How to cut an outside corner on a ceiling

How to make a mortise without the help of experts

If you do not have a joiner, but you know that you can use it to prepare perfect corners, then make this device with your own hands.

Make a small U-shaped tray with cuts that form the necessary corners for your task. The main thing. do not hurry, carefully check your cuts (preferably with a protractor) and take care that your construction was stable.

If you know how to cut the corner of the ceiling plinth, but for this you need a device that allows you to cut non-standard corners on the fillets (another name for baseboards), make the right tool with your own hands.

To do this, you need to connect two rectangular boards in a “G” shape, and make cuts on one of them. On paper, using a protractor, you need to draw a scythe line so that they form the necessary angles with one of the boards. The device is ready, all that is left is to test its functionality in practice.

In a pinch, you can always find some thing that will help you cut part of the baseboard at the right angle (a book, a table pushed against the wall, etc.д.).

Important point! Making measurements, take into account that for the outer corner of the ceiling plinth need to take a reserve equal to its width (fillets, in this case stick out).

Correct cutting of the corner

Formation of corners when installing a skirting with a complex surface is not an easy task. Not only need to cut the two parts at the junction, but also to eliminate gaps. There are several solutions to the problem: how to cut the corner of the ceiling plinth perfectly. These are the following methods. The use of the tool is appropriate in the case of even corners and walls in the room, when the standard corner does not need to adjust to the complex geometry of the uneven wall. How to cut corners without a joiner? There are several ways, for example, to make a geometric marking of the corner on paper (cardboard), including the exact thickness of the baseboard. Draw the middle line of the corner (at an angle of 90 degrees on a mowing line of 45 degrees). Place the baseboard piece on the marking and cut with a sharp knife (saw) along the center line of the angle (bisecting line). Do not press too hard so as not to crumble the material and avoid snags.

Trimming a skirting board with a skirting tool proceeds as follows.

Fix the skirting board to the bottom of the plinthole in the position it will occupy on the ceiling, press it firmly against it. 2. Using a notch, going at the right angle, cut it. For solid material, you need a good hacksaw, preferably one that can handle metal (saw). A sharp kitchen knife is good for foam plastic, but it can cause the material to crumble. 3. If the baseboard material is hard, trim the cut edges with a file.

When cutting the corners of a ceiling plinth for the first time, it is recommended to practice on pieces of material. Experienced masters do not use auxiliary tools at all, but simply attach the baseboard to the wall and on it marks the necessary scythe line. Then cut off the excess material.

How to cut a baseboard with a wire cutter

The wire cutter is a three-sided box made of wood, metal or plastic with two vertical sides with 90 and 45 degree angled through slots. The junction of the wall and ceiling: how to choose the right ceiling skirting). With the help of a wire cutter is easily made trimming ceiling plinths to join straight sections and design the right right right angles.

Interior corners

In a standard rectangular room, all corners are interior. The baseboard gluing begins with them, so that you can ignore the length fitting as well.

Tip. Before you cut the ceiling baseboard, decide which side it will be adjacent to the wall, and which side. to the ceiling. This depends on the relief of the product and its profile. If the baseboard is not symmetrical, then the wider shelf is attached to the wall.

Proper installation of the ceiling plinth

  • To cut the left corner, set the skirting board in the jig so that its longest part was on your left, and the one that will be cut. in the jig itself, with a small overlap on the right-hand kerf at 45 degrees (see skirting boards on the left). Styrofoam ceiling mouldings: cheap, smart, and also very pretty).
  • The part of the baseboard that will be glued to the ceiling, press to the bottom of the cutter, and the one that is on the wall. press to the side closest to you.
  • Holding the skirting board firmly in this position, cut the corner through the slit with a hacksaw or construction knife.

How to cut a ceiling moulding for the left side of the inside corner

After trimming the corners of both baseboards, press them into the corner without glue yet, to make sure the cuts match. If they don’t, trim them with a construction knife. The skirting boards can then be glued in place.

Tip. Experienced finishers advise beginners to first fit and glue the skirting boards in all corners, and then already glue straight sections between them.

Outer corners

Outer corners are found in rooms with inner recesses or niches (see skirting and corner moulding). How to make the corner of the ceiling plinth: recommendations from the masters). If you do not know how to cut the ceiling skirting boards in this case, we hasten to reassure you. It is done in the same way as in the previous case, with the only difference that the left skirting board is cut through the left, not the right slot of the wood chisel. That is, at a different angle.

As a result, the part of the baseboard that will be adjacent to the ceiling will be longer.

Proceed in the same way for the right-hand skirting board: insert it in the mortise from the right, pressing it to the bottom and side wall and cut through the right-hand slot.

Attention! Gluing the skirting board to the outer corner, make sure that the edge of its lower part exactly coincided with the edge of the wall corner. If there are still questions, be sure to watch the detailed video at the end of the article.

The correct solution is to cut the outer and inner corner with a wire cutter

You may get the impression that the fillet should simply be trimmed at an angle of 45º and glued in place. However, acting in this way, you can make up to three mistakes:

If there is even one omission, the joint between the two fillets will have unacceptable gaps and crevices. The use of a simple and inexpensive tool called a wire cutter solves all problems.

The standard version allows you to cut at 30º, 45º, 60º, and 90º angles, so you can evenly cut inside and outside corners, and evenly butt joints between pieces of filing. For cutting materials such as Styrofoam, you can use a pistol knife with a blade width of 18 mm, to work with wood baseboard and other materials suitable hacksaw for metal.

The inner corner in the rooms is much more common, so with him and start to act on the following plan:

  • First it is necessary to mark the length of the baseboard by applying it to the wall in the appropriate place. If it is impossible, it will be necessary to use a tape measure. The mark is applied with a pencil, and so that it did not remain on the tack after trimming.
  • Place the workpiece in the jig so that it is in the operating position. The edge of the baseboard, which will be on the wall, should be at the top, and the side that is supposed to be on the ceiling, hits the bottom of the jigsaw.
  • Now we put the hacksaw into the guides at an angle of 45º so that after cutting the edge on the ceiling was shorter than the edge on the wall. Press the workpiece to the mitre with your left hand and carefully cut the corner piece, trying not to chamfer the material.
  • In the same way we cut the second part of the corner along the guide, located at 90º to the previous cut. To do this, place the workpiece on the opposite side of the jig.
  • Try to connect the parts on the spot. If there is a gap, correct it with a file or knife.
  • If the skirting has a coloured surface, the place where the cut is made must be painted with the same color, otherwise the joint will be visible. Finishing tape can be glued in place.

The outer corner is cut in a similar way, but if the same piece has both types of corners, the inner one is cut first. Proceed as follows:

  • When marking the outer joint, note that the part will be longer by the width of the baseboard.
  • The workpiece is placed in the chair so that it is in the working position. The edge of the baseboard, which will be on the wall, should be at the top, and the side that is supposed to be on the ceiling, falls to the bottom of the chair.
  • Now we put the hacksaw into the guides at an angle of 45º so that after cutting the edge on the ceiling was longer than the edge on the wall. Press the workpiece with his left hand to the jig and carefully cut the tack, taking care to avoid chipping the material.

Then follow the same operations as in the construction of the internal joint. Unfortunately, it sometimes happens that the angles in the room are not equal to 90º, and the joints are obtained with gaps.

In this case, the problem is solved by a professional saw with a jig saw, which allows you to properly cut the part at any angle. If it is not available, the angle of the cut can be corrected by installing spacers between the fillet and the chair. In this case, the thickness of the gasket should be greater than the compensated gap as many times the distance from the gasket to the place of the cut is greater than the width of the baseboard.

What masters advise

To make the work carried out to please both the people living in this apartment, and their guests, the repairs should be carried out with the utmost accuracy.

A few tips from professionals in the field of cosmetic finishing:

  • the material from which the bumpers are made: polyurethane, wood, metal. The most convenient for the work, is considered polyurethane. it is fixed with a sealant, not subject to changes in humidity and temperature, easier to handle;
  • Polyurethane fillets, or as they are called “foam,” is better to cut with a box cutter;
  • It is better to cut wooden skirting boards with a metal file, not with a hacksaw, as this will allow you to cut the product with fewer chips;
  • Begin gluing or fixing the strips, on the ceiling or floor should begin with the corners. After all the corners in the room will be decorated, it is necessary to move on to the installation of baseboards in the intercorner spaces;

On products made of wood, there may be small cracks and chips. Defects must be covered with sealant or putty to match the color of the product.

How to cut the corner on the ceiling plinth with a plasterboard

Corners on the ceiling are divided into internal and external, with the latter often cause problems. How to mark them has already been given above. Now it’s turn for the cutting.

To make the skirting board for the inside corner, the plank is installed in the chair, just as it was located on the ceiling. Press the baseboard firmly against the wall of the mortise and with your free hand place the hacksaw in the hole at a 45° angle and cut. Another part is installed in the same way, only mirrored. Tacks for the outer corner are made identically, only the marking on the baseboard will be on the other side.

You can make an imitation of a jig by yourself, using improvised materials. Take a piece of plywood or board and draw a rectangle on it and on its sides mark 45 °, connect the opposite lines. According to this template, you can cut the baseboards as above, only it is necessary not to insert them into special holes, but to place them on the lines.

How to get the right angle ceiling plinth

Many problems when working with ceiling plinths arise in the design of corners. Since the surface of the products is complex, just cut at the right angle will not work: trim so that they docked and preferably. without large gaps. In fact, there are several ways to make the corner of the ceiling plinth ideal, well, or almost ideal.

When the corners and walls in the room are even, you can use a special joiner’s tool, the joiner’s plier. Chisel, this is a groove in the shape of an inverted “U”, inside of which, are outlined scythe fishing line to cut at 90° and 45° angle. Put the part inside, in which you want to make a notch, and insert the saw into the guides. The part is held in place, cut at the desired angle.

The chair can be made of wood, plastic or metal

In the case of skirting boards, it is not so simple: they must simultaneously adhere to two surfaces, so they must be pressed to one or the other wall of the jigsaw. When working with the ceiling, they are pressed to the side closest to you.

Sequence of operations when finishing the outer corner

It is necessary to make a cut at an angle of 45 degrees. Place the chisel in front of you. Try on how the skirting board will be positioned, determining which part will be fastened to the ceiling. To avoid confusion and to cut the ceiling skirting boards correctly, you put the board that will be located on the right, and the one on the left. on the left.

The correct positioning of the skirting boards in the jigsaw

The part that ends up on the ceiling, pressed to the bottom of the chair. The second side is closer to you and raised. It rests on the wall of the jigsaw so it won’t wobble when you saw it. That is, the front part of the skirting board turns away from you. The direction of the kerf is as shown in the photo below. Putting the two cut parts together, you get the protruding. outer or outer corner.

Saw a cut line for the outside corner of the ceiling plinth

You put the sawn off parts in place “dry” first, without applying glue. If the geometry of the corner was not ideal, you can correct it with a utility knife. Small errors are easier to putty with a special putty.

Sequence of operations when finishing an inner corner

First, try on what side will be on the ceiling, this part pressed to the bottom of the cutter, the second part resting on the wall closest to you and make notches as shown in the photo below.

The mowing line of the cut for the inside corner of the ceiling plinth

And in the same way as when working on the sawing of the outer corner, first try on without applying glue, if necessary, slightly adjust. Then apply a thin strip of glue to both surfaces that will be glued to the wall or ceiling.

Corner of a ceiling plinth without a joiner

In apartments or houses, there aren’t always exactly 90° corners. Small deviations can easily be corrected after fitting. But not always. Then you have to mark everything “in place”. that is, under the ceiling.

You will need a thinly outlined pencil (hard. it is not as visible on the ceiling, but near leaves fairly clear marks), a small piece of baseboard, a ruler and a good office knife if you work with polyurethane (polystyrene) baguettes or a metal saw to work with other materials.Place the skirting board to the corner, pencil along the outer edge. Apply to the other side of the corner, and also mark. You get on the ceiling cross, the center of which marks the point where the ceiling plinth trim should converge (see photo). Having established in a corner a section of a plinth which there will be glued and having set its end against a wall, we transfer a mark on it.

Mark on the ceiling the place where the skirting boards should converge

Then, take a ruler and connect the edge of the skirting board with the drawn mark. If you just put the skirting board on the table and cut it with a scythe line, the two parts will not fit together in the corner anyway: the inner part will be in the way. It can be trimmed later when trying on the ceiling.

There is also a second way. to install the piece to be trimmed on the table, the part that will be on the ceiling. And cut along the mowing line, but holding the knife at an angle of about 45°. Correction will still be necessary, but much less (and less chance of error).

Repeat the same operation with the second slat. Delivered to the desired wall, resting against the end into the adjoining wall, mark the spot where the cross is drawn, hold a fishing line and then cut off. Adjustments are made “dry” without glue.

Exactly the same steps you repeat for the outer (protruding) corner. Now you know another way of how to make the corner of the ceiling plinth, and without strings or other special devices.

Making a jig or a template

If you need the crossbeam for permanent work, and you can’t buy it for some reason at the moment, you can make such a tool from a well-treated board or plywood. For this you will need to prepare three wooden parts. The walls should have the size 500×100×15 and 500×80×15, and the bottom part 500×200×20 mm. The different height of the walls will contribute to a more comfortable sawing of the parts. The parts will be assembled into a box without end walls.

1 Side walls, 2 Bottom part

To the bottom part of the future jig is attached walls. it is best to fix them on wooden dowels glued into the drilled holes, but you can also use conventional self-tapping screws.

It is very important to align the walls perfectly before fastening them. Because they must be at right angles to the bottom board. Then, it is necessary to find the middle of the length of the walls and make its marking with a construction angle. Immediately, at the same time, file down, as the cuts must be exactly on the same mowing line. The depth of the hacksaw should be 60 mm. After that, at a distance of about 150 mm on each side from the center, two more marks are made on one of the ends of the walls. Then use an angle gauge or protractor to set the direction at 45 degrees. On the ends of the side walls apply a scythe line. Then their slope should be double-checked again, and then make the notches with the beam saw. It is very important when forming the cuts to keep the vertical plane, otherwise the chisel will turn out with a large error. The saws should sink 3 to 5 mm into the board base as well.

The chisel is a simple tool, but it is not so easy to make a really good device, because there is a high probability that the cuts will be beveled, at least a little.

Another way to make a tool for work

The correct angle ceiling plinth can be obtained and with the help of a template made by yourself. This method is very simple and does not require special knowledge, skills and tools. To work you need a sheet of thick paper or cardboard A4 size, a simple pencil, a ruler and a protractor. The process of making the tool takes place in the following sequence:

  • Measure from both sides of the sheet from its edge 30-50 mm.
  • on these marks two perpendicular to each other and parallel to the edges of the mowing line sheet are drawn.
  • the vertex of a right angle is formed at their intersection point.
  • using a protractor or the simplest graphical constructions, the right angle must be divided into two equal halves, which form angles of 45 degrees. The dividing line is the bisecting line. It should be located both above and below the lines. it is better to bring it to the middle or even to the edge of the sheet. This will help make a more accurate marking of the edge of the baguette of any width at the desired angle.

How to properly cut the corner

With the use of a jigsaw

If you are very new to this business, it is better to work with a special tool. a plane and a hacksaw. In this way you will be able to cut the skirting board strictly at a 45 degree angle, and also achieve a perfect joining of adjacent elements. In the process, pay attention to the following points:

  • First measure the length of the ceiling on a scythe line for mounting fillets;
  • With the help of a jigsaw, you can perform trimming of different angles in size;
  • If there are irregularities and edges on the baguettes, it is better to use a stationery knife.

Cutting the corner of the baguette is carried out as follows:

corner, ceiling

How to cut inside and outside corners for mounting quarter round to a ceiling.

  • Set the right parameters on the tool;
  • Insert the first piece and metal hacksaw into the tool;
  • Cut off the excess part of the baseboard;
  • insert the second part into the jig, which will be docked with the previous one;
  • Choose opposite holes, and do not change the cutting angle;
  • Cut the fillet.

If you do everything correctly, the parts will perfectly match each other when docking.

How to make the angle of the ceiling plinth without a jigsaw

Specialists say that without a jig to cut the ceiling plinth will turn out better quality, especially in the inner corners. The only disadvantage is working with wood or polyurethane fillets. Because of their massive weight, it will be quite difficult to hold them in outstretched hands while measuring.

  • First at an angle of 90° cut two pieces to be docked;
  • Now take one piece, put it on the ceiling, with the end part of the element against the wall, perpendicular to the fillet;
  • Draw the outline of the skirting board on the ceiling with a simple pencil;
  • Do the same with the second element;
  • Inspect the result. The place where the lines intersect will correspond to the place where the baseboard will be cut. To be sure, place the elements on the ceiling one more time, mark on them the places where the trimming will begin. From this point directly on the baseboard, run a fishing line, which you will make the cut;
  • Now cut off the excess parts of the parts and proceed to install them.

If, after gluing the skirting board to the ceiling, you saw that the angle is not very straight, the resulting gap can be putty or sealant.

How to make a cut with a wire cutter

Most rooms tend to have a room angle of 90 degrees. It is therefore necessary to make the trimming of the skirting board at 90 or 45 degrees. To do this correctly, you’ll need a tool called a plank cutter. It has several slots, each with its own angle.

Cutting the tack into the inner corner:

  • To do this, take the baguette and lay it in a jig. The hacksaw is inserted into the slots and a cut is made in the workpiece. The left groove should be closer;
  • The second baguette is cut in the same way. Only the right groove closer, the left one farther away.

The hacksaw is pressed firmly against the far wall of the jigsaw and is held in place with the inactive hand. The handle of the hacksaw or saw should be as close as possible to the hand that is holding the workpiece. Do not press the saw too hard.

Cutting the tack to the outer corners

  • First it is preferable to make a marking. To do this, attach the bar to the ceiling and mark the dimensions;
  • We press the workpiece to the wall, hold it with one hand, mark with a plasterboard knife;
  • Choose a 45-degree angle position for the hacksaw;
  • We cut the fillet;
  • Place the second baguette on the other side of the chair and cut it in the same way.

If the walls are not perfectly flat, it is better to use other methods, without using a special device.

How to make an eave notch by hand using a template

On a piece of paper draw a straight line. Draw a point on the workpiece with a pencil. Mark the angles of 90 and 45 degrees using a protractor. Draw straight lines of mowing line through the marks, so that when you work with the saw they can be clearly seen.

There is another easy way to cut the ledge “by eye”. You should take a part of the product and put it to the desired angle. When attaching it, watch carefully and mark the spot with a pencil.
