How to set up a carburetor on a Stihl 180 chainsaw

Nozzle

The nozzle, and it is also often called jets, is designed to mix fuel and incoming air, thereby forming a fuel-air mixture, which is supplied under pressure to the combustion chamber. It is built into the carburetor body and has a check valve that prevents air back pressure. Air, simultaneously with gasoline under pressure, is supplied to the nozzle, mixed and sprayed in precisely metered portions.

The device and principle of operation carburetor Stihl 180

Before you start adjusting the carburetor on a chainsaw, study its device. The carburetor performs the function of mixing the fuel mixture (gasoline) with air in precisely metered proportions and supplying the resulting mixture to the engine. It is important to comply with this requirement when adjusting the carburetor. Failure to comply with it can lead to stopping the operation of the chainsaw, overspending of the gasoline mixture, engine failure.

The main components of the carburetor are:

  • Fuel pump
  • Distribution chamber
  • Nozzle
  • Diffuser
  • Needle valve
  • Throttle valve
  • Air damper
  • Idling speed adjusting screw

Let’s take a closer look at each element

Distribution chamber

The distribution chamber is responsible for the supply of gasoline. It has a special membrane. The diaphragm, like the diaphragm, is responsible for the accuracy of dosing of the incoming gasoline. The membrane opens at the right time, presses on the rocker, which is connected to the needle valve. A gasket is installed between the chamber cover and the carburetor body, which is responsible for the tightness of the connection. The cover itself is attached to the body with 4 bolts.

Stihl 180 chainsaw carburetor adjustment

The manufacturer limits the range of adjustments to the chainsaw. Without disassembling the carburetor, you can only adjust the idle speed using a special screw mounted on the throttle valve. You will not be able to adjust the fuel supply or air intake. The manufacturer does not technically fit these adjusting screws. For more information on adjusting idle speed, see the instruction manual for the chainsaw. This instruction can either be downloaded from the manufacturer’s website for a specific model of the chainsaw, or viewed in the paper version supplied with it.

With some experience, it is possible to adjust the volume of the mixture entering the fuel chamber. But for this you have to disassemble the carburetor. This adjustment is done by increasing or decreasing the clearance between the needle valve and the rocker arm. By increasing or decreasing the gap, we adjust the pressure with which the rocker arm presses on the needle valve.

If it is necessary to increase the flow of the fuel mixture, it is necessary to bend the rocker arm. Thus, we will reduce the pressure on the needle valve, and accordingly increase the flow area, which is regulated using a diaphragm. If it is necessary to reduce the volume of the supplied mixture, the rocker arm should be bent. The pressure created on the needle valve will increase, making it more difficult for the diaphragm to open. The flow area will decrease. Accordingly, the volume of the supplied fuel mixture will decrease.

It should be noted that an untrained specialist should not perform this procedure on his own. Some knowledge is required to make this adjustment. Otherwise, the rocker arm can be easily broken or bent. It will not be possible to restore the factory settings. As a result, we will get an unworkable tool. If you decide to make such an adjustment yourself, remember that these actions must be performed with great care, gradually, smoothly bending or bending the rocker arm in order to avoid its breakage.

By adjusting the idle speed with the adjusting bolt on the throttle valve when the chainsaw is running, it is necessary to turn it smoothly, avoiding sharp turns. You need to be guided by ear. The chainsaw at idle with a correctly set damper works smoothly, does not increase speed and does not stall. Worst of all, if it stalls at idle. There are situations when the chainsaw starts to stall at the set speed under load. In this case, it is necessary to loosen the screw in order to increase the flow of fuel into the combustion chamber. RPM will increase slightly, the instrument will start to work a little louder. But at the same time, he will cease to deaf. If the speed is too high, the chainsaw is noisy, roars, it is necessary to tighten the adjusting screw, lower the speed.

Throttle valve

The throttle valve is a mechanical valve that regulates the amount of fuel mixture supplied to the combustion chamber. Structurally, the throttle valve is made in the form of a valve, a spring and an adjusting screw. It is installed directly in the carburetor body on a shaft that runs through the entire carburetor body. The throttle cable is connected to the shaft, connected to the throttle button.

When the gas is pressed, the damper opens, increasing the flow area, thereby increasing the throughput of the channel and the volume of fuel supplied to the combustion chamber. The opening angle of the damper depends on the degree of pressing the gas. The harder you press, the more angle it opens. The power transmitted to the chainsaw chain depends on the volume of the burnt fuel mixture. With the help of the adjusting bolt, we can control the degree of opening of the damper, increasing or decreasing idle speed, opening it or closing it.

Fuel pump

The fuel pump is a device responsible for pumping gasoline from the tank to the carburetor. It is located directly in the carburetor housing. Fuel is supplied in certain portions. The diaphragm is responsible for the exact volume of air supplied. At the necessary moment, under the influence of air impulses from the crankcase of the chainsaw, it opens, letting air through itself. To prevent air leaks from outside, a special gasket is located between the diaphragm and the body, which ensures the tightness of the connection.

Stihl 180 chainsaw repair

To begin with, this is one of the best Stihl chainsaws, but it has “inherent” disadvantages. Here is our Stihl chainsaw repair manual:

Leakage of chain oil.

This is the problem that you will sooner or later face. The reason for this problem is that over time, the tightness is broken at the junction of the hose from the oil tank and the oil pump. The difficulty in eliminating this problem for the Stihl 180 chainsaw is that you will have to disassemble almost the entire chainsaw.

Chainsaw Stihl 180 once stopped starting.

What you need to do immediately after buying a chainsaw.

Decision:
Read the instructions for use carefully.
Install and adjust the saw headset.
Carry out a trial run.
Run in the saw for 40-50 minutes at low speed.
Stop the motor to check the chain tension.
Make several cuts with little effort.
After that, the tool can be used in the mode required for your purposes.

Each new bar or chain must be run-in. This is done in order to warm up the saw headset and completely oil all the necessary parts. This will insure your tool against premature failure.

Chainsaw carburetor adjustment.

ensures efficient operation of the tool at full power with economical fuel consumption. Adjustments must be made with a clean fuel and air filter. For a larger number of carburetors, the adjustment is carried out with three screws: for maximum and minimum revolutions and idle speed adjustment.

The H and L screws adjust the ratio of the mixture of gasoline and air, which is determined by opening the throttle valve of the carburetor. When the screws are unscrewed, the mixture is enriched, and the revolutions fall accordingly, when the screws are tightened, the mixture becomes leaner. the revolutions grow.

The designation H refers to the maximum speed screw that controls the main jet, L. to the minimum speed screw that controls the idle jet. The S screw is used to fine-tune the idle speed. Sometimes, to simplify tuning, the number of available carburetor adjusting screws is reduced.

Chainsaw carburetor tuning is divided into two stages. basic (factory settings), carried out with the engine off. and the final, produced on a running warm engine. The exact value of the angles of rotation should be taken from the operating instructions for the particular chainsaw. Failure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions may result in engine damage.

Basic carburetor adjustment.

The adjusting screws for maximum H and minimum L turns are slowly turned clockwise until they stop, then turned back 2 turns, other settings are also possible

Checking and adjusting idle speed.

We find the highest idle speed, for this we slowly turn the screw L in different directions. After finding the position of the highest engine speed, turn the screw L 1/4 turn counterclockwise. If the chain rotates at idle speed, screw T or (S) should be turned clockwise until it stops.

Checking and adjusting the maximum speed.

The maximum number of revolutions is changed by screw H. When screwing it in (clockwise rotation), the revolutions increase when it is turned out. decrease. Chainsaw engines have the highest rotation speed of 11500 rpm. up to 15,000 rpm. A higher speed does not provide ignition, moreover, it becomes dangerous for the engine. The rpm limit can be determined from the ignition interruptions. If they come, turn the screw H slightly counterclockwise.

If the engine is not checked for acceleration and maximum speed, then the adjustment of the chainsaw cannot be considered complete.

Acceleration check.

When the throttle trigger is smoothly pressed, the engine should confidently and quickly gain speed from idle to maximum (from 2800 rev. To 11500-15000 rev. Depending on the unit). If revolutions are gained slowly, with a lag, screw L must be slowly unscrewed counterclockwise, but no more than 1/8 of a turn.

After adjusting the acceleration and maximum speed, the saw should be checked again at idle speed. the engine must run steadily and the chain must not move. Chainsaw tuning should be repeated if this condition is not met but with the exception of the basic adjustment step.

STIHL MS-180

What then do you ask, and we will answer you:

The first step is to open and then close the gas tank cap.
Unscrew and dry the candle.
Ventilate the combustion chamber

Usually the Stihl 180 chainsaw will start after completing these three points. After that, if the saw does not start, then you need to check the air filter, the gas supply, the working ability of the spark plug.

The reason for this problem is that the slapun (the valve through which the pressure in the gas tank is equalized when fuel is running out) is clogged. When it is clogged, a vacuum appears in the gas tank, which greatly affects the fuel supply. If the breather in your chainsaw is clogged, it can be carefully cleaned with a needle.

How to remove a carburetor from a chainsaw

Before adjusting, you need to remove it from the Stihl chainsaw. For this you need:

  • Rotate the latch to the left to remove the cover.
  • Remove the filter by unscrewing the two nuts that hold it. For ease of operation, it is recommended to use special screwdrivers with suitable bits.
  • Remove all rods, including the carburetor lever.
  • Remove the carburetor and then disconnect the fuel hose.

It is recommended to remember the location of the parts so that you can then put the carburetor in place and at the same time there are no unnecessary fasteners or distortions and cracks.

Chainsaws stihl ms 180 are designed in such a way as to greatly facilitate their operation by inexperienced users. For this purpose, the saw carburetor has eliminated some of the options available on the more massive Stihl models. However, the ability to customize is still considered repair, in addition, adjusting the carburetor of the Stihl 180 chainsaw in artisanal conditions is likely.

First, it is worthwhile to determine why, in general, it may be useful to adjust and repair the stihl ms 180 carburetor. What you need, you need to do this in the following cases:

  • if the chainsaw does not keep idling;
  • repairs will be required if the saw does not start;
  • there is a loss of power;
  • overestimated fuel consumption;
  • the chainsaw does not develop the highest speed.
  • stalls when accelerating.

Of course, this list will continue for a long time, but we have determined the main prerequisites. Before proceeding with the adjustment, you should know what are the main parts of the carburetor on the Stihl 180 chainsaw, and who makes it.

What you need, the stihl ms 180 carburetor is designed and manufactured by a subsidiary of Stihl called Zama. Unique carburetors, on their own body have a company logo, which guarantees product quality.

Specifically, a fuel pump is installed in the carburetor body, which operates under the action of an air pulse from the crankcase of the chainsaw, which is transmitted through special channels. A diaphragm is installed in the pump; specifically, it is responsible for pumping fuel under the action of an impulse. A gasket is installed between the diaphragm and the body, which is responsible for the density of the fuel pump.

In the distribution chamber, as in the fuel pump, there is also a membrane that opens and regulates the fuel supply when a special rocker is pressed, which raises its own needle valve here.

The cover of the chamber is the compensator body, which is attached to the carburetor with 4 screws, a gasket is installed between the body and the lid, which increases the height of the chamber and is responsible for sealing.

The nozzle for supplying fuel is built into the carburetor body in such a way that it is a connecting link between the distribution chamber and the cavity when the throttle valve is installed. Immediately with fuel, air is supplied to the nozzle and an air mixture appears. The nozzle has a revolving valve that blocks the flow of air in the recirculation sequence, in other words, from the throttle chamber to the dispersion chamber.

The throttle valve is installed in the carburetor body and is responsible for increasing the supply of fuel consistency specifically to the engine cylinder. At the moment of pressing the gas, the throttle valve opens slightly, thereby increasing the throughput of the channel and the fuel from the carburetor cavity, rushing into the cylinder in a larger volume.

The saw has lost power, increased fuel consumption

Two very subjective indicators. In order to reliably state this or that, instrumental measurements are needed. From the practice of repair organizations, quite subjective things are often given out under one or the other. In some cases, blunt circuit effects can be mistaken for power loss. Naturally, performance in this case will be low. The saw sometimes seems to be quieter (blockages in cooling system, exhaust system). Increased fuel consumption may be due to fuel leaks.

How to start Stihl Ms 180 Chainsaw

Often the problem is in the muffler, not the carburetor.!

Removing the carburetor

The removal process is best shown in the video attached below. It also demonstrates the basic minimum steps in order to bring the node into working order. Schematically, this process looks like this: remove the cover, rods, unscrew the unit.

Saw won’t start

A special case of the previous problem. The solution required is the same.

Fuel supply system repair

The characteristic signs indicating a breakdown of the supply system are that the fuel ceases to flow into the cylinder. With such a problem, the first step is to check the hose and the condition of the diaphragm. If everything is in order with these nodes, then the reasons are a clogged filter or breather.

If there is a suspicion of a clogged filter, the hose is pulled out and the outflowing fuel jet is visually inspected. If the jet is continuous and under pressure, then everything points to a filter malfunction. You can try to clean it, but it is more expedient to replace it. especially the manufacturer, with an average load on the device, recommends replacing it every four months. It is the poor jet of fuel that indicates a clogged breather. The breather is cleaned with a sharp needle.

In addition, a clogged air filter is also the culprit. The amount of air that mixes with the fuel is often insufficient, so the fuel mixture becomes too rich and the engine malfunctions. Elimination of the malfunction occurs by removing the filter and rinsing it in water.

In case of failures in the fuel supply, you should also pay attention to the carburetor channels and the integrity of the membrane.

How to setup

Stihl 180 chainsaw carburetor adjustment is carried out in order to improve performance and fuel economy.

To adjust with your own hands you need:

  • Clean the fuel system, including the tank, from residues of a mixture of gasoline and oil. Purge air duct and filters.
  • The carburetor of the chainsaw is adjusted using bolts H, L and S. Bolt H controls the jet, provides maximum speed. The L bolt performs the same function, but provides minimum RPM. The S screw is responsible for the accuracy of the idle speed. Perform this procedure with the engine off.
  • You need to adjust the carburetor on the chainsaw by setting the corresponding angles of rotation of the first two bolts. Baseline values can be set as follows. Turn the first two bolts slowly in the clockwise direction, after the stop, go back two turns.
  • Turn on the engine and adjust the ignition on the Stihl chainsaw and its carburetor finally. To do this, you need to find the highest idle speed by turning the bolt L in different directions. After this maximum is found, the bolt must be returned a quarter of a stroke. In the event that the chain starts to move, the engine must be stopped.
  • Carry out a technical check. In particular, it is necessary to determine the maximum number of revolutions, check the acceleration and stability of the engine at idle, as well as the compliance of these parameters with the basic values in the instructions. The quality of the mixture for testing should be the highest.
