Grinding table with hood with your own hands

Making a simple sanding table with dust extraction

As you know, such an important process as grinding, is accompanied by the formation of large amounts of fine dust. Some of the electric grinders are equipped with a dust extraction system, but it is not able to remove the cloud of dust that forms around the workpiece.Of course, a powerful hood and air filtration system in the workshop will be good helpers, but they take up space and require a financial investment.

In this article, the author of the YouTube channel “JSK-koubou” will tell you how to make a small table for grinding with a dust extraction system.

This project is very simple to make, and easily replicated in a small carpentry shop.

Materials. necessary for self-made.- Sheet plywood, laminated particle board, fiberboard, wood block- Double sided tape, carpenter’s glue, second glue.

Tools. used by the author.- Hand-held circular saw-electric screwdriver- Set of wood and metal bits-Forstner bits- Multifunctional drill guide- Hand-held router- Wood routers- Thrust bearing routers- Industrial vacuum cleaner- Marking tape measure- F-screws- Band clamps- Digital angle, pencil.

Manufacturing Process. So, the first thing to do is to determine the sufficient size of the working area. First of all, it depends not so much on the size of the parts to be processed, but rather on the power of the available Vacuum cleaner. So too big a sanding table should not be made.

As the material for the walls of the box and its bottom, the master chose a sheet plywood 14 mm thick.Wall strips are cut with the handheld circular saw and its guide. The latter is fixed together with the sheet to be worked on the workbench. To prevent the saw blade from damaging the surface of the table top, the author places a styrofoam sheet under the workpiece.

Cutting to length is performed on a home-made vertical sawing machine.

Now you need to make a quartering on the perimeter of the wall parts. Along the bottom wide side, and on the edges, the width of the quarters is equal to the thickness of the plywood. On the upper side, a wider, 18mm thick strip is removed to match the thickness of the cover.

The middle point of one of the short side walls is marked out and a hole is drilled for the hose as close to the top of it as possible. The hole is drilled with the Forstner bit, although you can also use a crown saw.

Next, using digital angle bar, The craftsman marks two mowing lines at an angle of 25 degrees to the wide edge. This marking is carried out on the inside of both short walls.

Along the marked lines, wooden slats are glued. They will serve as supports for the inner partitions.

Given the thickness of the bar from which the beams for the countertop will be made, the author glues two more small bars to the sides.

Now you can glue the side walls together, placing them “upside down”.

Lastly, the bottom is glued, and the box is tightened with a band clamp. With the great length of the side walls, a couple or three more ordinary clamps won’t hurt. they will prevent the walls from bending outward.

After the glue dries, the seams are cleaned, and the main part of the box is ready.

Two baffles, made of fiberboard, are glued to the inclined supports. No gaps should be left between the dividers and the body.

The third partition has the shape of an isosceles triangle with a cut off apex. This piece will be glued against the wall with the hole.

In order to be able to install the support beams, you need to make two slots in this part for them.

Of course, you can also do it with an ordinary jigsaw or hacksaw.The author decided to go the other way, and use a milling machine. On the perimeter of the marking on the double sided adhesive tape the bars are fastened.

On the milling machine is installed cutter with a thrust bearing. Excess material is thus quickly and neatly removed.

If double sided tape If the levers are of good quality, they can be glued over and a second slit made.

After placing the partition in its place, the joints are glued with a second glue.

Now you need to cut two beams from plywood, and glue them to the supports.

The last and most time-consuming operation is to drill lots of holes in the worktop. This is where it’s best to use an electric screwdriver with a multifunctional guide.The diameter of the holes should be small, in the range from 2 to 4 mm, it depends on their number and power of the vacuum cleaner.The finished tabletop with holes is glued in place.

The project is completed, and it can be used together with a household vacuum cleaner and an additional cyclone filter. Also perfectly suited for industrial vacuum cleaners.Fine dust particles are not blown around, but are immediately sucked out through the openings.

Large particles can be swept away with your hand while keeping the vacuum cleaner running, they will be sucked in as well.

Thanks to the author for the simple design of the grinding table.

Making a surface grinding machine with my own hands

The surface grinding machine, which you can make with your own hands, is a very popular equipment not only in manufacturing enterprises, but also in the home workshop. Such a device is practically indispensable in situations where you need to perform grinding and fitting of metal parts. Of course, such work can be done manually, but it will take a lot of effort, time and will not achieve a high accuracy of treatment.

Machining of the workpiece on an industrial surface grinding machine

To think about equipping his home workshop flat grinder machine makes sense in the event that you often have to work on metal. In this case, you can choose one of two options: buy serial equipment or make such a machine with your own hands. Buying a serial machine is associated with serious financial costs, which is not always appropriate for its use in the home workshop.

  • electric motor from a washing machine: power. 600 watts with a capacitor, with a frequency of rotation of the shaft. 1600 rpm;
  • four sheets of plywood with dimensions of 400×400 mm and a thickness of 19 mm;
  • A pair of 300×300 mm thick plywood sheets
  • angle grinder (angle grinder) with 80-100 grit emery wheel;
  • pencil, ruler, and compass;
  • scissors for cutting sheet metal;
  • Drill or electric screwdriver with metal drill bits and self-tapping bit;
  • Manual wood milling machine, preferably built into the table;
  • straight groove cutter;
  • emery cloth;
  • wooden or rubber mallet
  • wood glue and screw clamps;
  • circular saw.

General purpose and types of machines

The machine tool is designed for final treatment of details and workpieces made of various materials by impacting them with a surface with an abrasive or diamond coating. The machine and its appliances and mechanisms make it possible to maintain dimensional and shape accuracy and to create a perfect surface of a part or a workpiece.

With the machine you can process flat parts, surfaces inside and outside, details of different geometric shapes, grind or polish threads and gear teeth. According to their characteristics, grinders are divided into:

  • Internal cylindrical grinding.
  • Internal grinding.
  • Centerless grinding.
  • Surface grinding.
  • Special machines (for grinding threads, gears).

Grinding process

Grinding is the process of removing the top layer from the surface of the workpiece by using abrasives or diamond grit. They are combined on the work surface and bonded together with a bonding agent. They form a grinding wheel or belt.

During operation, the abrasive surface is given a circular motion by an electric motor. The surface of the workpiece is brought into contact with the abrasive and is used in the grinding process to grind the workpiece. There is a popular belief that grinding with abrasives is friction grinding. However, this is incorrect.

Each abrasive particle has a sharp edge and when it comes into contact with materials (metal, plastic, wood, stone) it works like a cutting tool and removes chips, like a mill or a drill. If we consider a considerable speed of rotation of grinding wheels, as well as the emergence of shavings as a product of grinding, it is necessary to consider the possibility of injury to this very shavings.

Design and operating principle of grinding tables

The grinding table is designed so as to create a downward flow of air in the area of the work surface, which facilitates efficient removal of dust produced while grinding the workpiece.

On a multi-sectional grinding table, all sections are mounted in a row, right next to each other, so that the ventilation ducts of the individual sections are combined into one larger duct. The right end of this channel is closed with a stopper, the left end is closed with a stopper. is connected to the suction opening of the ventilation unit. Due to the rarefaction in the internal channel of the section created by the block fan, the contaminated air is sucked through the perforated working surface of the table and active fencing into the internal cavity of the section body, passes through a replaceable frame filter, enters into a single ventilation channel and further into the ventilation unit. The air is discharged from the ventilation unit through the exhaust stack back into the workshop space.

The single-section grinding table has an integrated fan whose suction opening exits directly into the section ventilation duct. As a result both ends of the inner ventilation duct of a table section are closed by blanking plugs. Under the action of rarefaction created by the built-in fan contaminated air is sucked through the peorized table working surface and active enclosure into the inner cavity of the section, passes through the changeable frame filter, enters the fan and then through the hole in the rear wall of the section is discharged back into the room of the workshop.

Contaminated air is filtered by replaceable filters located in work table sections. Depending on the required quality of air purification, filters of different purification classes can be used. The most common are the FT-250 pre-filters of purification class EU3. EU3. which have a sufficient retention capacity and dust holding capacity.

The use of rigid frames and laminated side cladding of grinding tables and a ventilation unit, allows achieving a low level of noise in the workplace, which reduces worker fatigue and increases productivity. However, when grinding tables are installed in small rooms, due to the influence of reflected sound waves and noise from other operating equipment, the overall noise level in the room may exceed the permissible limits. In such cases, it is advisable to use an integrated sound attenuator, which reduces the noise level of the ventilation unit by 15-20 dB. A sound attenuator can be installed when ordering the grinding table, as well as in the process of operation. Single sectional grinding table, due to the special design of the built-in fan, does not require a sound attenuator, as it meets the requirements of sanitary standards for noise level at the workplace.

The workplace of the grinder, in order to achieve high quality of grinding, requires a sufficiently high level of illumination, which is not always possible using only general lighting in the room. On delivery the grinding table can be equipped with a 2-lamp fluorescent lamp in a dustproof and waterproof version, which ensures sufficient and uniform illumination of the entire surface of the working table and the workpiece. The luminaires can be installed both on the work surface of the grinding table (with extended brackets) and on the active or passive back fence (with shortened brackets). Luminaires have detachable hermetically sealed electrical connections with locks and height adjustment. Each light has its own switch. The light fixtures are supplied with electrical wiring with connectors and holders.

On the control panel there is a fan circuit breaker with thermal protection, fuses of lights and sockets, as well as, with certain equipment. start button for the pneumatic filter cleaning system. Connection of the sanding table to the power supply line is made with a 4-pin power connector, which is included in the delivery set.

The design of grinding tables allows you to add optional units during operation without any preparatory work. This makes it possible to select the right equipment configuration to suit the processing of specific workpieces.

Wood sanding machine: how to make it with your own hands?

Wood sanding is a mandatory procedure that precedes finishing. Special machines are used for the job, which operate on different principles and grind the material in different directions. However, the price of such devices is quite high. For the home handyman is not always advisable to buy equipment that will be used occasionally. It is more correct to make a wood sanding machine with your own hands, which will cost much cheaper and allow you to get quite an effective device.
