How to check the nozzle valve of a chainsaw carburetor

Chainsaw carburetor repair. Chainsaw carburetor. the device, adjustment and washing with their own hands

The carburetor. it is an essential element of a chainsaw, the function of which is to mix the fuel mixture with air and further supply the finished fuel to the engine of the tool. Despite the high reliability of modern carburetors, they are often subject to various breakdowns, which leads to a complete stoppage of the chainsaw engine. Let’s consider the design of this important unit and ways to troubleshoot it independently.

How to rebuild a chainsaw carburetor. simple and straightforward

As with other chainsaw assemblies, before you repair the carburetor, you should study its construction in detail. This will help determine the true failure and fix it quickly. The design of the chainsaw carburetor consists of such elements:

  • The pipe. it is equipped with a transverse flap, regulating the air inflow into the system;
  • Diffuser. located near the fuel inlet. When the diffuser narrows, the rate of air flow into the system increases;
  • Fuel needle. serves to distribute fuel;
  • Float chamber. regulates the fuel level at the point of entry into the channel.

For a better understanding of the construction of the node will need a diagram of the chainsaw carburetor. It clearly demonstrates the location and method of connection of the main elements of the node.

The principle of operation of the chainsaw carburetor is quite simple. The needle sprays fuel into the float chamber, and then the fuel mixes with the air. Then the ready mixture enters the cylinder of the engine. The more fuel is fed to the engine, the higher the amount of motor turnover.

Regardless of the manufacturer and model of the chainsaw, each of the modern tools is equipped with carburetors, which have an almost identical design and work on the same, and the same principle. The main differences lie in the materials of the parts and their location in the carburetor.

Chainsaw carburetor adjustment. when the procedure is required?

  • The engine does not start or stops right after it is started. the reason for this may be a shortage of fuel paired with an overabundance of air;
  • Increased fuel consumption. in this case, the amount of exhaust gases increases rapidly. The cause in this situation should be sought in the increase in the amount of fuel and decrease in the amount of air;

There are also a number of mechanical reasons that lead to the need to adjust the carburetor. These include:

  • Strong vibration. it leads to damage to the protective cap, which will result in the loss of fixation of all three adjustment screws;
  • Wear of the piston part of the motor. in such a situation, the adjustment of the carburetor will only temporarily extend the work of the tool. For a complete elimination of the malfunction it will be necessary to completely replace the piston group;
  • Formation of clogs. they appear as a result of using low-quality gasoline, damage to the filter or scale. In such cases, it will be necessary to dismantle, disassemble and clean the carburetor.

In any of the above cases, it is better not to delay the procedure of adjusting or flushing the unit. Otherwise it will lead to the failure of other, no less important elements of the chainsaw.

How to properly adjust the carburetor on a chainsaw?

Before adjusting the carburetor on the chainsaw, you will need to learn the value of the three screws required for adjustment. These screws have certain markings and names:

  • The screw “L” is necessary for adjustment of low revolutions;
  • The “H” screw is needed when adjusting the engine for high RPM;
  • The “T” screw is needed to adjust the idle speed.

It is worth noting that some chainsaws are equipped with only one “T” screw, so the adjustment of carburetors of such models is performed by manipulating only with this screw.

No matter how many screws you have on your chainsaw, the factory carburetor settings are best for your chainsaw. The screws themselves are initially used in order to adjust the chainsaw for work in certain weather conditions.

Chainsaw carburetors with three screws should be adjusted with the “L” and “H” screws. They must be turned clockwise to increase the RPM. In order to decrease the RPM the screws are turned against it. To adjust the carburetor you will need a special screwdriver for adjustment. it will not slip off the screws and damage the threads on their “caps”.

The process of adjusting the carburetor consists of two stages: the initial and the main. The adjustment procedure is as follows:

  • During the first step, the screws “L” and “H” must be turned clockwise all the way in;
  • After that these screws should be turned for 1.5 turns in the opposite direction;
  • At the second stage, it is necessary to start the chainsaw and leave it for 10 minutes for complete warm-up;
  • Then start to turn the screw “T” until the chainsaw motor begins to run steadily and the chain on the bar does not rotate.

How to check the carburetor of a chainsaw?

After the adjustment you need to check the acceleration, the maximum rpm and the engine idling. In the process of checking the first parameter, you should sharply press the gas trigger. If the motor does not start to gain revolutions, then you need to turn the screw “L” counterclockwise. A single turn should not exceed 1/8 of a full turn of the propeller.

To measure the maximum RPM you need to use the “H” screw. In order to increase the maximum RPM the screw is turned clockwise. To decrease the RPM, turn the screw in the opposite direction. In doing so, remember that the maximum RPM should not exceed 15,000 rpm.

For a final check when the chainsaw is idling you should start it up and put it on a flat surface. Allow the motor to warm up and pay attention to the following elements of the chainsaw:

  • The chain should not move;
  • Motor. when you pull the trigger, it should confidently gain speed until it reaches the set maximum limit.

Repairing a Makita chain saw carburetor. Adjusting the carburetor of a Makita chainsaw

Adjusting the carburetor of a Makita chainsaw affects the performance of the device, the quality of work. For the correct adjustment of the working unit of the equipment, it is important to: understand the principle of its operation, have the necessary tools, treat with care the fasteners, as well as closely located elements responsible for the functioning of the chainsaw.

Features of Makita carburetor adjustment

A Makita chainsaw carburetor works on the same principle as carburetors made by other manufacturers. This important part is responsible for mixing fuel with air. In order to avoid problems with the operation of the device, the Makita chainsaw is adjusted. This will help protect the engine of the equipment.

  • eliminate the risk of the carburetor creating a “lean” mixture;
  • minimize the risk of creating an oversaturated mixture, which negatively affects the performance of the engine, provoking rapid wear.

If you need a new carburetor on a Makita chainsaw ( you will adjust it, guided by the standard manual), choose one that is identical in structure to the original.

  • The basis of the basics is the air passage tube, which is connected to the choke (in the middle). The location of this part affects the amount of air that enters the engine when running.
  • Diffuser. It is not difficult to identify it, if you look carefully at the carburetor components. This part looks like a narrow tube whose main function is to adjust airflow rate.
  • Fuel line from float chamber (connected to nozzle).
  • A separate design that stands out from the others is the float chamber, which looks like a standard tank for fuel fluids.

adjustment screws

Adjustment of the carburetor of a Makita chainsaw is carried out with a set of adjusting screws, which are in the body of this design:

  • The screw marked L. corrects the low revolutions;
  • The screw marked H, it is used to adjust the high revolutions;
  • T screw for adjusting carburetor idle speed.
  • The engine is left to warm up (run the chainsaw for 10 minutes).
  • Checking the air filter and cleaning this part.
  • Stop the chain by turning the screw marked T (turn clockwise as far as it will go).

Use a tachometer to diagnose carburetor problems.

Important! Masters advise to listen to the sound that the screws make when turning. A “squealing” sound may indicate oversaturation of the mixture.

Algorithm for tuning

Carry out the adjustment of the chainsaw carburetor in two steps:

Important ! Some tuning steps need to be adjusted, depending on the Makita chainsaw model. To do this correctly, see the instruction manual.

  • Turn the high and low adjustment screws all the way in (turn clockwise).
  • At the moment of encountering resistance, make a turn and a half back.

Screw marked T, move in clockwise direction. Release it only when the engine is stable. Keep in mind that the chain should not move at this stage.

What to do if the engine shuts off when idling during tuning? In that case it is important to turn the screw quickly until it stops (turn it clockwise). If the manipulation causes the chain to move, turn the adjusting screw slowly back to the previous position.

How to check if the carburettor is set correctly?

To do this you need to speed up the chainsaw. Run the engine at maximum rpm to be able to judge its performance objectively. When you hit the gas pedal, the engine should rev up to about 15,000 rpm. This indicator indicates that the carburetor adjustment was successful.

If you can not achieve this indicator at high revolutions and acceleration is slow, you need to re-adjust the carburetor, working only with the screw, which has the marking L. Turn it counterclockwise. Turn the screw slowly so that the turn does not exceed 1/8 of a full turn.

If the problem is the opposite and you need to reduce the maximum rotation to 15 thousand, you need to turn the screw marked H. Rotate it gradually, slowly in the opposite direction to the clockwise direction.

by reducing the RPM to its optimum value, the risk of engine wear is reduced.

Bolt H controls the nipple, provides maximum revolutions. L bolt performs the same function, but provides the minimum rpm. Screw S is responsible for the accuracy of the idling speed. Perform this procedure with the engine off. Adjust the carburetor on the chainsaw by setting the appropriate angles of rotation of the first two bolts.

You can set the basic values as follows. Turn the first two bolts slowly in a clockwise direction and go back two revolutions after the stop. Turn the engine on and adjust the ignition on the STIHL chain saw and its carburetor. To do this, find the highest idle speed by turning the screw L in different directions. Once this maximum has been reached, the bolt must be returned to a quarter turn. In case the chain starts to move, the engine must be stopped.

Carry out a technical check. In particular, you need to determine the maximum number of revolutions, check the acceleration and stability of the engine at idle, as well as the compliance of these parameters with the basic values in the manual. Mixture quality for checking should be top notch. Before you rebuild your STIHL chain saw and change the carburetor it is best to leave this to the professionals.

The carburetor on a Partner 352 chain saw. About the carburetor structure

The carburetor serves to mix the combustible consistency with the air while respecting the proportions set in advance. If you do not keep exact measurements, your engine’s functionality is endangered. When during mixing the component receives a huge amount of air, and not enough fuel, then such a mixture is considered “lean”.

Do not allow oversaturation, because when a large amount of fuel compared to the air is also likely to malfunction or wear the engine. Adjusting the carburetor is necessary not only before the initial introduction, and when you identify any differences in his work. Before working with a chainsaw, don’t forget to run it in.

The components of the carburetor

A carburetor has a standard set of parts but this may vary slightly depending on the manufacturer. Components:

  • Basics. This is a special tube, which visually resembles an aerodynamic design. The air passes through it. There is a damper in the transverse direction in the middle of the pipe. Its position can be changed. The more it is extended into the aisle, the less air enters the engine.
  • Diffuser. It is the narrowed part of the tube. Adjusting the carburetor on a Partner 350 chain saw. It increases the airflow rate exactly in the segment where the fuel comes out.
  • Channels for fuel supply. Fuel mixture is in the float chamber, then goes to the nozzle, from which it flows to the atomizer.
  • Float chamber. Is a separate structural element, reminiscent of the shape of a tank. Designed to maintain an optimal fuel liquid level at all times before entering the channel from which the air enters.

Why an initial adjustment??

For the first few hours the 2-stroke chainsaw engine needs a running-in period, on which the quality of its future use depends. During the running-in period the initial adjustment of the carburetor is performed. the optimal parameters of fuel mixture preparation and supply are set.

The initial running-in of a chainsaw: thin material

Most modern chain saws come with settings. But it doesn’t hurt to check the factory settings. after all, you are the one who has to work with the machine.

At the first start-up the chain saw has to work sparingly. So for a few hours after starting it is recommended not to overload the engine and to cut only small branches and trunks up to 10 cm thick.

To insure against malfunctions in the chainsaw carburetor will help simple rules:

    Always mix gasoline and oil according to the manufacturer’s figures.

Fuel mix proportions for the chainsaw engine

The chainsaw should start correctly, have a consistent chainwheel speed and a smooth increase/decrease in power. No unusual knocking, squealing or noise from the engine.

A professional chainsaw at work

The most important thing during the first run-in is to make sure that the fuel consumption corresponds to the power used, i.e.е. In practice the saw should not go out, “sneeze”, smoke and jerk.

How to flush a chainsaw carburetor?

It is best to use a cleaner that comes in a pressurized can to clean the unit from heavy dirt. The cleaner comes with a dispenser and a long thin tube, which allows you to spray the product in any hard-to-reach places.

It should be remembered that cleaning the carburetor on a chainsaw is performed using flammable chemicals. They should be operated with a special protective mask and only in well-ventilated rooms.

To clean the carburetor on a chainsaw, the assembly will need to be partially disassembled. Throttle, adjusting screws, carburetor body and other carburetor parts will need to be washed with a spray can and leave until completely dry. Once all components are dry, the assembly can be reassembled and put back on the chainsaw.

The nozzle valve in the chainsaw carburetor

This chainsaw carburetor diagram is as simple and effective as possible. In some models of garden tools, it can be supplemented with additional spigots, glands or filters.

  • aluminum housing with one-piece construction. Inside the housing there is an inlet fitting, a main screw, a pulse channel, and a bolt for adjusting the motor when idling;
  • throttle valve. it is responsible for adjusting the amount of air required to enrich the fuel mixture;
  • diffuser. located next to the chamber inlet;
  • atomizer. designed for supplying the fuel mixture directly into the carburetor chamber;
  • Float chamber. in it there is a float, which is triggered in case of insufficient amount of fuel;
  • nozzles. are valves that are responsible for adjusting the amount of fuel.

This chainsaw carburetor circuit is as simple and effective as possible. In some models of garden tools, it can be supplemented with additional spigots, glands or filters. The principle of operation of a chainsaw carburetor is quite simple. At the moment the engine is started, the air damper, located at the bottom of the body, opens. In this case, in the float and air chambers, a vacuum is formed, caused by the movement of the piston. As a result, the regular diffuser is triggered, which begins to suck in air. The amount of air intake depends on how open the choke is. When the piston is actuated, fuel begins to flow into the chamber through the inlet fitting. Its flow rate and quantity depend on the position of the nozzles.

Later on the fuel in the air chamber begins to mix with the air. The ready-to-use fuel-air mixture then flows through the intake valves into the combustion chamber of the saw’s engine.

How to check the fuel filter on a chainsaw

Decrease in the capacity of the main fuel channel, causes undesirable consequences expressed in the reduction of power or complete stopping of the tool at higher rpm. These problems are a clear indication that the fuel filter is dirty. The more pronounced such malfunctions are, the more clogged the channel is.

It is not always possible to tell by visual inspection if it is dirty. The filter may look clean, but the inside is clogged with tiny particles and suspended particles. The cause of the malfunction can be determined experimentally by removing the filter and running the tool without it. If the operation is normal, then a new element must be installed.

If your chain saw is used regularly, every 5 days or so every 3 months, change the fuel filter. If the tool burns ≈5 liters of fuel in 1 day, then in 60 days it would be 300. For domestic saws, this figure can be divided by 2, because they are equipped with less reliable filters. Bottom line, in home/hobby use, replace every 150 liters or once a year.

Disassembling the STIHL 180 carburettor

To blow, change gaskets or needle valve, the carburetor must be disassembled. To do this, unscrew the 4 screws on the compensator cover and one on the fuel pump.

Once the housing is opened, you must be extremely careful because of the hazards involved. к. If debris gets inside the carburetor, it will make it impossible to operate. Thickness of channels in it is comparable to the thickness of a thread or even a human hair.
