OSB plate. multilayer slab material, pressed from wood chips with the addition of resins. The arrangement of the chips is not chaotic, but longitudinal or transverse, in adjacent layers mutually perpendicular. Hence the name oriented strand board. In English, the abbreviation OSB (Oriented Strand Board) is used, and in Russian. OSB or OSB.

OSB plate prices

The price of OSB depends on the thickness and area of the plate, brand, additional processing. For OSB-3, it varies in the following range:

Benefits of OSB.3

The OSB plate has several advantages:

  • reasonable price (made from woodworking waste);
  • absence of defects, homogeneous structure without knots, voids, delamination, deviations from the average density do not exceed 15%;
  • beautiful texture;
  • low thermal conductivity;
  • good sound absorption;
  • smooth smooth surface is ready for finishing, does not need additional grinding;
  • it lends itself well to processing, cutting, and due to stiffness in the plate any fasteners hold firmly;
  • light weight makes the material convenient in transportation and installation;
  • OSB is not afraid of rot, mold, woodworm insects.

Characteristics and types

4 categories of this material are distinguished depending on strength, resistance to mechanical stress and water resistance.

The most popular material is OSB-3.

OSB boards also differ in the way they treat surfaces and ends. Can be varnished, laminated, grooved.

OSB Dimensions

OSB plates vary in thickness. It can be 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 18, 20, 22, 25 mm. The tensile strength of plates is inversely proportional to their thickness.

  • 2440×1220 (Kronospan);
  • 2500×1250 (Kronospan, Egger, Krono);
  • 2800×1250 (Kronospan).

OSB disadvantages

With numerous advantages, an oriented particle board is not without some drawbacks. In particular, not all manufacturers use safe polymer binders and comply with environmental regulations. In production, resins containing formaldehyde and other toxic substances are often used, and the emission level may exceed the maximum permissible level. Therefore, it is better to buy products of well-known brands that have passed certification. Unlike solid wood, OSB has low vapor permeability, therefore, enclosing structures from it do not breathe.

Application area

The possibilities of using OSB boards are diverse. First of all, this is construction work. Of them make and build:

  • SIP-panels for frame construction, the base of thermal panels;
  • continuous roof lathing;
  • dry floor screed and top flooring;
  • removable formwork;
  • temporary fences.

The waterproof OSB plate for outdoor use is used as a facade cladding for painting, plastering or as a rough sheath, on top of which other facing materials are mounted. Plates of the lower class are suitable for the manufacture of containers, supporting elements of furniture, inner lining of vehicles.

What is the thickness of the OSB plate for the floor on the logs

OSB boards serve as a reliable base for flooring. They can be laid on a solid foundation (concrete or old plank floor) to level, harden and insulate it. Often, OSB installation on lags is also carried out. If you lay too thin plates on supports that are far apart from each other, they will bend under load. The larger the step between the lags, the thicker the OSB is required. OSB-3 is suitable for the floor; these boards combine high strength with moisture resistance.

Thickness OBS-3, mm

Important! The table shows the averaged data, to obtain more accurate engineering calculations are necessary, taking into account a number of additional factors.

Is it possible to fix a tile on an OSB plate

OBS is used as a perfectly even base for various finishes. When laying ceramic tiles on OSB boards, the following points should be taken into account:

  • OSB. a material with high absorbency, because of this, the consumption of glue increases and the adhesion of the wood board and ceramic tile deteriorates;
  • oriented particle boards. an elastic, quite flexible material, and tile. very hard.

To increase the rigidity of the base under the flooring, it is necessary to reduce the step between the logs (if OSB is mounted on them) to 20-30 cm and use a plate with a thickness of at least 15 mm. When facing the walls, you can follow the standard scheme (the pitch between the frame elements is 40-60 cm, the OSB thickness is 12 mm).

Adhesion can be improved in several ways.

  1. Prepare the stove itself and use glue for wooden substrates.
  2. Fasten the reinforcing mesh to the OSB.
  3. Perform intermediate cladding with moisture-resistant drywall.

The latter option is the most expensive and leads to a slight increase in the thickness of the structure, but the tile will be glued securely. For its fastening, you can use compositions based on gypsum, cement. And the drywall itself is attached to the OSB with screws. In the first two cases, you first need to increase the roughness of the plate by treating it with a coarse-grained sandpaper. Then in 2 doses with an interval of at least an hour, the plate is covered with a polymer primer or PVA glue. After 12 hours, after the primer has completely dried, you can start gluing the tiles.

If a metal mesh with cells of 5-10 mm is fixed on a plate prepared in this way, it will be even more reliable. The grid is fastened with brackets or self-tapping screws without sagging and tearing, at the joints, an overlap of several centimeters is made. Even in the case of mesh reinforcement, it is better to choose a glue mixture of high elasticity for wooden substrates, for example, Ceresit CM17. For floors that will be subjected to significant stress, a two-component epoxy adhesive is preferable, but it will cost more.

So, laying ceramic tiles on the OSB plate is possible, but requires additional labor and materials.

How to cut and fasten these plates

OSB boards are quite workable. But since this material contains binders and consists of wood chips, not all tools are equally well suited for its cutting. Can be used:

  • a hacksaw with the smallest teeth, well sharpened, which must be kept at a minimum angle to the plane. But this is a long time, it is difficult to achieve perfect evenness of the cut, chips are inevitable;
  • jigsaw also leaves chips, along the cutting line a pile is formed. But this is the best choice if you need to cut a curved part at home. For OSB, use a “clean cut” file;
  • manual electro-milling cutter at a speed of 5-20 mm / s performs a clean, but not deep enough cut. Therefore, you have to make several passes. But for blind cuts and selections, making curved holes, it is very convenient;
  • A circular saw with a large number of teeth provides a clean perfectly straight cut, it can also be turned at an angle of 45 ° to get an oblique edge.

Most often, the OSB plate is attached using self-tapping screws. But it matters to which base or supports the mount is made.

If the slabs are laid on a concrete base, rubber-based glue is used, and it must be applied to the underside of the slab. Additional fixing is carried out with the help of dowel nails on concrete, the length of which should be 30-35 mm longer than the thickness of the plates. Clog them in increments of 20-30 cm.

For fastening to a tree (old plank floor, logs, rafters, roof lathing or wall frame made of timber, boards) can be used:

  • wood screws;
  • spiral (screw) nails;
  • ring nails.
  • For inclined and horizontal

planes (roof, floor, ceiling) the length of the hardware should be 40-45 mm longer than the thickness of the plate, for wall sheathing. 45-50 mm for nails, and at least 2.5 times for self-tapping screws. If it is important that the hat does not protrude from the surface, you need to use self-tapping screws with dish-shaped heads. For the floor, phosphated self-tapping screws are suitable for installation on logs and galvanized. on a solid plank base. For roofing, galvanized is preferable.

  • on intermediate supports. 30 cm;
  • at the joints. 15 cm,
  • along the perimeter. 10 cm.

The distance from the edge should be at least 1 cm.

The plates are attached to the frame from the metal profile of the OSB using self-tapping screws for metal 10-15 mm longer than the plate thickness. The step is the same as when attaching to a tree.
