How to repair starter on trimmer

Repairing the gas trimmer starter may need to be done suddenly. Here, the problem can be solved by 2 methods: change the broken part or change the entire assembly. The latter option will cost more. To repair the device on your own, almost always only a screwdriver with a suitable tip is useful from tools. Repair work does not take too much time and does not even require special knowledge. It is enough to know the device, the mechanism of work, the aspects of the assembly-disassembly of the starter on the trimmer in order to achieve a suitable good result.

The device and principle of operation of the starter on the trimmer

Internal combustion engine. this is, by and large, the main part of the scythe. Its power lies in the range of 0.5-2.5 hp. The movement from it is transmitted to the shaft located inside the hollow rod, and then through the gearbox, consisting of gears, already a fishing line or a knife (working body).

Also, the brushcutters have the following elements:

  • protective cover;
  • a pen;
  • belt designed for ease of use by the device;
  • starter, serving to start a gasoline petrol engine.

What remains to be done to our client are details of Lawn Mower presented on the photo further.

The starter on the trimmer is an integral part that starts the engine into operation. It is depicted separately in the 2 photos below.

Starter mechanisms of different models of brushcutters work on a similar principle: at the time of starting the ICE, the protrusions marked with the number 1 in the photo above enter the hook with the dogs 3. When the engine starts to work, they return to their previous position due to the action of centrifugal force. A similar role is also played by procrastination 3.2.

The process of returning to the initial position of the parts of the mechanism occurs due to the presence of a spring, fancy around the axis. It unfolds when the rope is pulled. After releasing the cord, it is retracted and wound due to the folding of the spring. At the time of starting the ICE, the trigger mechanism rotates its shaft without performing a quality installation until it starts to work (it starts up).

Today, gasoline scooters equip starter mechanisms of 2 types:

The first option is even more common.

Starter on the trimmer can work without breakdowns for a long time. It is impossible to indicate exactly the period of uptime. What remains to be done to our client is determined by the initial quality of the device and compliance with the appeal rules with him.

The main malfunctions of the trimmer starter

It is not difficult to find the cause of the breakdown of the starting device. There are several main options:

  • breakage of a cord (rope);
  • when the spring breaks or disengages.

The indicated parts are shown in the photo below.

It happens that the starter mechanism will be broken case. The consequences will be deplorable if a tattered rope is wound around the flywheel of an operating ICE: then the spring will burst, the pulley will rip off. But such cases when a complete substitution is required starter assembly, occur infrequently. In most cases, to fix the mechanism, it is enough to put a new spring or replace the cord.

Removing and disassembling the starter, replacing broken parts

To repair the trimmer starter, it is useful to disassemble it first, and then assemble it. This process is not particularly difficult. Useful for work suitable screwdriver.

It remains to be done carefully for our client, observing safety precautions, mainly so that the spring in case of an accidental departure does not injure the master.

Parsing starter assembly

The start-up mechanism is dismantled with the aim of installing new parts instead of broken ones in this order:

  • unscrew the screw fixing the pulley with a starter cover with a screwdriver;
  • take out the spring and antennae;
  • carefully remove the pulley (it is necessary to turn your head away or work, wearing glasses and gloves earlier);
  • determine why the start mechanism has broken;
  • if the spring is completely destroyed, then it is replaced;
  • according to the readiness of the spring from the hook, it is installed in its original place by bending the antennae before it (the photo shows the installation process);
  • if the spring plate is installed inside the groove, carefully twist it.

To change the spring, work should be carefully and accurately: it can accidentally burst under the influence of the force caused by putting it in place. If you carefully remove the roller, the spring band flies off the reel in a short time and can injure your hand with its sharpened edges.

Immediately put in its original place spring plate rarely comes out. It often slips, so the samples must be repeated until the desired result is achieved.

Starter assembly

Assembly starter assembly carried out in a number of steps:

  • the coil is turned over, installing it so that the spring bend exactly fits into the groove of the case, as in the photo below;
  • stack two washers, between which a spring is placed;
  • put a cup with antennae on the destination;
  • tighten the screw (photo on).

When doing the above manipulations, you need to put two washers. If this is not done, then the spring will damage the plastic cup over time, and when it is pulled, wedging will begin. For this reason, there is a feeling that the spring has flown. To remove such a defect, it is necessary to install this part of greater length or an additional washer.

When such parts are missing, there is an option just a little unscrew the screw, and the starter assembly will start to work without wedging. Alas, this option is temporary. it is better to repair it perfectly quicker.

Spring tension

After installing the spring, tighten it. For this purpose, do the following:

  • remove the handle from the starter cord;
  • then the rope is inserted into the reel groove;
  • create a spring tension by rotating the coil in the opposite direction clockwise (winding);
  • make the required number of revolutions, indicated in the annotation for use to the applicable trimmer model and corresponding to the length of the cord used;
  • at the very end, the rope is threaded into the hole created for this, located in the starter cover;
  • put the handle in place, fixing it with a knot.

If after repair the spring continues to fly, then get rid for this reason there is an option using the following methods:

  • cram a suitable piece of the plate into the groove at the location of the spring hook;
  • drill holes on both sides of the groove in the coil, on which to stick the spring hook and fix it using wire.

Replacing a torn cord

A torn rope is replaced in the following sequence:

  • remove the old cord;
  • choose a rope of suitable size (thickness and length);
  • threading it through a special hole located in the coil, tie a knot;
  • cock the spring, producing the required number of revolutions;
  • fasten the handle.

It is better to tighten the spring plate together with the partner, so that the edge of the cord does not wound inside the starter mechanism.

To collect starter on the trimmer and winding the spring is not difficult, only do this carefully and with caution. For different models of petrol brush, the breakdowns of starting devices are similar, because they are repaired in a similar way. In this case, there are certain aspects related to their design features.

Do-it-yourself starter repair for a gas drill, a gas trimmer, and a trimmer

Today we will consider the most common case when the breakdown is not so serious and show how to repair the starter with your own hands, if the cord breaks without any destructive consequences or is not wound up due to the fact that the spring inside has simply fallen off and is out of gear. At least, initially I want to believe in it. But in order to find out whether it is or not, you will need to disassemble the starter.

How to repair a gasoline engine starter with your own hands?

In the case of a break in the starter cord, everything is clear: we take out the old rope, take a suitable length and thickness (linen possible), thread it through the hole in the coil, tie a knot. Next, we cock the spring to the speed we need, only then we fix the handle. and voila! details on how all this is done are shown below.

Installation or replacement of a starter spring of a Lawn Mower, a motor-drill, a trimmer

But what if we have everything in order with the rope, and the starter coil (pulley) does not reel? Consider this issue step by step on the example of the ADA GroundDrill gasoline motor drill starter, which has a pulley with two metal antennae for 2 hooks.

In the case of other types of manual starters of a similar design, which are widely used in gasoline trimmers, trimmers and motor drills, the entire process of repairing the starter will look similar, differing only in some nuances.

Starter Repair: Disassembly

Unscrew the screw that secures the pulley to the starter cover. We take out the antennae, spring. The pulley itself is pulled out carefully so that the spring does not bounce into the face. Even with the most accurate disassembly, it usually flies out of the coil immediately and spins abruptly into a long metal strip or twists into rings.

Carefully pull out the white starter coil. do not get hurt by the spring!

If the spring bursts or one of its hooks and hooks breaks, then it is not possible to repair the starter simply and quickly. replacement of the spring is required. In order not to spend money on the purchase of a new starter, you can only search for it on sale.

In case the starter spring just broke, that is, one of the hooks is out of engagement, it is enough to insert it, if necessary, slightly tightening the hooks more tightly (just do not break it!) Install the spring with an external hook in the groove of the pulley and start twisting it while holding it fingers inside the coil and not letting it pop out.

Fill the starter spring. Pressing the spring to the pulley, wrap the spring inward in circular motions.

The first time insert starter spring It may not seem so simple, but everything comes with experience. With a little training, you can easily wind the spring into the pulley in a maximum of a minute.

Winding the starter spring is done. It remains only to assemble the starter and cock the spring to the desired value

How to assemble a starter?

The most important thing in the process of self-repair of the starter is to assemble it correctly.

After the spring is fully wound, you need to carefully turn the coil and insert it into the starter housing so that the second spring hook enters the groove of the housing.

When installing the pulley (black in this photo), we look through the hole in it so that the spring hook falls into the groove on the starter cover

Then, if there is a spring under the screw, we first install it, without forgetting to put washers on the bottom and top of the spring.

Carefully insert the cup with the antennae into the grooves of the coil and tighten the screw.

Then watch that the washer located on a spring did not drop out. Why is it important? The fact is that the spring scratches the plastic cup with its end, as a result of which the latter wears out and begins to more tightly press the screw against the coil. For this reason, a situation may arise that is very similar to a spring break: the handle is pulled out of the starter but not returned. However, when loosening the starter screw, this problem disappears. To fix such a malfunction of the starter is simple: just pick up a spring of the same diameter, but a little longer, or put an additional washer. If we just tighten the screw slightly, it will twist and fly out, and this will increase the likelihood of spring breakage, since the pulley will not fit snugly against the starter housing.

They screwed the coil to the body, now we need to tighten the spring. Before this, it is necessary to remove the starter handle from the rope in advance. If the knot is too strong, then you can simply cut it off or try to untie it, for example, using a pair of pliers. This is done so that after you cock the spring, you can thread the rope into the hole in the starter cover. The second end of the rope must be fixed in the coil before it is installed in the body, it is not necessary to wind the rope onto the pulley before pulling the spring. do it after.

Before you cock the spring, estimate how many revolutions of the coil the rope should be wound. Suppose the length of the rope at the starter of the Ada GroundDrill-5 motor-drill is 5.5 turns around the coil. In this case, make at least 6 revolutions of the coil in the direction opposite to the direction of winding.

So let’s get started. Without reeling, insert the rope into the groove in the reel specially designed for it. Everything is ready, proceed to pulling the spring. To do this, rotate the coil counterclockwise. in the opposite direction to the direction of rotation of the coil when winding the rope. It is more convenient to do this not on the knee, but by pressing the starter with one hand to the floor, and with the other turning the coil directly behind the rope attached to it. If the experience is not enough, then the pulley itself can be rotated directly with two hands, but the rope will interfere with this, which can create additional inconvenience. After the necessary number of revolutions is done, we pass the end of the rope through the hole in the starter cover, put on the handle, fix it with a knot. It is more convenient to do this together with a partner, so that accidentally the end of the cable does not wound inside the starter.

By the way, on our own you can make some refinement in the design of the starter in order to more securely fix the end of the spring inside the coil. Then anyone has enough imagination. Now I will explain why this is necessary. It often happens that the spring in starters of this type after the first such independent repair and installation of the starter on the unit flies again after a few jerks. the hook does not hold in the recess of the coil. And this is despite the fact that the coil is almost tightly attached to the starter cover and the spring there should not be free to hang up and down, and even more so until the spring comes out of engagement. It turns out that when the cable is pulled, the spring pulls out, pulls out of the groove. In this case, you can do the following: cut a narrow strip of metal, which in thickness could be squeezed into the groove of the coil along with the spring hook itself. So the hook will not freely hang in the groove, which means it will not be so easy to break out.

A metal plate tightly inserted into the gap between the spring hook and the groove walls will hold the spring securely

Another way to solve the problem is to drill small holes in the coil on both sides of the groove and, having inserted the spring hook, fix it with a thin wire threaded through these holes. But here you need to manage to make sure that this wire does not touch during rotation of the starter cover from the inside and thus does not slow down the pulley. Alternatively, tighten the screw loosely or replace it with a similar slightly larger length. You can consider the option of installing some kind of gasket between the cover and the coil.

Is the design of the starter for your gas tool different from the above? Faced with another malfunction or do you know the best way to repair a starter with your own hands? Ask questions, share your experience with others. together we can solve the problem of frequent starter breakdowns once and for all!
