How to Cut Baguettes Corner Correctly

There are two of the most common methods for correctly, simply, and comfortably cutting flawless corners for skirting boards. The first involves the purchase of a special miter box with a large number of cuts along its perimeter, which help to cut the corner correctly and evenly. The second option is to cut corners without the help of a miter box, we’ll talk about it today. This process for beginners is quite complicated and painstaking, in addition, the presence of a miter box does not guarantee 100% ease of this work, be prepared for the fact that the first time you may not succeed.

There are several ways to create corner joints without the help of a miter box.

One of them is marking directly on the ceiling. First, we will need two pieces of baguette, cut at an angle of 90 degrees. It is not necessary to take two-meter racks at once and try to cut them, you can cut two pieces of 15-20 cm each to more easily hold them with one hand in the position you need. Next, we apply them in the next order to the ceiling and draw a 5-centimeter fishing line along the ceiling to the end of the baguette, firmly pressing the baseboard. After, we apply the second molding to the opposite corner, and we perform a similar action, and at the intersection of the baguette and the previously drawn line we make a neat notch with a pencil on the baguette. With the second baseboard you need to repeat the same thing, making a similar notch at the intersection of the baguette and the drawn line.

Now we can cut the baguette at the angle we need, for this, use a construction knife or a hacksaw, depending on the material from which the plinths are made (below we will tell you what materials baguettes are made of and what it is better to cut them with). In order to cut the corner correctly, place the baseboard on the table or chair, and cut from the point you marked on the ceiling to the opposite corner of the baseboard. After that, you can easily join the corners and glue. It must be borne in mind that this method is suitable for fitting only the internal corners, it will not work to adjust the external corners.

The second way is to draw a sheet of paper or plywood under the miter box, for this it is necessary to draw two parallel lines, then draw a perpendicular from one line to another, so we get a markup for a right angle. For marking at 45 degrees, you must use the clerical triangle or the protractor, drawing two lines at 45 degrees through the perpendicular relative to parallel lines. Further, as when working with the miter box, we put our baseboard along the line and cut it at the required angle.

Keep in mind that this method does not guarantee you an ideal angle, and basically in our houses the corners are uneven. “overwhelmed”, and therefore you will have to adjust the angle manually later.

The third method is to make a primitive miter box with your own hands., why it will not become less effective. To do this, take three planks or slats and knock them in the shape of the letter “P”, make cuts at a right angle and two cuts at 45 degrees. Thus, you cut corners without the “help” of the chair.

The fourth method is quite rare and inventive.. It consists in sophistication with thick paper or cardboard and a small bar. To do this, bend a sheet of cardboard at the angle you need, take a small bar, which will serve as a template for you to trim the corner. Press the prepared cardboard sheet to it and, holding the knife or hacksaw strictly vertically, carefully cut the bar at the angle you need. To trim the skirting board, simply lay the bar on the skirting board from above, press firmly and cut along the cut line of the bar.

The fifth way is to highlight the purchase of special accessories with ready-made ceiling angles: internal and external. Unfortunately, there are a lot of variations in the design of the skirting board; special inserts may not be found under your skirting board. But in general, it is very convenient for those who do not want to cut out corner joints.

But also if your house has non-standard angles, then finished blanks or a miter box will not help you. After all, there is only 45, 60 and 90 degrees, you can cut the connection. In this case, cut the edge of the baguette by eye at an angle of 45 degrees, and try on to your corner, carefully trim it, so you can achieve an almost perfect connection, with only one. there can be a lot of such fitting and trimming.

As you can see, in the absence of a miter box, you can still cut the right corner connection for baguettes, you just need patience and perseverance, and extra skills will not hurt anyone in the future.

Necessary materials

The set of tools for making a corner ceiling connection without using a miter box is not so large, and in principle does not differ from a set with a miter box. Almost every home has these tools:

  • pencil;
  • roulette;
  • ruler;
  • construction knife with interchangeable blades;
  • hacksaw;
  • ceiling plinth.

You will need a tape measure and ruler for accurate measurements and straight lines, everyone has them in the house. It should be noted that without a ruler you will not be able to draw straight lines for trimming corners in the first way.

A construction or office knife with interchangeable blades is an indispensable assistant in the house. Its cost, like a construction pencil, is low, and it is always available, it will give you the opportunity to cut easily and evenly needed segments, cut a corner or cut thin plates when fitting the connection. Some skirting boards are made of material that is recommended to be cut only with a knife and not with a hacksaw due to the softness of the material.

You will need a hacksaw only if the material from which the baguettes are made is recommended to be cut only with it. An ordinary hacksaw with small cloves will do.

The ceiling plinth must be chosen both from aesthetic and from practical considerations. It should harmoniously fit into your design, cover the joints of the ceiling and walls, hide defects and irregularities. When choosing a baguette, it is necessary to take into account the material from which it is made. this affects the choice of tools for cutting and glue for installation, as well as the type of coating on which the baseboard will be glued.

Step-by-step instruction

When installing the ceiling skirting, first of all, you need to prepare the surface before gluing the skirting board, it must be cleaned from small irregularities, then the glueing places must be primed to create maximum adhesion between the adhesive and the wall or ceiling. The primer is the same as that used for wallpapering or ceiling tiles.

Before sticking, it is recommended to take a small piece of baguette and practice cutting out the corner joints so as not to spoil the excess.

So, you have prepared everything, and it’s time to start the process of cutting corners. To create an internal corner, the first of the methods described above is perfect for you. If you have smooth walls, you can cut equal pieces from baguettes and cut corner joints from them, then simply glue long strips neatly against them. These manipulations will facilitate your work when cutting and exclude the possibility of bending the baguette or breaking it.

If the walls have flaws, and you worry that the gluing place will then be noticeable, you can adjust the angle on the floor, and then glue it.

When cutting the outer corner, you must remember that the inner corner abuts the wall, and the outer, on the contrary, protrudes above it. By analogy with the method described in the first method, you can try. The only difference is that the exit of the baseboard outside the wall is needed to the width of your plank of baguette. Cutting the trims at the desired angle and connecting them, you may need to adjust the angle manually, since the angles in our homes are often not close to 90 degrees. The rest of the methods described by us will allow you to more easily make the outer corner. As well as when cutting the inner corner, it is better to work out first. this will facilitate your work and reduce the waste of the baseboard.

Before gluing skirting boards, make sure that the joints are precisely aligned. Modern assembly adhesives quickly set, so you will practically not have time to correct the mistakes made, and tearing off the baseboard is both an opportunity to break it and the need to re-clean the surface of the baseboard and wall from the adhesive. It is better to immediately remove excess glue with a small clean rag or sponge so that no traces remain.

With proper patience and the right fit, you can achieve a “seamless” connection, and your baguette will look whole, which will simplify your further painting and eliminate the need to use finishing putty to smooth the joint seams.

Sometimes the bumps in the walls or ceiling prevent you from gluing the baseboard along the entire length, firmly pressed to the wall or ceiling, or you made a little mistake when cutting the inner corner, and you have a gap. Finishing acrylic putty of white color is perfect for eliminating these defects. It is well painted after drying, and also with its help you can accurately putty the joints. This putty is sold in a ready-made form, you don’t need to mix it yourself with water and worry about not observing the proportions, the price of a small jar of such putty ranges from 150 to 400 rubles, depending on the manufacturer. If you want to do everything aesthetically, do not spare this money, and buy a small jar. According to personal observations, cans of ready-made putty of 0.5 kg in volume will suffice for you and all the flaws in the joints of the ceiling plinth, and to eliminate other minor errors during the repair.

And also for an easier trimming of corners, you can use the clerical triangle, it will give you the opportunity to accurately cut the angle of 45 degrees.
