How to cut a baguette for stretch ceilings

How to file the baguette for stretch ceilings: expert recommendations

Stretch ceilings have firmly come into our lives, replacing many other finishes. They attract not only unlimited design possibilities, but also the ease and speed of installation. Many people are attracted by this finish because it hides not only the imperfect base ceiling, but also all the wiring and other communications.

Stretch ceilings will decorate any dwelling, but their service life largely depends on the professionalism of installation. To fix the fabric or PVC-film on the surface, you need a special baguette for stretch ceilings. Each material needs its own configuration of fastening, and in this article we are just about it and tell. It is also important to know the nuances of the correct installation of decorative baguettes, so as not to damage the ceiling structure.

Preparing

First of all, let’s define, what of the tools we need for mounting baguettes.

  • Peorator
  • electric screwdriver
  • hammer
  • hacksaw
  • masking cord
  • ladder
  • self-tapping screws and dowels, a 6-mm drill bit and a 6-mm drill bit

Let’s prepare the room. To do this, we need to clear all the space around the perimeter of the room to a distance of 1 meter from the walls. In the room should not remain any plants and pets. All furniture, which could not be taken out, should be covered with a special covering material. Also, that it would be convenient to mount the baguette, we need to prepare it: to drill holes for dowels. The distance between the holes should not exceed 15 cm, and the indentation at the ends of the whip from the edge should not be more than 2 cm. It is not recommended to make a larger distance, as the profile will begin to pull away and bend in the areas between the fasteners. Plastic baguette is drilled into a special stiffener, if you look from the end, it looks like a cube. And the aluminum one. in a special shelf. The photo shows how to prepare the profiles for installation.

When preparing the room, it is worth taking into account another important point: where in the walls runs the electrical cable. This is especially true for brick houses of Khrushchev construction. Need to be guided by the boxes on the wall, sockets, switches. In most cases, the wire runs at the level of junction boxes and is lowered vertically above each socket or switch. Location of wires should be taken into account even at the stage of measuring of the leaf.

Stretch fabrics can be found more and more often in modern interiors of residential and office space. Traditionally, when selecting materials for the erection of such ceiling structures, much attention is paid to the coatings. However, a good frame is no less important in creating a beautiful, even and reliable decorative surface. Deciding to perform independent installation of such a system, many at first encounter various difficulties, for example, not knowing which side to fix the baguette for stretch ceilings. In this article we will describe the main types of these elements of the framework, as well as discuss the technology for installing the profile, depending on the material, type of coating and wall condition. Asta M company presents a revolutionary profile of the new generation. kraab profile. This baguette allows the installation of stretch ceilings harpoon method for seamless technology. You can buy such profile in our online store by following the link.

To mark the plane of attachment of the baguette use a special device. a laser level. The normal height for mounting is a distance from the ceiling of at least 5cm. This way you will not hit any technical joints in the wall. Firmly fix the laser level and mark each corner of the room. Choose a place for laying the level from which you can see all the nooks and crannies. If the room is intricately shaped and it is not possible to mark all the corners from one place, once you have marked all the available marks, you can move the level further, focusing on the already existing drawings.

If you do not have a laser level, do not feel bad. You can use a hydro-level. Such marking will take more time, but the result will be quite accurate. Fill the level with water at room temperature without allowing air to enter the hose. Align the two flasks for checking. the water line should line up in one plane in both flasks. Important: do not use hot or cold water, it must be as close to the room temperature as possible. Also do not allow the hose to bend, it is fraught with large errors in the readings. The technology of marking is as follows. One installer stands in the first corner, the other installer stands in the second corner. Fix both flasks in the corners with one hand and put marks on the boundary of the water in the flask with the other hand. After that, the first installer moves to the next unmarked corner, and the second remains in place. Then the first installer approximately places the flask at the corner, and the second installer, lowering or raising his side, makes the water border match his mark. When the oscillations stop, the first one makes his mark. The procedure is repeated with all corners. Then we take a tape measure and measure all the distances from the marks to the ceiling. From the smallest subtract 5cm. this will be the total height. After that mark from each marker measure this value up and put the final marking.

Now from one marker to the other we need to draw a straight line. it will be the plane of our stretch ceiling. For this we use a painting cord. Hold one end of the thread on one mark, the other end on the other. Snap pull it and release, from the click on the wall will remain an even line for the trimmer. And so on in a circle.

Baguettes for the harpoon method of fastening

Ceiling baguettes used for harpoon mounting of tension cloths are made of aluminum or plastic. This method is more expensive than others, but deservedly enjoys high demand. Baguettes for foil PVC ceilings are flexible enough, and if necessary can repeat the contour of the ceiling.

To properly install any type of ceiling profile, the surface of the rough must be absolutely flat, because the cloth stretched in the same plane in which the mounting accessories.

The harpoon version of the mounting of the baguette for stretch ceilings is considered the most reliable among all methods. This is because the harpoon-shaped latch, located at the edge of the leaf, is fixed as firmly as possible. When the material is stretched, it will not pop out of the baguette and will not loosen.

The latch has one part that moves like a spring. In the process of entering the groove of the profile, it is squeezed, and after passing the protrusion, it opens again and again clings to the protrusion.

Such stretch ceiling structures can be dismantled if necessary. To do this, a putty knife presses the springy part of the harpoon and gradually pulls it out of the groove along the entire perimeter. The PVC sheet will not be damaged at all.

The main disadvantage of this method of attachment is considered a long installation and there is an explanation. The fact that the cloth is cut according to the size and configuration of the room. Then a harpoon is soldered along its perimeter. The fabric is sewn in the factory.

It takes time for the master to make a measurement, send the data to the factory where the fastener is soldered, and send the order to the addressee. Preparing the installation of plastic or aluminum baguettes for stretch ceilings using the harpoon method. Despite the fact that such design costs a lot, but its service life is much longer.

There are several types of baguettes, and in this case I used PVC baguette. When assembling, align the bottom of the baguette with the line obtained in the previous step.

Mounting the baguette around the perimeter of the ceiling

The following rules must be adhered to:

  • Baguette must be fastened securely, it is advisable to twist self-tapping screws in all the holes available in the profile;
  • The junction of adjacent baguette strips should be even, without differences.

To avoid damaging the stretched fabric canvas when mounting, it is advisable to stick the baguette joints with adhesive tape

Also when installing a PVC baguette the question arises. what side of the profile should adhere to the wall? Install the baguette should be as shown in the figure below:

Installing the baguette in corners

In my case, the mounting area has four inside corners, so the baguette is trimmed as shown in the photo below:

Fixing the baguette

In my case, two sides of the baguette is mounted to a concrete wall, and two more to the step of the plasterboard and profiles (the scheme below):

When fixing to a concrete wall, we use a torch, screwdriver, self-tapping screws and dowels.

The question arises right away. what fasteners to choose for the baguettes

Baguette fasteners (dowel 6×40 mm and self-tapping screw 3.5×45 mm) The technology is simple: we drill a hole in the wall through the hole in the profile (baguette), then install a plastic dowel and screw a screwdriver into it.

In the place where I have mounted a step from the gypsum board, I pre-built a metal profile, as shown in the photo below:

Additional metal profile in the step of the plasterboard

To fix the baguette to the drywall and plasterboard steps, use screwdriver and self-tapping metal screws about 30 mm long.

When securing the baguettes to the plasterboard, it is very important to install embedded parts or use special fasteners.

In general, there is nothing difficult about installing a ceiling baguette. You can go to the next step.

Types of ceiling baguettes

There are situations when it is impossible to screw into the wall at the level of the suspension structure. Usually there are two reasons. it is hidden utilities, such as electrical wiring, or a weak layer of plaster.

In such cases, use the ceiling baguette for suspended ceilings. For the arrangement of such ceiling structures requires high-quality textile or PVC canvas and accessories designed to hold it. This set includes two types of fastening profile. wall and ceiling.

There are three options for fixing the baguette for different methods of fixing the leaf:

Aluminum construction

They have a lot of weight and are considered the most durable and reliable. The differences lie in the design of the profile, which has a U-shaped basic part and an additional ledge.

In the latter it is necessary to drill holes at a pitch of about 20 cm, and then attach the worked out fragment to the surface and mark on the pre-drawn line. On them with a pen make holes, where subsequently screw in self-tapping screws to fix the frame.

Take into account the peculiarity of this variant. they are used for direct installation and are installed in one piece, so that there are no problems with the docking of the fragments.

Mounting the frame for a suspended ceiling

Consider the installation of the most common type of profile. wall with harpoon mounting system. In general, the technology of installation of plastic and aluminum baguette is the same. In some moments there are differences, we will definitely explain them. The process includes three main steps: marking, fixing the baguette and processing the joints. Let’s consider each of them in more detail.

Marking

At this stage it is convenient to use a laser level. The tool is set so that all the nooks are shot through. Sometimes this is not possible due to the complex configuration of the room. Then the leveler is transferred and new marks are put, focusing on the old ones.

  • First you need to determine the height of the walls, and to do this. to measure from floor to ceiling in each corner.
  • From the lowest one the necessary distance is marked off. The minimum. 5 cm, when installing recessed lighting fixtures or large differences in height the future ceiling can drop by 10-15 cm.
  • Next make a mark on the same level in all corners.
  • Then it is necessary to draw lines along the walls. For this, it is convenient to use a painting cord. The ends are held near the marks, the rope is pulled away and released sharply. On the wall will remain an even line for the trimmer.
  • Fill the bubble level with water, being careful not to let any air get into the hose.
  • To verify the alignment of the flasks. the liquid must be at the same level.
  • Then one of them is held so that the boundary of water and air is located near the mark.
  • The second bulb is placed against the other wall, lowering and lifting until the liquid is at the same level. When the oscillations stop, make the mark.
  • The procedure is repeated for all corners. Marking is done in the same way as with a laser level.

Attention! The water in the water level must not be too cold or hot, room temperature is best.

Fastening of the baguette

Installation begins with a corner, and with the most difficult or inaccessible. The profile is never butted in such places. When stretching the ceiling, the strongest load is in the corners, and at the joint the canvas will eventually tear.

First, holes are made in the profile, and then screwed to the wall, as it is inconvenient to drill on the weight. PVC baguettes are drilled into the stiffening rib, and aluminum ones. into the shelf.

Fixing step. from 10 to 15 cm, with a rarer plastic profile will bend from the force of the tension. The aluminum baguette has greater rigidity, so the distance can be increased to 20 cm. Also on sale is a peorized profile with ready-made holes for mounting.

The following profile is attached to the corner and mounted butt to butt. The wall is drilled through the pre-drilled holes and fasteners are installed. Sometimes first put the marks through the holes in the profile, then drill and insert dowels, and then put the baguette back and screws.

Installing the frame for the stretch ceiling, it is important to fit the connection horizontally as well as possible. The level helps to achieve this.

Installing the baguette in the corners

To install the inner corner of the stretch ceiling, you must first prepare the profile, and only then mount. The technology is as follows:

  • Measure the place of the bend and put a mark on the back side of the baguette.
  • Sawed down the back wall of the profile so that the front remains untouched.
  • Bend and fasten to the wall.
  • Mark the place of the fold.
  • After 1 cm on each side, make two notches (t. е. between them will be 2 cm).
  • Remove the remainder of the profile between the cuts. Cut out the excess of the plastic baguette with a construction knife, from aluminum. remove with pliers.
  • Then it is necessary to bend a skeleton so that the sawed out area appeared inside.
  • Unwrap the baguette with its back side facing you, so that the groove for the foil is at the bottom.
  • Applied to the wall along the line with an overlap with the already fixed profile, set the end flush with the corner.
  • At the intersection of the two baguettes a mark is put: in this place it will be necessary to bend the profile.

This method is faster and more accurate.

The correct joining of the profile

This is an important point, which determines the longevity of the ceiling, let’s dwell on it in detail. Baguettes must be attached closely to one another, without gaps and overlaps. At the joints, it is important to observe the horizontal.

The joints must be glued to prevent sharp edges from damaging the fabric. For aluminum profile use metallized tape, and for plastic. masking tape or household tape.

The nuances of attaching baguettes to different surfaces

The method described above is used for solid walls. brick or concrete. Mounting the baguette for a stretch ceiling to other structures has certain features and is more complicated.

baguette, stretch, ceilings

Loose walls

Such materials include, for example, aerated concrete or limestone. Self-tapping screws hold worse, so additional fixation is required. To reinforce screw several screws into one hole or put spacers.

For the second option, you will need baguette trimmings. The length depends on the distance between the attachment point and the rough ceiling.

Installation of spacers is performed as follows:

  • On one end of the profile drill a hole for a screw.
  • A slope resting against the ceiling and baguette.
  • Make a mark in the upper slab and drive a dowel.
  • Fasten the spacer to the ceiling and wall baguette, reinforcing the framework.

Important! The profile must not wiggle up and down or come off. It is necessary that the spacers tightly pressed the baguette to the wall.

Tile

This method of finishing is often chosen for bathrooms and toilets. Baguette for a stretch ceiling can be attached under the following conditions:

  • The tiles are laid evenly without big differences;
  • The material holds firmly, there are no voids;
  • Preferably a high quality tile (then minimize the likelihood of chipping).

Sometimes a tile or porcelain tile is laid only to the intended ceiling level. Then the wall above must be closed with plasterboard or put mortar.

To make a hole in the tile, without breaking the tiles, you’ll need a special drill. lance-shaped and sharply honed. Pobedite or tungsten carbide are suitable. The tiles are drilled at low speed. When the ceramic layer is passed, the drill bit is changed to a suitable one for the main wall (e.g. concrete).

Tip! Put a piece of paper adhesive tape over the marking on the future fixing point. Then the drill does not go sideways and the surface is not scratched or chipped.

It is advisable to use a stiffer aluminum profile. It allows you to make fastenings less often. This reduces the possibility of damaging the ceramic tiles. In the rest, the installation of the baguette for stretch ceilings takes place as usual.

Wood

Houses made of this material are often built in the private sector. Bearing structures can be hidden under a thick layer of plaster. To screw the frame, you need to have long screws (75, 90 or even 110 mm). There is another difference: self-tapping screws are screwed directly into the wood, dowels are not needed.

Drywall

With the help of GPB often align walls and erect lightweight non-load-bearing partitions. But cardboard and plaster are unstable materials. If the installation of stretch ceilings has been thought out in advance, the question is easily resolved. It is sufficient to nail under the drywall embedding strip for fastening (from metal profile or bar). The screws are screwed into it.

If the installation of the suspended ceiling was not planned, the profile has to be mounted in gypsum plasterboard. Then the screws are screwed in more often (with a pitch of 8 cm) and “herringbone”, that is, at an angle in opposite directions.

When installing the framework for stretch ceilings with your own hands, it is important to observe accuracy and care. It is also necessary to take into account the material of the walls. brick, foam block, wood and others, and when choosing a profile be sure to focus on the type of fabric and the area of the room.

Baguettes for cam mounts

Installation of stretch ceilings using this method is considered the most unpretentious. After completion of such a baguette does not need to be covered with a decorative bar, and the cloth in it is not difficult to install. It has a fixture on it that consists of a fixed and a movable cam. These elements are designed to hold the film in place.

baguette, stretch, ceilings

When the fabric is placed between the cams, it pulls one of the cams, the moving one, away. As a result, it begins to press harder and harder against the fixed element, fixing the polyvinylchloride material even more firmly.

But this method of attachment does not provide sufficient rigidity, so experts do not advise installing cam baguettes on the surface, the area of which exceeds 20 “squares”, because at larger sizes on the surface will collect wrinkles.

If deciding how to mount the baguette for stretch ceilings, the cam method is chosen, the bar must be further strengthened. You can use an overhead chandelier for this, for it a console is mounted in the ceiling groove beforehand. The use of a baguette does not mean that you should not use a decorative skirting. Such product of foam or plastic in the form of an elegant trim will be a wonderful addition to the suspended ceiling construction.

Varieties of ceiling ties

Before correctly selecting the right galleys to the suspended ceiling, let’s understand what kinds exist and will fit to a particular suspended structure. The material from which the baguette is made, can be varied:

To decorate suspended ceilings, choose lightweight fillets, because, as noted above, it is correct to glue them only on the walls. If you are attracted to stucco, do not choose plaster decorations, look for polyurethane imitation of the plaster. Painted corbels from a distance of 2 meters can not be distinguished from the plaster.

Cost-effective are pressed foam products, but when choosing them, remember that you may be faced with drying of the tape over time, and the joints will be visible.

Plastic ceiling baguette

The baguette also differs in appearance and may vary:

The variety of appearance and sizes of baguettes allows you to correctly match the style, which decorates the room. Pay attention, how does the joint with a stretched cloth look like? If the walls are flat, and the line for the trimmer contact does not require masking, glue a flat baguette or an element with a wide wall part. Sometimes in such situations, simply place the molding under the stretched cloth. By length it is better to choose a baguette so that the joints were as little as possible. Therefore, before going to the store, it is recommended to carefully measure the size of the room.

In construction stores you can find suitable corners for joining baguettes at the junction of the two planes. Gluing the corner between the sections of the baguette, you simplify and speed up the work on the joint at right angles.

Special corners make joining easier

Important! Buying the baguette, calculate its length with a decent margin (20-25%), as matching and joining forces trim the material, and there are unsuitable pieces.

Baguettes for cam fastening

Installation of stretch ceilings with this method is considered the most unpretentious. After completion of such a baguette does not need to cover the decorative bar, and the cloth in it is easy to install. There is a fixture on it that consists of a fixed and a movable cam. These elements are designed to secure the film.

When the cloth is placed between the cams, it pulls one of them. the movable one. As a result, it begins to press against the static element, even more firmly holding the PVC material.

But this method of attachment does not provide sufficient rigidity, so experts do not advise to install cam baguettes on the surface, the area of which exceeds 20 “squares”, since at larger sizes on the surface will be collected wrinkles.

If deciding how to mount the baguette for stretch ceilings, the cam method is chosen, the bar must be further strengthened. For this you can use a trimmed chandelier, for it in the ceiling groove pre-mounted cantilever. Using a baguette does not mean that it is not necessary to use a decorative skirting board. Such a product made of foam or plastic in the form of an elegant edging will be an excellent addition to the stretch ceiling construction.

How to fix the baguette for a suspended ceiling?

Profile fixing is one of the most important and critical processes in the installation of the stretch ceiling. With quality and durable installation, the construction will last for many years and does not succumb to deformation: the canvas will not sag, the profile itself will not break. But the appearance of the ceiling also depends on the fixing of the baguette, with different types of profiles a special result is obtained. For example, when using an invisible profile (profile for the harpoon and staple methods) gaps that remain between the wall and the canvas should be additionally masked with a skirting board or decorative tape. If you fix a visible profile (clothespin profile), you should be very careful not to damage it, because it also serves as a decorative skirting board. One must be careful with the corners when sawing, because the appearance of the suspended ceiling depends on it.

Profile installation

The first thing to do is to prepare for the installation of the baguette and the tensioned canvas:

  • Need to free the room from furniture, plants and other items. At a distance of 1 meter from the wall must not be anything, because it will interfere with the installation. If any furniture or other furnishings can not be removed from the room, they should be covered with protective material.
  • To speed up the process of installation, you should drill holes in the profile or buy pre-drilled profile. Remember that the plastic baguette is drilled into the square rib, and the metal one into the panel.
  • Next, you should mark the perimeter of the room line for the trimmer, which will be equal to the profile. This should be done with the help of a level.

Before you start installing, it does not hurt to look around the room and find out where there is a large concentration of wires, loose walls, and so on.

Notching the corners on the baguette

Begin assembling the profile should begin with the most inaccessible corner, for this you need to make a sawing of the inner and outer corners of the baguette of stretch ceilings:

  • Turn the profile with its back side against the wall and at a distance of 1 cm from the corner draw a trimmer line on the profile. Then make a neat notch rear wall of the profile, without damaging the front wall of the baguette, carefully bend it to the shape of the angle. the inside corner is ready.
  • To make the outer corners of the baguettes for stretch ceilings you need to attach the profile to the wall, and at a distance of 2 cm from the corner to draw a straight line for a trimmer, in this place will be the first notch. Then at the junction of the baguette with a corner wall also need to draw a line for a trimmer, so these two marks will be parallel, and are 2 cm apart. Now you need to saw out this part and carefully remove with pliers, then bend the profile. the outer corner is ready.
  • Using the baguette on the curved sections of the wall, on the back side of the profile to make a few parallel notches at the same distance and carefully bend into shape. On the sawed-off part of the profile you need to install a nipple.
  • After mounting the baguette in the corners of the room, you should put a tape on the joints, thus having treated them. It is most convenient to make notches with a hacksaw.

Profile mounting tips

On the loose surface of the wall to screw several screws in one section of the profile, thus increasing the strength of attachment. As an option to solve this problem, you can reinforce the baguette corners or make it stop. To avoid condensation between the fixed ceiling and the stretch ceiling, it is necessary to drill holes in the profile, which will serve as ventilation. On the curvilinear sections of the wall it is most convenient to use plastic baguettes, because they not only bend well, but also fit tightly to the wall. If you’re not confident in your abilities and are worried that you can not cope with the installation of the profile, it’s better to entrust this matter to professionals. They will make everything even and of high quality, and you can not worry about the fact that the outer corners of the baguette of stretch ceilings will be sloppy, and the canvas will sag over time. The main thing is not to save on a master and materials, and to give preference to a firm that has been providing its products and services for many years.
