How to assemble an active tiller for a diesel water cooled power tiller

The active tiller for the water-cooled Garden Scout GS81D(E)-GS101D(E)-12DE diesel power tillers, as well as for mini-tractors based on the power tiller, is supplied unassembled, unless otherwise specified in advance. The tiller is used for milling soil.

A person who has not experienced the assembly of a tiller is hard enough to quickly understand the assembly. The tiller assembly takes about 45 minutes, and we offer you the manual (instruction) with a photo which will help you to assemble your power tiller easily:

The first step in assembly is to install the blades into the appropriate mounts on the hub. Place the hubs with their sealing caps facing each other, and position the blades in such a way that the sharpened side of the blade penetrates into the ground as it rotates.

First we will install the blade that is closest to the anther (which is mounted on the gearbox). The sharpened part of the blade must face the movement of the cutter, and its curved part must face the gearbox.

Install the other blades in the same way as for the first one. Second step is to prepare the gearbox: put a stop on the bottom of the gearbox and fix it with bolts.

Also install the chain tightening screw, which is centered between the pillar and pinion.

Next, mount the hubs with blades on the gearbox. On the hub, next to the dust cap there is a fixing bolt that must align with the hole on the splined shaft of the gearbox.

Next, the stud bolts are inserted into the hubs and properly screwed into the gearbox shaft.

Stud bolts additionally fix hubs on gearbox shaft.

Fitting the undercarriage: On the undercarriage we mount and screw on the foot guard in the form of a mudguard. Screw the fixing beam to the shroud.

Put a cowl on the gearbox and screw it on.

An integral part of the tiller is the wheel with which the depth of cultivation is adjusted and the seat-adapter (if provided) is attached. Wheel fork is installed on the mounting beam of the tiller, on top of the fork is installed handle to adjust the height of the wheel.

Also, on the fork is mounted beam adapter and between the beam and the fork stretched adjustment spring, which does not allow the fork with the wheel to rotate freely, and returns it to the operating position.

After assembly of the active tiller it is necessary to screw the bolt of the chain stabilizer into the hole at the bottom of the gearbox, the bolt of M8 marking will do for this. That’s it, the device soil tiller (cultivator) is assembled. The machine can be connected to a power tiller.

What’s the best tillers for your power tiller?

Such “knives” for processing the soil can be divided into two large groups conditionally. Each of them has its own features and is suitable for a certain type of work.

Sabre-shaped cutter to a power tiller

The most popular and universal models, which are effective in carrying out various earthworks. These models use the optimal shape of blades, for which manufacturers choose high-quality, durable steel.

Models have a collapsible design, so their installation and maintenance is as simple as possible.

With a single-axle tractor and active power tiller, you can work a variety of soil types. Cutter, in this case affects such factors:

  • The final quality of the ploughed land;
  • How easy it is to control the tiller;
  • How efficiently the power unit works;
  • How reliable the transmission is.

Both factory-made and self-made cutters are the working organ of a power tiller when something needs to be plowed. Knives called “goose feet” are very common. They can be placed to loosen the soil, create a specific structure for a particular layer of soil. They can also destroy weeds right in the course of tillage of the arable soil, the main thing is not to forget to sharpen.

Keep in mind that the material that served as the basis for the blades installed on a single-axle tractor directly affects how good and deep the soil will be. If you don’t know how to make a good tiller or how to mount a tiller you’ve created on a single-axle tractor

It is generally believed that the attachment cutters for power tillers, created by forging with self-sharpening, are better than the others. You can build such a cutter yourself using pressed steel sheets as a base. Such power tillers have a cutting edge that needs to be sharpened.

Frequently Asked Questions About Single Axle Tractor Cutters

One of the most common questions is considered to be: “Do you have to sharpen tillers on a single-axle tractor??”The answer depends on what kind of blades you have and whether they can be self-sharpened. Also, the answer to this question depends on the type of soil with which you are going to work. If you plan to mainly till wet soil, it is recommended to additionally sharpen them with an angle grinder. The sharpening of power tillers is important and requires special attention.

Making goosefoot tillers

Cutters of this type have been in widespread use since the mid-1980s. This was due to the development of home-built small mechanization at the time. Since then, until now, this design has fully proven its right to exist. Structurally, this module can be divided into several basic elements, which are manufactured individually and have different functionality.

Drive bush

It is advisable to start the production of the tiller with this element. Since the bushing is exposed to high loads, it is made on a lathe with a wall thickness of at least 5 mm, optimally 7-8 mm. The inner hole on one side is counterbored so that the mill is free to slide onto the shaft without any excessive play, a tolerance of about 0.5 mm.

On the other side there is a 30-40 mm deep counterbore for the axial tube. This will allow you to get an axially aligned connection without any problems. A hole is drilled for the fixing pin.

Axial tube with flanges

This element is available as a dismountable or non-dismountable version. But there is one peculiarity in favor of collapsible variant. possibility to install additional blade block or vice versa. How the cutter will behave is only definitively clarified after the test, and, as is often the case with self-made models, the result does not always meet expectations. Standard pipes Æ25-32 mm are used for manufacturing.

In the case of the demountable variant it is necessary to mill connecting sleeves, which are half-inserted into the axial tube and fastened through the holes by rivets or electric welding. The protruding part will serve as a connection for a similar element.

A flange is welded to the axial tube to support the blade supports. It can be turned on a lathe, or it can be made from metal strips at least 5 mm thick.

Holes are drilled in the flange for bolt or rivet connections with the legs. Connection of this element by electric welding is undesirable because of high loads.

install, blades, tiller, power

Tube length depends on the location and width of the cutting elements. Number of blanks should correspond to the number of knife blocks. Two blocks are made with drive sleeves.

Cutting element (knife)

Made of strong non-brittle steel of 65-70G type, 3-5mm thick. The triangular shape of the blade is thought to be optimal for low resistance when penetrating the ground.

install, blades, tiller, power

often, homebuilders use a triangular cutterbar as the blade of a segment mower. As mower blade and segment steel have different compositions, welding must be carried out after tempering and hardening. Cutters with such blades are used on clean surfaces. For heavy, virgin soils it is recommended to make the cutting elements of a thicker steel, which allows making a quality weld.

Practice shows that the optimum width of the blades is 50-80mm. Larger sizes produce more resistance to the ground.

Cutting element stand

The same steel is best used for knives, but stronger, alloyed steels with a lower performance can also be used.

The goosefoot stand is made of straight or ribbed strip. It is advisable to sharpen the edge that comes into direct contact with the ground.

Holes are drilled in the stand to attach it to the flange of the centerline pipe. Cutting elements are welded with subsequent hardening.

Knife block

After connecting the counter blades and the axial tubes, you get an interchangeable modular cutting element. Only two blocks with welded drive bushings remain individual.

With the appropriate skills and availability of the necessary equipment manufacturing of this element will not be a big difficulty. To avoid material deterioration and to avoid unnecessary bodily movements, it is desirable to make a detailed drawing before fabrication or use a ready-made one.

Cutters for power tillers, features of use

Motocultivator model Neva, as well as other analogues of such equipment, structurally consists of an internal combustion engine, which is mounted on a frame made of metal, equipped with two wheels. The handle of the Neva power tiller is equipped with buttons to control the unit and attachments.

single-axle tractor with an active tiller has a frame with a mounted trailing device. The trailed equipment of a power tiller is attached to the trailed unit of a Neva unit.

Soil cultivation is performed with the help of tillers for power tillers. Cutters for the Neva power tiller affect:

  • quality of plowing;
  • ease of operation of the machine during tillage;
  • reliability of the unit transmission;
  • effectiveness of the power unit of the cultivator.

Homemade and factory cutters for the power tiller (knives) are presented as the main working organ of the unit. Knives of the type “goose-foot” are designed to:

  • loosening of soil layers;
  • create a certain structure of the cultivated layer of soil;
  • Machines in the trailed implement have a front attachment for cutting and controlling weeds during tillage.

You can assemble the tiller to the tiller with your own hands, having at hand a minimal set of tools. Goose-foot blades are the most common variant of a cutter on a single-axle tractor.

Other varieties of tillers for power tillers can vary significantly in their shape and device. Cutters for a single-axle tractor in the “houndstooth” modification differ from their analogues in the number of cutting edges, their location and design.

Cutters for power tillers are considered the most important component of this machine, and the material from which they are made, directly affects such indicators as the depth and quality of processing the soil layer.

This attachment can be assembled independently, but it should be remembered that the highest quality cutters for power tillers are those that are made by forging with self-sharpening.

You can assemble a power tiller to a single-axle tractor using pressed metal sheets. Such tillers for a power tiller will have an implicit cutting edge. In most cases, from stamped metal sheets are assembled cutters for power tillers of the “goose feet” type.

Cutters for a single-axle tractor

Such equipment as a tiller is essential for any power tiller, as it can be used to perform most of the work associated with tillage. Basically, the tiller comes with the machine, but if you need to change the width and depth of cultivation, you should buy the equipment separately.

Additional tillers allow to increase a power tiller’s functionality and simplify its operation. Specialists recommend having several pairs of cutters in your arsenal.
