How to properly put a fishing line on a grass trimmer

How to replace the fishing line on a trimmer?

Replacing the grass trimmer line with step-by-step instructions will allow even the inexperienced in such matters lawnmower owner to perform quite a complex job.

However, before you begin work on replacing the fishing line on your trimmer, you need to ensure that the work is done safely. In particular, measures should be taken to protect against careless or spontaneous activation of the mower:

  • to exclude spontaneous triggering,
  • Remove the battery (if applicable),
  • Place the tool on a comfortable place for work.

Grass trimmer line replacement work is convenient to perform when the mower is lying on the table and the master, who performs grass trimmer line replacement, has the opportunity to step up to the tool from any side.

Grass trimmer head cover removal

The first stage of disassembly is removing the cover of the grass trimmer head. Using the Black and Decker trimmer models and others as an example, to remove the cover it is usually sufficient to apply some pressure to release the locking latch, which is located on the side of the head housing.

On some models of lawnmowers initially provides for the dismantling of the grass trimmer head, for which the hexagonal key included in the tool kit is used. The head is usually held by two or three screws, which are accessed through the side holes of the back decorative cover.

The head cap, where the filament spool is mounted, is normally retained by the clip tongue. It is enough to press the reel button and turn the cover a little, after that the cover is easily taken off

At the moment of squeezing the locking tab, you need to slightly turn and lift the cover of the grass trimmer head to remove the winding drum.

Step two: Removing the spool with the line

The next step in the process is to remove the spool with the line from the inner area of the head. Turn the open side of the head to see the line and spool. On the side of the head, find two recesses (eyelets) through which the line is led out.

Release the fishing line from the holes by turning the reel. Then carefully remove the spool from the head area. The winding reel of some models is mounted on a spring. This point must be taken into account when performing the extraction operation.

The old line is completely removed from the spool. To remove the old line of the grass trimmer, you need to remove the line from the loops and pull the free end. This method removes all old winding. The same process is repeated on the second section of the reel. The technician should wear gloves when performing this operation.

Reeling in the line

Slowly completed disassembly of the bobbin spool without losing its parts allows you to proceed to the main task. winding the line into the spool. Technological features of the bobbin design and the number of working tendrils determine the sequence of operations.

Reel with one operating tendril

The simplest option and uncomplicated sequence of actions:

  • Size of the reel and length of the original reel determine the recommended length of the line for reeling. 2-5 m.
  • One end of the line is inserted through the locking technological hole on the inside of the bobbin.
  • The line is wound on the reel in the opposite direction to the turn of the bobbin on the trimmer, usually on the inside of the reel an arrow points in which direction the line is wound.
  • Small part of the line is left free to be wound outside and is fixed in the groove on the inside of the bobbin to keep it in place while bobbin is being assembled in working position.
  • The leftover end of the line is passed through the hole on the outside of the bobbin.
  • Half a bobbin is assembled and put on the trimmer’s boom.

Reel with two working clamps

In this type of bobbins, you should determine the number of grooves for winding the line lying on the inside of the spool:

For both cases, a 2 to 3 m length of fishing line is used. In single-cable spools the line is pulled through the through hole, its ends (tendrils) are put together and aligned, and then reeled in the opposite direction to the rotation of the bobbin on the rod inside the arrow usually indicates the correct reeling direction. If there are fixing grooves, the ends of the fishing line are pushed through them or held by fingers of free hand, put into the through hole of the outer half of the bobbin, bobbin is closed and fastened to the rod of the trimmer product.

The difference between winding the line on a dual reel is that initially a 2-5 meter length of line is folded in half (to determine the middle fold), and the loop of the fold is inserted into a special groove between the grooves. Both line tendrils are wound each on their own groove, fixing the tendrils and reassembling the spool is similar to the above version with one groove.

The first performance of this procedure may seem long and quite time consuming, but with time and experience, this task will be solved much faster and easier.

The video below will clearly show you how to tuck the line into the grass trimmer reel and properly wind it. this operation is nothing complicated and with some patience will definitely succeed:

How to change the line on your trimmer

The grass trimmer is a handy and easy-to-use tool for cutting grass and trimming small bushes and trees. A fishing line (string or cord) is often used as a cutting element because it costs less than blades and is safer to use. Extensive use over time will make it necessary to change the line on your trimmer. This process is similar on mowers from different manufacturers, whether Husqvarna or Huter, with possible minor differences.

Removing and disassembling the spool

To correctly wind the line on the grass trimmer spool, it is necessary to get acquainted with the structure of the trimmer head. It consists of a protective cover, a bobbin with thread, a housing cover, and a spring, which is present only in some devices.

Before you disassemble the coil, you must turn it off and disconnect all power. In this case, the way of carrying out the work directly depends on the type of head. The first option is to carry out the following steps:

  • The user presses the catches located on both sides of the cover.
  • After removing the cover, the bobbin is removed. In some models, there may be a spring, which must also be removed.
  • In the center of the housing there is a screw, which should be unscrewed with an ordinary screwdriver.
  • When the fasteners are removed, it remains to remove the gearbox from the shaft, gently rocking the body of the product.

The second option for removing the spool for filling the line in the grass trimmer is to twist the head on the gear shaft. To carry out this procedure, many devices are equipped with a hole into which you can insert a tool. When the screwdriver is inserted, the user has only to take hold of the product body and twist it clockwise. It is noteworthy that this method, unlike the previously described method, is characterized by the simplicity of execution.

How to wind the fishing line on the grass trimmer

Do you have a garden, a vegetable garden, a bed or a lawn outside the house? Then you must surely have a trimmer for grass. a hand-held trimmer to nicely trim the grass and remove weeds more often. The technique is convenient, practical and reliable, it requires little maintenance. Difficulties may arise when it is necessary to change cutting tools. They are different for grass trimmers. lines and disks, depending on the hardness of the mowed vegetation.

The brushcutter cutting line is an expendable material, it wears out and wears down while working. Then you have to put a new. How to correctly select and install the cutting materials and how to change the line on the trimmer on the disk will tell this article.

Types of trimmer heads

Mowing head for grass is a cylindrical body, in which a spool (bobbin) is inserted with a fishing line (cord) tucked into it. This design can be installed on both gasoline and electric trimmers. Heads differ in the way the line is threaded and fed and are available in 3 types.

  • Automatic. The filament feed is performed after the user lowers the engine speed. Although automatic line feed is convenient if you do a lot of work, but these bobbins have one disadvantage. a high consumption of thread.
  • Semi-automatic. Using this type of head does not require the user to perform complex manipulations. The way they work is that the cord is extended automatically while the machine is running at full speed. It is enough to slightly knock the grass trimmer head on the ground (this removes the cord lock), and the line thanks to the centrifugal force is pulled out of the bobbin, and then cut to the desired length by the knife, located on the protective cover.
  • Manual. The cord extension requires the machine to stop and the line is pulled out manually.

On the basis of the above, semi-automatic bobbins are the best option. It should also be borne in mind that the grass trimmer reels can be single string (used only for grass trimming) and double string, which are used for mowing tall grass and small, with thin stems of bushes.

How to tuck the line into the grass trimmer reel

To change the line in your trimmer, cut a piece of material of the right size by folding it in half. One half should be 5-10 cm longer than the other.

To properly wind the fishing line on the spool, the middle of the thread, folded in a loop, should be placed in the groove of the central partition. One half of the line is wound tightly around the upper part and the other half around the lower part. The longer part is wound onto the lower one. Wind it in the opposite direction to the direction of rotation of the head. There should be an arrow on the cover or on the side of the head which shows the direction of rotation. You must wind the fishing line in the opposite direction of the arrow. Do the work carefully, firmly pressing the coil against the coil.

Insert the remaining 10-15 cm of the coil ends into the slots on the top edge of the coil to secure them. With the ends secure, the spool will not unwind.

If you don’t have enough line of the right length, you can reel in two pieces of line instead of one. In this case, bend the end of the line with a hook and insert it in the slit of the center bobbin’s divider. Do the same with the second piece. Now wind first one piece, and then the other on their halves of the coil against its direction of rotation.

To tuck the line into the grass trimmer, insert the ends into the holes in the mowing head and pull them out. Push down the spool on the shaft until it clicks into place, and then pull again on the thread ends to pull out the full length of the thread.

The line should extend all the way out to just above the blade guard. Cut off the excess. To do this, you can use the steel plate mounted on the hood which acts as a knife and automatically cuts the excess length of line when the head unwinds.

The spool is covered with a protective cap. Reinsert the spool and press it down until the catches click into the grooves. Always check that the cover is properly engaged in the grass trimmer and that the latches are properly engaged, otherwise the cover could come off during operation. In this case, the bobbin will be thrown by the spinning action.

Do not try to wrap as much material as possible in this case the coil may not fit in place and there will be problems with fitting and fixing the lid. It is better if the spool is filled with fishing line so that it does not exceed the dimensions of the part.

In addition to mechanical scythes with two blades, there are also models with one. They differ in that the cutting filament only comes out on one side. In these types of scythes reel may not have a central partition, instead of it a slot in the lower flange is used for setting the nonworking end of the thread, in the upper flange there is also a slot for fixation of the working end.

With a changed filament, you can now start to work. Do not mow thick weeds and bush twigs. this is not a job for a grass mower. To reduce the risk of injuries and line breakage, do not allow stones or branches to get under the mower.

For lawn mowing, one filling of a reel with reinforced line is enough for an area of 400-600 m2.

Once the cutting filament has been worn out, turn the mower off and remove the cover on the mowing head. Remove the scaffolding by pulling it to the required length from the slots, and reinsert it into the slots. The amount of material wound on the spool is enough for 5-10 cycles of work, depending on the model of the device. When you put the cover back on, look carefully to see if the grooves where the retainers are inserted are clogged, if they are, clean them thoroughly.

When the line has worn out, you need to disassemble the mowing head again, pull out the spool and rewind the working line on it.

How to remove the reel from a grass trimmer and remove the fishing line

Initially, before you tuck the fishing line into the grass trimmer reel, you need to remove it from there. The spool or guide is a device that is located inside the mowing head, reel or drum. There are different kinds of heads (depending on the manufacturer), but the principle of changing the line on the spool is the same for all. First of all, let’s figure out how to remove the head from the tool, as well as how to get the reel with the fishing line out of it.

This is interesting! The tooling can be replaced directly on the tool, but if doing it for the first time, it is still recommended to remove the head, and study the detailed process of winding. Once you’ve mastered the technique, you can do the replacement work on your brushcutter or chain saw.

The instructions on how to unscrew the manual head on the trimmer is as follows:

  • Turn the tool upside down and clean off any dirt if necessary. Grasp with two fingers of one hand the locks of the cover (on the mowing head), which are located symmetrically to each other. After lightly pressing them in, remove the protective cover from the drum
  • Next, the spool for the fishing line should be removed from the shaft of the drum. The cover is attached to the shaft without any fasteners and can therefore be removed with one hand
  • The main part of the drum is fixed with a screw, which must be unscrewed with a screwdriver with a suitable tip or a bit
  • To unscrew, hold the base of the drum with one hand and unscrew in counterclockwise direction with the screwdriver with the other hand
  • You can now disassemble it. It is not necessary to pull it with all your might, but to wiggle it slightly to the sides and slowly disengage it from the metal shaft on which the drum is seated
  • When reinstalling, fit the head into the slots of the square shaped head

The process is not difficult, and as you can imagine, there is no need to remove the entire head if you know how to do the replacement. Keep in mind these nuances when disassembling:

  • Periodic removal of the head is recommended to prevent corrosion of the threaded joint. If you have never unscrewed a screw, it can be difficult or even impossible to unscrew it when needed
  • If the screw has a square drive head, a screwdriver or suitable size drill bit must be used to remove the screw, in order to prevent the facets on the drive head from sticking together
  • When assembling the system the threaded seating should be coated with a lubricant such as solidol or machine oil
  • If the facets on the screw have slipped off, you can use special clamping pliers to unscrew it
  • There are reels that do not require prior disassembly. To disassemble them, you should take hold of it, and rotate it in the opposite direction of the clockwise direction

Knowing how to disassemble the reel, you should continue to figure out the process of replacing the grass trimmer line. The video below shows the detailed process of how to open the grass trimmer reel and disassemble it.

Removing the reel from the grass trimmer

On small electric trimmers with a bottom-mounted motor (when it is at the ground when working), the spool usually has two keys on the sides. Press them and disconnect one half of the spool body from the other half, which remains on the trimmer. Together with the first half, the inner part, on which the line is wound directly, is also taken out. Be careful when disassembling: there is a spring inside that can come out and get lost.

On electric and gasoline trimmers with a bent rod (such trimmers are not yet possible to put a knife) you need to embrace the body of the reel with one hand, and the second hand should start turning counterclockwise the wing nut it has. This is the one that attaches the spool to the grass trimmer rod. After unscrewing the thumbscrew, carefully remove the entire coil, taking care not to lose the spring inside.

On electric and gasoline trimmers with a straight bar and gearbox at its end (in such trimmers for grass in addition to the line can be set and a knife) are looking for a hole under the spool, we put in it, for example, a screwdriver, quietly turn the spool, until the screwdriver will not get deeper, and the spool will be fixed. Now turn the whole spool clockwise (since the thread is left) and remove it from the grass trimmer. Next, we disassemble the spool. It can be assembled with snaps or twisted with a wingnut. If the coil is on the latches, then press on the sides of the latches base so that they will bend and release one half of the coil body from the other. The wing nut is simply unscrewed. There can also be a third type of connection between the two halves of such a coil: in this case you need to grab the lower part with one hand and the upper part with the other and start turning them in opposite directions. Disassembling such a spool, you must also ensure that the spring inside is not lost.
