When a dog appears in the house, the question of shelter immediately arises: somewhere it must sleep and hide from the rain. Not everyone wants and can keep them in the house, because the kennel is required. The dog house is built with its own hands, even without skills, in one day. There is nothing difficult, but there are features.
When building a booth you need to focus on the size of the dog
We determine the size and design
The right dog house is built for a reason: you need to know what size it is needed, where and what size to make a hole, what is better to make and how to warm.
First of all, first of all, they are determined with the size of a dog kennel. The easiest way to focus on the dimensions of your dog. The dog’s hut should be 5–6 cm taller than a pet in height, approximately equal in width / depth to body length, plus 10–20 cm in length in order to be able to extend its paws. In general, dog handlers have recommendations on the size of dog kennels. They recommend making booths depending on the size of the breed. The data are presented in the table (width / length / height of the dog shed are in centimeters):
If your pet does not exceed the average size of its breed, you should not increase the booth: it will be difficult to warm it in the winter. Please note that these are internal dimensions; if the plating is planned, the dimensions increase by the wall thickness.
Sizing dog kennels
What is the width of the hole
There are recommendations on the width of the manhole. It is determined depending on the width of the chest of the dog. Measure, add 5 cm, get the width of the manhole. The height depends on the height of the withers: you also add 5 cm to the measured value. For a puppy, the manhole is made small at first – a little more than required, as it grows it is increased.
Laz in a dog house is located not in the center, but closer to one of the walls. With this structure, the dog will be able to hide from precipitation or wind behind a solid wall, curled up in a protected part. Often they propose to divide the booth by a partition, making a kind of “vestibule” and sleeping area. But hiding in the fenced compartment, the dog can not control what is happening in the entrusted territory. Many bona fide watchmen do not like to go there. Some, even in the most severe frosts, lie opposite the entrance, not wanting to leave the post. So, the version with offset hole presented in the photo is optimal.
One more thing: at the entrance to the dog house there should be a span of 10-15 cm in height. It protects the dog lying in front of the entrance from wind and precipitation, prevents snow and rain from getting inside.
The roof is better to make a folding
The roof in the dog box can be single or double gable. Shed, preferable: not very large animals like to sit / lie on it. So they can control a large area.
Another point: since there is no heating in the booth, in winter the air in it is heated from the heat generated by the body. The greater the volume, the longer the kennel will bask. The gable roof on the doghouse just greatly increases this volume without bringing any other good. If you want your dog to be good, make a lean-to roof.
If you don’t like it at all in terms of aesthetics, make a ceiling and the roof itself above. Moreover, it is desirable to make it removable or folding – on the hinges. So it will be more convenient to carry out periodic cleaning and disinfection: organic residues clog in the gap, in which fleas breed. Here from them also it is necessary to process the kennel from time to time.
The dog box must have a floor raised above the ground. To do this, make legs with a height of at least a few centimeters or knock down the frame, which is laid directly on the floor boards.
In general, if possible, dogs prefer to spend time outside. Because it would be nice to do in front of a dog house or on the side of her canopy. And in order to have the opportunity to sit / lie under it – to make the flooring.
I see everything, I hear everything))
This booth does not have a folding roof, but a front wall, which is also convenient when processing.
What to build and how to warm
Most often the dog box is made of wood or wood-based materials. Wood is preferable – it keeps cool in summer and warm in winter. In it, the dog will quite comfortably carry the winter, if the boards are fitted tightly, there are no cracks, even a single wall wooden booth is warm. To, by the way, the dog box turned out without cracks, use a cut board, sometimes even grooved.
Concrete and brick kiosks are not the best choice: they have a good heat, in the summer they are too hot, in the winter – very cold. That is why dogs often prefer to sleep in the open, rather than in a brick kennel.
If wood is too expensive, use a frame for the frame, and everything else can be made of OSB, DVP, plywood. If you use wood sheet material, you may need two layers of it: it is still much thinner than wood and, due to the presence of the binder, has better thermal conductivity (it retains heat worse). Therefore, in this case, you can think about the insulation of the booth for the winter.
Doghouse made of plywood: an example of warming
It is possible to warm any suitable material. You can use the remnants of the construction of houses, villas, baths. It may be mineral wool (as pictured), foam or other material. Warm up with foam plastic, do not overdo it: it does not let air through, and if you hang a curtain on a manhole, the dog will stop sitting in the booth: there will not be enough air for it. Because or leave a small gap or provide some kind of air intake channel.
If we are to insulate, then the floor and the roof too. They are also made double, laying the same insulation. Too large layer of insulation should not be done: the dog itself can warm up well, besides it has a decent fur coat. And for her worse – frequent sudden changes in temperature than constant cold. If you want the dog to be warm, fill the kennel with a straw for the winter: it should be trampled where necessary, the excess should be thrown away. It is necessary to change such a litter twice during the winter.
For the winter, a dense fabric is cut over a manhole, cut into fairly thick strips. Two chopped noodles of the cloth is fixed with a shear incision. This is how it turns out that the wind does not blow the dog’s box, and the entrance / exit is free. But some dogs do not immediately get used to this innovation and sometimes refuse to go inside.
Outside the booth can be painted, from the inside – no. The canopy and the wall from the wind (preferably one deaf) is treated with antiseptics. It makes no sense to paint them. The main thing is to make the roof without gaps, so that it does not bleed inside or blow out.
A canopy for firewood or a wood grabber is easy to do by hand. How to read here.
Insulated dog house with their own hands
If we talk about the drawings, but no "frills" animals are not needed and too large sizes, too. For them, this is a hole, and it is large, by definition, it cannot be, and it is difficult to heat excess volumes in winter. The booth was made with two windproof walls and a small canopy.
Ready dog box
First, they made two pallets in size with supports for four square bars, then they were connected to each other. The result was a podium on which the floorboards were fixed. The legs in the design are desirable – the floor will not get wet.
Ready floor for the box
In the corners secured bars. At the junction there were six pieces: four on the kennel itself, two in front for the windproof walls. First, they made the inner lining, to which they fixed 7 cm of penoplex, then sheathed the outside. To prevent water from flowing into the walls between the boards, the gap from above is closed with a strip of suitable width.
Walls in a booth with insulation
When facing the wall to which the windproof wall adjoins, the boards used whole ones – so the construction is more rigid.
Laz and insulated removable roof
The longest were fiddling with the roof. I didn’t want to make it completely flat, because we made a warmed shield strictly sized, which was attached to a slightly rounded roof of stacked rails. It even turned out without a slope, but due to the sloping shape, water flows without problems. Since it was still impossible to hermetically make it, a film was placed under the slats.
Bar from a bar for alabay from a bar
We will immediately say that the dog house was built from materials left over from the construction of the bathhouse. Also, it will put next, because in appearance it should resemble the bath itself.
The basis of this dog box lay down drawing with the size of the box for alabay. But since the dog is not alabai, the sizes have become more modest. Adjustments were also made to the design: a window was made in the side wall, and a cleaning door in the back.
A doghouse for a large dog
At first they built and painted the platform – from the remnants of logs, which were scolded and churned. Then the assembly of the dog house itself began. First, in the workshop they planed, sawed and carried out the ready-made construction and installed it in place – near the bath.
The first crown was laid whole. It forms the threshold and serves as a support for the whole structure. Then cut timber according to the scheme. Considering that the work experience was already (bath built), the work proceeded quickly.
The first two crowns are folded.
Since it was supposed to make the roof "house", as in a bath next to the dog was warm, made the ceiling. A sheet of plywood was used for it. A bar was made in the bar, on which a sheet of thick plywood cut to size was laid. Then they assembled and installed roof shields.
The ceiling in the doghouse
They were not collected according to the rules – they did not make the rafter system. Since the roof is decorative, they assembled the shields, trimmed them with the remains of soft tiles (they also remained from the construction of the bath), then they were joined and sheathed the gables.
Roof did not by the rules
Then the boards sheathed gables. The gaps were covered with boards. The dog box is ready. Made your own hands for half a day.
We do not quite Alabai and not Caucasian, but also not a very small dog
Such a structure for a dog of this size will still be large. This box is designed for larger dogs. The situation can be saved only installed inside the partition, reducing the width.
Another dog house with its own hands is made of OSB, covered with professional sheet (insulation and inner lining are planned). The assembly process is captured on video.
Almost everyone in childhood wanted to have a dog, but to keep a dog in apartments is not very convenient.
It is much better to start a pet in a country house, where you can have not only a small, but also a large dog.
A dog in a country house will play the role of not only a friend, but also a watchdog, and the best care for her will be to build a booth for him with his own hands.
What to look for when choosing a place.
The place of the dog kennel has a careful approach to the choice:
- watch the wind, do not put a kennel so that the wind blows constantly into it
- choose a lighter place for him, but not so bright either, so that in the summer heat the dog could take refuge there
- put a dog house on an elevated place, otherwise in the spring the dog will spend the night on wet ground
- leave the booth not far from the entrance to the house
- calculate so that the dog from his kennel saw the front door to the courtyard, so he can better guard the neighborhood
Phased construction of a pet booth
It should be noted that during the construction of the booth there is no need to make it winter, as the house itself will consist of a vestibule – where it is enough and comfortable for a dog in winter, as well as a sleeping place.
Required materials for construction
Coniferous wood is used for construction, since air circulates better through it, which means that the dog will have the necessary temperature for the dog. Only before starting work it is necessary to sand it, otherwise the pet may get hurt or make a splinter.
During construction, you will most likely need tools such as sand, nails, wall paneling, plywood, tiles, polyethylene and bars, boards, slats, foam plastic or cotton wool.
From the inside of the kennel, you shouldn’t handle anything, as the dog has an excellent and sensitive scent, and various smells can be irritants for him.
The size of the kennel
Sizes must be selected based on the height of the dog. In her house, standing, without raising her head, she should fit well, and if in a lying position, the dog should fit well in a kennel with a fully raised head.
The width should be such that the dog, lying sideways, legs fully fit in the kennel in the extended position.
The height of the hole in the kennel must be less than five centimeters in height.
The assembly process itself
If you already have everything at hand, then building a house for your pet will not be difficult.
Assembling the bottom and frame, use the bars and planks. Boards need to be assembled close to each other, so as not to blow and not let the wind through. As a rule, bars are fastened at the corners, because the whole structure will be fastened on them.
As for the walls, then it is sheathed with clapboard, as it will serve more than its own similar building materials. They need to be fastened with carnations, on the tip of which there are caps, since it is safe for the dog.
Plywood is used as a ceiling, later it is necessary to warm it with wool or foam. After the work done, put another layer of plywood on top. If after plywood, nothing lays down, then all tiled.
The passage, as a rule, it is round, is covered with a curtain. This is so that the wind gets into the kennel minimally.
How to care for a dog kennel
In the kennel it is necessary to carry out constant cleaning about once a month. To disinfect the kennel in the summer is boring almost every month, and in the winter and in the cold time, this can be desired once in two three months, and this will be more than enough.
If you treat with any solution, then do not let the dog come in until the smell completely leaves the doghouse.
The dog is not only a friend of man, but also a full member of the family. Of course, in the conditions of a city apartment it is not always possible to have a shaggy pet. But if you live in a private house, then most often you have a dog that performs the role of the watchman and a friend.
In this case, be sure to provide your beloved dog with housing – comfortable, practical and warm.
Today you will learn how to make a kennel, in which the dog will feel cozy and comfortable in any weather.
Today we will consider all the nuances of construction and equipment of the dog house with our own hands, from preparation for work to installation of the roof.
Determine the size of the dog house and its location
First select the place where the booth will be located. This is a kind of guard post, and the location must comply with certain rules:
- when installing the structure, take into account the wind direction, since the booth should not be purged;
- the place should be well lit, but located near the shaded area where the dog will rest from the heat;
- Avoid moisture that may accumulate under the kennel, set the kennel on high ground in a dry place;
- the kennel should be close enough to the front door of the house, optimally on the south side;
- From the side of the booth, the gate, entrance gate and most of the site should be clearly visible.
The last point is justified by the fact that the dog by its nature requires a maximum view of the space, which allows it to detect danger and provide protection.
We now turn to the next task. Whatever the shape of the dog house, the dimensions should be calculated optimally for the pet. Therefore, the basis for the calculations are taken indicators of the size of the dog with allowances.
Traditionally used for the construction of the booth dimensions:
- A doghouse for a small dog (for example, a dachshund) – 700 mm length, 550 mm width, 600 mm height;
- The box for an average dog (husky, german shepherd) – 1200 mm length, 750 mm width, 800 mm height;
- The booth for a large dog (Alabai, Caucasian Shepherd Dog) is 1400 mm long, 1000 mm wide, 950 mm high.
Since the size of the dog, even within the same breed can vary, the size of the kennel can be customized.
And in order to determine them optimally, use this technique in the calculations. To determine the width of the manhole, measure the width of the dog’s chest, and add 5-8 cm to the value obtained. The height of the manhole should be 5 cm below the dog at the withers, and the height of the whole booth should be 5 cm higher. The depth of the booth should be the same as in height.
Drawing for the booth with their own hands
So, having decided on the size of the booth and the additional conditions for its installation, proceed to the exact image on paper.
To make a good, reliable box with your own hands, you need to make a drawing correctly, taking into account not only the dimensions of the dog, but also its peculiarities of character and even the climate.
Take into account such additions that will make the kennel a good and convenient protective structure:
- There should be enough space inside the booth so that the dog can get up, turn around or lie down, stretched out. The same goes for the entrance hole. That is, in the calculations do not forget to add a few centimeters to the growth, especially if the dog is still a puppy and will continue to grow.
- Use for the construction of the booth only natural, environmental materials. The best solution is wood: cheap, affordable and not harmful to your pet’s health.
- If you live in a cooler climate, take care that your dog is not cold in winter. Be sure to warm the booth, and if possible apply additional measures. For example, a booth could be a two-room apartment. The booth’s width will increase about 2 times, while the manhole to the first room, or vestibule, is located from the courtyard, and the manhole to the second room will be made in the inner wall closer to the back surface of the booth.
- You can also build a booth inside the enclosure. This option is well suited for large dogs, not accustomed to sit on the chain. Thus, the pet will not lose the freedom of movement, and the booth will be provided with additional heat preservation. If you live in the southern, warmer regions, it is better to make a booth more than its size: the dog will need more coolness than heat.
- Decide which roof you want for the booth. On the sloping roof, the dog will be able to rest comfortably, and under the gable you can equip a small attic for toys.
Taking into account all the nuances, make an accurate drawing of your structure. It will also help you calculate the amount of materials needed.
Materials you need
Before you build a dog house, equip yourself with all the necessary tools and prepare the materials. So, in addition to the finished drawing you need:
- Building level;
- Antiseptic for wood impregnation;
The optimal choice of material for the body of the booth is a tree, mostly coniferous.
Such wood breathes well, retains heat, is easy to process and is durable in use. Use the same lining. The floorboard, sheets of plywood, bars, and for decoration – decorative slats and corners.
If you need to build a warmed dog booth, take care of its impermeability and impermeability as well. For all this you will need:
- Mineral wool (it can be replaced with foam);
Be sure to clean the wall panel, which is used in the construction of the booth, otherwise the pet may get hurt or shuffle. Do not treat the structure from the inside with chemical or substances or substances with a strong odor, such as paint, antiseptic, drying oil: dogs have a very delicate scent, and this can damage the health and health of the dog.
How to build a dog booth: start the process
Now that we have everything we need, we will describe step by step how to make a kennel.
This is a fairly simple job, but, like any construction business, it requires care.
- First we build the bottom and frame. From bars 40 to 40 we assemble the frame for the bottom and nail the floorboards as closely as possible to each other so as not to form cracks. If your pet is large and heavy, reinforce the floor additionally with the same bars to save the floor from sagging. On the finished bottom in the corners, fasten the bars 100 to 100 in a vertical position. This will be the basis for the walls. Our design looks like a table upside down. Now perpendicular to the bottom, set the bars 40 by 40 between the main bars. They will serve as roof support, wall reinforcement and manhole designation.
- Go to the walls. In order to sheathe the booth outside, use the paneling, which does not stratify with time, unlike plywood. It is better to fix the trim with galvanized nails with small hats.
- When the walls are ready, we begin to build a ceiling. If you are planning to install a booth in an open-air cage or under a canopy, there will be a rather thin ceiling, which will serve as a roof at the same time. If the kennel will stand in the open, the ceiling and the roof should be made separately and additionally insulated. For the ceiling, take a sheet of plywood of the appropriate size and bars 40 by 40. Fasten a layer of mineral wool or polystyrene on top, dress it with glassine, and cover it with a second sheet of plywood. If you do not plan to put an additional roof, then you can simply close the ceiling with roofing felt and lay shingles.
- Now make the roof gables: take the bars 40 to 40 for the perimeter, attach the glassine from the inside and sheathe the outside with clapboard.
- The last step is to enter. It should be closed from the wind with a canvas curtain, and so that it does not wrap or open, hang loads from the inside, for example, plastic bags with sand.
Well, the booth is ready. To give it a finished beautiful look, coat it outside with varnish or paint.
Insulated dog house: what to do to make the pet feel comfortable even in winter
We have already said that additional warming will not be needed in all cases. Your dog may be shaggy enough to do without a warm kennel, and the yard is closed enough for cold winds and damp. But still the question of insulation and waterproofing is a separate consideration.
- First of all, remember that you can not put the booth directly on the ground. Because of this, the floor will quickly begin to rot. Install logs on the ground – thick boards, logs or bricks, on which you will lift the finished booth. This will be the first step to waterproofing the structure.
- Turn the structure over so that it is installed upside down. How should it be treated outside with an antiseptic, cover with roofing material and nail in addition over the bars 100 to 50, also pre-impregnated with antiseptic. Having turned the structure back to its original position, cover the bottom with glass mat, lay a layer of insulation (mineral wool or polystyrene), lay it again with glass mat and fix the finishing floor.
- The walls are insulated in exactly the same way and lined with clapboard on the inside. In this way, you will ensure that the design of the effect of a thermos, which allows you to keep warm from the inside.
Remember that if you have made a booth from a thick timber of 8-10 cm, then the wall insulation is not necessary, but the roof and floor will need to be warmed.
All these methods will help you provide protection from moisture, drafts, dampness, which means that the pet will be comfortable and cozy in the booth.
How to care for a doghouse
As you know, it is not enough to build a good building, you need to take care of it in order to extend the maximum service life and save time for major repairs. This is especially true for a doghouse.
It should be cleaned at least once a month: sweep away leftovers, bones, wool and debris that the pet dragged inside. It is also necessary to regularly disinfect the kennel: in the winter it is enough once per season, from spring to autumn, especially in summer – at least every month. The same applies to the fight against parasites. The treatment of a booth with creolin, lysol or formalin will not be superfluous. While the walls treated with mortar dry, it is better for the dog to be far from the booth.
In order to simplify the subsequent care of the kennel, during the construction make it collapsible.
For example, with a folding roof or retractable walls. Thus, you can also simply brush the snow in winter from the surface of the booth, and it will be much easier to disinfect from the inside of the structure.
In addition, in the event of a breakdown or damage to any element of the structure, it is much easier to replace it if it is collapsible than to repair everything completely.

Choosing the location of the dog house
Before construction of a dog kennel you need to choose the most suitable place for its location.
For this you need to be guided by the following:
- the location of the kennel must be dry and moderately sunny;
- there should be no other pets near the booth, as their waste products adversely affect the pet’s health;
- the place should be spacious and free to move;
- Remember, any objects located nearby can be a favorite entertainment for your four-legged friend;
- the dog from the booth must see everything that happens around, all family members and guests, otherwise he will always be excited about something.
Choosing a booth design and material
Dog kennels can be very diverse, both inside and outside.
The simplest version of the kennel is a square, usually rectangular shape with a manhole closed by some kind of cloth.
A more thoughtful and comfortable dog is a booth with a vestibule. It protects the pet from cold, rain, snow and wind much better. Basically, the vestibule is not insulated, however, if you want to further reduce the heat loss of your home, then it is better to fix the foam or mineral wool layer, and hang a curtain at the entrance, for example, from an old overcoat.
Pine and spruce boards are the best material for building a doghouse; it is not only durable and practical, but also capable of repelling various intrusive insects with its smell.
Brick, plywood, foam blocks, etc., are not the best option for a kennel, as over time these materials will begin to stratify.
For the frame fit the bars of 40 × 40 (50 × 50) or 40 × 25 (50 × 25) millimeters. For exterior plating – wooden lining, plastic eurolining, etc. For interior lining – lining or waterproof plywood with a thickness of at least 5 millimeters. A rabbitted floorboard is ideal as a floor covering for a kennel. Mineral wool, foam – an excellent option, serving as a heater.
Selection of booth sizes
The dimensions of the booth are selected based on the size of its owner and the climate of the environment. Conditionally dogs are divided into small, medium and large. Booths are divided according to the same principle. For the smallest, for example, shih-tzu, dachshunds, a doghouse with a height of 600 mm, a length of 700 mm, and a width of 550 mm will be comfortable. For medium-sized, Rottweiler, German Shepherd dogs, a booth with dimensions of 750x1200x800 mm will suit. For averages, for example, the Caucasian Shepherd Dog, a dwelling with dimensions of 1100x1400x1000 mm would be ideal.
However, amendments are also possible based on the individual characteristics of your four-legged pet. The dog should enter without problems, and turn around in the booth. The width of the manhole is made across the width of the chest, adding 50-100 mm. The height of the manhole is determined by the height of the animal minus 50 mm.
It is worth remembering that too spacious kennel will not warm up during the winter, so it is important to make it the most optimal size for the dog.
How to make a dog house – instruction
From the outset, you should decide on the dimensions of the dog’s home and cut out all the details of the intended size. Then you can proceed to the assembly of the kennel for your favorite animal.
It is always necessary to start building a dog house from the bottom. To make the booth as warm and comfortable as possible, the floor should be slightly elevated above the ground or made double. To do this, use two 40 × 40 lumber, on top of which, fix the floorboard. To keep your favorite pet’s claws from getting stuck in the crevices, lay a sheet of plywood on the floor.
The next stage is the construction of the frame of the future booth. The best option to ensure maximum warmth of the dog’s home will be a structure consisting of double dense walls, between which there is a heater, for example, mineral wool.
Four support posts 100 × 100 in length equal to the height of the booth plus 4-5 cm are mounted at the corners of the finished base; install a harness of bars along the upper part of them. After that you should organize the entrance area.
Nails should be hammered from the inside of the frame, for additional strengthening of the wooden frame, use screws.
Drawing kennels for dogs:
The roof should fit snugly to the walls of the kennel, but it is not desirable that it be nailed tightly, as this will further complicate the process of cleaning the canine home.
As the roofing material is well suited profiled, tile or slate.
For the manufacture of the roof structure, wooden bars 40 × 40 are used, of which the perimeter is knocked down, on which the sheets of plywood are mounted.
If the doghouse is large, then in order for the plywood not to sag in the middle it is necessary to install intermediate bars.
The length of the timber for the ridge of the roof should be somewhat greater than the length of the dog kennel itself in order to provide a canopy behind and in front. Secure it over the roof pillars. On each side of the roof you need three rafters, the upper ends of which must be cut at the angle of the roof. Initially, attaching rafters to the ridge, mark the points of contact with the frame of the kennel, and then use a hacksaw to prepare triangular grooves. Next, carefully fasten the ends of the rafters to the booth. Connect the horizontal bars to the frame posts. To the lower end of the rafters, nail the bar, slightly protruding from both sides of the roof.
Cut four more rafters (2 pairs each), nail their upper ends with nails to the ridge, and attach the lower ones to the slats previously stuffed to the frame rafters. The result should be a roof frame in the form of a triangle.
Then obbeyte the resulting frame plywood.
So that in future, the roof for cleaning could be raised at the ends of the corner boards, drive half nails with a diameter of about 10 mm, and cut the caps off. Gables will be put on these pins, in which holes should also be made.
For convenience, handles can be equipped on the roof.
If your pet is sitting on a leash, then be sure to take care of some kind of canopy in front of the booth so that he can hide in the cool shade.
Warming dog booths
Wooden boards must be treated with a special solution from the appearance of mold and, accordingly, an increase in service life. Soak this liquid to the entire kennel, starting from the bottom and ending with the roof.
Initially, parchment is laid on the bottom of the booth, which serves as a vapor barrier and is secured with a stapler. Then the insulation is fixed, for example, mineral wool or foam, after which the parchment is once again covered. This is necessary in order to prevent the penetration of micro-particles of insulation to the outside, which may adversely affect the health of the animal. Then fix the sheet of plywood.
The same principle is used to insulate the walls of a dog’s dwelling: the vapor barrier is fixed, then the insulation is insulated, and then the waterproofing is laid and sheathed outside.
At the entrance to the booth it is better to equip the curtains with felt or tarpaulin, which forms an additional protection for the pet from cold and heat. To prevent the tarpaulin from rising at the bottom of the curtain during strong winds, attach special plastic bags with sand.
Consider the option of additional insulation booths. The rule always works: the smaller the room where the dog is located, the easier it is to heat it with the heat of your body.
Let’s take as a basis the warmed booth with the platform. The walls of the vestibule, like the whole booth, are insulated, and the entrance is covered with a curtain.
Inside the booth is another partition with a curtain. It can be made removable, it is removed for the summer – it turns out a spacious room where the dog can lie on its side to its full height, and is mounted for the winter, while more than half of the room is allocated to the platform – it turns out a square space where the dog can sleep, curled up.
The change is to increase the space of the vestibule and reduce the bed.
The dog will now have two beds: a vestibule is a colder space, and a small nest bedroom is warmer. In which of them is located, the four-legged pet itself will decide.
After the construction process is completed, the outside and inside of the kennel must be sheathed with roofing material with galvanized nails. For interior cladding fit wall paneling, plywood or chipboard, pre-saturated with linseed oil or varnish.
Exterior plating is more demanding on materials, since a booth must combine not only efficiency, but also attractiveness. For these purposes, such lumber as lining, block-house, wood panels, etc. are ideal. To prevent water from getting into the gaps, lining should be fixed with self-tapping screws with a spike upwards. The tree outside is impregnated with a protective composition, if desired, painted. A dog shed will look very harmonious and attractive, covered with the same material as your house, for example, stone, siding, etc.
The final stage of home improvement for your beloved pet
For your pet, you must make a soft bed of hay, straw or sawdust.
The most optimal warrant will be the use of pine and cedar sawdust for this purpose. They are very soft, perfectly absorb excess moisture and bad odors, in addition, they are not bad at repelling various insects. They are environmentally friendly and have a pleasant pine or cedar smell.
Hay or straw can also be used as a litter, but experts do not advise doing this, since various organic bacteria are often found in these organic materials and they attract parasites, which can lead to infection of your beloved pet with various diseases.
Always remember that dogs require special care and domestic warmth, so the construction of a warm and cozy dog house should be taken responsibly.
Building a dog house doesn’t take half a day to do it yourself. The materials for the booth are simple and convenient to use. The four-legged guard, as well as a full-fledged member of the family, needs a well-equipped home. Skillfully selected materials, unusual design of the kennel, will decorate any site.
Drawing of the doghouse
It is reasonable to choose a booth with a rectangle at the base and a flat lean-to roof. You should not build partitions inside, complicate the design. Dogs do not need rooms, they need comfort and enough space to lie down as they feel comfortable.
Traditionally, the roof is made folding or removable, so the owner gets the opportunity to perform aseptic processing and cleaning the booth, without rearranging and turning it over.
The size of the dog’s dwelling should be strictly proportional to the parameters of the animal. The width, height and other characteristics of the booth are calculated by the following formulas:
- Height: must be 5 cm greater than the height of the animal. (Width = height);
- Depth: animal length 5 cm;
- Exit height: 5 cm height of the animal at the withers;
- Width of an exit: more than width of a breast is 5 cm.
On a millimeter or ordinary paper, they carry out a drawing of a dog box, in which they put all the necessary measurements. Now it’s time to choose materials. The best solution would be to use coniferous wood – this building material is cheap, practical, and even a beginner can easily work with it.
List of building materials. Tools
It is better to prepare raw materials in advance. From the tools we need screws or nails, a puncher, hinges, a stapler. Dry timber 10×5 and 10×10 cm, edged board 2.5 cm, eurolining, sheet chipboard, foam plastic, roofing material, asphalt, disinfecting impregnation: this is an approximate list of building materials.
For best results, you can make your list by specifying the exact number of each of the components. However, remember that any raw material is taken with a margin.
Before work it is important to take care of the animal. To clean the boards in order to avoid splinters on the paws, and to carry out the impregnation only after the construction is completed, as unpleasant smells frighten off the animals, and the dog may not recognize its home.
The four-legged friend will appreciate the vast area on top of his house, where he can bask in the sun. For this, it is convenient to build lean-to roofs, which, moreover, should be easily removed when it is necessary to clean up the booth. It is necessary to take care of the dog’s heat already at this stage of design. The entrance to the house is placed in a corner on the side, which is obviously wider, since with this arrangement the wind does not blow inwards. The dog should be able to sleep in a place protected from the cold.
Stage 1. Assembling the bottom frame
From the bars of 4×4 cm fold a rectangular frame, the sides of which will be the length and width of the booth. Do it on a flat surface. Strengthen screws. The frames of houses for dogs of large breeds suggest the presence of 1-2 additional partitions. The stage is finished by covering the frame with boards.
Stage 2. Floor insulation
The resulting structure is laid in bars upwards. Glassite is attached with a stapler inside, polystyrene is placed on it between the bars. The last layer is another sheet of glassine, laid on top of the insulation. The thickness of the insulating material is determined by the height of the bar. After these steps, the floor is slapped with boards, on which the dog will walk.
Stage 3. Construction of the kennel frame
We will need 4 bearing bars. To do this, use timber 10x10cm. Of these, 2 are equal to the height of the kennel, and the remaining 2 are 8–11 cm longer than the first. These will be corner bars, so they are set in the appropriate positions on the floor frame. On the one hand, they place long, and on the other hand, shorter bars so that a roof slope is formed in the future. With this design, additional bars will be needed in the center of each of the walls and from the sides of the exit.
Stage 4. Inner and outer wall cladding
Apply lining to a covering of an external surface of the box. Warming from the inside is made on the same principle as in stage 2. Only a plywood sheet or similar building material is attached to the top layer of glassine. Great care in lining should be paid so that there are no protruding nail caps to avoid wounds and injuries to the pet.
Stage 5. Shed roof
The first step is to build a frame of 4×4 cm bars, impose a sheet of OSB on it. Then put the foam, close the film, perform the fixation. In order to protect the walls of the booth from the rain and form a kind of visor over the exit, take a plywood sheet of larger size (approximately 15-20cm). You can use boards. Fix the design on the resulting frame. The roof is almost ready. Place the frame on the booth, using loops, perform fasteners. From above cover a surface with a waterproof material, often use roofing material.
Stage 6. Exterior and interior
Outside, the surface is treated by impregnation. Why it is not necessary to do it from the inside, as mentioned above. At the bottom reinforced roofing material, bend its edges a bit on the wall. Then fix 2 bars, covering them with a primer mixture. The final step is to execute the exit design.
Final stage 7. Choosing a place for the booth
When installing the booths choose the territory from which the site is clearly visible. Your security guard should keep a close eye on everything that happens. The place should be flat, bright, better under a natural or artificial canopy. Choose a plot near your own home.
Many owners of decorative dogs wonder: how to make a box for a small-sized dog. It is inappropriate to make a house for dogs of large breeds in such a design, since cleaning becomes almost impossible, therefore this option is suitable for small breeds.
Stage 1. Assembling the bottom frame and frame
They take 4 bars for the frame, in the corners they drive 4 more bars along the height of our booth. Finish the frame by connecting the vertical columns on top with four more bars. Reinforce the supporting structure auxiliary commissures.
Stage 2. Roof construction
The gable roof assumes the presence of such a supporting system as rafters. To better understand the complex design, be sure to look at the photo of the dog booth at this stage of construction. Combining two bars 5×5 cm at an angle of 40 °, we get the first truss foot. One leg is attached from one end of the booth, the other, built according to the same principle, from the other. Connect the two gables with a ridge girder (the bar should protrude 200 mm on one side).
Stage 3. Plating
Similarly, a booth with a gable roof cladding is carried out clapboard, the bottom – roofing material. Use parallel bars as supports, if necessary.
Stage 4. Thermal insulation
Polystyrene is tightly laid on the first layer of glassine. Cover it with a second layer of glassine. The walls and floor of the house are upholstered with plywood or chipboard.
Stage 5. Roofing
To perform these works, the roof must be removed. Inside, traditionally upholstered with plywood, turned the opposite side, glassine is fastened over the plywood. Perform thermal insulation of the roof in a familiar pattern. Make out the ridge of the roof, drill holes in the gables for nails. Now the roof is convenient and quickly put back and removed for cleaning.
Warm comfortable booth with a vestibule
The design of such a house is represented by two components: the dwelling of the dog itself and the vestibule – the part intended for isolation from the wind. The kennel looks very decorative, and the dog has the ability to shelter from the rain not only in its sleeping place, but also outside.
The main difference between the construction of a booth with a vestibule from that of the usual in the presence of a special partition between the vestibule and the kennel itself. Bars 4×4 cm folded into a frame, the size of which corresponds to the internal height and width. A piece of plywood is placed on the frame, insulated, covered with a second plywood sheet. It is also possible to make a construction from two slats, which makes it easy to remove the partition.
