Finding the “weak link”: identifying a failed “bank

So, the battery for the Makita screwdriver is a series of batteries connected in series. However, the standard circuit (when the positive contact of one of the capacitors is connected to the negative of the next “jar”) is used in almost all such devices. Of course, this is a stand-alone power tool. So, the algorithm of actions:

  • Using a multimeter, make a methodical measurement of all the elements of the “energy harness”.
  • In order not to get confused. do not grin, because nickel-cadmium batteries for screwdrivers (18 volts) usually consist of 15 containers connected in series. on each “jar” use a regular pencil to mark the “current” voltage.

Attention: when measuring, you should use a simple device, which consists of two wires and a load resistance of 0.5 ohms. As a result, you will receive the most plausible data on the state of the batteries involved.

  • Having connected the “load” to the measuring device, check the values given by the capacitors.
  • The element with the lowest rating needs to be replaced with a known working component of the power supply system.
  • It should be noted that a deviation of 0.5-0.7 V from the norm is considered to be critical.

Helpful hints

  • Don’t bother if your battery is a lithium-ion type. It is unlikely that you will be able to restore it.
  • A traditional nickel-cadmium battery can always be “pushed” by briefly applying a higher voltage. However, before resorting to such drastic measures, it is necessary to study in more detail this electrical issue of “reincarnation”.
  • You may not know, but the traditional type of battery, which is a nickel-cadmium battery, cannot be connected to charging if its capacities have sufficient energy potential. Otherwise, the destructive consequences of the “memory effect” of the battery simply cannot be avoided.

“Banks” that do not store money

Speaking about the restoration of the screwdriver battery, one cannot fail to mention that the batteries with which the negotiated construction tool is equipped may have different technical characteristics. Often this kind of “energy personality” of the power source plays an important role at the time of operation. For example, in low-temperature operating conditions, preference should be given to nickel-cadmium batteries. Whereas the nickel-metal hydride type of batteries is more durable in use and can have a relatively large capacity. Meanwhile, lithium-ion batteries have also become widely used. The power supply of this type does not need any maintenance at all, it is devoid of a “memory effect”, and most importantly, with a high capacity, “energy banks” batteries have more compact dimensions than those of “competitors”.

Restoration of the screwdriver battery. How to restore the battery of a screwdriver

A practical owner, like no one else, understands how convenient and effective a stand-alone hand-held power tool is to use. A professional builder, who is mainly engaged in finishing work, cannot do without a screwdriver at all. Nevertheless, the battery, and of any type, after a certain time begins to lose its energy potential. Buying a new battery is not a cheap pleasure. But who said that restoring a screwdriver battery is impossible in principle? What prevents the owner of a branded modification from saving on expensive batteries? You probably won’t be surprised at the versatility of the answer. Ignorance. Developing the topic, we note: it is possible! The article will help you solve the problem of “global aging” of the battery. One has only to read about how and what to do.

The process of replacing an inoperative battery

  • Using a sharp knife (ideally a scalpel) “cut” the contact plates “” and “-” from the malfunctioning container.
  • Using a household soldering iron and fusible solder, add a new capacitive cell to the battery’s overall “energy strap”.
  • Observe polarity when installing a new container.

Important: do not overheat the case when soldering. Use special acid and catalytic fluxes.

Forced retreat: energy features of the battery

As you already understood, the device of the screwdriver’s battery is no different in anything daunting. Nevertheless, a series circuit of connected batteries can have an additional component in the form of an installed thermistor (heat sensor), the principle of which is to open the charging circuit at the moment when the temperature indicators reach a critical level. overheating. At the same time, when repairing a battery, you should take into account the output rating of the battery used in the power tool, and also adhere to the identity of the typical layout.

How to revive dead NiCd battery from cordless power tools

In other words, sufficiently powerful screwdriver batteries (18 volts is a very common standard) are usually assembled from fifteen nickel-cadmium cells. Each individual capacity has an energy potential of 1.2 V. In the case when the device is supplied with a lithium-ion type of battery, the 18-volt battery consists of five cells with a nominal value of 3.6 V. As a result, Li-ion batteries are more compact and lighter than batteries of previous technologies.

Assembly and initial charging of the screwdriver battery

  • After you have replaced the defective elements, carefully check the soldering points.
  • When installing the battery “bundle” in a protective container, do not forget about the insulating substrates that protect the elements from the moment of short circuit.
  • Carefully glue or twist the housing connectors with the fixing screws.

It does not matter at all what kind of battery for the screwdriver (Interskol, Makita or Bosh) you restored. The main thing is how well you assembled the energy device. Since any minor mistake during installation, whether it is a housing gap, a “chewed” wire or incorrect positioning of the contact plates, can nullify all your efforts. Only after you have visually made sure that everything is assembled correctly, you need to completely discharge the “new” battery. The battery for a screwdriver (12V) will drain very quickly if you “load” it to the full. The next thing you need to do is do 2-3 deep charge / discharge cycles. It should be noted that this kind of prevention should be performed at least once every three months.

How to recover a battery from a screwdriver

A screwdriver is such a tool that is needed in every home. It is important to know that basically, the cost of this device depends, by more than 60 percent, on its battery. Therefore, when the battery breaks down, the question arises of what to do. That is, buy a new device or you can still restore the screwdriver battery. Remember that if your screwdriver had a lithium-ion battery, then it cannot be repaired, since, most likely, lithium has decomposed in it. In other batteries, you need to find out what is the reason for the malfunction, there may be several options. That is, either you need to replace the control circuit, or apply 4 volts to the element with a current, the voltage of which will be equal to 200 mA.

In order for the restoration of the screwdriver battery to be correct, you need to do everything partially, and slowly. The first thing you should do is open the battery case and remove the batteries from the case. After that, you need to unscrew the screws that were on the mount and remove all the insides of the battery. What will we see, in this case? And the fact that the cylindrical batteries are connected in series. Each cell was rated for 1.2-1.4 volts. If the charge is full, then there will be a standard charge of 1.3 A / h (1300 mAh).

The main problem for such batteries is an increase in the internal resistance of both one and several batteries. And it turns out that if the elements are not working properly, then they cannot be fully charged. In order to fix the battery, you need to find the defect and fix it. In order to find a defect, you need to fully charge the battery, then measure the voltage that is at the output of the power supply. Measurements must be made on each of the elements. If the element is in good working order, then the voltage should reach 1.4 volts, if the element is not corrected, then the voltage will reach 1.2 volts.

After that, you need to completely discharge the power supply using a light bulb. In order to discharge the battery, 10 minutes will be enough for you. Then you need to measure the voltage at the output of the block again. Resuscitation can be carried out using a shock current. You can also find a used battery that is sold on any radio market. After you have done all this, you need to either replace the element immediately by soldering. Then again check the performance of the screwdriver with the battery charge.

How to recover a battery from a screwdriver

A real way to restore 100% battery of a screwdriver, according to my method NI-CAD 1.2V

To begin with, there are a lot of videos on the Internet on recovering batteries from screwdrivers, and they are all the same as a mirror, a brief description of the recovery process that these people offer is that we take the battery, push it with a power supply or another battery, then charge and we use it, and it’s strange that someone doesn’t look, but what kind of stress will be on him when he lies down for a week or two. I offer a completely different way to restore

Which does not just charge and use until the battery dies again. And the one that you did and use as a new battery until the need arises. This method was filmed in draft about a month ago, but I never dared to put it on the site, I just didn’t want to reshoot it for a more correct explanation. And frankly speaking, I have very little free time lately.

But now the time has passed which has shown that the recovery option that many people on the network offer to use are not destined to live for more than a certain period of time. And my version, even after 2-1 months of inactivity, as if nothing had happened quietly works and charges, I still tried to shoot a new video clip, where in the brink I will try to tell everything.

In fact, everything turned out to be very simple, and in this I was helped by the NI-CAD 1.2V battery I disassembled, which showed me that even with all the zeros on the outside of the device, the patient inside is rather alive than dead and feels very good.

An attempt to regenerate the bus relative to the collector plate was done using distilled water, and the process was quite successful, as a result of which I came up with the easiest way to restore them even without disassembling the batteries!

It is enough to drill a hole in the accumulator in the place behind the rollers. and pour 20.40 ml of distilled water there. after a couple of cycles, cover the hole with lightly silicone.

Before repeating, I recommend watching the video, where I tried to describe the process in more detail.

If you are not sure or afraid of ruining a damaged battery, for example, you can do this with one battery.

If your batteries have voltage and are in the operating range, then you may have a problem with the following:

Also, if you notice that the drill began to work somehow sluggishly and at the same time works as long in time after charging, then you rather have a problem in one or more batteries that are at zero!

A very interesting effect on the battery capacity, it was equal to or slightly more than the indicated battery capacity after restoration by this method.

How to restore the battery of a Bosch screwdriver

Bosch screwdrivers are perfect for non-professional use. They are equipped with rechargeable batteries with Ni-Cd cells. They can withstand high load currents, but quickly self-discharge (in 3-4 weeks). They must be restored at least once a month so as not to fail. In addition, during operation, the elements are unbalanced and capacity is lost over time.

One of the recovery methods is to disassemble the case and “drill” each element separately. If this does not help much, some of them will have to be replaced. Then the battery will last a long time.

How to restore a screwdriver battery and its capacity? Is it possible to restore the battery of a screwdriver

The screwdriver is a necessary tool in the household, but the time comes and its source of energy. the battery stops working. Models are constantly changing and sometimes it is not possible to find the right battery. At the same time, it can be completely restored or its service life can be extended by 2-3 years. How to repair a screwdriver battery is described in this article.

Battery recovery in Aeg screwdriver

2 Li-Ion batteries are sold with the screwdriver. If one of them does not charge, this does not mean its malfunction. It is possible that it is too much discharged. To do this, you can try to “train” the battery by applying a pulse voltage to it, and then put it on charge. The easiest way is to connect to a charged battery for a few seconds.

After it was not possible to restore the battery of the Aeg screwdriver using the above method, its case should be disassembled and each jar should be checked.

Interskol screwdriver battery

The Interskol screwdriver is one of the most popular due to its versatility. In addition to the main function, it can also serve as a drill.

Lithium-ion batteries do not have this disadvantage, but they have a much higher price. During operation, when every minute counts, a little recharging is often required to maintain the required power of the screwdriver. Here, such batteries are irreplaceable, since their capacity can be quickly restored.

The buyer chooses the battery of the Interskol screwdriver on his own, depending on his preferences, capabilities and the required work. Nickel-cadmium batteries are used in most cases.

How to restore the Interskol screwdriver battery if it has not been used for a long time? During operation, one must try to ensure that there is no voltage drop to zero. For a 1.2 V can, the discharge is produced up to 0.9 V. If it is completely discharged during long-term storage, the charger may not “see” it. It is necessary to “push” the battery with another, more powerful source of current, so that a small voltage appears on it. After that, you can connect it to a standard charger.

Restoration of the battery of the Makita screwdriver

Before you restore the battery of the Makita screwdriver, you first need to disassemble its case. It consists of 2 halves connected with glue. If you gently tap the battery case with a rubber mallet, the adhesive will come off. Disassembly problems may arise in some places. Additional hand tools may be needed there. Next, separate the halves of the case, holding the terminals with a screwdriver.

In terms of performance, the Makita drill-driver approaches the power tool. Autonomous power supply is provided by 2 replaceable Li-Ion batteries. Computer charging technology allows them to be restored in just 22 minutes. At the same time, the battery life is significantly increased.

Defective cans should be replaced with similar new models. If they are difficult to find on sale, you will have to assemble one of two batteries. Factory welding can be contact, and during repairs you will have to create a solder connection.

Battery recovery of the Hitachi screwdriver

How to restore the battery of a Hitachi screwdriver? Both Ni-Cd batteries need to be charged, after which they should be disassembled and the voltage measured at each cell with a load of 1.5 ohms. Elements showing lower voltage can be discarded, and one high-quality battery can be assembled from the whole. Just 1 or 2 cans can spoil the battery experience. How to restore the battery of the “Hitachi” screwdriver, as well as all other models, depends, first of all, on the type of cells installed in them.

Battery maintenance guidelines

  • If the battery has not been used, it should be discharged to the permissible load once a month and recharged.
  • It is advisable to buy a screwdriver with two batteries included.
  • Screwdrivers should be stored and used in conditions that exclude moisture ingress.

Restoration of cans

Batteries that have not passed the test should not be thrown away in a hurry. The main reason for their failure is the evaporation of water through the sealing gum located between the body and the middle tire. When there is a complete “zero” on it, the battery is briefly charged by impulse supply of 12 V voltage through a resistance of 40-50 Ohm. In this case, it should be monitored so that the case does not overheat. If after that there is still no voltage on it, the can can be thrown away.

To restore the electrolyte, some craftsmen drill mini-holes for the syringe needle in the side recess of all the batteries in the battery. Then the jars are filled with distilled water. After that, the batteries should lie down for a day. The battery is then “trained”, charged and the voltage at each cell is checked. The holes are sealed with silicone.

General repair recommendations

To repair the battery, you will need measuring instruments. a 2 A ammeter, a 2 and 15 V voltmeter, a tester, an ohmmeter and a milliammeter. The body is manipulated with a screwdriver, scissors and pliers. A magnifying glass may be needed to detect defects.

While solving the problem, is it possible to repair the battery, a search for the faulty element is performed and its further replacement. For verification, a standard scheme is used, and on the basis of the data obtained, the state of individual parts is analyzed. It should be remembered that not only mini-batteries may be faulty, but also the terminals of the screwdriver itself. Determining the causes begins with measuring the voltage with a tester on each individual battery. All non-working elements are marked and separated from non-working ones. If the battery is rapidly discharging, do not immediately disassemble it. First, you can try to restore the battery capacity of the screwdriver. For this purpose, the battery is fully charged and deeply discharged over several cycles. In most cases, the capacity is almost completely recovered.

Often the screwdriver stops working due to the failure of the terminals. During operation, they gradually unbend, as a result, the contact is broken and the battery is not fully charged. To repair the charger, you must first disassemble it, and then carefully bend each terminal. After that, you need to check the quality of charging using measuring instruments.

If the measures taken did not help, you just need to replace the faulty part. If a specific cause of a malfunction is found, it is recommended to use the recovery methods below.

What batteries are used in screwdrivers

Correct diagnostics requires knowledge of the main types of batteries used in screwdrivers and the design features of each of them. Each battery consists of mini-batteries connected in series in a single chain. Depending on the material of manufacture, they are nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd), nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) and lithium.

The first option, Ni-Cd, is the most widely used. In these batteries, each cell has a voltage of 1.2 volts, for a total of 12 volts with a capacity of 12,000 mAh. They differ from lithium in the possibility of recovery, since they have a well-known memory effect, which is a reversible loss of capacity. Due to the design features of batteries, not all methods are suitable for their recovery. For example, lithium cells cannot be recovered using Imax B6 charging, since lithium gradually decomposes, loses its quality and does not hold 18 volts. The same method is not always suitable for Ni-Cd batteries, since in some cases the electrolyte can completely boil off in them. However, there are many options for recovery.

Different types of batteries also differ in their own operating voltage. This difference is due to the materials used to make a particular battery. This factor also affects the capacity, which ensures long-term operation of the tool without additional charging. Therefore, at the initial opening of the case, first of all, the type of elements placed inside is determined. The fact is that it is not allowed to replace lithium mini-batteries with nickel-cadmium ones, since their operating voltages differ significantly. Accordingly, the methods of repair and restoration will differ.

Structural elements of the screwdriver

The screwdriver is rightfully considered an indispensable universal tool. The modern screwdriver market is represented by a large number of models equipped with batteries. Despite the variety of brands and modifications, all batteries have the same structure and only slightly differ from each other.

Each of them includes separate elements connected in series with each other. They are all manufactured to standard sizes and have the same voltage level. Certain types of elements differ only in capacity, measured in A / h and indicated in the marking. There are 4 contacts in the tool body that perform various functions. Including, two are power, designed for charging and discharging. In addition, in the upper part there is a control contact included in the circuit together with a special temperature sensor. It protects the battery, disconnects the charging current and limits it to the set value by changing the temperature.

A fourth contact is separately located, connected together with a resistance. It is necessary when using charging stations of increased complexity, capable of equalizing the charges of all battery cells. Such stations are rarely used in everyday life due to their high cost. A conventional 12-volt screwdriver does not require such stations. One of the reasons for the failure of a screwdriver is a malfunction of the battery, that is, its separate element. In such cases, the daisy chain breaks down the entire circuit. Therefore, it is very important to pinpoint the faulty location. As a rule, this happens after the expiration of the established service life. This problem can be solved in two ways: purchasing a new battery or repairing and restoring an old battery.

Replacing old batteries

In this way, you can repair the battery of any screwdriver. The repair procedure itself is not particularly difficult and begins with disassembling the battery. Using a multimeter, faulty elements are determined, whose voltage will be below normal. Then they are carefully removed and the exact same mini-batteries are purchased instead.

New parts are installed in their places and connected with existing plates. Soldering or spot welding is used for the connection. In this case, you need to ensure that the battery does not overheat. Therefore, the work must be done carefully and quickly using flux or rosin.

How to eliminate memory effect

When a battery is very often undercharged and then discharged, it has a so-called memory effect. That is, the battery gradually, as it were, memorizes the minimum boundary of charging and discharging, as a result, its capacity is not fully used and gradually decreases more and more.

This problem is typical mainly for nickel-cadmium batteries and to a lesser extent affects nickel-metal hydride batteries. In any case, the battery capacity needs to be restored. The memory effect does not affect lithium-ion batteries at all. In order to solve the problem of whether the element can be repaired, it is recommended to completely discharge and charge the battery using a 12 volt light bulb. The positive and negative wires are soldered to it, which are connected to the battery contacts. This procedure is repeated five times or more.

How to properly top up distilled water

Distilled water only evaporates from nickel-cadmium batteries when they overheat during operation. Therefore, to eliminate the problem and restore their functions, water must be refilled. This procedure is performed in the following sequence:

  • After disassembling the battery, mini-batteries will be found inside. Their number may be different, depending on the brand of the instrument. The defective element is determined by a multimeter. In a working battery, the voltage is 1-1.3 V. If this indicator is lower, then the element is defective and needs to be repaired.
  • Next, the faulty parts are carefully removed without destroying the connecting plates. You will need them later for reassembly.
  • A hole of no more than 1 mm is drilled in the side part. It is not located in the middle, but closer to the bottom or top of the battery. You only need to drill the wall, without going deep inside the element.
  • Distilled water must be drawn into the syringe. The needle is inserted into the hole and through it the battery is completely filled with water. After that, she must stand in this position for at least a day.
  • After a day, the battery is charged with a special device, and then left in a charged state for another 7 days.
  • After a week, the capacity and voltage are checked again, and if it has not dropped, then the hole in the case is sealed or sealed with silicone.

After all the manipulations, the batteries are assembled into one piece and inserted into the battery case. The connecting plates are soldered or spot welded. Then the performance of the entire battery is checked again, after which it is completely discharged using small loads. The charging and discharging process is performed at least 3 times.

How to restore a screwdriver battery

The battery life is relatively short, on average 5 years. After a set period, the battery abruptly stops working. In such a situation, it is not always possible to quickly acquire a new power source, so the home craftsman has to solve the problem of how to restore the screwdriver’s battery, at least for a short time. In some cases, after a successful recovery, the batteries work normally for quite a long time.

  • Battery gas release

Battery gas release

This repair method applies to lithium-ion battery cells. During the period of operation, they overheat, as a result of which electrolyte evaporates from some batteries. This causes gases to build up inside the battery, causing swelling and bending of the plate. After that, you have to restore the screwdriver battery. The solution to this problem is carried out in the following order:

  • Dismantling the battery and finding a faulty battery with a multimeter. Usually, there is no voltage at all in such elements.
  • The battery is then pulled out and gas is released from it. In the first case, you will need some kind of flat tool curved at the end. It is brought under the positive contact and the swollen plate is gently pressed down. The gas finds its way on its own, making a hole and going out. In this case, you restore your working capacity only for a short time, because the electrolyte will evaporate completely through the hole and the battery will stop working again.
  • In the second case, the positive contact is disconnected using pliers, after which it is slightly bent, but not completely cut off. After that, an awl is inserted under the curved plate and gradually pushed inward. That is, the plate is disconnected from the edge of the battery and the gas flows out. After that, it is inserted into its place, and the hole is closed in the most convenient way. It remains only to solder the contact disconnected at the very beginning.

Fault definition

The most common cause of failure is the failure of only one element. They are connected in series, which means that even a drop in capacity on one battery will lead to a complete malfunction of the entire battery. In this case, we need:

  • Screwdriver. Usually, the body is connected with Phillips screws. Some models have foolproof protection and there may be vandal-resistant sprockets, triangles or even spanners.
  • Multimeter. Any model is enough, even the cheapest DT-830. Since measurements are taken in millivolts, Soviet dial voltmeters will not work.

Next, you need to follow the instructions:

  • The battery is disconnected from the screwdriver. It must be fully charged.
  • The case is disassembled.
  • Now you need to remove all the banks There are more of them in Ni-Kd, since the nominal voltage of one section is less.
  • Voltage is measured on each bank. For nickel-cadmium, 1.2 volts is nominal. For lithium. the normal voltage is in the range of 3.6-3.8 volts.
  • After measuring, you need to look at which banks the voltage is reduced. For example, if the voltage is 3.8 on two lithium batteries, and 3.5 on one, it means that it is defective.
  • The battery is assembled and installed in the instrument. Now she needs to be set to zero.
  • The battery is disassembled and the voltage is measured again. If the voltage on the alleged element is much lower than on the others, then it is being replaced or repaired.

Topping up with distilled water

Restoration of the screwdriver battery with topping up should take place with a completely discharged battery. Ni-Kd batteries are covered with paper. If there was evaporation, then there will be noticeable traces on the surface.

After measuring the voltage, you need to completely discharge all the banks using a 12 volt bulb. After that, the voltage is measured again. Those elements where it dropped to 0.7 are faulty.

To fill in distilled water, you need to make a hole in the side of the can. A groove is made with a very thin drill (0.5-0.7 mm). You need to make sure that it does not go inside and damage the plates.

A small amount of water is poured with a syringe with a fine needle. After that, the breakdown must be closed with epoxy resin or sealant.

The battery can now be rocked. Each unit must be discharged to zero again by attaching 1.5 volt bulbs to them. When the procedure is over, the battery is collected and it is necessary to carry out 5 charge and discharge cycles.

Replacing cans in the battery

How to repair a battery for a screwdriver? The easiest way to revive the battery is to replace one of the cans.

It is necessary to find a defective element with a low voltage. To do this, you need to use a tester.

Instructions on how to check the battery of a screwdriver with a multimeter:

  • A conventional multimeter has two test leads. a red and a black one. There are two contacts from opposite ends of the can (plus and minus).
  • The tester selection lever is set to the “constant voltage” mode. If the multimeter has an automatic selection of values, this is enough. If it is not there, you need to put the lever in position “20”.
  • Probes are applied to the contact pads and the voltage is measured. The real voltage is shown on the screen. If there is a “-” sign in front of the numbers, then the probes need to be changed with each other.
  • Each bank is checked using this algorithm.

When a broken element has been found, it is simply soldered off and replaced. You need to use a powerful soldering iron so as not to overheat the jar.

General repair recommendations

How to restore a screwdriver battery? You need to have a basic understanding of electrical engineering. The battery circuit is idle. Ordinary serial circuit (plus connects to minus).

When repairing Ni-Kd, the following recommendations should be taken into account:

  • They have a memory effect. The classic scheme for commissioning such batteries is 3 full charges and 3 discharges to zero. The new element must go through the same buildup.
  • A similar item. So that it does not get knocked out of the chain and does not break the battery at all, the new element must fully correspond to the previous rating.

The lithium battery of a screwdriver can be repaired at home if you consider the following:

How to repair a screwdriver battery at home

The cordless screwdriver is a convenient mechanism that allows you to quickly deal with repairs. Instead of a heavy drill on a wire, it is better to take a lightweight screwdriver that can handle the same tasks without being tied to one place.

They have one problem. batteries fail. There are many reasons for this:

  • Long downtime. Modern lithium-ion batteries require periodic charging and discharging. They drastically lose capacity if they are idle for a long time.
  • Temperature drops. Li-Ion does not tolerate high temperatures well. Therefore, there are recommendations for storing these batteries in the refrigerator. But they cannot work in such conditions.
  • Overdischarge. The protection system can cause the batteries to discharge to zero and a large current must be applied to the input to resurrect them.

Repair and replacement of battery cells

Do-it-yourself screwdriver battery repair can be more extensive. For example, conversion of Ni-Kd to lithium ones. To do this, you need to purchase several Li-Ion batteries and a charging board. The number of batteries must correspond to the original voltage rating.

As practice shows, most screwdrivers are easily converted from one type of battery to another, without any problems. Thanks to the increased endurance, resistance to constant use and higher capacity, the old screwdriver will last much longer.

How to properly top up distilled water

The sequence of actions when filling the battery with water:

  • Separate defective elements from the common battery bank, the jumpers are saved for later assembly.
  • Drill the side surface of the casing at the bend in the wall. Drilling is performed to the thickness of the body material; it is prohibited to deepen the drill into the electrolyte.
  • Inject 1 ml of distilled water into the cavity of the element (using a medical syringe with a shortened needle).
  • Withstand the battery at room temperature for 24 hours, then a control voltage measurement is made.
  • Charge the battery with a device designed for nickel-cadmium power sources.
  • Withstand the battery for 5-7 days, and then check the voltage value. If the indicators have decreased, then an additional dose of water is poured and recharged. If the parameters have not dropped, then the case is sealed (with solder or silicone material).
  • Connect the batteries into a common jar using contact welding or soldering. Conduct training cycles of discharging and charging the recoverable battery, allowing to increase the capacity.

The method is suitable only for products of the nickel-cadmium type, the rest of the batteries are not filled with water.

Isolate high voltage

Almost done! All you have to do is insulate all high voltage parts of the device.

You can install the board in a beautiful box, or you can simply glue all the metal parts and tracks of the board with adhesive tape.

Battery does not charge

The screwdriver, after prolonged use, sometimes fails. Its working element may stop charging, which will lead to the impossibility of fulfilling the functional capabilities of the instrument, the instrument, roughly speaking, will “die”.

In order to extend the life of the instrument, so that you do not have to remove it from the field of view, you can try three methods in turn. Each subsequent one is considered more complicated and costly. They consist in:

  • restoration and increase of capacity after its reversible loss (memory effect);
  • adding distilled water to the electrolyte;
  • replacing some or all of the battery packs.

What additional methods of battery recovery for screwdrivers exist?

It should be noted right away that not all batteries are subject to the ability to restore performance. In particular, with the best success, it is possible to reanimate “banks” with the typical insignia ni cd. Most typical screwdriver models are now equipped with these batteries. Of course, on the tool market you can find Makita or hitachi or bosch screwdrivers, the battery of which is built on a lithium base, but there are not so many of these models yet.

In general, if we talk about the health of the battery pack and methods for its recovery, in any case, you need to pay attention not only to the batteries themselves inside the case, but also to make sure that the charger is working properly. It is likely that the functionality of the power supply has lost the ability to provide the required current when charging.

Many craftsmen, when faced in practice with the repair of nickel-cadmium power cells, restore them by adding an electrolyte. The battery begins to lose electrolyte during operation as it evaporates.

The physical impact on the battery “bank” with a drill helps to correct the situation. It is necessary to make a small hole in the body of the battery (diameter 0.8-1mm). Armed with a medical syringe with a needle, a couple of drops of distilled water should be injected into the battery. The hole is then securely sealed with epoxy. This cycle of events will allow to extend the operation of the supply element for several more charge / discharge operations.

Of course, the simplest and most obvious way to reanimate the battery pack for a screwdriver is to physically replace the faulty unit with a workable one. Here, even the help of a specialist may turn out to be inappropriate, since the operation can be easily performed even by the person who at least once used a soldering iron and held a screwdriver in his hands. The main thing here is to show a little dexterity in order to prevent overheating of the cans at the time of their soldering / desoldering.

Of course, there are quite a few ways to reanimate rechargeable batteries, but not all of them are available to the common user. If you cannot extend the life of your screwdriver with a standard battery on your own, then seek help from qualified specialists. They will make error-free diagnostics and “figure out” how to restore the tool battery with minimal labor costs.

Method for determining the malfunction of the screwdriver battery

If you disassemble the battery case of the screwdriver, then inside you can find the series-connected power supply elements. In most situations, the operating voltage of the electric motor is 18 volts, which are made up of 15 cans of batteries in the battery case. As a rule, no external signs of breakage are found. Therefore, the master is faced with the task of correctly determining the link in the existing chain, which has lost its energy intensity.

The performance of the entire battery will lose its effectiveness even if there is at least one element in the system that has lost its capacity. However, all the feeding elements cannot fail. Therefore, having correctly identified the ineffective cells, they can either be replaced or return the working capacity of the used batteries. In other words, there are methods to revive the batteries.

As a rule, in order to accurately determine the malfunction of the battery, two main methods have found practical application:

  • Identification of faulty units when using a tester (multimeter);
  • Identification of faulty power supply elements in the system using the load

Let’s see how these methods work in practice.

Breaking the camera

This step is a rather dangerous part of the project. Be very careful not to get an electric shock from a charged capacitor.

(The capacitor in the camera is a large black cylinder; it is used to fire the flash).

Open the camera body with a screwdriver. Be careful not to get an electric shock.

After the case is disassembled, discharge the capacitor by simultaneously touching its two contacts with a screwdriver with an insulated handle. You will see (and hear) a powerful spark, and the capacitor will discharge (from such a discharge, a mark may remain on the screwdriver, so use a tool that you do not mind).

Dangerous step passed (some people think this is the funniest part of the project, as they see a powerful loud spark when the capacitor is discharged).

Types of batteries used in screwdrivers and their differences

The cordless tool uses a nickel-based or lithium-based power source. The bank is equipped with a waterproof case made of shock-resistant plastic, inside there are batteries connected in a common circuit.

On the lid of the can there is a guide ledge with contact pads for charging and connecting the battery to the tool. The design includes plastic clips that prevent spontaneous battery separation during operation.
