your own house, with your own hands, you definitely want everything to be beautiful. This requires this manual debugging.

With an internal corner of a non-standard size, everything is exactly the same. We put the baseboard in the corner, draw a straight line on the floor. We do it on the other hand. Transfer the intersection point to the slats.

How and how to cut a plastic baseboard

All of the above applies to MDF skirting boards and wood. Cutting them with an ordinary hacksaw is not a problem. It is advisable to take a sheet of metal, as it has a finer tooth and saw cut is smoother, less work with sandpaper. With plastic, the situation is different. when you try to cut a piece, some thin-walled baseboards crumble and break.

Plastic cutting is not very convenient due to thin walls

To cut the normal quality of plastic skirting boards, you can use:

  • Hacksaw for metal.
  • angle grinder (angle grinder) with a diamond disc.
  • Turning miter saw. Before cutting, accelerate the disk and only then start cutting.
  • Jigsaw and file with a small tooth. Here you have to try. pick up speed and file.
  • Sharp knife.
  • Scissors for metal. In any case, direct cuts by them are easy to do.

To determine what is more convenient for you to cut a plastic floor skirting, only personal experience will help. If you have a miter saw, try using it. Not a problem a couple of times to try the angle grinder with a diamond disc. If all this does not give a normal result, try a hacksaw, a jigsaw or a knife. There are, of course, special scissors for plastic, but for a single use they are too expensive to buy.

Accessories for the design of corners and joints of PVC skirting boards

In plastic skirting boards, corners and joints can be formed using special fittings. There are external and internal corners, plugs and connectors. In principle, they allow you to assemble the desired configuration. Each manufacturer makes his own accessories. for his own profile, colors. But the principle of their use is the same.

How to make corners of a plastic baseboard

The first rule is that all cuts are made straight. Strictly perpendicular. Marks in the corners are set back 1-1.5 mm from the corner. The fact is that the accessories for rigidity have their own jumpers. Here for them it is also necessary to retreat a couple of millimeters, but no more. Otherwise, a gap will appear or the skirting boards will pop out of these corners.

Here is the result of the assembly

I must say that not everyone likes the look of plastic corners. You can make a corner on a PVC skirting board in the same way as described for wood or MDF. The only difficulty is that you have to be careful with plastic. it breaks down from excessive efforts. There is one trick. before cutting a plastic baseboard, add a little mounting foam on the back and wait for the polymerization to begin. It will be tougher, easier to cut, less deformation. If the foam subsequently interferes, it is not a problem to remove it, but cutting, and it is true, is easier.

How to connect with a door platband

You know how to make a corner on the baseboard neatly, but that’s not all. The room most often has doors. By the way, they must be installed before fixing the skirting boards. So, you still need to properly dock skirting boards with platbands on the door. If you just cut off exactly, it turns out roughly. There are stubs for plastic. not the most elegant way, but quite acceptable. Wooden can also be trimmed by cutting the “face” obliquely. Also “not ice”, but already something. And what to do with MDF skirting boards, because they drank unpresentable from them? There is a way to arrange a beautiful junction with the jambs. It will be necessary to make two cuts at an angle of 45 degrees (see photo below).

How to properly arrange the joint of the plinth and the door jamb

If the edge is not even, first we cut it off strictly perpendicularly. Relatively aligned edges make a cut at 45 degrees. A small cut off piece will be useful to us for making adjacencies. The second section is made at 90 degrees relative to the first, but if you lower the perpendicular from the corner, it also turns out 45 °.

How to make a neat fit to the door jamb

Now we take the first cut piece, apply it to the cut just made with the long side. It turns out a beautiful rounded slice. If there are chamfers, notches on the baseboard, they match perfectly. In the case of a wood pattern, one cannot be sure that the lines coincide. Anyway, such a junction of the plinth and door cashing is much more aesthetic.

Platband. patch frame inherent to the door or window opening. This is a decorative piece made in the form of curly planks. There are carved platbands, their difference is that they are made of wood and are often decorated with plentiful carvings. The role of the frame is not only decorative, it allows you to slightly eliminate such unwanted blowing in the area of the gap between the wall and the window or door frame, by overlapping.

Ways to cut platbands at 45 degrees without resorting to using miter box

The easiest way is to use an ordinary protractor, which is in every house where a school-age child lives. With his help, markup is not so difficult.

Important:
It’s important that he drank himself. To avoid the formation of cracks, it is recommended to use a hacksaw not for wood, but for metal. Yes, this method requires more time, but for that the cut will be much more accurate and even.

When the marking using the protractor is done, you need to position the platband on a horizontal surface so that the front side is at the top. It is recommended to cut along the entire plane of the clypeus.

If there are no stationery nearby, you can use the usual tile, with which you can draw an angle of 90 degrees. Dividing it into 2 halves, we get a template for a 45-degree angle, which can be used for marking instead of the miter box.

If there is a ruler. the task is simplified immediately several times. You just need to take sheet A-4 and draw a square, and then draw the bisectors of the corners. To make it more convenient, you can take a small board and attach it to one of the corners, which will fix the structure. Well, then you need to attach the platband and start sawing.

How to make a miter box at home?

If the above methods are not to your liking. you can make a miter box at home on your own. Miter box. a device resembling a tray in its shape, which has a U-shaped shape.

It is equipped with cuts for saws designed to cut the material at a certain angle. The dimensions of the parts are not very important, but the wider our home-made device will be, the wider and more accurately we will be able to saw wide rails.

Important:
Everything needs to be done wisely, it is also not worth overdoing it, because if the width of the miter box exceeds half the width of the hacksaw, it will be inconvenient to saw.

You can make markings using the above methods, and then use small pieces of plywood and a hacksaw. And in order to fasten everything, you can use self-tapping screws or even super glue. However, all this is more complicated and will take much longer, although it will provide the most accurate result (of course, if everything is done correctly).

However, if for any reason there is a situation that it is impossible to get the tool in the shortest possible time, you can use improvised tools such as a ruler, protractor or even tile, with the help of which it is easy to create a template with the necessary markup or even recreate the miter box at home
