Circular saws for panel saws: main saws, scoring saws for laminated chipboard, MDF, chipboard

Various equipment is used for straight cutting of plywood, wood-based panels (chipboard, laminated chipboard and MDF) and glued furniture board. First of all, these are format saws. The main tool for these machines. format circular saws. When cutting veneered (laminated) boards, complete with the main format saw, an undercut is also most often used.

Saws for cutting slabs in some cases noticeably differ in the shape of the gear ring from circular saws for sawing wood.

We offer a wide range of basic and scoring circular saws:

  • saws for cutting uncoated (“raw”) chipboard and MDF boards;
  • circular saws for laminated chipboard (main and scoring);
  • special saws for machines with an upper pressure beam (cutting packages of chipboard, laminated chipboard and MDF);
  • furniture board saws.

The choice of the type and design of circular saws for the panel saw depends on the properties of the material being processed, the design of the machine and the technological problems that it solves.

For example, in some cases, a fairly effective solution is the use of saws with a trapezoidal tooth shape. The wear of such teeth along the flank surfaces is significantly less than that of format saws with a flat back surface. This advantage is especially clearly manifested when cutting chipboard packages (wear on the side surfaces, which determines the total resource of the saw, is reduced by 2-3 times). Most often, trapezoidal teeth alternate with straight ones.

For the correct choice of a saw for cutting panels, we recommend that you contact our specialists.

To equip the saw teeth of panel saws, which you can find in our catalog, superhard alloys of the “S” and “T” types are used. These alloys are obtained by methods of modern powder metallurgy. Grades provide not only a longer tool life than conventional grades, but also a longer saw blade life.

For cutting laminated chipboard and MDF boards, machines equipped with an additional spindle are most often used, on which a scoring saw is installed.

Other types of scoring circular saws:

  • compound scoring saws;
  • solid (monolithic) scoring saws (including conical).

Adjustable split saws have two parts connected to each other and a mechanism for adjusting the cutting width. Both parts have the same number of teeth, usually 10-12. By changing the setting of the adjusting mechanism, the saw changes the cutting width, and it can be used for main sizing saws of different widths on panel saws that do not have the ability to adjust the scoring saw to the cutting height.

If possible, tapered scoring saws are used. The cutting depth of the tapered scoring saw depends on the cutting width of the main saw.

Hand saw

This hand tool is used in combination with a metal blade, as it has the smallest teeth. Before work, a sticky paper tape must be glued to the cut site, which protects the lamination layer from damage. The hand saw blade must be held at an angle of 30–35 °, this position reduces the likelihood of chipping on the material. The movements of the hacksaw blade should be smooth, without pressure on the blade.

After the cut is completed, the edges of the cut will need to be processed with a file and fine-grained emery paper.

Cutting rules

Laminated chipboard is made from waste from sawn hardwood and coniferous species, while the plate is lightweight and is used for the manufacture of furniture structures. Most home furniture makers prefer laminated particle board when choosing raw materials for furniture making. This material is relatively inexpensive, and in outlets there is always a wide variety of colors and textures to choose from. The difficulty in working with chipboard is that it is very difficult to saw off a part of the sheet of the required size due to the fact that the fragile laminated layer creates cracks and chips at the sawing site. Knowledge of some of the techniques used in work helps to cope with this task.

To cut laminated chipboard, you need to arm yourself with a fine-toothed saw.

over, the smaller and more often they are located on the tool blade, the cleaner and smoother the finished cut of the laminated material will be.

format, cutting, laminated, chipboard

For an accurate and high-quality performance of sawing work, it is necessary to act in a certain sequence.

  • On the chipboard sheet, it is necessary to outline the cutting line, where to glue the paper adhesive strip tightly. The tape will prevent the saw teeth from crushing the lamination layer during the sawing process.
  • With the help of an awl or a knife blade, a groove with a recess is made along the mowing line. Thus, we cut through a thin layer of lamination in advance, making it easier for ourselves when cutting. Moving along this groove, the saw blade will move along a tangent plane, while cutting deep layers of wood-shaving material.
  • When cutting, it is recommended to hold the saw blade at an acute angle relative to the working plane of the plate.
  • If the sawing work will be carried out using an electric tool, the feed speed of the cutting blade should be kept to a minimum so that the saw cannot vibrate or bend.
  • After sawing off, the cut of the workpiece must be processed first with a file, and then with sandpaper. The cut must be processed with movements from the center to the edge of the workpiece.

To protect the cut point on the workpiece from further chips or cracks, it is closed by applying melamine adhesive tape, or the end edges are fixed, which can have a T-shaped or C-shaped appearance.

After such decorative masking, not only the appearance of the slab is improved, but also the service life of the material is increased.

Electric jigsaw

In order to make an even cut without damaging the laminate layer, you will need to take a jigsaw file, in which the size of the teeth will be the smallest. It is advisable to use a jigsaw for cutting small-sized sections of chipboard. Jerks and excessive pressure during work should be avoided. The feed speed of the cutting blade at the tool should be selected as minimum.

This device is quite capable of making a smooth and high-quality cut without chipping the laminated surface.

The abbreviation chipboard should be understood as a laminated chipboard, which consists of natural wood waste mixed with a polymer adhesive composition, and has a lamination in the form of a monolithic film consisting of several layers of paper impregnated with resin. The lamination process is carried out under industrial conditions under a pressure of 28 MPa and at a high temperature regime, reaching 220 ° C. As a result of such processing, a very durable glossy coating is obtained, which can have various color shades and is highly resistant to mechanical damage and moisture.

Circular saw

This power tool consists of a small work table and a rotating toothed disc. A circular saw cuts a chipboard much faster and better than an electric jigsaw. During the sawing process, the saw is turned on at low speed. In this case, chips may appear on the opposite side of the saw teeth.

To prevent this situation, before starting the sawing, paper adhesive tape is glued to the cutting site.

Electric milling cutter

It is a hand-held type of power tool that is used to saw and drill wood-based panels. Before starting work in laminated chipboard, using a hand jigsaw, make a small cut, retreating from the marking contour by 3-4 mm. During the sawing process, several cutter blades and its bearing device are used, which regulates the cutting depth. Using a milling cutter is not so easy, so you need to have some skill with this tool to cut the slab. The movement of the cutter is quite fast, and there is a possibility of making an uneven cut.

But with the help of a cutter, you can get a perfectly smooth cut of the material. the appearance of chips and cracks when using this device is very rare.

The use of hand tools is advisable in the manufacture of single products from laminated chipboard. For mass production, it is advisable to purchase format-cutting equipment.

Materials and tools

In the conditions of a woodworking enterprise, special equipment is used to cut a sheet of chipboard, which is called a panel saw. Some private furniture workshops purchase such a machine, but it is hardly advisable to install it at home due to the high cost. Household power tools will be able to replace such equipment. sawing a chipboard can be done with a circular saw or a hacksaw. The sawing process will take quite a lot of time and effort, but from an economic point of view, it will be quite justified.

How to cut correctly?

It is quite possible to cut the chipboard without chips at home with your own hands. It greatly simplifies the task of preliminary creation of a groove with a sharp object in the area of the cut. Once in this place, the blade of the cutting tool follows a predetermined path and it turns out to cut much easier. Straight cuts on laminated chipboard are much easier to do than to cut a sheet figured.

It is extremely difficult to carry out curvilinear configurations using household appliances; this can be done only with the use of an electrophoresis. This tool performs a high-quality cut and has a lot of additional functions.

The price of an electromill depends on the manufacturer, so you can choose a budget model with good technical parameters.

To cut a sheet of laminated chipboard using an electromill, you must perform the following steps:

  • on the surface of an ordinary chipboard, all the contours of the future workpiece are marked;
  • using an electric jigsaw, the workpiece is cut out, retreating from the intended contour by 1–2 mm;
  • the finished sawn-off template is cleaned with a file or sandpaper;
  • a prepared stencil is placed on a sheet of laminated chipboard and fixed with carpentry clamps so that it is in a stationary position;
  • along the contour of the stencil, with an electromill cutter equipped with a bearing mechanism, cut out the contours of the workpiece, cutting off the edge exactly along the intended mowing line;
  • after completing the work, the end sides are cleaned and processed with a decorative edge.

The use of an electromill allows you to make a figured cut of chipboard without chips and cracking of the material.

Electromill knives must completely capture the entire thickness of the workpiece material. this is the only way to get a high-quality product.

You can learn about four ways to cut chipboard without chipping with a jigsaw from the video below.

Basic Rules

A feature of laminated chipboard is that the material has a hard protective coating, which is a multilayer film made of paper with resin, pressed under the action of high temperature and pressure. The thickness of the laminated layer of chipboard is small, but it reliably protects the material from moisture and mechanical damage. Sawing chipboard is a difficulty due to the fact that under the action of the cutting tool, the laminated layer cracks, thereby impairing the aesthetic appearance of the sheet. The width of the chips is small, but it is not always possible to eliminate them.

Cutting of laminated chipboard can be done using a jigsaw, circular saw or ordinary hand saw with fine fine teeth.

In order for the material to be cut accurately and efficiently, you must adhere to the following rules:

  • so that the saw teeth do not damage the laminated layer of material, adhesive mounting tape is glued to the saw line;
  • to facilitate the sawing process with a sharp knife blade, it is necessary to scratch the lamination layer until the chip layer is reached, while the direction of the blade should be tangential relative to the surface of the material;
  • during the sawing process, it is important to keep the saw blade at an acute angle of 30 degrees relative to the surface of the workpiece;
  • when using a power tool, work is performed at low speeds;
  • on the finished part, it is necessary to cut a thin layer of the laminated part at an angle of 45 °;
  • after cutting, the edge of the workpiece is filed in the direction from the periphery to the middle;
  • after the edge of the cut has been filed, it is closed with a self-adhesive melamine patch strip, or it can be a C or T edging.

Laminated chipboard (chipboard) is today the main material for the mass production of furniture. This woodworking product is used not only in furniture factories, but also used by home craftsmen.

For the manufacture of furniture, laminated chipboard sheets must be cut in such a way that the material is not covered with a network of cracks or chips. Such cutting can be performed using special industrial equipment or ordinary household tools. Performing work requires certain skills and experience.

What you may need?

At furniture factories, laminated chipboard is cut using special equipment. usually a CNC machine, on the table of which a sheet of material is laid. The circular saw of such a machine makes a clean cut without chips. Format cutting of workpieces occurs in mass quantities, and in addition to sawing in the production process, additional devices and materials are used to process furniture parts. Most trading companies provide services to the population for sawing purchased furniture boards, but some craftsmen prefer to do this work on their own. Sawing chipboard material with your own hands at home is much more difficult. A hand file will require caution from the master and the presence of a certain tool.

It is most convenient to cut the laminated chipboard with a router or jigsaw. Cutting is most efficient with a circular saw, but choosing the right blade for a clean cut is difficult.

In addition, to work on the processing of chipboard, a special working table with leading edges will be required.

When performing work with an ordinary jigsaw, in the absence of experience in working on the material, chips are often formed, since with the help of this tool it is quite problematic to make a perfect cut. The sawing process can be made easier by attaching a bimetallic laminate saw blade to the jigsaw, the teeth of which are sharpened in the inner direction. Work with a jigsaw is performed at low speeds of the saw blade feed, they do this so that cracks do not appear on the laminated surface when working.

Another way to cut a laminated chipboard sheet is to use a hacksaw blade. For work, a hacksaw for metal is suitable, which has very small teeth. For work, the blade will have to be prepared, that is, the teeth must be diluted by 0.5 along the blade thickness. The blade itself must be made of hardened steel grade. Not all power tools are suitable for working with laminated material. This furniture board cannot be cut properly with an angle grinder called an angle grinder. The speed of rotation of the disk of this tool is very high and chips on chipboard will be inevitable, especially if you use a circular disk with a large diameter for work.

What can not be sawed

Chipboard cannot be cut with an angle grinder, which is also called an “angle grinder”. When working with this tool, there is a high probability of injury, especially when using large diameter discs. You can also get injured when the protective cover is removed from the tool.

Sawing rules

First you need to choose the sawing method.

Be sure to carry out the following preparation (cutting):

  • to protect the laminated coating of the slab from damage during operation, it is necessary to prepare masking tape or scotch tape;
  • for marking blanks. a ruler and a pencil;
  • mark the future cutting points with a pencil from the ends of the slab;
  • in order to prevent chips from appearing, you need to stick masking tape or scotch tape on the cutting site;
  • after gluing the tape, connect the preliminary marking points with a pencil;
  • prepare sandpaper for finishing cut lines.

The following rule no longer applies to preparation, but to actions after cutting, but is common with any method: if irregularities are found on the edges, then they need to be processed with a file or rasp. Cover the ends resulting from sawing with a veneer with a pattern similar to that of a laminated coating.

Jigsaw

Suitable for cutting a small area. The saw should be with the smallest tooth size. You need to move the jigsaw smoothly, without pressure, set the speed slightly above average.

On the side where the teeth enter the plate, there will be practically no chips, and on the opposite side, with insufficient experience, they will appear, but in a small amount.

Correct sawing of chipboard: sawing chipboard without chips, do-it-yourself machine

Particleboard (chipboard), and nowadays, mainly laminated (chipboard), is one of the main materials for making affordable furniture in a home workshop. This board is made of coniferous and deciduous wood materials, therefore it has such qualities as strength and ease of processing. But with an incorrect cut, this material may chip. Therefore, before making furniture, you should find out how to properly cut chipboard.

For this purpose, you can even assemble industrial equipment yourself. a cutting machine.

Required tools and materials

The saw unit of the machine is most often a welded structure, as it most effectively resists vibration.

  • welding machine;
  • “Angle grinder” with a disc for metal;
  • electric drill;
  • measuring tool.

In order for the equipment to work for several years, it is better to choose those materials for its manufacture that have been subjected to heat treatment.

  • square or round pipes;
  • a beam or two pipes of circular cross-section, interconnected;
  • rollers;
  • steel sheet with a thickness of at least three millimeters;
  • chipboard sheet;
  • linkage of any configuration.

How to make a machine with your own hands

When using a panel saw, you can get high quality furniture parts. This is due to the high precision of the production process, including cutting. Therefore, if it is difficult to purchase ready-made equipment, but you really want to start a chipboard processing business, you can assemble the machine yourself.

A circular saw

You will need a fine-toothed saw blade. With this method, long, straight cuts will be more successful than with a jigsaw. There will be no chipping on the side where the teeth cut into the plate. If they appear, then from the opposite side, as in the case of a jigsaw.

The use of guides increases the accuracy of the cut. At the same time, it is better to fix the saw on the table.
