How to make a hand jigsaw with their own hands

Instruction: How to make a jigsaw with their own hands from an electric jigsaw?

Electric jigsaw has long ceased to be a rarity and is present in the set of tools of almost any home master. It is convenient, capable of cutting various materials, relatively safe. Electric jigsaw is designed for cutting curved shapes, closed or having a complex configuration. He is indispensable for many works on the improvement of the house, in the construction of drywall structures, boxes, other works.

However, in some cases it becomes difficult or inconvenient to work with hand tools: the poor visibility of the mowing line of the cut, the need to hold the workpiece with two hands, etc.п. But the main problem with the hand jigsaw is the saw’s withdrawal to the side, especially evident when cutting materials of great thickness and with small radii of curvature. In such cases, you need a jigsaw, which you can create with your own hands.

The hand jigsaw is simple, quick and affordable

How to make a jigsaw quickly from available and inexpensive materials? Here is the easiest way.

Handle the Hand Knuckles with Your Own Hands

  • Plywood sheet (10 mm);
  • plywood sheet (4 mm);
  • sheet steel (2 mm);
  • bolts and nuts;
  • drill;
  • chisel;
  • sanding paper;
  • file.

The base of the hand jigsaw is a bracket, it should be prepared from plywood sheet (10 mm). Next, it is recommended to make thickenings for the handle of the tool from thinner plywood (4 mm). These thickenings should be glued to the handle on both sides, which will ensure later more convenient operation of the jigsaw. The bracket and handle are well treated with sanding paper and a file. It is necessary to chisel out of the steel plate and then clean the jaws with a file. After that, drill holes in the jaws and then use a sharp chisel to cut notches inside the jaws. Finish the slot for the bolt in the left clamping jaw by making a thread. Attach the jaws to the bracket, then screw the bolts into the left clamp, securing them with nuts.

Construction of electric jigsaw machine

Electric band jigsaw is a household all-purpose device for making souvenirs, furniture, various interior items. There are many variants of making such machines. But the main elements, on which the quality of products and ease of operation depend, are the electric motor and the blade of the blade.

  • Saw blade.
  • Crank mechanism.
  • drive unit.
  • Belt tensioning assembly.
  • Stand or work table.
  • Various auxiliary elements.

Disadvantages of the hand jigsaw

A manual jigsaw is designed to form smooth cuts. As the rollers, piston rod, and pusher wear out, the saw may run and deviate from a straight line, change the angle of attack. Regardless of the quality of the tool assemblies, the following features are always present:

  • If the saw becomes blunt, a deviation from a straight edge occurs when cutting materials of unequal density (e.g., low-quality chipboard). The saw is capable of moving away from the mowing line of the cut by encountering a knot in the wood.
  • When trying to make a curved radius cut, you can observe the following picture: the upper line of the cut, which the worker is watching, goes along the exact trajectory, the lower. deviates, goes sideways, the radius becomes larger. The greater the wear on the tool and the lower the sharpness of the saw, the more pronounced the phenomenon.
  • Some materials cannot be handled using a pick-up or bottom feed saw. The carpenter is required to drive the tool forward extremely evenly, which cannot be done very accurately, resulting in the saw beating along the entry and exit path.

It’s even more difficult to work with thin, shaped-cutting saws. If there is no practice, it is very difficult to achieve a good result, especially on thick board or wood materials. Let’s see how we can make the carpenter’s work easier and the result better.

What are jigsaws for?

They are also used for sawing the inner contours of products, with pre-drilling of the material to be sawed.

Such a tool, unlike manual or electric jigsaws, leaves both hands free for the person working on it, which greatly facilitates the work and allows to perform it with the greatest accuracy. Most jigsaws, provided the correct selection and installation of files, allow for sawing even in fairly thick workpieces, with strict adherence to an angle of 90º with respect to the plane of the workpiece.

Also, many models have an inclined table, which makes it possible to perform complex patterns at strictly defined angles, different from the right angle, which is almost impossible when using manual or electric jigsaws.

In addition to home use, they are widely used in furniture factories and enterprises for the manufacture of musical instruments. It is true that quite often they are replaced by laser machines, but the burnt edges left by the latter do not make their use ubiquitous.

Self-made jigsaw from a hand tool

Designs and drawings presented in the network options of homemade jigsaw differs. The blame is on authors’ imagination and desire to make a device that will stand out from the rest. Only the concept in most cases is the same. they take a hand jigsaw as a base and re-profile it.

Home woodworking enthusiasts often look for information how to make a jigsaw with their own hands without any special skills. It is possible to use a ready-made hand jigsaw as a base. The mechanism does not require a thorough reworking. The factory hand-held device is the actuator. But the crank mechanism has to be developed independently. Manufacturers are trying to offer the consumer a platform for quick modification, but personal needs can be satisfied only with their own product.

  • Make a support table. Take a sheet of metal as the material and make a hole in it. Shape. oblong, 3-4 times wider than the saw blade. Holes for the fasteners are made side by side.
  • At the bottom of the support table fix the factory device. Holes for fasteners are made near the hole for the saw blade. countersunk head screws are used as fasteners. This is needed to ensure that the table is perfectly flat. Otherwise, work pieces that are being machined will cling to the flats of the culprits, which will cause inconvenience in your work.
  • The design is fixed on a wooden table.

The advantage of creating a machine from an electric jigsaw with your own hands is that the factory tool can be disconnected at any time. When necessary. in the hands of an ordinary hand jigsaw. Therefore, it is better to buy a manual version of the tool, which can be used on a homemade machine. so cheaper. Stationary devices are expensive.

Comfortable work with wooden products can be provided by installing sliding rails on a homemade support table. Additionally, the table is marked, which facilitates the measurement of distance on the parts during processing.

Jigsaw machine from an electric jigsaw

Not everyone has the need to regularly carry out decorative shape sawing. Often, to solve such problems, home masters suffice the usual manual electric jigsaw. Not everyone wants to buy a cumbersome and rather expensive unit for one-time use and further dust collection. Still, in everyday life, sometimes there is a job that requires the most accurate and precise sawing. In that case, you can assemble a fairly simple machine from an electric jigsaw with your own hands, using a minimal set of materials and a little imagination.

To date, the network presents a variety of versions of the desktop jigsaw, varying degrees of complexity and efficiency. After reviewing dozens of products, we settled on the most interesting and at the same time simple assembly that meets the main requirements for the quality of the cut. To assemble a similar jigsaw from a hand jigsaw with his own hands, even a beginner, who has the necessary tools at his disposal can. For the assembly will require:

  • Chipboard (3 pcs): 600x400x20 (length, width, height)
  • A spring
  • Profile pipe (1.5 m): 30x30x2 (length, width, thickness)
  • Jigsaw
  • Flat washers (4 pcs)
  • Bolts for washers and connections
  • Self-tapping screws for tabletop assembly

1.The first thing to do is to assemble the base of the future machine. For this We take 3 prepared sheets of wood chipboard or other thick enough wood material and make a construction out of them, similar to the letter “p”. Secure along the edges with self-tapping screws. For more safety and stability, you can make a back wall.

In the center of the surface of the assembled tabletop we mark the future holes for the saw and a few fasteners for the jigsaw. For this purpose we remove from the jigsaw soleplate, bring it by the opposite (not flat) side to the future place of attachment and make some points through the slots of the soleplate. At this stage it is necessary to observe the accuracy, as, installed from below, the jigsaw should have the most accurate, perpendicular to the sides of the table, in order to avoid the distortion of the saw in further work. Marked points, we drill a drill 3-4 mm, and the central (for the saw) at 10 mm. As in the photos below.

After fixing the jigsaw under the table top, we proceed to assembling the upper arm from the square tube that serves as the tensioner of the saw blade. As the fixed lever we cut off a part of the pipe with a length of 300 mm and at one end we weld fixing elements (angle bars or lugs). The sliding part must be a little longer (about 45 cm). The connection of the two elements is carried out using a bolt with a nut and a U-shaped metal element welded to the end of the post, as in the photo below.

A washer is welded to the end of the movable arm, which will be directly on top of the saw.

Before installing the assembled tensioner design to the tabletop surface, be sure to make sure that the end of the boom is directly over the hole drilled for the saw. If the upper mount goes to the side a lot, the saw will often tear, complicating the process of sawing. When the ideal position of the tensioner is verified, fix the construction to the tabletop with bolts.

Since the jigsaw is not adapted to work with thin saws, we make a simple adapter fastener for it. For this purpose we take an old saw blade, grind the teeth with an angle grinder, cut to 3-4 cm in length and weld a usual nut to the end, in which the machine saw will be clamped by means of the second nut and bolt.

When making such an adapter, pay special attention to its length. If it will be too big, the nut will hit the bottom of the table top, which can lead to a breakage of the tool.

When the saw is clamped in both mounts, it only remains to produce its tensioning and start working. Implementation of such a function is simple. Fix the spring to the back of the moving arm with a bolt and nut, and fix the opposite part to the table top to the required length. Determining the tension is easy. To do this, just run your finger over the jigsaw, like a guitar string. A high sound will mean that the device is suitable for work.

At this stage, the assembly of the elementary device is considered complete. To better understand how to make a jigsaw, we recommend watching the following video.

A table electric jigsaw with your own hands

Recently I’ve become very interested in sawing with a jigsaw, I do not know why. It all started with the fact that I needed to cut some gears from plywood.

And here we go. At first I sawed the gears by hand, then I thought, it is certainly good to swing the hand jigsaw, but if you automate the process, it will be much faster!

So, to begin with, get acquainted with this hand jigsaw for artistic sawing.

(all pictures in this article are from the internet)

To saw, you need saws, they are thin as a wire, with sharp teeth. These saws used to be sold in packs of 50., I went into a store the other day, and these “bishops” started selling them by the piece. In an evening you can break a couple of pieces of these saws.

For sawing we also need a special table, it can be a board with a cone slit, screwed to the table with screws or clamping.

For ease of attachment of saws in the machine is better to use a special device that will squeeze the contour of the jigsaw, so you can easily change the saw without effort. A wooden eccentric is used to squeeze.

And now about automation. In the following photo you see a table electric jigsaw factory type, on the Internet you can find a sea of different modifications. It costs a lot, but even if I really want to in my town I can not find such a thing, and in principle there is no need.

Industrial machines is certainly good, but I’m likely to use them a couple of months and give up the activity, and in general such a machine tool, as I have learned can easily assemble itself from plywood and wooden bars.

The following photo uses an industrial hand jigsaw and a spring to return the saw blade.

So, we can easily assemble a table electric jigsaw with our own hands at home. I personally did so, but I have a special design, in this article there are no pictures of me, but I will definitely lay out, as well as video in the work.

This is a home-built jigsaw, although much of what is shown here can be reworked to your liking.

The table for the jigsaw

To work with the jigsaw was more comfortable, and the cutting line came out smoother, many craftsmen combine it with a small stand, turning this symbiosis into a convenient mini-workbench. The jigsaw is installed in the table from the underside, so that the saw is directed upwards, passing through a specially prepared hole. The start button of the tool is fixed, and the operator quietly saws the workpiece, controlling it with both hands. This tool allows you to saw more accurately and is great for convenient work with large volumes of material.

Make an elementary table for a jigsaw with their own hands is simple enough, both for an experienced craftsman, and for a beginner. For the assembly suit any more or less suitable materials with which you can work. If you only have a saw and an electric screwdriver, make it out of chipboard or thick plywood. Owners of grinders and welding machines, can afford to make a mini workbench from metal sheets and tubes. Such a device can be made even from plastic, if there is a way to securely fix the material. As a clear example, we will give a guide for the assembly of a small table made of thick plywood.

To assemble a simple table for an electric jigsaw with their own hands, drawings are generally not required, as the dimensions of such a product everyone chooses for themselves individually. As an illustrative example, here is a fairly miniature box with the size of all its sides. Based on these data, you can estimate and choose the optimal aspect ratio for your future product.

Connect the parts to be made with the usual self-tapping screws, screwed into the edges of the walls of the table top. If the material used has no lacquer coating, to strengthen the fixation, you can use PVA glue. This design will be stronger, but it can not be dismantled.

Tip. Before screwing the finished surface to the base, you should in advance mark and drill a hole in it for the saw. Then, on the opposite side attach the sole of the jigsaw, to make marks in its grooves for fixing, and then drill. It is more convenient to perform such manipulations on a clean surface, which will only have to be screwed to the walls.

As a base, you can use a workbench or other, more or less suitable piece of furniture. The author of the following video clip, made a table to work with an electric jigsaw from an old nightstand, installing a switch and a dust outlet in it.
