How to find out what you need to sharpen a chainsaw chain?

The time between sharpening is determined by the frequency of use of the chainsaw. We already wrote about how to choose a chainsaw for a summer residence. Someone uses it every day, someone a couple of times a year.

There are several signs by which you can determine that the chain has become dull:

  • The speed of the tool has decreased.
  • Sawdust has become jagged, sharp.
  • The chain stretches, sags, requires some effort when working.

You can sharpen a chain of a chainsaw with your own hands in various ways: with a file, an angle grinder, a machine tool.

File sharpening with a file

The cheapest and most affordable way to sharpen. use the file. To properly sharpen a chain of a chainsaw with a file, you should determine its size:

1. For processing chains in 1.3mm. You can use a round four-millimeter file.

2. With a chain size of 1.6mm. a file with a diameter of 5.2 mm is needed.

3. To remove "limiters" need a flat file.

On how to properly sharpen a chain of a chainsaw or saw, see the video:

With independent sharpening, you need to monitor the angle of sharpening. The maximum angle is determined by the manufacturer and marked on each tooth. This mark will serve as a guide.

Sharpening occurs as follows:

1. The tire is mounted on a clamp.

2. The tool is set according to the template.

3. Sharpening teeth running in the same direction. The file only moves in one direction, "push", with a certain push. If you take off "limiter", the file can be moved in any direction. With different tooth lengths, the shortest reference point will be, the rest will grind to its level. The file must be constantly rotated so that it does not grind off.

4. The tire position changes and the sharpening of teeth going in the opposite direction is performed.

To facilitate the sharpening process and minimize errors, you can use the pattern. It is fixed on the tool bar. Next, you need to select the optimal sharpening angle and fix it with a pattern. After this, it remains to move the file in the pattern groove.

Sharpening with a machine

File sharpening is not always possible. For example, if the cutting edge is damaged, the best option is to use a sharpening machine. Before sharpening on a manual machine, you need to loosen the adjusting screw of the chain clamp, set it so that the links are directed towards the grindstone, select the required sharpening angle.

The chain is mounted on a support in a special vice, an angle is set. A sharpening disc is brought down to each tooth.

There are two ways to sharpen a chain of a chainsaw on a machine:

1. Consistently, one after another, with a change in polarity.

2. Through a tooth, without changing polarity. At first, those going in one direction are sharpened, then. in a different.

At the end of sharpening, the chain is purged with compressed air, and then placed in clean oil for several hours. This method of sharpening is the most accurate, but requires a certain amount of time.

Below we propose to see how the chainsaw is sharpened using the machine in the video:

Sharpening with an angle grinder

This way. one of the cheapest and most popular. The process takes only a few minutes, however, it requires certain skills in handling an angle grinder.

The main feature of this method is that you do not need to remove the chain and install it in the clamp. It remains on the body, grinding occurs in the same place. Before sharpening a chain of a chainsaw, an angle grinder, you need to get a used metal disk, 2.5 mm thick.

Sharpening takes place at minimum speed with an angle grinder, the teeth are machined one by one. When working, you must follow safety precautions and use glasses and gloves.

other methods

You can also sharpen a chain with a saw using other tools. The hand engraver is very popular. lightweight and compact. The chain is removed from the saw, after which each tooth is processed by an engraver. Additional devices in this case are not required.

When sharpening by any method, it is necessary to bring all the teeth to the same length. Otherwise, the chain goes astray and cracks form in it.
