How To Clean A Propane Tank Fot Safe Cutting

How to proceed

  • Release the remaining gas from the cylinder. Open the valve all the way to make sure there are no gas residues. In the absence of sounds, the outlet of the valve is soaped and the void of the container is assessed by the presence (absence) of “bubbles”.
  • Place the container on its side. It is much more convenient to cut a gas cylinder this way.
  • Cut off the valve. To do this, they take a hacksaw for metal and cut the brass element with it as close as possible to the place where it joins with the main container. It is advisable to use the help of a second person who, while you are sawing, pours water over the cut to avoid sparks. Cutting the valve with a hacksaw is preferable to an angle grinder, however, it does not exclude the possibility of arcing by 100%.
  • Fill the bottle with water. After removing the valve with a funnel and a hose, the container is filled with liquid. As the volume is filled, the cylinder must be shaken to remove the remaining condensate from the walls. Pour water to the top.
  • Drain the water. It is best to do this away from the living area as propane residues have a strong unpleasant odor. You can endure it, but the place of the drain will smell for at least a week.
  • Start sawing the container. To do this, the user equips an angle grinder and cuts metal. The thickness of the latter rarely exceeds 4 mm, so the angle grinder will cope with the cylinder in 15-20 minutes.

To minimize the risk of sparking when cutting the angle grinder, do not wait for the inside of the cylinder to dry, but start working immediately after draining the water. Residual liquid on the walls envelops the propane particles (if it remains), and also serves as a “lubricant” for the cutting wheel, softening its operation.

What is needed

Despite the variety of ways to use an empty gas container, the principle of operation is similar in each case. The preliminary stage includes the procurement of tools and equipment, namely:

  • hacksaws for metal;
  • angle grinder with cutting disc;
  • construction funnel;
  • watering hose;
  • pump, compressor;
  • buckets;
  • the empty gas cylinder.

You may not need a pump or compressor. it all depends on how you fill the container with water. Now. about everything in order.

After completing the installation, you should test the stove. In this case, you must wait until the paint dries.

Features of connecting the stove to a gas cylinder

Connecting a gas stove to a cylinder should begin with choosing a place to store a container with fuel and organizing its supply through a pipe or flexible hose to the place of consumption. It is necessary to determine in advance which gas is supposed to be used. balloon or natural.

How to Cut a Gas Cylinder Safely

Preparation of tools and consumables

To properly connect the gas pipe, you should prepare the room and the necessary set of tools and consumables. It is imperative to equip exhaust ventilation.

To carry out the work, you must prepare the following tools:

  • wrench (adjustable gas or 22×24 mm);
  • gas cock according to GOST R 52057-2003;
  • gas supply hose;
  • fluoroplastic tape (FUM) or plumbing thread.

Examples of using cut gas cylinders

Parts of the balloon can be used for a wide variety of purposes. Examples include the following cases:

  • Furnace body.
  • Liquid storage tanks.
  • Mangala.
  • Smoking.

Gas cylinder oven

The scope is extensive, but it should be borne in mind that the metal is not characterized by high corrosion resistance. An exception can be called a propane gas cylinder, which is covered with paint using a special technology.

To carry out the work in question, a certain set of tools is required. Typically, cutting is done with an angle grinder. Other required tools are as follows:

properly, cylinder
  • Gas and open-end wrench for operating the valve. In order to remove all gas from the container, open the valve completely.
  • A hacksaw for metal is also used for cutting, for example, in the case of cutting a neck. It is worth paying attention to the correct choice of a suitable cutting blade, as too soft metal leads to rapid grinding of the teeth.
  • Water is used to clean the surface. It is usually poured into a container.

When working with an angle grinder, be careful as the wheel comes into contact with a small area. In addition, protective goggles should be used at the time of cutting, as a large number of fragments and combustible abrasives are formed.

Gas Cylinder Cutting Angle Grinder

For an angle grinder, it is important to choose the most suitable wheel. This is because the inappropriate abrasive wheel can quickly grind off. Before each cutting, check the integrity of the nozzle, its secure attachment. Cutting without protective cover is not allowed.

What to look for?

There are a few things to keep in mind when cutting. The main ones are:

  • Cutting must be carried out with special protection applied.
  • Seam work is easier, but often the markings do not match. When cutting on a circular plane, you need to put a slight load on the angle grinder, since the small contact area leads to slipping of the nozzle.
  • Many problems arise with removing rust and paint.

In general, we can say that the cutting process does not create significant problems.

How to proceed?

After everything you need has been purchased or found, you can proceed to the direct work. The sequence of actions, as a rule, is as follows:

  • The valve opens fully to completely release the gas. Do not forget that even a small amount of such a substance can lead to its fire or explosion. In addition, all clothing can become saturated with harmful odors. You can make sure that there is no more gas left in the container by covering the valve with a soapy composition. It is possible to drain the remaining gasoline only after completely unscrewing the valve and removing it, which is not recommended in the presence of pressure.
  • The next step is to unscrew the valve, after which the pins holding the element are removed. Removing this locking mechanism is quite difficult in some cases, but if possible, a diameter of 6 mm is formed. If the valve cannot be unscrewed, then you can cut it off using a conventional metal hacksaw. You can reduce the likelihood of fire by supplying water to the cutting area, for which it is enough to use a regular hose.
  • After that, the gas tank is filled with water. This is required in order to remove any residual gas that may remain in a half-closed container. The resulting gasoline solution can be safely discharged, since it is absolutely safe and cannot ignite.
  • It should be borne in mind that the resulting liquid has a persistent and rather pungent odor. That is why it is recommended to drain it away from the structure. To speed up the process, you can supply compressed air to the gas container.
  • After complete cleaning of the container, you can start cutting directly. For this, the surface is marked, for which you can use chalk. Many cut welds because they are less tough.
  • Before work, it should be borne in mind that in most cases, steel with a thickness of 3-4 mm is used in the manufacture of a gas cylinder. At the joints, this indicator increases to 5-6 mm. Almost any angle grinder can handle this task.
  • To simplify your own task, you can prematurely pass the angle grinder when using a disc with a thickness of 1.6 mm. By using a wider blade, it is possible to eliminate the possibility of jamming of the nozzle, which will be used for the final cut.
  • Some thicker elements can be cut and then cut with a chisel and hammer. Due to this, the cutting process is accelerated, but the quality of the resulting cut is significantly reduced.

The cutting methods discussed are used so that the gas cylinder can be reused in the manufacture of a wide variety of products. If after cutting it, a pungent smell remains, then the inner surface is burned with a blowtorch. After such processing, the body will be ready for further use.

How to cut a propane cylinder

After the old propane gas cylinder has become unusable, do not rush to throw it away. In some cases, it can be used to make various products with your own hands, for which it is often cut. A similar process is characterized by a rather large number of features, which we will talk about in more detail below.

How to cut a balloon safely

In the manufacture of a gas cylinder from propane or other gas, rather high quality metal is often used. That is why many are considering the possibility of cutting it to obtain blanks, which are later used to create various products. When considering how to cut a gas cylinder, it is recommended that you pay attention to the following points:

  • The body can be a good blank when making a stove, water tank or barbecue.
  • Before carrying out work directly, the oxygen gas cylinder should be emptied, since the gas at its high concentration is not only flammable, but also explosive. Therefore, check the filling of the gas cylinder before cutting.
  • With oxygen and carbon dioxide gas cylinders, as a rule, there are no significant problems. This is due to the fact that ordinary iron is used in their manufacture.
  • With propane gas cylinders, quite serious problems can arise. This is due to the fact that it is quite difficult to empty them completely; this requires preliminary preparation.

Explosion of a gas cylinder

Before starting work, you also need to prepare the required set of tools. As a rule, it can be found in almost any garage and workshop.

Rules to be followed during cutting

The rules for using an angle grinder in this case does not differ much from what is also when carrying out other work. The main ones are:

  • Work must be carried out in special clothing made of non-combustible material. Do not work with open areas of the skin, as if fragments get in, a burn may appear.
  • Before cutting, you should pay attention to the condition of the disc: the degree of wear, the presence or absence of defects, and much more.
  • Cutting must be carried out exclusively with protective goggles. Cutting creates a large number of debris that can get into the eyes and cause injury.
  • Only use an angle grinder with a protective cover.
  • When cutting metal, it is recommended to stand to the side of the cutting line.
  • In some cases, cutting is divided into several stages. When cutting for a long time, the bit used may cause it to heat up. Too high temperature leads to increased wear rate.

In addition, ”cutting should only be carried out when the gas container is completely emptied. This is due to the fact that even a small amount of gas can lead to detonation.

When cutting, a large number of fragments are formed, which will immediately ignite the combustible mixture.

Hello my dear friends and distinguished guests!
Frankly, I have come across a couple of times questions about how you can cut this or that balloon. These are both oxygen and propane cylinders.
I have little experience in this weird business. I will share it with you, maybe it will come in handy for someone.

So. I cut propane cylinders, five of them. The first, like the subsequent ones, is confident and not afraid of anything. The point is probably that the smell of gas scares us.
But few people know that this is not entirely true, or rather not at all. The gas itself is practically odorless. But the “aroma” from it comes due to the fact that a certain ingredient is added to the gas (ethyl mercaptan is added to the gas for the smell),
so that a person smells the smell and realizes that there is a gas leak, there is a danger of fire or explosion!
Now that we have dealt with the smell, we begin the process of cutting the balloon.
For example, we will cut the Chinese. But at the slightest spark there will be an explosion! Residual gas will explode, even if the cylinder is empty.
What to do? How to get rid of gas residues? Wash? Steaming? Or else how?

I solved this problem in a very simple way. What do we have? GAS. We need to get rid of it, but what if we displace the gas? But with what? And the most common and safe solvent. WATER!
It will collect and absorb the rest of the gas, completely neutralizing it.
Once everything is thought out. we begin!
We take an old and preferably empty bottle. And AVITO does not sell others! We take it out into an open field and turn off the valve.
It is advisable not to smoke at this moment, not to be near the fire or open fire, and not to stand in front of the gas outlet from the cylinder.
The first and second will lead you to a hospital bed, in the latter case, you will “smell” for at least a week.
Well, okay, we bleed off the rest of the gas. Then, with pliers, very carefully pull out the pins that secure the valve, secured from complete eversion.
I bit off the flattened part of the pin, and pulled the pin itself by the cap. Metal is soft and pliable.
Next, we unscrew the valve completely and discard it, we do not need it.

And what do we see? OH MOUNTAIN! The hole is only 6 mm! How to pour 50 liters of water there?

If your old propane or oxygen cylinder has fallen into disrepair, and it is a pity to throw it away, you can try using it in a subsidiary farm. The body can serve as a good blank for a stove, smokehouse, barbecue, water tank. Before that, it must be freed of gas residues and cut correctly. To do this, you need to follow a certain procedure.

Oxygen and carbon dioxide cylinders do not pose any problems. after bleeding off the remaining gas, these are ordinary pieces of iron, which are calmly cut by an angle grinder without any preliminary preparations. With propane, it’s already a little more complicated, and the question often arises: how to cut a gas cylinder of an angle grinder? Even with the valve fully open, all the gas will not escape, and the remaining amount will be enough for a small explosion or fire. Therefore, the cylinder must be prepared in advance. For this we need the following tools:

  • Open-end or gas valve wrench.
  • Hacksaw for metal.
  • Funnel, watering hose, buckets or other source of water.
  • angle grinder with different disc thicknesses and safety goggles.

After that, you can start working. We perform all actions in strict sequence to avoid undesirable consequences.

  • We completely bleed the gas by opening the valve. It is strictly forbidden to be near the outgoing jet at this moment. In addition to the fire hazard, all clothing can smell of gas. We check the presence of pressure in the cylinder using a soapy solution, soaping the valve and watching for bubbles.
  • After that, you can start unscrewing the valve. Next steps: carefully remove the pins securing the valve and try to unscrew with a key. On old cylinders, this is not always possible, but if we are lucky, a hole with a diameter of 6 mm will open to us. If the valve does not lend itself, then we simply cut it off with a hacksaw for metal. It is advisable that at this moment someone supply you with water to the place of the cut, or simply direct the jet from the hose. This is necessary to prevent the formation of sparks.
  • Now you can fill the bottle with water through the hole obtained using a funnel or a thin hose. This is called degassing. Water is heavier than any gas, so it displaces residues and dissolves condensate. The resulting gasoline solution is non-flammable and can be safely drained.
  • It is better to drain the water not near the house, but somewhere in the landfill because of the strong and persistent smell of gas. If the valve did not cut off, and the filling went through a small hole, you can supply compressed air to the cylinder to speed up the process. It will create excess pressure and the liquid will flow out in a good stream.
  • Now that most of the liquid has been drained, you can start marking and cutting the balloon. Most often, cutting is done along the welded seams, but for an individual project, you can cut in any direction. The average wall thickness is 3–4 mm, and at the joints 5–6 mm. Any angle grinder can handle this thickness without any problems. To facilitate the work, you can first walk through the cut with a 1.6 mm thick disc, and finally saw through with a thinner disc. This prevents the disc from getting stuck at the exit and breaking it, which could lead to injury. In addition, this cutting method is more economical and faster. During work, do not forget about protective equipment.
  • Sometimes it may be necessary to remove the connecting ring between the straight and convex part. To do this, the ring itself is cut by an angle grinder in one place, and then it is cut down with a hammer and chisel.
  • The cylinder stand at the bottom is removed as follows. the angle grinder slightly notches the weld seam, usually it is secured with dots, while being careful not to damage the cylinder itself. Then the ring is knocked out with a hammer and chisel, the remnants of welding are cleaned.
  • If, after opening the cylinder, a strong smell of gas remains inside, it will need to be burned from the inside with a gas torch or blowtorch. After that, the cylinder body becomes absolutely harmless and can be used in everyday life.

The most difficult operation is over, now it is necessary to remove the old paint and rust. A flap emery attachment for the same angle grinder works well for this. Now the blank from the cylinder is ready for further priming and painting.

In this way, you can easily, and most importantly, safely cut gas cylinders of any size and type, with the exception of acetylene cylinders, consisting of a special filler.
