How to Put a Chain On a Chainsaw Correctly

The guarantee of a long service life of a chainsaw can be not so much the power characteristics of the tool as the proper way to use and compliance with the rules for handling it. This primarily relates to the chain. Proper care of it will help maintain cutting qualities for more than one decade. It implies not only compliance with the technology of working with the tool, you also need to carefully select the oil for the chainsaw chain, which is recommended to be used regularly.

How to Put a Chain On a Chainsaw Correctly

How to choose a chain

Choosing a chain will help study their typology. Important criteria for differences are:

    Tooth pitch. This parameter is measured in inches. The most common sizes are considered 0.325, 0.375 and 0.404. Each of them is selected depending on the tasks. The smaller the specified parameter, the less productivity will be, which means that you will not need to put a lot of effort. Therefore, it is necessary to purchase a chain whose power would correspond to a chainsaw.

How to install a chain

The long life of the device is possible not only subject to careful selection of components for it, the installation of the chain on a chainsaw should also be correct. In addition, sooner or later, chain replacement may be required. In this case, it is necessary to think about safety, in particular, to carry out work in special protective gloves. To "dress" the saw, you need to perform actions in the following sequence:

Why does the chain fly and break

If a chain flies from a chainsaw or it breaks, it means that the device has some kind of malfunction, in normal conditions it should not do this. There are three reasons why a chain flies:

Most problems can be solved by repair. Only in exceptional cases will you have to change it.

How to shorten the chain with your own hands

You can repair the chainsaw chain with your own hands, subject to the availability of a special tool (most often comes with a saw). Most often, you need to shorten it, especially if it is stretched. It is difficult to do, but possible. To repair it by shortening, you need to prepare the following tools:

Some work can be done with a welding machine, if there are doubts about one’s own strength.

To shorten the chain on a chainsaw, you need to rivet it. Since it is made of durable steel, the process can be complicated. It connects to the inside of the rivet. The reduction is performed in the following sequence:

  1. Lock the part in a vise.
  2. Grind off the protruding part with a file or file.
  3. Knock out rivets with a beard.
  4. To do a similar job in one more place. This will allow riveting it.
  5. Remove links.
  6. Connect to old rivets, while they need to be pressed on the sides. The rivet can be welded to the side parts of the link, after which all excesses should be filed with a file.

Which oil to use for chain lubrication

This part requires constant lubrication, for which you can fill in special oil for the chainsaw, and it must be of high quality. It is recommended to choose oil for the lubrication of chains of chainsaws from the manufacturer of the saw itself. Its consumption is small, so you should not save on buying. But pouring liquid on the circuit itself is not necessary. There are entire lubrication systems to help it flow smoothly onto the tire.

There are other criteria for choosing a saw lubricant:

  • resistance to freezing, because sometimes you have to use a saw in the winter, including lubricating it with oil, which means that it should not freeze at low temperatures;
  • optimal viscosity of the oil for the chain;
  • the oil that is used must not leave a residue on candles and other spare parts;
  • lack of impurities.

Change the chain oil if the part heats up and various breakdowns occur.

Chain Lubrication Scheme

The chain saw lubrication system consists of the following elements:

  • oil tank, which is located in the crankcase;
  • filter in the tank;
  • oil pipe, that is, a hose of small diameter;
  • oil pump.

Chainsaws are equipped with an automatic lubrication system. This means that the oil enters the chain only when the latter comes in contact with wood. The scheme of the system is as follows. The gear, which is located on the main shaft, drives the shaft of the oil pump. This creates pressure in the oil line, which makes the oil move towards the tire.

The oil channel ends at the place where the tire of the device contacts the crankcase of the chainsaw. The chain tension of the chainsaw for oil supply does not matter. She still lubricates herself.

No oil flows to the chain

The fact that the oil does not enter the circuit can be found by the following signs:

  • dry parts and lack of gloss;
  • its quick stretching;
  • heat;
  • lack of oil reduction from a tank;
  • decreased cutting efficiency.

To check whether or not there is an oil supply, you need to direct the end of the tire to the side and maximize the speed, while the end of the tire should be located at a distance of 10 cm from the tree.

If oil stains appear on the wood surface, then there is no problem with the oil supply. You may need to adjust the feed.

The reasons for the lack of oil supply can be:

Train tips

It is not enough to know how to solve problems with a broken or broken chain, because there is always the opportunity to prevent this. Proper care of the saw will help extend the life of the device and its parts. Therefore, it is recommended to follow the advice of specialists:

  1. Regularly clean the air filter and lubricate it with oil. The filter needs to be changed periodically.
  2. Every time before starting work, you need to check the tightness of all nuts and bolts. Then, during operation, the device will not fail.
  3. You need to lubricate both the bearings and the sprocket.
  4. Regularly clean candles from fumes.
  5. Lubricate, sharpen and tighten the chain in time.

A quality chainsaw, subject to proper care and timely repair, can last longer than the warranty period.

Features of the chainsaw device

The main part of a gasoline saw is engine. In most modern devices, the engine is single-cylinder. Air cooling, two-stroke piston system. Oil in these types of engines is added directly to gasoline, and all due to the fact that the fuel is constantly washing the crankcase. The oil-gasoline ratio varies from 1:20 to 1:50, depending on the manufacturer of the chainsaw.

An air filter on gasoline saws plays an equally important role. He needs regular cleaning. If you allow severe contamination of the filter, then the dust from it will fall directly into the piston system, which will lead to engine failure.

If the filter is clogged, the saw loses speed, and the engine starts to overheat, and this can lead to burning of the piston rings.

Many complain that it takes a long time to pull the rope to ignite the engine. It depends on whether the carburetor is correctly set. If the carburetor produces the correct oil-gasoline mixture, then there should be no problems.

The main working mechanism. a tire with a chain.

The chain consists of three types of teeth: leading, cutting and connecting. They are connected by rivets. The cutting teeth are located on two sides: right and left.

Chains are divided into two types: high-profile and low-profile. The first type includes chains in which the teeth are located with a large gap, and the second with a smaller gap. Also, chains can vary in shank thickness and link length. A chainsaw chain is attached to a tire that guides it in the right direction. The end face of the tire has a specific groove that holds the links and allows the chain to rotate. At the front of the tire is a driven sprocket. The chains along with the tire are called the headset, as they are removable parts of the chainsaw.

The gasoline saw has an automatic chain lubrication system. The tire delivers oil, which is then absorbed by the sawdust. If the saw is idling, the oil supply stops.

Why does the chain fly, find out the reasons

If you wondered why the chain on your chainsaw flies, then there are some problems in the mechanism. Exist three main reasons this problem: improper functioning of the tire, chain stretching and poorly fixed driven sprocket. We will analyze in more detail each of the possible causes of failure.

Tire problems

If you have problems with the bus almost always chain tension loosens. Typically, this problem occurs at the mounting location of the tire.

This place is located in the groove between the outer plate, which is located on the casing of the chain headset and the inner plate, located on the motor housing. The casing together with the tire is fixed with a bolt. Such a mount is called an “engine assembly”. The drive sprocket and tire mount are protected by special covers.

If the fixing bolts loosen, the tire begins to move or vibrate. If the tire is serviceable, then the chain tension should be normal. After stretching, she will walk for at least five working days without suspenders. Therefore, you need to properly tighten the bolts that hold the tire.

To understand how to pull a chain on a chainsaw, first you need find and lower the chain brake. The tension screw is located next to the tire, it is turned until the chain is pulled onto the tire. Then pull the chain in a clockwise direction. If it does not move, then you need to loosen it a little by turning the tension screw in the opposite direction.

Stretched chain

If your chain sags on a chainsaw, then this indicates a malfunction of some mechanism, one of the options is wear on the chain itself.

Over time, the metal is deformed and the chains become 0.5-1 cm longer. It’s best to fix this problem by buying a new chain, but there’s a way to get the old one back in. Experts say that it is very difficult and almost impossible, but we will tell you how to do it at home.

To do this, we will need:

  • vise;
  • file;
  • electric welding machine (not needed in all cases);
  • hammer;
  • pliers;
  • beard.

An ordinary chainsaw chain is made of strong steel, so it is difficult to disconnect it. You need to disconnect the chain on the inside of the rivet, which serves as a connecting mechanism.

First you need to fix the chains in a vice, and then gradually grind the protruding part. You need to file with a file or file. Angle grinder is not recommended, as there is a risk of damage to the side parts of the links. After grinding, the rivets are knocked out with a beard. Knocked out rivets should not be thrown away. You may not be able to find a replacement for her. Manufacturers of gasoline saws do not produce separate parts for the chain, as they do not assume that consumers will be able to repair the chain themselves. Most likely, you will not be able to make a new rivet yourself, so you will have to install the old one.

In order to shorten the chain, you need to split it in two places. But remember, that the number of guides on the inside of the chain and the distance between them must be combined with the drive sprocket.

After removing one or more links (depending on the degree of chain stretching), the chains can be joined. We connect to the old rivets, while tightly press them on the sides.

Next, we need a welding machine. The rivet must be welded to the side parts of the link. After that, file off the excess that was formed when working with welding with a file. The chain can be considered good again.

Drive sprocket loose

One possible option for a sagging circuit on your device is a problem with a leading asterisk. Most often, everything happens due to the fact that the star is poorly fixed. Now we will tell you how to properly fix the star and then put the chain on a chainsaw.

First you need to remove the engine cover. Next, remove the protective cover of the candle, pull out the air filter. Then with a special key you need to unscrew the candle. A special stopper is placed in its place, which fixes the piston in a certain position. Using a special key (you can use a universal key for an angle grinder), turn the clutch disc clockwise until the piston reaches its highest position. If you look into the hole of the candle, the piston should remain at the bottom. As a stopper, you can use a thick rope, it is better to fold it several times. After fixing, you can clamp the drive sprocket by scrolling the clutch disc counterclockwise.

After clamping, you need to do everything in the reverse order, that is, collect the chainsaw. A chain is put on the tire, it must fall on the leading sprocket that holds it. The tire is placed in special holes for fastening and bolted. Then protection is put.

How to tighten: installing the cutting element of the chainsaw

The main reasons for the sagging chain we have examined. How to install a chain on a chainsaw is described in paragraph above. Now you need to properly tighten the chains, and check whether he will pull.

Chain tension

You can pull the chains two ways: fast and frontal. It is best to stretch the frontal way.

If you carry out a front stretch, you need to unscrew the nuts that hold the tire, and lift it by the edge. With a special bolt located on the right, you need to tension the chains until an acceptable tension is obtained, and then raise the tire even higher and clamp it.

If you use the quick tension method, first you need to raise the wing nut handle and loosen it. Then tighten the chain tension screw fully clockwise. Then tighten the wing nut again and lower the handle.

Tension check

To check the chain tension, it is necessary to disconnect the brake system of the saw. Then manually draw the chains along the bus, if it walks smoothly and does not sag, then everything is fine. If the chains go very tight, then it needs to be loosened a little, because there is a risk of a break during operation.

Modern types of chainsaws allow owners to do the job without much effort. The work will be performed efficiently and in the shortest possible time if the chain is installed on the chainsaw on time and in full.

A chainsaw is used to cut wood.

The range of cutting tools is huge, so you need to purchase the best copies for comfortable work.

A chainsaw is used in construction, in the harvesting of wood, for the improvement of summer cottages and surrounding territories. This is a universal chain tool that works with a two-phase motor. Its cutting part is represented by a chain connected in a ring. Often, to create a rounded shape, it is composed of units having different shapes. The chain is mounted on a metal bar. Most models have a sprocket. The chain is part of the component parts for non-professional and special saws.

Professional chainsaws for sawing wood are equipped with chains in increments of 3/8 and 0.404 inches.

For an amateur instrument, chains having a pitch of 0.325 inches are used. The dimensions of an unprofessional caterpillar reduce vibration, but at the same time reduce the power of the tool.

High-quality devices for sawing wooden materials are equipped with chains with a pitch of 3/8 and 0.404 inches.

Since the caterpillar is the cutting part of the chainsaw, it is necessary to approach its selection and installation with all responsibility.

Back to the table of contents

Before buying an important element, it is necessary to study the main indicators characterizing it as an integral part of the cutting tool:

  • groove thickness;
  • chain pitch
  • total number of links.

Several main groups have been formed, combined with each other by parameters related to the chain pitch: 3/8 inch tracks are mounted on low-power saws, the groove thickness is 1.3 mm. The number of links depends on the length of the tire: 52 links fall at a distance of 32 cm, 56 links per 40 cm. On saw models from 350 to 401 cm, they do not put a tire of 645 cm.

To select the right track for other models, it is necessary to study the parameters of a previously operated chain.

Original models are characterized by the highest productivity. They are resistant to the effects of friction, are operated in adverse climatic conditions. Saw chains for chainsaws of all brands contain 50 leading links, 3/8 pitch, 1.3 mm groove. Sometimes choosing a chain involves several conditions:

Chainsaw chain device.

  • precise familiarization with the instructions for the motor saw;
  • knowledge of the characteristics of the saw chain;
  • counting the number of teeth;
  • study of step size between several links.

The chain has 52 leading links, a groove of 1.3 mm for a 35 cm tire.

a saw with 52 links has a pitch of 38, a groove of 1.3 mm for tires 36 cm, and for tires 10 cm the tool contains 72 links.

There are 3 types of tracks for the Poulan chainsaw. The 35 cm tire is equipped with a 52 link chain. The other two groups contain 56 and 62 links.

Russian products work with 40 cm tires (at 38 steps) and 57 main chain links.

For tools operated in extreme conditions, tracks made of metal alloys are used, giving them special strength.

Often, for the safe operation of the saw, it is only necessary to take care of the serviceability of all nodes of the mechanism. A correctly mounted caterpillar will prevent the possibility of injury, and its installation will not cause special problems for the master.

When it comes to mounting the circuit, you should prepare the tool for work in advance:

The chain should be well ground, then the work will be safe.

Operation will become safe if the chain is sharpened and well tensioned. However, it is not enough just to correctly install the chain on the chainsaw, you should regularly monitor the operating condition of the track.

At the beginning of work, the saw tire is inspected: it is fixed with a cover on the clutch.

When replacing the chain with a wrench, untwist the nuts securing the chain sprocket cover. Do not simultaneously release the tension of the chain brake device.

To perform dismantling, the brake stop is moved to the side. Pay attention to the holes through which the chain is tensioned.

The saw bar is moved to the left by touching the drive sprocket. Extreme attention is required from the worker: he makes sure that the teeth of the upper part of the chain are turned towards the sprocket. One part of the chain is attached to the leading part, and the shanks are fixed in the grooves of the tires.

The chain is tensioned as a result of adjustment with a screw that is attached to the surface of the clutch mechanism. After mounting the covers, slightly tighten the nuts. The saw bar is in the upper position, and the nuts are finally fixed. Check the free distance of the track on the tire. The drum should rotate very easily when the chain slides over the tire.

Slicing wood with a chainsaw tooth.

Installing the chain involves checking its tension after each refueling session. A poorly fixed part slides off the tire surface and injures the worker.

Inspect the tension with your hands, protecting them with mittens. In addition, new chains change their length during operation, so the check should be carried out very often.

Sometimes in the process of operation an important detail arises: it is not possible to install the circuit without additional heating and its corresponding deformation from the side of the lower part of the tire.

Back to the table of contents

Not a single working professional will ignore chain tension in a chainsaw. By slightly pulling the caterpillar, it instantly estimates the amount of chain stretching. The sound appearing at the moment of impact can be muffled and short.

Caterpillar tension is carried out sequentially, performing several simple operations. Inspect the fuel cock. The worker needs to make sure that the fuel system is blocked. You can remove the spark plug wiring or open the decompression valve. The plug of the saw is pulled out of the outlet. The chain is rotated in the direction of its rotation during operation.

File position when sharpening the chainsaw chain.

Chain tension defects are visually noticeable: lower sagging of the track is formed. Control is carried out by adjusting the circuit at certain time intervals. In the upper part of the shank there should be a constant supply, formed when the chain is pulled. With very strong pulling, the caterpillar barely turns and quickly stops its movement.

Chain adjustment in working position is not allowed. Such negligence leads to deformation of the tire or damage to the crankshaft.

The track tension during operation is carried out without tools. The maximum cutting depth is 390 mm, the weight of the cutting equipment is 9.4 kg.

To extend the life of the chain, tension is only carried out under favorable weather conditions.

Caterpillar links can only be lubricated with clean oil, preventing them from entering the ground and dirt.

With a long load on the saw, two chains should be used, alternating their work.

Back to the table of contents

To protect the working person from damage by a chainsaw, a brake device is used. With its help, the tool is stopped until the tire hits the body of the worker.

The device is a typical chainsaw.

The circuit stop depends on two conditions:

  • braking speed;
  • tool turn-on time.

The saw is launched using 2 methods: contact and inertial. To protect the operator from tossing the chainsaw, the brake is equipped with a shield, which rests the hand of the worker. Some saws have protective bars masking the cutting part of the tool.

Back to the table of contents

To solve the problem of sharpening the chain, special devices are used. The work is carried out based on the particular configuration of the tooth. At one of the cutting edges, the upper part is slightly beveled at an angle, therefore, in the process of intensive work, the operator needs to carry out 2-3 sharpening of the tool.

The interaction of the cutting edge with the ground blunts it, and the shavings change their size. The saw glides over the surface of the tree during operation. The main sign of a dull tool is an increase in the feed moment and the formation of small chips. When working with a blunt tool, the operator quickly gets tired, and the result of labor does not change for the better.

To work on grinding teeth prepare a tool:

  • flat file;
  • template;
  • sawdust hook;
  • holder

Given the contours of the tooth surface and the composition of the metal of the chain links, a round file is used for sharpening. The main condition for obtaining a good result is the correct location of the file when sharpening the tooth. Its upper part rises above the tooth face by 20% of the tool diameter. Hold the file at an angle of 90 ° vertically and at 30 °. horizontally.

The holder is attached to the tooth, and its tool tightly touches, allowing the file to be located at the height required for work.

Before starting work, it is necessary to fix the tire. The first file movements should be smooth, soft, with regular turns of the tool. First of all, the teeth are updated in one direction, and then the opposite elements should be sharpened.

It is necessary to evenly distribute the pressure on the teeth and make the same number of movements with a file.

The depth gauge is protected from grinding by the template, which is placed in the slot when an additional element is applied. Replacement of links during operation is not allowed, otherwise there may be a violation in the functioning of the saw. The use of special kits allows the correct sharpening of the tool with uniform processing of the edges of the tooth.

The general scheme of the operation consists of several points:

  • chain brake fixation;
  • mounting the tool according to the template;
  • designations of the first tooth;
  • direct process execution.

Correctly carried out installation of the chain on a tool for cutting wood will prevent technological losses, make the entire working process safe, and will allow you to cut wood without any problems for any purpose.

How to install a chain on a chainsaw

  • – combination key;
  • – straight screwdriver;
  • – thick gauntlets;

One of the most important conditions that must be observed for trouble-free operation of the chainsaw is a properly tensioned and sharpened chain. Efficient and safe use of the entire tool depends entirely on the constant monitoring of the state of its chain device.

The saw bar in this design is held by the clutch cover into which the chain brake is integrated. To install a new or previously used chain on a device, first of all, unscrew the nuts located on the chain sprocket cover. Keep in mind that this cover cannot be removed without first loosening the chain brake. This is done by pulling the brake stop in the direction of the chainsaw handle.

Holes for tensioning the chain allow you to install the tire in any position. The saw bar must be moved closer to the drive sprocket. When installing the circuit on the bus you need to be very careful. The cutting teeth of the chain on the top of the tire should be in the direction of the driven sprocket. First, the chain is mounted on the drive sprocket, and then the chain shanks are inserted into the groove of the saw bar. Only then the chain is put on the teeth of the driven sprocket. Care must be taken to ensure that the shanks of the chain enter the groove of the tire and from the bottom. This is very important for future operation.

A chain tensioner equipped with an adjusting screw is installed in the clutch cover. The tensioner element must enter the hole on the saw bar so that it is in its rearmost position. Having established a chain sprocket cover, you only need to make nuts, without tightening them completely. Using a combination key, adjust the chain tension. Then the saw bar rises up and only after that the nuts are tightened completely.

If the chain was installed correctly, the chain easily leaves the groove by 1 cm and has a free movement on the tire. The drum should turn easily when moving the chain along the saw bar. The tension should be checked at each refueling of the chainsaw. An under-tensioned chain may slip off the tire and cause significant damage. The tension must be checked manually by wearing thick gauntlets. This should be done quite often, as new chains tend to increase in length during use. During operation, the circuit heats up and sags on the underside of the tire.

A motorcycle chain is one of the necessary elements of this vehicle, without which it cannot function. To ensure the speed of driving and the safety of you and others, you need to properly tension the chain with knowledge of all the rules and techniques of tension. Most often, people turn to the service to tension the chain on a bicycle, but if you have the skill to work with equipment, you can try to tension the chain yourself, following our instructions.

To adjust the chain, be sure to load it. during adjustment, someone else should sit on the motorcycle. To check the chain tension, rotate the wheel to tighten the chain as much as possible. Then, having previously mounted the motorcycle with the person sitting on the stand, check the central deflection of the chain. the distance between the upper and lower sections of the chain should be 2-3 cm. To tighten the chain if this distance is exceeded, raise the chain from the bottom with your finger and then lower it slightly. Unscrew the nut that fixes the axis of the wheel, and in the pendulum of the axis, begin to unscrew the first nuts on the side of the nut (locking) by half a centimeter, and then tighten the power nuts clockwise. Adjust the chain tension with your finger until its free play is 20–25 mm.

Then check whether the ends of the wheel axis are equidistant from the ends of the pendulum. orient yourself on the notches pre-applied to the axis.

When the distances are equal, tighten the locknuts and tighten the wheel axle lock nut.

After that, adjust the rear brake, since when adjusting and tightening the chain, the brake rod is too tight, and ride the motorcycle back and forth to check whether the rear wheel is correctly spun.

These steps are enough to adjust the chain and make your motorcycle faster, safer and more functional.

How to properly install the chain and tire on a Stihl chainsaw

Innovative types of chainsaws give their owners the opportunity to do the work, without special efforts. The work will be carried out perfectly and as soon as possible if the chain is mounted on a chainsaw in a timely and high-quality manner.

Before proceeding with the assembly of the chainsaw, it is necessary to check the presence of all components. It is also important to observe safety precautions and be sure to wear gloves for protection. This is a prerequisite for any contact with the saw chain, since there is a risk of injury by the teeth of the chain.

Saws come with a quick chain tensioner, side tensioner and front chain tensioner.

Following the step-by-step instructions, we prepare the saw for work.

Quick chain tensioner

The chain is pulled with the adjusting wheel without the need for other tools.

  • We prepare the surface for work. It should be comfortable and smooth. In order not to spoil the surface and the tool itself, we cover it with something soft, such as a rug. Now lay out on the surface separately the tire, chain and motor block.
  • The next step is to open the wing nut, after which, remove the chain sprocket cover.
  • Turn the tensioning sprocket attached to the tire to the right until it stops.
  • Gradually lay the chain on top of the tire, starting at the top of the tire. It is important to ensure that the direction of the chain is correct. Do not forget about the protective gloves.
  • Now the chain must be turned so that the tire is on top of the chain.
  • We re-check the accuracy of the location and direction of movement of the chain. The cutter located on the top of the tire should be facing forward.
  • We put the chain in the assembly with the tire on an asterisk. In the process, the guide rail slides over the shoulder bolt.
  • Now we put back the chain sprocket cover on the engine block, it is important to make sure that all the pins go into the corresponding holes. We turn the wing nut until the chain sprocket contacts the engine housing. The sprocket cover does not need to be completely tightened.
  • Then, in the direction of the top of the tire, turn the clamping screw. The drive chain links must go into the groove of the tire.
  • We twist the wing nut so that the chain sprocket cover fits tightly on the engine block. Close the wing nut until it locks.
  • We check visually so that the chain does not sag.
  • Next, we check to see if the chain is too tight. To do this, release the chain brake, pull the chain along the line of movement with your hand (do not forget about the protective gloves).
  • After that, the saw is ready to work and only the last step remains. the activation of the chain brake.

Thus, the installation of the saw chain and tires with a quick chain tensioner has its distinct advantages, namely, that it is not difficult to tighten the chain and does not require an additional tool.

Side chain tensioner

Consider the step-by-step installation instructions for the side chain tensioner.

  • As in the case of the quick tension device, the first step is the preparation of the working surface on which we lay out the block, combination key, tire and chain.
  • We bring the engine block to a vertical position and use a combination wrench to unscrew the nuts. Now you can remove the chain sprocket cover.
  • Turn the chain tensioner to the left so that the tensioner touches the recess in the housing.
  • Next, as with mounting with a quick tensioner, carefully lay the chain on the tire. We start the process from the top of the tire. It is important to ensure that the direction of the chain is correct. A necessary condition remains the presence of gloves for protection when working with sharp chain cutters.
  • We turn the chain so that the tire is completely on the chain.
  • We re-check the accuracy of the location and direction of movement of the chain. The cutter located on the top of the tire should be facing forward.
  • We put the chain in the assembly with the tire on an asterisk. In the process, the guide rail slides over the shoulder bolt.
  • We put the cover on the engine block and tighten the nuts. Now the chain with the tire is rigidly fixed and it is possible to adjust the chain tension.
  • If the chain is loose and sagging, then its links will not be in the groove of the tire.
  • Next, turn the clamping screw of the chain to such an extent that the chain sags quite a bit, and the links are located in the groove of the tire.
  • Raise the top of the tire and slightly tighten the screw. The chain links must fully enter the groove.
  • Using a combination wrench, tighten the nuts.
  • Recheck the chain in the groove. And we check that there is no sagging.
  • Next, we check to see if the chain is too tight. To do this, release the chain brake, pull the chain along the line of movement (do not forget about the protective gloves). If the chain does not move, then you must again unscrew the nuts and repeat the above manipulations.
  • You can activate the chain brake and start the operation of the chainsaw.

Front chain tensioner

Consider the instructions for the correct installation of the chain and tire with the front chain tensioner.

  • Separate components of the chainsaw: engine block, chain, tire, combination key are laid out on a surface covered with a soft mat.
  • As in the case of the side chain tensioning device, we bring the engine block to a vertical position and unscrew the nuts with a combination wrench. Now you can remove the chain sprocket cover.
  • The chain tensioner must be turned to the left so that the clamping element moves backward from the sprocket.
  • Then we put the chain on the tire, starting from the top of the tire.
  • We turn the chain so that the tire is completely located on top of it.
  • We check that the chain is located on the bus correctly. It should be positioned so that the teeth on the top of the tire are directed forward.
  • Next, take the chain and the tire, and put the chain on the sprocket by sliding the guide bar onto the bolts with a collar.
  • The sprocket cover must be put back on the engine block and tighten the nuts by hand. Now the tire and chain are fixed and the chain tension can be adjusted.
  • When turning the clamping screw to the right, the chain links enter the tire groove.
  • Lift the apex up, turn the chain clamp screw a little more. As a result of this, the links must enter the groove.
  • Now it is necessary to tighten the nuts with a combination wrench.
  • Check the chain slack and the chain in the groove.
  • Next, we check to see if the chain is too tight. To do this, release the chain brake, pull the chain along the line of movement (do not forget about the protective gloves). If the chain does not move, then you must again unscrew the nuts and repeat the above manipulations.
  • The saw is prepared for work. It remains only to activate the chain brake.

A timely and correctly installed chain to the saw will help to make the process of cutting wood quick and safe.

Most people, when first encountering the operation of a chainsaw, are wondering how to pull the chain on the chainsaw correctly. Installation of the chain and its adjustment does not require much time.

A correctly tensioned chain of the chainsaw will ensure the longevity of its work.

In order to answer this question, you should study the device of the chainsaw. The device consists of several main units that ensure its operation.

Chainsaw device

A chainsaw consists of the following main structural elements:

  • gasoline engine;
  • guide bar for the saw chain;
  • saw chain;
  • chain tensioning mechanism;
  • device controls

The chainsaw drive is based on a single-stage chain drive.

By their design, chainsaws can be attributed to the classic mechanisms that are driven by an internal combustion engine. The design of the device uses the simplest single-cylinder two-stroke engine. Instead of a gearbox, the device uses a single-stage chain transmission, which ensures the rotation of the saw chain. The simplicity of the design provides reliability and trouble-free operation of the unit in severe operating conditions.

The engine installation of the unit includes the following structural elements:

  • working cylinder with piston group;
  • ignition module;
  • muffler;
  • air purification system;
  • carburetor.

The motor of the device is capable of developing a maximum of 13,500 rpm. Such high rates impose stringent requirements on the fuels and lubricants used in the process of its operation. The force from a running engine is transmitted to the drive sprocket using a centrifugal clutch, which is activated automatically when the engine speed rises. The clutch consists of a drum and elements with friction linings. When the engine reaches a certain number of revolutions, the elements are pressed against the drum, and the latter begins to rotate, driving the drive sprocket, in engagement with which is the saw chain.

The ignition system is a non-contact electronic device that allows for stable operation of the power plant of the device. The fuel supply system consists of a tank for storing fuel, a pipeline and a carburetor. The carburetor is a device that provides the preparation of a combustible mixture for the operation of the power unit.

The working tool of the chainsaw is a saw chain, the movement of which occurs along a special guide bar, due to the rotation of the drive and driven sprockets.

The chain alternates between cutting and driving links.

The working element of the saw consists of three types of elements:

  • cutting links;
  • leading links;
  • connecting elements.

All elements are assembled using rivets. The most complex structural elements are cutting links. This type of structural elements can be of two types: right- and left-sided. These elements provide sawing wood.

The tire is the most important structural element of the device, which serves to guide the saw chain. The tire is manufactured using wear-resistant steel, which has high elasticity. On the periphery in the tire structure there is a special guide groove. Oil is supplied through the groove to provide lubrication. A feature of the tool is the presence of an open cutting organ, which is a danger to humans. To ensure safe operation, a special device called a brake is used. The device is turned on by pressing the protective shield.

When the brake is applied, the brake tape is tightened on the clutch drum and it stops. As a result of these actions, the cutting organ stops.

The system of tension of the cutting body includes a movably connected screw. When the screw rotates, the pin moves along the groove in the saw body, which causes the tire to move. The movement of the tire leads to tension of the cutting body. For the convenience of the operation, the tension screw on some models of the unit is located on the side, outside the cover of the protective cover that covers the drive sprocket of the device’s drive. Each new chain installation requires adjustment of the blade tension.

Lack of slack is a sign of proper chain tension.

To check the degree of chain tension, it is necessary to pull the chain upward, taking it by one of the teeth in the upper part located above the guide bar. If the chain tension is normal, then one third of the tail of the tooth will be in the groove of the guide bar of the chainsaw.

An increase in this indicator indicates that the saw chain is too tight, and a decrease indicates that there is too little tension. One of the most important indicators of chain tension is its free movement along the guide rail. For this purpose, the chain needs to be rotated along the guide. it should move under light influence.

After this, using protective gloves, turn the chain in the direction of travel. If the chain is too loose, there is a lot of slack on the back of the tire. It is this symptom that indicates the need for chain tension.

The chain tension does not take much time and is not a laborious process.

After detecting a sag, it is necessary to loosen the nuts or screws, which, depending on the design of the unit, fix the guide rail. Then, using the adjusting screw, the tire is moved forward, choosing the degree of tension. In the process of tensioning, it is recommended that you rotate the saw element from time to time in order to select the optimal articulated play and to control its smooth running along the guide rail. After adjustment, you need to tighten all the locking elements and restore the unit.

After the adjustment is carried out correctly, the movement should be uniform and without snacks, a slight inertia should be maintained during the movement of the working element along the guide. If the tension is too strong, movement is difficult, and when the exposure ceases, the working tool instantly stops. The constriction is much more harmful than undershot. If a new chain is being installed, the tension should be minimal, since the constriction of the working element can lead to failure of the chainsaw guide.

Timely grinding of teeth protects the mechanism from early wear.

Tool productivity depends on a large number of factors. The main factors are as follows:

  • correct use of the unit;
  • adjustment of the tension of the cutting body;
  • high-quality and timely sharpening of the teeth of the working body.

The degree of tension of the cutting body affects the performance of the unit, and the sharpening of the teeth of the chain affects the sawing speed.

often, the degree of blunting the chain is determined by the degree of reduction in performance of the chainsaw. In the event of a drop in productivity, the cutting links require sharpening. In addition, sharpening of the cutting edges is required if the saw begins to move away. One of the signs of saw dullness is the state of the chip. When the saw dulls in sawdust, a fine and dusty fraction prevails. When carrying out regular maintenance of the unit, the chainsaw will last for a long time. At the same time, the process of sawing wood will not pose any particular difficulties, even when carrying out processing of solid wood.

In the absence of sufficient experience, it is recommended to seek help from a specialist. Professionals with sufficient experience working with chainsaws are able to determine the technical condition of the equipment during the first inspection. During the inspection, the specialist determines the deterioration of the equipment, the sharpness of the cutting elements, the tension of the chain.

Modern chainsaw models are equipped with auto-adjustment of chain tension. However, such saws require special care to prevent tool failure.
