How To Build A Doghouse Do It Yourself
The dog may be just a family pet, a reliable guard, a friend. In any case, an animal who spends most of its time on the street needs its own home. This is a matter of comfort and health. The construction of a dog house allows the owner to show himself as a true master and person with a well-developed sense of taste.
Absolutely everyone can build a booth on their own, even without special construction skills. Materials can be used, both handy and professional. The first and very important step is to prepare a drawing of the future structure.
The booth must fit the size of the animal. A large dog will refuse to constrain himself in a small house. The little dog will just freeze in the big booth. Canine recommended for small breeds to put a booth with dimensions 80 60cm, for large – 120 100cm. The average animals put the booth 100 80cm.
If you want to put a house specifically for a particular dog, use a simple rule: height = height of the animal 6 cm, length = length of the animal 10 cm, width = length – 20 cm. Variations are also possible here. For example, an animal is too well fed, so when calculating the width of a room, you will have to deviate a little from the formula.
Laz depends on the dog’s love for his new home
The entrance to the booth should be 6 cm wider than the animal’s chest and at the same height longer than the height of the beast at the withers. The owner of the house should be able to freely enter the room. Too large entrance sizes do not allow the booth to retain heat normally in cold weather. If the puppy got a booth for an adult animal, then for the first time it is necessary to cover the upper part of the manhole. As the animal matures, the valve / flap retracts.
The bottom of the entrance can not rest directly on the floor. The dog needs a small threshold (not less than 5 cm). This structural element provides protection against precipitation and wind. The beast needs to be able to comfortably curl up and sleep, away from prying eyes and piercing wind. That is why when drawing up a drawing, the booths are trying to be placed as close as possible to the edge of one of the long sides.
Summer / winter version
Not all dogs live on the street all year round. In summer, it’s enough to hide from the heat and rain. In winter, the animal wants to be warm and comfortable, so when building it is necessary to think about how to warm the walls and ceiling.
In the booths of the winter version, the walls are made double: the base and the interior. Between the two layers is placed the material insulation. The space left under the insulation is determined by the size of the booth frame and the capabilities of the material itself (thermal insulation qualities, thickness in the package). The ceiling must also be double, which in most cases pushes the owners to put a lean-to roof on the building. A creative approach and a bit of free time allows you to get rid of the stereotype about the “cold gable roof in a booth”. Beautiful can not only booth summer type.
Porch with a canopy
Every dog needs to hide from the sun on a hot day, but not to lose sight of the protected area. Bowls with food do not want to look in the snow or go out for dinner in the rain. Canopy allows you to solve all the problems of the animal. The canopy can be large enough so that the dog can walk. They are made to be closed on both sides to protect from the wind. Often one of the walls is made of a transparent material (for example, plastic, polycarbonate, glass). It all depends on the nature of the animal and features of placement on the territory.
Small canopies are set above the porch, allowing the dog to lie quietly or sit, watching his fence. Usually this is a continuation of the roof, based on two columns – the riser.
Important! The presence of a canopy and a porch must be thought out at the drawing-up stage, in order to ensure the future construction of maximum reliability.
Spacious “dvushka” or warm “studio”?
In regions with cold winters or strong winds, it is recommended that the booth be slightly lengthened by making a small vestibule. For this, a partition is installed inside, in which one more hole is left. It should be as far as possible from the entrance to the booth. The vestibule itself is recommended to be made in such sizes that it would be comfortable for the animal to unfold in it, and also to lie in good weather.
Some responsible watchmen do not allow themselves to enter a warm room without drafts simply because from there they will not be able to track the movement of objects throughout the territory. Especially for such vigilant animals, they put models of a box with a window. In this case, the window should be located on the same part of the house as the manhole.
A two-room booth is needed by the bitch to ensure the safety of the puppies. So they will always remain under the supervision of the mother, and she will be able to rest from them in the first part of the booth. Two-room booth in the summer version is no different from the booth with the vestibule. The winter model is an elongated version: a regular booth (maybe even with a vestibule) the same room for puppies.
- Jigsaw (when working with chipboard, OSB)
- Building level
- Metal corners to strengthen the frame.
Traditionally dog box is made of wood. There are many reasons for this, among which is practicality, aesthetics of the structure, wear resistance. It’s easier to work with a tree. Here are just options for wooden houses and a huge variety, and they begin with the availability of material.
This is a must bar. Depending on the strength of the animal and the weight of the future structure, the size of the bar can be 5 5 cm or reach 15 15 cm.
Important! In the small booths collected from scraps of a rounded log or bar, the frame is not assembled.
Round logs. The structure looks solid, soundly, but does not always fit into the overall landscape. Most often, this is a one-room booth without a tambour.
- Styrofoam. Polyfoam provides reliable heat retention under the condition of complete tightness of the structure. It is important to foam all parts of the joints with foam. The most commonly used sheets are 5 cm thick.
- Mineral wool. The material has good thermal insulation, but the smallest particles of glass cause serious irritation of the eyes, mucous membranes, and skin. When installing, be sure to lay a layer of waterproofing on both sides of the insulation.
- Sawdust. Affordable and convenient material. During installation, it is necessary to close all openings that may lead to the eruption of insulation from the walls. To do this, layers of cardboard or roofing felt can be laid from the inside of the walls, only after that the space between them is filled with sawdust.
Reliable flooring fitted tightly to each other.
Thick sheet of chipboard, OSB or thick plywood. This option is poorly suited for large dogs with an aggressive or too playful character.
In accordance with the general style of buildings in the territory and the shape of the roof, the material for the roof of the booth is also selected. On the gable roof the metal looks beautiful (professional sheet metal). Metal can also be used to hang over the porch in front of the booth.
On sloping roofs, many animals can lie down or sit to gain maximum visibility. The material must be durable, allowing it to withstand the weight of the jumping animal, for example, slate, board.
Racks for a canopy
It is recommended to use wooden bars for these purposes. They are convenient to mount, they are durable and practical in operation.
The need for the basics
Dogs differ in character, habits, needs. Some animals can safely walk around the yard, while others have to put on a chain in order to avoid accidents. For real big-sized crooks, it is important to take care of a reliable chain mounting near the booth. Repeatedly, there were cases when an insufficiently heavy booth, a dog, simply dragged along on a chain in pursuit of another victim. And even for such animals you can put beautiful, light, frame houses. It is only important to properly prepare the basis for them.
The foundation is important not only in capital construction. In the case of the booth, he will play the role of a reliable, flat base, and will also securely hold the ring for the chain.
When pouring the foundation, you should first prepare the site: go deeper into the ground by 15 cm and level the surface. On the perimeter of the frame is exposed – formwork and securely fastened. Then a so-called “pillow” (10 cm sand-gravel mix) inside the formwork is prepared. At the same stage, a ring is set for the chain. Then the cement mortar is diluted in a ratio of 1: 4 and the foundation is poured with a thickness of 10–15 cm. If necessary, the deepening into the ground can be made larger so that the resulting foundation does not almost rise above the ground.
Work begins with the manufacture of the floor. Preparations are made from the bar corresponding to the lengths of the four sides of the future structure 2 additional transverse parts. If the booth has a porch, then the frame is prepared at once for the whole booth with a porch. Their separate execution cannot guarantee reliability. All elements are interconnected with nails or screws. Additionally, the corners are reinforced with metal corners.
The resulting frame is closed with the selected material for the floor. This achieves the necessary rigidity for further work. When attaching the floor, carefully tighten the heads of the screws or nails into the material to avoid injuries to the paws of the dog.
The assembly of walls begins with the placement of risers that are attached directly to the floor at the corners and at the location of the internal partition. The next stage depends on the chosen roof variant:
On top of the risers are horizontal elements that repeat the details of the base of the floor. Then, on the end sides, the base for the gable roof is assembled.
The risers on one side are longer, providing the lean-to roof with the desired angle of inclination. Bars lie parallel to the bottom, linking the risers on top.
The selected material is attached to the riser bars outside. If the choice fell on the board, then during the installation it is worthwhile to take care of the tight fit of all the parts to each other. When creating a single-shed roof box, it is important to take care of accurate fitting of parts from the front side due to the presence of a small angle of inclination.
As soon as the walls are ready, proceed to warming. Polyfoam stack immediately and zapenyvayut joints. In the case of mineral wool and similar materials, first, insulating material is fixed to the surface of the walls from the inside, then the insulation itself and again the insulating material. Already after install the inner part of the wall, which is also the interior decoration.
Important! Warming up sawdust requires laying insulation material on the inner parts immediately for the inner and outer walls. Insulation occurs after placing both walls. In the case of such a construction, the risers are not fixed on top of the bar until the walls are completely covered.
For the ceiling, the same material is chosen as for the walls. The base is laid directly on the upper bar. The heater is mounted on top and securely covered with additional wooden material (for example, wall material).
On the frame for the roof mounted lathing of 2-5 horizontal boards with a thickness of 7-15 mm. The gable roof is assembled from elements of the selected material of the desired size, which are simply attached to the crate. The ridge is covered with a metal corner, tightly screwing it to the roofing material. The dimensions of the slopes slightly exceed the dimensions of the booth itself, leaving 5 cm on the sides and 5-7 from the bottom. The main difficulty lies in the assembly of the gable. Every detail should be precisely tailored to the chosen angle of inclination.
A shed roof needs an additional base frame, which is attached directly to the ceiling. Already this framework is mounted lathing and roofing material directly. It should also go beyond the boundaries of the booth itself by 5-10 cm from all sides.
Booth of bricks and blocks
Until recently, it was believed that building a shed from a brick was a waste of manpower and materials. An animal in such a house languishes in the summer from the heat, and freezes in the winter, therefore it prefers to be constantly outside. Some too active animals quickly put their booth in a terrible state, gnawing holes in the walls and scratching the floors. For such animals, a stone house is the most reliable solution.
A foundation must be poured under the booth, which must dry out well (in warm weather for at least 2 days). If you use a conventional brick, then choose a laying of half-brick, and outside the wall is warmed with mineral wool and profiled sheet. Above the brick is laid a bar of the appropriate size for fixing the ceiling and roof.
Foam blocks are distinguished by their large size, which looks good when building a house for a large dog. They do not require additional insulation, allowing you to maintain the necessary animal temperature at different times of the year. The wall is crowned with walls, allowing to install the roof and ceiling.
In both cases, you should take care of the wooden insulated ceiling, but the material of the walls does not affect the appearance and the method of mounting the roof.
For self-construction of the booth it is enough to find only one free day and stock up with all the necessary tools / materials. If at the first stage something does not work, then it is enough just not to give up, so that soon the four-legged pet could appreciate its own property with gratitude. And most importantly – self-construction allows you to find yourself as a creator and designer.
