How to Change a Fuel Filter On a Trimmer

AutoOt.Ru »Auto Repair» Replacing the fuel filter. Where is he located?

Healthy nutrition is the key to a long life and maximum performance of any heart of the car. We will clarify right away: this article is not about gasoline and diesel fuel.

The main "heroes" of it will be those who stand guard over the safety of "iron horses" – fuel filters. We will talk about the role they play in the life of the car, the complexity of their choice, and how important the timely replacement of the fuel filter is in this article.

There is a similar article on this topic. Replacing the cabin filter.

Why are they needed at all?

Forced fuel cleaning is a necessity that guarantees the operability of any engine running on liquid fuel. Filling the filter cavity, gasoline passes through the layer (there may be several) filter material, leaving particles of dust, dirt and other solid impurities on its surface that adversely affect engine parts.

Its principle of operation is based on the fact that water is heavier than diesel fuel, and centrifugal force helps to separate them from each other. Due to the specifics of the separators, most of them are heated.

What fuel filters are they?

There are three main groups:

  1. Fuel pre-filters;
  2. Fine fuel filters;
  3. Fuel separators.

The first group is not very popular for passenger car engines. In them, the elimination of large and small particles of impurities from the fuel is entrusted to a single filter.

The second group is the most common. Filters of this type can be either housing with threaded fastening, or in the form of filter elements that do not contain metal.

The difference between coarse and fine filters is mainly paper. If the preliminary cleaning involves the retention of particles with a size of 75-100 microns, then the final cleaning in the best filter samples allows you to retain particles up to 3-5 microns in size.

Filter elements can be made with metal covers (for secure fastening of the filter material) and can be performed with or without reinforcing mesh. Both of them are always installed in cases made of heat-resistant material.

This design provides for the presence of repair kits, because the re-installation of sealing rubber bands and copper washers is not recommended.

Having been born more than a hundred years ago due to a technological error, it is still a firm leader among all filter materials.

To extend the filter life, increase the filtration area and thereby improve the quality of the process itself, the paper is installed in the form of corrugations. The density of folds in it is such that in the "accordion" with a diameter of 100 mm a "curtain" can fit more than one meter long.

By the way, in the cost of a fuel filter, the cost of filter paper is more than 60%, which means that the manufacturer can reduce its cost only due to loss of quality!

Recently, filtering materials based on propylene have already been used more and more and have already earned the approval of motorists. An insignificant sector among filter elements is occupied by finely porous metal mesh.

Where is the fuel filter located?

Based on the task posed to the fuel filters, the most logical location in the highway is after the gas tank and in front of the engine.

It is very popular, for example, for Japanese manufacturers to use a constructive solution when gas pumps are made in a single housing with a filter. They are installed directly in the gas tank. This design has two significant drawbacks: the replacement of the fuel filter is available only to specialists of service stations and very often the failure of one leads to the replacement of the entire unit.

As for the domestic auto industry, AvtoVAZ designers placed a filter under the hood on their “classic”, which is very accessible for control and convenient for replacement. On later models, the filter was already “hidden” in the rear beam, under the bumper.

Speaking generally about the most common locations of fuel filters, we note the most popular:

  • Rear bumper
  • Niches of the bottom
  • Gas tank
  • Engine compartment or engine compartment.

Apart (on the frame) Separators and pre-filters can be installed on the vehicle.

Signs of a clogged fuel filter

As we have already noted, fuel quality is one of the main reasons for the failure of automobile engines. Simply put, once fuel filters stop cope with cleaning up what comes from the tank into the engine. To find the root of evil, we turn to the theory of operation of internal combustion engines (ICE)

Textbooks claim that the highest coefficient of performance (Efficiency) is achieved at a certain ratio of air and fuel in the combustion chamber. Ideally, it is 14.7 / 1.

What are the main manifestations of clogged fuel filter:

  1. Unstable engine idling. The tachometer needle twitches and stubbornly keeps at high speeds. New and clearly fake notes are added to the melody of the motor. Additional vibration appears. There are frequent cases when the motor starts to “troit”.
  2. Engine traction drop. In simple terms, pressing the accelerator pedal ceases to produce the desired result.
  3. The car starts to start poorly. There is a clear lack of fuel. All this ultimately leads to the fact that one day your “iron horse” generally refuses to fulfill the will of the owner, as always, at the most inopportune moment.

Note that the problem of timely replacement of the fuel filter is not new. To help motorists today, some manufacturers offer fuel filters equipped with pollution controls.

The operation of the sensors is based on the difference in theoretical pressure and actual (either inlet / outlet) flow.

How to replace the fuel filter?

If all this is not, and replacing the filter requires efficiency, then a regular jack can serve as a solution to the problem. How to use it is a topic far from our article, but it is worth recalling safety precautions.

Firstly, work should be done on a horizontal section and with the engine turned off. In addition, the motor must be allowed to cool.

Secondly, motor fuel is a flammable liquid, therefore, the presence of open flame, heat sources and smoking during operation should be excluded!

Thirdly, Before changing the fuel filter, a possible fuel leak should be foreseen, which will inevitably harm the environment. Please take care to minimize possible damage to nature.

If the procedure for removing the old and installing a new filter requires the use of special keys and fixtures, then use them and do not resort to the help of improvised tools. During the installation of the filter, it is advisable to lubricate the o-rings first.

Motor fuel may well be suitable as a lubricant. Tightening of threaded joints is done tightly, but without constriction, bordering on jamming and even thread breakdown.

If the filter design provides for the presence of a sump, then one should not forget to remove sediment from it. On many cars (especially with respectable service life) fuel filters are used, the replacement of which is dispensed with without a special tool.

The cost of the clamps is low, but a leak in the fuel line is fraught with serious trouble.

Do not believe those who say that fuel filters should last forever. Laboratory tests on top-quality gasoline under ideal conditions and in gentle conditions confirm that fuel purifiers have a very, very definite resource.

Now we make allowances for the quality of domestic fuel, admit the driving style that is far from ideal, apologize to the engine for extreme loads and listen to the opinion of professionals about how often you need to change the guards of fuel cleanliness.

In order not to get confused and not to miss the moment when changing the fuel filter, you can set a rule for yourself: for every even oil change, change gasoline cleaners.

Opinions of motorists on the frequency of filter replacement can vary both up and down, but we admit that here is the very case when it is not worth risking the health of the engine of your car.

Major brands of filters, or whom to trust?

Today, several hundred autofilter manufacturers are officially registered in the world. If we discard those who specialize only in air or hydraulic filters, then there will be 5-6 dozen of them.

At the same time, there are few manufacturers of quality filter paper. Most of them are in Europe. So it turns out that supporters of quality are forced to bring raw materials thousands of kilometers away, and those who seek to conquer the market at low prices take advantage of the fact that they are closer, cheaper, and of lower quality.

By far, the best choice is to install filters recommended by the car manufacturer.

Each car part has its own catalog number (it can be found in the operation manual)

Through it you can go to the filter number recommended by the manufacturer. There is an option even easier: contact specialists who will offer the original filter number on the VIN code of the car or put you before the choice of an alternative from several manufacturers.

To the eminent and deserving of the highest respect can be attributed such filter manufacturers:

  • Donaldson
  • Fleetguard
  • Parker
  • Separ
  • Mann

Worthy of their competitors include:

  • Wix
  • Boldvin
  • Knecht / mahle
  • Kolbenschmidt
  • Hengst filter

Recently, manufacturers have come to the market and have established themselves on a good side, such as:

  • Bosch
  • Sakura
  • Filtron
  • Mfilter
  • SCT

Note that some auto giants have their own filter manufacturing. These include HYUNDAI, FORD, IVECO, TOYOTA and others. Naturally, they recommend their products and give recommendations on the frequency of their replacement.

Of course, using the filters of the same brand with a car is prestigious, but obviously expensive. Thus, the question of which defenders trust the health of the engine, original or worthy analogues, remains to be decided by the car owner.

Filters may differ by the presence of, for example, reverse or bypass (bypass) of the valve, the valve operating pressure, throughput and, finally, the paper in them may have a different degree of filtration.

We also note this fact: not always the filter on which the inscription stands, for example, MANN, will actually be a “Mann” filter.

Summing up the above, we note that automobile filters in general and fuel filters in particular, although they are consumables, are a very, very important component of comfort, safety and, if you want, the profitability of a car. This means that every motorist should:

The fuel system is one of the main components of a modern car. The fuel filter, the main function of which is the purification of fuel (gasoline and diesel) before it is fed into the system, is on guard of the system’s proper operation. In modern cars, the filtration system consists of at least two degrees of purification. The first is called coarse because it filters out large particles of dirt that have fallen into the tank with gasoline. The second degree is a fine filter, which is installed between the fuel tank and the car engine (the exact location varies depending on the model of car).

The fuel filter clogs during operation and therefore needs to be replaced. Manufacturers recommend changing the fuel filter approximately every 25,000 kilometers. Or at least once every two years (the exact data can usually be found in the car manual). However, do not forget that the indicated figure is appropriate only when the car is used in good conditions, refuel with high-quality fuel and is not subjected to heavy loads. Now admit, do you operate your car in accordance with these requirements of the manufacturer? We are sure that if you were honest with us, then your answer is "No." It follows that the fuel filter replacement interval must be reduced by several times, otherwise you can’t avoid unpleasant consequences.

What is the risk of driving with a clogged fuel filter

1. Rough engine operation, power loss – sure signs that the fuel filter should be changed. A clogged filter is not able to fulfill its duties – cleaning fuel from harmful impurities, as a result of which the power system and fuel injection nozzles become clogged, the amount of gasoline necessary for normal operation does not enter the engine.

2. Accelerated spark plug wear, accelerators and lambda probes. Fuel that has not been properly cleaned up burns out fragmentarily, partially it settles on cylindrical partitions, pistons and candles, after which a combustible mixture saturated with heavy metals and foreign particles enters the exhaust system through a lambda probe and accelerators, thus slowly but surely reducing their service life.

3. Increased fuel consumption. This is not to say that a clogged fuel filter is directly reflected in an increase in the appetite of your iron horse – an increase in fuel consumption is due to the clogged filter “stealing” power, and in order to disperse an iron horse, it is necessary to “press on the gazulka” harder, which actually requires more fuel.

4. Engine failure to start. Yes, do not be surprised, but if you constantly ignore the requirements of the manufacturer of your car to replace the fuel filter, then one day your iron horse may simply refuse to start.

We hope that now you will not underestimate the importance of regular replacement of the fuel filter. Agree, it’s easier to prevent a problem than to treat it. In addition, replacing the fuel filter is not the most difficult procedure. Of course, you can try to replace the fuel filter yourself, but it’s better to still turn to the service for professionals who will do this much faster and better.

Love your car, take care of it, carry out maintenance regularly, as this will allow you to be sure that even at the most crucial moment your iron horse will not let you down, but is it not every car owner who dreams of it ?!

Why does the fuel filter need to be changed?

A car in its life consumes a myriad of fuel. If we take the average fuel consumption of 10 liters per hundred kilometers, then only for the guarantee period, which is equal to 100,000 km for most manufacturers, approximately 10,000 liters of fuel will pass through the car’s fuel system. Now imagine how much dirt can bring so much fuel into the power system.

Which cars install the fuel filter?

Fuel filters are installed on both gasoline and diesel vehicles. Moreover, the latter have higher quality requirements for filtration than gasoline ones. This is due to the fact that the pressure at which fuel is injected into the cylinders of a diesel engine is much greater than the similar parameter for gasoline counterparts. And higher pressures require less gaps in the pumps and nozzles; while the particles passed by the filter should be much smaller than the gap, so as not to cause wear.

How is the fuel filter arranged?

Fuel filtration in modern cars is two-stage. Before the gasoline pump, a small nylon intake screen is engaged in the screening of polluting particles. And then the final screening of particles larger than 10 microns (for gasoline) is carried out by a fine filter.

Where is the fuel filter installed?

As for the location of the fine filter, opinions from automakers have changed over time. Initially, all filters were installed under the bottom of the car or in the engine compartment and were easily accessible for replacement.

Then (increasingly) the filter began to be installed in the fuel module. Such a solution, of course, is more compact and convenient for manufacturers of current “disposable” cars. But filter replacement is either not provided at all, but only as part of the module, or involves a large amount of work on dismantling and complete disassembly of the module. Moreover, the fuel module in some cars cannot be removed without having to remove the tank, and this is even more ambitious work.

Fuel filter for diesel

So far, it has been a gasoline filter. Diesel fuel filters are always installed separately from the fuel tank, because they, in addition to more frequent replacement, also need water sensors, a plug for draining water and, often, a heating system.

What happens if the fuel filter is clogged?

Disables filters, of course, dirt that enters the tanks of our cars with fuel. And by no means refineries are to blame. Fuel may become contaminated during storage and pumping. And the driver will feel the clogging of the fuel filter by the behavior of the car, and first in those modes where the instantaneous fuel consumption by the engine is maximum. These are driving modes with high speeds and intense acceleration. At the same time, the engine will lose traction, work intermittently, although everything will look decent when idling and in “quiet” modes.

How often do I need to change the fuel filter?

The frequency of routine filter replacement is primarily determined by the vehicle manufacturer. Some manufacturers have 30,000 km, while others have 120,000 km. Moreover, frequent replacements are usually recommended by manufacturers who put the filter outside the fuel tank. Changing the fuel filter ahead of time is only worth it if you are sure that extraneous mechanical particles or a large amount of water have got into the tank. In this case, the tank should also be flushed, and it is possible to replace the fuel pump.

Fuel filters for diesel engines are most difficult in winter: after all, thickened fuel must pass through the filter material. That is why a preventive filter change on a diesel car is best done in the fall. This is due to the fact that the filter capacity, already reduced by clogging with solid particles, will be insufficient to pass cold, thickened fuel.

Frequency of replacement of gasoline filters of some manufacturers, thousand km:

  • Volkswagen 30 (remote filters)
  • Renault 120
  • Kia 60
  • Hyundai 60
  • Lada 30 (remote filters), 120 (built-in filters)

Some tips for replacing the fuel filter:

  • Refuel at proven, and even better – branded gas stations.
  • Try not to pour fuel into the tank immediately after the fuel has been drained from the tanker at the gas station, because the fuel in the tank is unstable and dirt is more likely to enter.
  • Do not pour fuel into old, rusty cans.
  • Change the fuel filters on time – then the malfunction will not catch you on a long journey.
  • Flush the fuel inlet mesh at the pump inlet: this will extend its service life.
