Good Punch For Professional Jobs

A rotary hammer is one of the most popular tools for repairs in a house or apartment. With it, holes are prepared for dowels, concrete is cut to install outlets, the walls are chipped during wiring, removal of old plaster and so on. Before choosing a hammer for home or professional use, you need to understand what varieties they are, to study the main characteristics of the tool.

Punch purpose

A rotary hammer is a manual tool for punching or drilling holes. It consists of 2 main parts. it is an electric motor and a shock head (it can be pneumatic and mechanical). Do not confuse the hammer drill and hammer drill. The main difference of the drill is that it simulates a blow due to gear nuts built into the head, but the main effort is made by the operator holding the tool (punching of concrete is achieved by rotating the drill). In the puncher, the impact is generated by transferring force to the impact edge, while the operator simply holds the tool without much pressure on it (punching of concrete is achieved precisely because of the impact, not the rotation of the drill).

Punching concrete is achieved by impact, not rotation of the drill

The main functions of the punch are as follows:

  • drilling and punching of concrete, other stone or mineral rocks (tiles, tiles, marble, granite, and so on);
  • shredding of concrete;
  • cutting holes in concrete (for the installation of socket boxes, ventilation systems).

Main varieties

According to the type of shock generation, perforators are divided into:

The latter are more productive, able to generate a more powerful beat for each beat, but they weigh significantly more and have a more complex structure that increases the cost. Electromechanical ones are simpler, for domestic use they are in most cases more than enough.

According to the operating mode, perforators are classified into:

The former, as a rule, only know how to drill, while the operator can either enable or disable impacts. In 3-mode, it is possible to fix the position of the drill and turn on only strokes.

If you fix the drill in shock mode, it will move back and forth without rotation

By weight, perforators are classified into:

  • light (household, assembly weight of the instrument up to 4 kilograms);
  • medium (semi-professional, assembly weight up to 8 kilograms);
  • heavy (professional, used for chiselling hard rocks, the mass of the tool is more than 10 kilograms).

It should be noted that the classification for "household. professional" is used only by manufacturers. But the key difference between them is not in the weight of the tool itself, but in the permissible operating mode. The household rotary hammer is not designed for continuous use without interruption, as it may overheat. In professional ones, more powerful cooling is used (both the engine and the shock head), which allows working for a long time without interruption.

In a separate category, cordless rotary hammers can be distinguished. They are more mobile, they can do without an electric network, but their performance in most cases leaves much to be desired.

Some manufacturers, such as Bosch, Hilti, Makita, offer cordless rotary hammers with stationary productivity, but they are quite expensive, and one full charge lasts 20–45 minutes of battery life.

What parameters to choose

When choosing a punch, you should pay attention to:

  • device class (household, professional);
  • power;
  • number of operating modes;
  • cost;
  • brand and its reputation.

As for the class of the device, it is not recommended to buy heavy perforators for domestic use. their functionality will be redundant, but the cost is almost 3-4 times higher. The ideal option for the home is semi-professional models.

Power

The power of the hammer drill is indicated in watts (consumed electricity level) and kilojoules (indicates the force with which the impact is carried out while drilling). Pay attention only to the second indicator. Power in watts does not have practical value, since only the number of revolutions of the drill at the maximum performance mode depends on this indicator. But drilling is not due to this, but due to impacts. A more important parameter is precisely the impact force in kilojoules.

The higher the impact force, the lower the number of revolutions of the cartridge head

Number of operating modes

For domestic use, 2-mode punchers in most cases are enough. But if it is chosen for gating walls, then you will definitely need to purchase a 3-mode model in which you can turn off the rotation of the cartridge and drill only with a blow.

The brand

From a good side, both in domestic and professional applications, perforators of the following manufacturers have shown themselves:

  • Bosch;
  • Makita;
  • Hilti;
  • DeWalt;
  • Hitachi;
  • Yato
  • AEG;
  • Metabo.

They cost a lot, but the percentage of warranty claims on them is minimal (at the same time, the manufacturer gives a guarantee for a period of up to 36 months).

The brands that produce punchers of acceptable quality are as follows:

Cost

The cost directly depends on the class of the puncher, its power and reliability. Experts recommend not considering models, cheaper than 3,500 rubles (for this amount it is better to purchase a quality impact drill). But professional models on average cost from 15 thousand rubles and above.

How to choose a high-quality and inexpensive model: expert advice

Devices with a shock frequency of more than 10 thousand per minute will be needed only for crushing hard rock

Pay attention to the impact force indicator. The optimal value is about 7 kilojoules. In models where the impact is more than 10 kilojoules, the impact mechanism itself wears out quite quickly, even if it consists of refractory alloys. And for home use, there is no need for such models.

Do not choose a hammer drill with impact force in the region of 1-2 kilojoules. It allows only low quality concrete to be drilled (M80. M200). They won’t be able to ditch the walls, and a quality impact drill is better for drilling.

Impact rate is also an important parameter. It is recommended to choose models with indicators from 5500 to 10 thousand beats per minute.

Drill Selection

At the moment, 2 main types of drill attachment are used in perforators:

  • SDS Plus (found on almost all household models, diameter up to 3 cm);
  • SDS Max (found in professional and some semi-professional rotary hammers, diameter up to 5.2 cm).

It is by this parameter that the drill is selected, that is, by fastening.

Bosch recently introduced the new SDS Top drill mount format, but it hasn’t received much distribution. And the principle of the cartridge structure there is practically no different from the standard and widespread SDS Max.

Owner reviews

The BOSCH GBH 2–26 DFR rotary hammer has proved to be excellent for a year and a half of operation (building a cottage). Hollowed out old concrete (track), broke the terrace, knocked out concrete baths, the tool did not fail. Although there are some nuances, you need to remember that this is a professional device, but not a jackhammer. He needs to be given a rest, and with intensive chiselling, the SDS-plus cartridge wears out, which is decent (I recommend using grease for the drill).

The Makita HR 2450 tool worked all repairs with a bang. It is important to use high-quality consumables. drills, peaks, etc. The power of the drill motor, and it is 780 watts, is enough for most jobs. Despite the fact that the maximum drill diameter is 13 mm, I used consumables of a larger diameter as well, having previously drilled a hole with a thin drill, if necessary. Many do not like it, but it seemed to me a very convenient arrangement of the reverse lever directly above the power button. You can very quickly use your thumb or forefinger to change the direction of rotation of the drill if it sticks.

I bought a model Bort BHD-800N-K. I was satisfied with the puncher, managed to work in the apartment, drills concrete easily. It is also assembled decently, but the material has a bit of a flake, the surface of the gearbox with the electrics case does not exactly coincide. Buttons and switches work well. Brushes change easily. I did not really like the case, in terms of loops and locks. It is good that the kit has at least some kind of equipment, it withstood normal drilling of a concrete wall.

In total, it is easy enough to choose a puncher if you understand their varieties and technical parameters. Many are advised to give preference to an instrument from Bosch or Makita. they even produce special household models with a price of 4.5 thousand rubles. In most cases, this is a really good choice. It’s better not to consider a very cheap tool at all. its performance and reliability leave much to be desired. In this case, it is better to purchase a proven impact drill (from the same Bosch).
