What fuel filters are they?

There are three main groups:

  1. Fuel pre-filters;
  2. Fine fuel filters;
  3. Fuel separators.

The first group is not very popular for passenger car engines. In them, the elimination of large and small particles of impurities from the fuel is entrusted to a single filter.

The second group is the most common. Filters of this type can be either housing with threaded fastening, or in the form of filter elements that do not contain metal.

The difference between coarse and fine filters is mainly paper. If the preliminary cleaning involves the retention of particles with a size of 75-100 microns, then the final cleaning in the best filter samples allows you to retain particles up to 3-5 microns in size.

Filter elements can be made with metal covers (for secure fastening of the filter material) and can be performed with or without reinforcing mesh. Both of them are always installed in cases made of heat-resistant material.

What is the risk of driving with a clogged fuel filter

1. Rough engine operation, power loss – sure signs that the fuel filter should be changed. A clogged filter is not able to fulfill its duties – cleaning fuel from harmful impurities, as a result of which the power system and fuel injection nozzles become clogged, the amount of gasoline necessary for normal operation does not enter the engine.

2. Accelerated spark plug wear, accelerators and lambda probes. Fuel that has not been properly cleaned up burns out fragmentarily, partially it settles on cylindrical partitions, pistons and candles, after which a combustible mixture saturated with heavy metals and foreign particles enters the exhaust system through a lambda probe and accelerators, thus slowly but surely reducing their service life.

3. Increased fuel consumption. This is not to say that a clogged fuel filter is directly reflected in an increase in the appetite of your iron horse – an increase in fuel consumption is due to the clogged filter “stealing” power, and in order to disperse an iron horse, it is necessary to “press on the gazulka” harder, which actually requires more fuel.

4. Engine failure to start. Yes, do not be surprised, but if you constantly ignore the requirements of the manufacturer of your car to replace the fuel filter, then one day your iron horse may simply refuse to start.

Where is the fuel filter installed?

As for the location of the fine filter, opinions from automakers have changed over time. Initially, all filters were installed under the bottom of the car or in the engine compartment and were easily accessible for replacement.

Then (increasingly) the filter began to be installed in the fuel module. Such a solution, of course, is more compact and convenient for manufacturers of current “disposable” cars. But filter replacement is either not provided at all, but only as part of the module, or involves a large amount of work on dismantling and complete disassembly of the module. Moreover, the fuel module in some cars cannot be removed without having to remove the tank, and this is even more ambitious work.

So far, it has been a gasoline filter. Diesel fuel filters are always installed separately from the fuel tank, because they, in addition to more frequent replacement, also need water sensors, a plug for draining water and, often, a heating system.

What happens if the fuel filter is clogged?

Disables filters, of course, dirt that enters the tanks of our cars with fuel. And by no means refineries are to blame. Fuel may become contaminated during storage and pumping. And the driver will feel the clogging of the fuel filter by the behavior of the car, and first in those modes where the instantaneous fuel consumption by the engine is maximum. These are driving modes with high speeds and intense acceleration. At the same time, the engine will lose traction, work intermittently, although everything will look decent when idling and in “quiet” modes.

How often do I need to change the fuel filter?

The frequency of routine filter replacement is primarily determined by the vehicle manufacturer. Some manufacturers have 30,000 km, while others have 120,000 km. Moreover, frequent replacements are usually recommended by manufacturers who put the filter outside the fuel tank. Changing the fuel filter ahead of time is only worth it if you are sure that extraneous mechanical particles or a large amount of water have got into the tank. In this case, the tank should also be flushed, and it is possible to replace the fuel pump.

Fuel filters for diesel engines are most difficult in winter: after all, thickened fuel must pass through the filter material. That is why a preventive filter change on a diesel car is best done in the fall. This is due to the fact that the filter capacity, already reduced by clogging with solid particles, will be insufficient to pass cold, thickened fuel.
