How to fix the starter motor on a lawn mower

Single Axle Tractor Starter: Construction, Repair and Maintenance Recommendations

Power tillers are known for their design features. In particular, the fact that they use two starters at once. Auxiliary or spring starter helps the main one to start properly and quickly. But if the auxiliary starter suddenly fails, you have to think about how to repair the manual starter. Perhaps even with your own hands.

By the way, the spring option is not the only one. The manual starter on a single-axle tractor is quite common, it is common in Russia. It is much easier to use. It is easier to install, even if the user does it with his own hands. It has quite an uncomplicated design:

  • drum case;
  • coil;
  • Spring, or rather, as many as two: large and small;
  • washer;
  • cord;
  • tongues;
  • bolts and nuts, without which it is impossible to assemble either a mechanical or an electric starter.

When assembled, it looks like this: the cord is attached to the spool, and it is fixed to the core of the drum housing. There is a special space inside the drum, where a large spring is placed around the axle. It is responsible for ensuring that after cranking, the starter returns to its previous position.

How does the manual starter work?

When the user of the power tiller sharply pulls the starter handle, the entire mechanism installed on the machine comes into motion. The initial rotation passes to the single-axle tractor, or rather to the engine, and it starts. As a rule, to start the engine, you have to pull the starter grip a few times sharply to get it to start properly.

As already mentioned, the manual starter is the least fanciful. In most cases, the starter repair is to fix the places where the springs are attached. They sometimes unravel. Or perhaps the repair of the starter will be to replace some parts with new. Sometimes you need to replace the starter cord.

In order to determine the specific fault, you will need to disassemble the area of the power tiller, in which the starter is mounted. In what order should the repair take place:

  • To begin with, you’ll need to arm yourself with a diagram from the manufacturer. It describes how and where all its parts are attached to the power harvester. You will also need a wrench, with which you will unscrew and remove the nuts.
  • Next, you need to disconnect the starter. It is better to take a picture and write down everything about its mounting scheme. Otherwise you might not be able to put it back together.
  • In the center of the drum you will see a washer, which must be unscrewed. This is the top washer. When you take it off, take apart what you find inside and check if anything is damaged.

How to remove the ratchet from a grass trimmer. Lawnmower starters: design and installation details

The manual starter for a lawn mower or gasoline grass trimmer is a mechanical assembly that includes a pulley placed on a ratchet. There is a rope wound around the pulley in its original position. When you start, it pulls out. The pulley is spring loaded. once you let go of the end of the rope, it will coil back up. The spring is a flat strip coiled into a ring. It is reminiscent of the spring in a large mechanical watch that is wound once a day. The starter itself is located more often on the back, the closer to the front end of the mower or grass trimmer. To properly perform all manipulations with the starter for a lawnmower, you need to know the peculiarities of the device and installation.

How the starter of a lawnmower or grass trimmer is constructed?

The starter is a mechanism that is generally unified and universal for gasoline lawnmowers, trimmers, gasoline- and diesel-powered generators. Not a problem to equip even a car, motorcycle or scooter with it, if your vehicle has the space to fit it. It is not for nothing that many Soviet cars and trucks were equipped with a starter tool, remotely resembling a bent double crowbar.

Modern “hand crank” is started exactly from the cord. the one is tied to the mechanism, and it is impossible to lose it.

The starter assembly has the following parts:

  • The ignition spring with a hook;
  • the cord wound on the spool;
  • return spring;
  • ratchet drive and the main spring;
  • The mechanism housing that protects the ratchet;
  • locking bolt.

Worst case of failure

There are times when the starter is still functional, but the cord may be torn, such as a frayed cord. The ratchet has not yet had time to work when starting the engine, and the remains of the cord are immediately wound on the spool, the return spring loses its hooks, the grooves in the body of the starter are broken. The result is the replacement of both the spring and the housing.

starter, motor, lawn, mower

If the lawnmower or grass trimmer model has long been discontinued, it will be difficult to find exactly the same parts, and the starter is replaced as a whole.

How to replace or put in place the starter spring?

If the rope on the starter is OK, the coil itself is suspect. It is powered by a coiled ribbon spring. To change the spring, there are certain steps to take.

  • Remove the starter motor from the lawnmower.
  • Remove the starter coil.
  • Unscrew the main bolt holding the pulley to the housing.
  • Take out the catching tendrils and the spring, the band spring is almost completely straightened out or rolled up with rings of larger diameter.
  • Hold it in advance.
  • Check if the spring is intact (rusty spots, breaks, etc. may be present). д.). If the hooks on its ends are broken, you won’t be able to bend new ones. high carbon steel breaks when you try to bend it. Loose hooks are suitable for slight bending.
  • Make sure the auxiliary (regular) spring and washers are in place. These parts protect the coil frame from being ground by the ends of the main spring. If washers and spring are broken and no new ones are available, do not screw the spool bolt in tight, but keep an eye on it. it may unscrew and lose.
  • If the main (flat) spring is damaged, insert a new one. Put the hook on the end of the spring in its place and bend it, inserting it coil by coil into the space where it is supposed to be.

Rewind the spring in a minute. This is a quick skill to acquire.

How to repair chain saw starter with your own hands

Chainsaw is the main tool with which you can stockpile wood for a bath or fireplace, you can also use it during construction work on a summer cottage or a private home. By following all the criteria of operation and preventive measures that are provided by the manufacturer, chain saw can serve for a long time. But as time passes, there may be small problems with which you can cope without the help of others. For example, the chain saw starter repair with their own hands on the forces of compliance with the sequence of operations.

The device starter chainsaw: 1 starter screw, 2 bushing, 3 spring easy starter, 4 screw, 5, 6 coil starter, 7 deflector, 8 the cover starter, 9 handle and cord, 10 screw.

Typical malfunctions

The most common breakdowns of the tool include the following:

  • Problems in the ignition system;
  • Stopping the chainsaw while you are sawing
  • Loss of power at work;
  • Wear on some of the chainsaw components (brake belt, drive sprocket, anti-vibration parts);
  • Problems in the fuel system;
  • Faults related to the starter motor.

In addition, it is necessary to visually inspect the chainsaw before starting work and take preventive measures. These include chain lubrication, controlling the amount of fuel mixture, and the presence of the required amount of oil.

Unscrew the spark plug to check the condition of the spark plug.

Each of the malfunctions is eliminated according to its own technology. For example, repairing a chainsaw’s fuel system should begin with inspecting the appropriate filter. Electric lawn mower starting problems. After that, check the correct adjustment of the carburetor, which is carried out with the help of screws. The clearances should be set in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, which should come with the chainsaw. The repair of the ignition system includes inspections of the spark plugs. If you find a strong fouling, a change in the gap or other visible damage, this element should be replaced.

Starter repairs

Problems with the starter may not allow the tool to start. That is, after the cord is pulled, the chainsaw will not start.

How to install a spring in a manual starter for a gasoline trimmer? At home it can be done. Me.

Before you make the repair of the starter, it is necessary to prepare the tools with which to perform the work:

  • A set of screwdrivers or a special tool that is supplied by the manufacturer with the tool;
  • A rope, which will be used as a replacement for a broken cord, if necessary.

A large amount of black soot on the spark plug indicates a malfunction of the engine.

Remove the starter motor from the tool housing before directly commencing repair work and determining the cause of the fault. To do this you need to unscrew the screws that hold the side cover on which the starter motor is fastened. Problem with the STIHL 38 lawnmower starter. This is done with a screwdriver or a specialized tool.

After the cover is unscrewed, it is turned over and inspected. Then the screw that secures the starter must be unscrewed. After that, remove the clamp and spring to implement a smooth start. The pulley, on which the cord is wound, is now available for removal. Once the knot on the rope is untied, it can be removed from the pulley and replaced with a new one. Provided that the loss of starter performance is due to a breakage, this may be enough to fix the breakage. The cord to start the lawnmower. However, the other parts that make up this element of the chainsaw should be carefully inspected.

The spring mechanism

Manual design is simple, but it can be improved to save effort and time. For example, to put an electric starter for a power tiller. Then you won’t have to pull the handle every time. But keep in mind: this design will not work with all manual starters. And the electrical circuitry you choose to install may not fit every engine.

starter, motor, lawn, mower

In these cases, you should pay attention to the third option: a spring mechanism for starting the engine. After installing it on the engine, you just need to move the handle of the power tiller and it will start immediately. This type of kickstarter is based on the semi-automatic operation of the spring. It accelerates the engine mounted on a single-axle tractor without having to pull the handle with your hands. To change a full manual starter to a mechanical one, it may take about two hours.

The main faults of the grass trimmer starter

Determining the cause of failure of the starter unit is not difficult. The main options are several:

These parts are shown in the photo below.

It can happen that the starter mechanism is accidentally broken. The consequences will be dire if the torn rope gets wrapped around the flywheel of a running engine: then the spring will burst, the pulley will tear. But such cases, when you need a complete replacement of the starter unit, are very rare. In most cases, to fix the mechanism, it is enough to put a new spring or replace the cord.

Repair of manual starter gasoline generator

Nearly all gasoline generators, even those with an electric starter, have a manual starter, in case of battery failure. The starter is the main link in starting an alternator and is also often the cause of engine starting problems.

When going to work far from civilization, add a spare manual starter assembly to the repair kit. To be able to replace a defective part and correctly assemble the manual starter need to know how this mechanism is constructed.

Pass the cable of the recoil starter through the hole in the recoil and tie a knot. 2. Hook the side hook of the hand starter spring into the groove of the hand starter housing, place the hand starter spring into the housing, turning it counterclockwise. 3. Install the manual starter spring with the outer hook in the groove of the starter coil. 4. Place the starter drive ratchet on the recoil of the recoil starter. 5. Install the return spring on the spool of the hand starter, hooking its hook on the ratchet of the actuator. 6. Install the spring, the ratchet body, and secure with the set screw. 7. Unwind the cable of the recoil starter, put it through the back cover and the recoil starter grip and tie a knot. Pull the hand starter cord slightly to check that the ratchet is functioning.

1.Replacing the starter cord of a gasoline generator.(Wrap the starter cord around the pulley (from the end of the pulley tucked so it does not rotate) the second end of the cord into the hole in the cover and the crank tie. Reel in as much cord as is long enough (the handle is against the cover of the recoil starter). Then pull out the lanyard by 15-20 cm., The pulley will turn and the spring will tighten. Hold the pulley so it doesn’t twist back and those 15-20 cm. Put the lanyard on it. Check, pull-release the lanyard. If it comes back fine, leave it that way, weakly pull the cord up another 1 turn on the pulley.)

The most common faults on lawnmowers

As for problems with engine failure or jamming, they are virtually uncommon in cart-type lawnmowers, which we review in the article. These faults are more likely to be inherent in manual petrol lawnmowers, and account for almost half of the reasons why users call for service.

Find the Reasons Reasons Reasons Your Lawnmower Refuses to Start

If the mower stubbornly refuses to start, and you for some reason do not want or can not go to the service shop, then try to follow a simple troubleshooting algorithm. As always use an efficient way of looking for the cause, going from the simple to the more complex.

Check engine pressure (compression). For this it is necessary to get a special device in advance. a compressor to measure the parameters of lawn mowers. Normal engine compression should be in the range of five to eight atmospheres (it all depends on the individual characteristics of your engine). Parameters of compression of your unit should be specified in the accompanying technical documentation. If the level of compression is much less than indicated. then your piston system is out of order, requires deeper study, repair or replacement of its elements.

Your lawn mower engine is stuck. Although this type of failure occurs much less frequently in cart-type devices, but it can not be completely excluded. Mostly jamming of the engine occurs due to gross violations of the mode of operation of lawnmowers. But if this does happen, it will cost you a lot of money to repair your lawn mower at a service center. Always read and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for the use, storage and maintenance of the appliance.

Lawnmower starter motor malfunction. To check the starter motor function is simple enough: simply try pulling the starter cord out of the lawnmower. If it’s not coming out try unscrewing the top cover together with the starter mechanism and try pulling the cord again. If this time, too, the cord does not give way. diagnose a broken starter.

If the cord after separating the cover from the engine began to pull, put the mower on its side and try several times to turn the working knife by hand. If the knife does not rotate, then the engine is jammed and you will have to send it to the service center, conduct a deep diagnosis and, depending on the outcome, repair or replace.

The carburetor is out of order. This is the most common cause (more than half) of mower breakdowns on cart lawnmowers. The carburetor will have to be removed from the mower, disassembled and carefully examined. Also check that the gaskets and the air damper, which is responsible for mixing the air and fuel, are in good condition.

How to repair the gasoline starter with your own hands?

In the case of a broken starter cord, everything is clear: we take out the old rope, take the appropriate length and thickness (you can use linen), pass it through the hole in the spool, tie a knot. Next, we press the spring for the required number of turns, only then do we fix the knob. And voila! Details of how to do this are given below.

But what if everything is okay with the rope and the starter coil (pulley) does not roll? Let’s look at this problem step by step using the example of the ADA GroundDrill gasoline-powered drill, which has a pulley with two metal antennas for 2 hooks.

As for other types of manual starters of this design, which are widely used in gasoline trimmers, trimmers and power drills, the whole process of repairing the starter will look similar, with a few nuances.

Starter repair: disassembly

Loosen the screw that fastens the pulley to the starter cover. Removing the antennae, the spring. The pulley itself is pulled gently so that the spring does not bounce in your face. Even with the most accurate disassembly, it will usually fly right out of the coil and abruptly turn into a long metal strip or twist into rings.

Carefully pull out the white starter coil. do not damage the spring!

If the spring breaks or one of its hooks and hooks breaks, it is impossible to repair the starter simply and quickly. you need to replace the spring. To avoid spending money to buy a new starter, you can only look for them for sale.

If the starter spring just broke, t. Е. One of the hooks is not fixed, just enough to insert it if necessary, tightening the hooks a little tighter (just don’t break it!) Insert the spring from the outer hook into the pulley slot and start twisting it with your fingers inside the coil. and not letting it pop out.

Pressing the spring against the pulley, in a circular motion wrap the spring inside

The first time to insert the starter spring It may not seem so easy, but everything comes with experience. With a little practice, you can easily wind the spring onto the pulley for no more than a minute.

How to assemble the starter?

The most important thing in the process of reassembling the starter. assemble it correctly.

After the spring is fully wound, you must carefully rotate the coil and insert it into the starter housing so that the second hook of the spring falls into the slot of the housing.

Installing the pulley (black in this photo), we scan the hole in it so that the spring hook fits into the slot on the starter cover.

Then, if there is a spring under the screw, install it first, remembering to place washers on the bottom and top of the spring.

Carefully insert the antenna cup into the grooves of the coil and tighten the screw.

Then make sure that the washer located on the spring does not fall out. Why it’s important? The point is that the spring scratches the plastic cup with its end, causing the latter to wear out and begin to tighten the screw to the coil more tightly. For this reason, the situation is very similar to a spring break: the handle is pulled out of the starter, but does not turn back. However, when the starter screw is unscrewed, this problem disappears. This kind of starter malfunction is not easy to fix: just match the spring with the same diameter, but a little longer, or install an additional washer. If you tighten the screw a little, it will rotate and fly out, which increases the chance of spring break, because the pulley will not fit tightly against the starter housing.

They screwed the coil to the body, now we need to tighten the spring. Before doing this, it is necessary to remove the starter handle from the rope beforehand. If the knot is too tight, you can simply cut it or try to untie it, for example with pliers. This is so that you can insert the rope into the hole in the starter cover after the spring is depressed. The other end of the rope should be fixed in the reel before installing it in the body, no need to wind the rope on the pulley before tensioning the spring. do it after.

Before spring arrives, estimate how much of the spool should be wound on the rope. Let’s say the rope on the Ada GroundDrill-5 starter is 5.5 turns around the spool. In this case, make at least 6 turns of the spool in the direction opposite to the winding direction.

So, let’s get started. Without winding, insert the rope into the groove in the specially designed spool. Done, start pulling the spring. To do this, turn the spool counterclockwise. in the direction opposite to the direction of rotation of the spool when winding the rope. It is more convenient to do this not on your knees, but by pressing the starter with one hand to the floor, and with the other. turning the spool right behind the rope attached to it. If you don’t have enough experience, the pulley itself can be rotated directly with two hands, but the rope will interfere with it, which may cause additional inconvenience. After the required number of turns is done, we pass the end of the rope through the hole in the starter cover, put on the handle, fix it with a knot. It’s more convenient to do this with your Ragtrap, so that the end of the cable doesn’t accidentally twist inside the starter.

By the way, you can make some modifications to the starter yourself to secure the end of the spring inside the coil. Then someone has enough imagination. Now I will explain what is needed. It often happens that the spring in these types of starters after the first repair and install the starter on the machine again takes off after a few pushes. The hook is not held in the recess of the coil. This is in spite of the fact that the coil is almost tightly attached to the starter cover and the spring should not hang down freely, much less until the spring is out of engagement. It turns out that when the cable is pulled, the spring is pulled out of the groove. In this case, you can do the following: cut a narrow strip of metal, which is thick enough to be inserted into the slot of the coil along with the spring hook. This way, the hook will not hang loosely in the groove, so it won’t be easy to break.

A metal plate, tightly inserted into the gap between the hook of the spring and the walls of the slot, will hold the spring securely.

Other solution to the problem. Drill small holes in the coil on either side of the groove and, after inserting the spring hook, secure it with thin wire stretched through these holes. But here you need to make sure that this wire does not come into contact when the starter cover rotates from the inside and thus does not brake the pulley. Alternatively, tighten the screw tightly or replace it with a slightly longer length. You can put a gasket between the cover and the spool.

Ask questions, share your experience with others. Together we can solve the problem of frequent starter breakdowns once and for all!
