How to start a brushcutter correctly

The easiest ways to start the lawnmower

The use of gasoline mowers is caused by the need to process lawn or garden areas, open areas. During use, the lawnmower and more specifically its mechanical components are subject to high internal and external stress. To make the tool work most effectively from the very beginning of purchase, and for a long time did not break down, it is necessary to run in the string trimmer petrol

before use. This is done in stationary conditions by a trained specialist or the owner of the product himself, as in the process there are no complex operations. The main thing is to know how to properly run the power tool so as not to cause errors. With this question, you can also turn to a specialist who sells you a new, not run-in, scythe or who performs overhauls on the replacement of drive units.

Explaining whether your chain saw needs running-in, let us point out the advantages of such an event:

start, brushcutter, correctly
  • The new tool is lubricated evenly;
  • The lapping of all parts is performed;
  • The product smoothly enters the working mode;
  • Comfortable inspection of the tool in case of need to regulate the interaction of mechanisms to stabilize work processes.

The last point also allows you to check the quality of the engine during running-in after the overhaul, when the smooth commissioning also takes place. Run-in operations are also performed in a similar way after the s in the engine, gearbox and other mechanisms have been changed.

How to properly run in a new lawnmower

And so, if you are wondering where and how to run-in a lawn mower

correctly, the best solution is to follow precisely the instruction manual, which conscientious manufacturers supply together with the general instructions for use of the grass trimmer. But before you perform this activity of running in properly and accurately, you should prepare a special fuel mixture containing high quality gasoline and oil, whose brands are listed in the instruction manual used for the grass trimmer. The biggest effect is achieved if:

  • the octane number of gasoline is not lower than 95;
  • only use oil of the correct consistency;
  • Running-in and adjustment of the grass trimmer in a complex mode, taking into account the total time of work, forced pauses, and ignition.

It should also be remembered that bypassing the STIHL brushcutter and other well-known brand series does not protect the device from preventive maintenance performed every six months.

Today, there are many video reviews on running in a gasoline brushcutter, explaining the following steps:

  • Using gasoline and brand oil, mix them in a clean bowl in the ratio of 1:25, where per 100 g. 2.5 liters of oil (e.g. 2-cycle oil).
  • Check the lubrication of the bottom gearbox and add oil as necessary.
  • Start the engine and let it idle for 5 minutes, then accelerate every 20-30 seconds. Half power without hard feeds. Total process time. up to 15 minutes.
  • Start the engine and let it idle for 5 minutes, then pump it up every 20-30 seconds. at half power without sudden feeds. The total length of the process. up to 15 minutes.
  • Allow the machine to rest for 20 minutes.
  • Having charged the spool of the required diameter, run in the lower gear by mowing soft grass for 5 minutes with a break of 5-10 minutes. Perform 4 repetitions.
  • If everything went according to the instructions, the gasoline trimmer is ready to use.
  • If necessary, every 2-3 hours additional lubrication is injected into the lower gearbox.
  • Total run-in time. 3-4 hours.

When making the running-in, you should not forget about observing the time of mowing and rest, so as not to cause overheating of the engine and the gearbox. In this case, it is recommended to organize the working mode in the ratio of 15x15min. In case of strong heat. 10×20.

Pre-Start Preparations

Let’s start with getting ready for work. How to bring the lawnmower in a state of full readiness for use?

First reassemble it if it is disassembled. Detachable rod securely fasten in the latches. Carefully check that the cutting attachment is properly secured, especially if it is a blade or circular saw blade. Gasoline grass trimmers are usually extremely powerful, and the rotation speed of the cutting equipment in them is fantastic. A poorly secured blade can therefore firstly injure the operator and secondly cause additional vibration in the tool, which can lead to its breakage.

Gasoline models are most often equipped with a two-stroke engine, so they require the preparation of the fuel mixture. What is its purpose? Since these motors do not have a crankcase and a separate system for oil lubrication, this role is performed directly by the combustible mixture.

It is prepared in certain proportions and for one filling. Do not dilute several liters at once, with “reserve”, because the composition should always be fresh.

Hand-held petrol grass trimmers: weight and handle type

Sometimes the buyer makes the mistake of thinking that there is no need to consider the weight and type of handle when choosing a unit. This is a misconception. Because the weight will determine the smooth operation time of the operator. The heavier the machine, the less time you work.

As a rule, powerful grass trimmers can weigh from six to ten pounds. If you have decided to choose this particular unit, then you need to carefully examine its equipment. These models always have shoulder straps that make it easier to work.

If you are reviewing a model, then pay attention to the type of handle. When you’re working with a trimmer, you need to hold it tightly and confidently. Most hand-held petrol mowers have a T-shaped handle, it is convenient and practical.

Sometimes the buyer is mistaken in thinking that there is no need to consider the weight and type of handle when choosing a machine. This is a misconception. After all, the weight will determine the uninterrupted work time of the operator. The heavier the machine, the less time you will work.

As a rule, powerful grass trimmers can weigh from six to ten pounds. If you have decided to choose this particular unit, then you need to closely examine its equipment. These models always have shoulder straps, which greatly facilitate the work.

In this model overview, please also note the handle type. After all, working with a trimmer, you need to hold it firmly and confidently. Most hand-held petrol grass trimmers have a T-handle, it is convenient and practical.

Inspection of lawnmower gear and its lubrication

Checking the gearbox before starting a petrol grass trimmer should be done on a regular basis. The absence of lubricant or too little lubricant increases friction in the gear train, which always runs at quite high speeds. The gears overheat as a result. The gearbox in a brushcutter fails. To prevent the occurrence of such a failure during operation and helps regular inspection.

If you find, before starting the gasoline grass mower, an insufficient amount of lubricant in the gearbox or its absence in the housing put “LITOL”. To do this, you need to unscrew the screw on the bend of the gear housing and fill with “LITOL” in an amount of 1-2 ml.

Working with a gasoline trimmer for a long time, every 8-10 hours, add grease to the gearbox boom.

How to mix the right fuel: Fuel = Petrol Oil

Oil. high quality two-stroke oil for high speed equipment (10-15 thousand rpm). rpm, about 200 rpm). Do not use motorcycle oils (low engine speed) or oils for water vehicles (different cooling system). their use does not provide the necessary lubrication of the piston group and parts of the entire engine! You can use, for example, oils from the manufacturers Husqvarna, STIHL or Champion.

Gasoline. any pure high-octane gasoline (number 92 or higher, density within 750-770 kg/m3). The purity of the gasoline must be:

Proceed to run-in of the lawnmower

Do not rush the grass trimmer immediately after starting. Let the engine idle for about 5 minutes to warm up. While it is warming up, adjust the air flow with the air damper lever so that the bobbin with the line or the blade does not rotate. Once the tool is warmed up, open the air supply fully by moving the lever to the “ON” position and squeeze the throttle trigger 1/2 and hold for about 2030 seconds. Then we need to release the gas and let the trimmer work for 30 to 40 seconds at idle. Keep cutting in this mode for 1015 minutes. Then turn off and let it rest for 1520 minutes.

After the mower has cooled down, continue running in the engine according to the previous scheme. Start the grass trimmer while it’s still hot and with the choke open. Try not to hold the gas for a long time because the moving parts of the tool are only lapping against each other. And don’t let the engine idle for a long time because it might overheat.

The next step is to run the reducer of the petrol grasshopper. To do this you need to choose an area with soft, young grass. Mow for 510 minutes with startup 1/22/3 of full throttle. After that take a break for 20 25 minutes. Repeat the cycle 34 times.

In general, the lawnmower runs in accordance with the described algorithm until the fuel mixture in the tank is used up. After that the tool is ready for continuous work. Always check the temperature of the gearbox and engine while working. Do not overheat.

Servicing your brushcutter (grass trimmer)

The engine. Keep the air filter clean at all times (no dirt or shavings); the foam filter should be oiled. Check the fuel filter once a week and replace it if necessary, if the tool is used intensively. Checking the tightening of nuts and screws. before starting work. Debris removal from the muffler (or its grid) and plugs, if necessary.

Cutting discs. Cutting edges must be well and properly sharpened using necessary templates and files (emery boards), observing angles of cutting parts depending on disc brand. Wind double-sided discs regularly by 180° and wear evenly. A blunt disc or a disc with poor or improper sharpening will cut poorly and thus overload the motor, resulting in an accelerated reduction in motor life.

Trimmer line and trimmer heads. Use only mowing line specifically designed for trimmers. do not use wire or metal hoses! Use only a trimmer line of the diameter recommended by the manufacturer. Wind the bobbin tightly but do not over wind it. Clean debris off the mowing head and lubricate as necessary. Use a worn or deformed brushcutter head may damage the gearbox and/or shaft of the brushcutter.

Angular gearbox. As necessary, clean off dirt (this “coat” does not allow the reducer to cool normally) and make a grease Husqvarna, or similar, for the gear pair.

Protective covers. Do not operate your brushcutter without its guard, otherwise it can overload the brushcutter engine and endanger the life of the operator and bystanders. You should use only the blade guard provided by the manufacturer for each type of cutting equipment.

The hedge trimmer repair by itself

It should be noted that it is not always possible to repair a brushcutter yourself, but in most cases, small repairs are within everyone’s power.

If the grass trimmer motor broke, and you are not an auto mechanic and not an electrician, it is better not to try to repair the mechanism. You might not be able to reassemble it yourself. There can be such malfunctions: low compression in the engine, the engine is jammed, the carburetor is out of order. If these combinations of words mean nothing to you, you should not repair your brushcutter by picture and intuition.

It should be noted that the maintenance and repair of chainsaws and brushcutters are similar in many ways.

The grass trimmer consists of a bar, a motor (may be on top or underneath), and a mowing head with blades, various additional elements. What can be repaired here by yourself?

air damper; 2. handle; 3. engine stopping device; 4. throttle control lever;

limiting bracket; 6. boom; 7. cutter bar protection device

1) If your tumbler on/off switch is stuck and you know about simple wiring diagrams, solder, and rosin, you can easily replace the tumbler with a new one. They are sold in electrical and lighting equipment stores.

2) If the wire restrictor of the mowing head has fallen off, it can be screwed to the cutter bar with a flexible copper or aluminum wire. You can also make a new mount from a strip of stainless steel.

3) When a trimmer blade breaks on the cutting head’s cutting drum, it can be easily replaced. You can, of course, just buy a brushcutter head separately and replace it, but a fishing line for a trimmer is hundred percent cheaper. Optimal material is a 0.9 to 1.5 mm trimmer fishing line, nylon or nylon. Measure the diameter of the line you are using at once, before you run out of line. Thinner may tear, thicker causes engine overheating and unnecessary vibration. You need to disassemble the hose reel and wind the line by hand, then reassemble the hose reel.

4) If the rod breaks, it can also be repaired by winding and gluing to wooden slats or iron staples.

5) If the engine begins to vibrate strongly and feels “rough”, you may need to lubricate your brushcutter. Any trimmer for grass is easy to disassemble, it is recommended to lubricate it with technical oil at least once a year.

7) If the grass trimmer is equipped with plastic blades, and they are deformed for some reason, there is a way to replace them with metal ones. To do this, you need to make several blades of stainless steel. At home it is difficult, but the situation can save a turner you know, working at an industrial plant or factory. The blades are attached to the shaft by means of a sleeve with a washer. This improvement will make it possible for the trimmer to mow grass of any hardness. But be careful with such a trimmer.

8) The engine won’t start? To start the engine, even when it’s hot, you may have to close the choke completely to get the engine’s mix richer. Check the gasoline supply, clean, replace the glow plug if necessary.

Let’s start the lawnmower’s running-in period

Do not rush the lawn trimmer immediately after startup. Let the engine idle for about 5 minutes to warm up. While it is warming up, adjust the air supply with the air damper lever so that the bobbin with the line or the blade does not rotate. As soon as the tool is warmed up, we open the air supply by moving the lever to the “ON” position and squeeze the throttle trigger 1/2 and hold for 20 30 seconds. Then release the throttle and let the trimmer idle for 30 to 40 seconds. Keep it this way for 10-15 minutes. Then switch it off and let it rest for 15 20 minutes.

Having cooled the lawnmower we continue running-in the engine according to the previous scheme. Start the grass trimmer when it is hot with the choke already open. Try not to hold the gas for a long time, because moving parts of the tool only rub against each other. And do not let the engine idle for a long time because it can overheat.

The next step is running in the gasoline grass trimmer gearbox. Choose an area with soft, young grass. Mowing for 510 minutes with startup 1/22/3 of full throttle. After that we make a break for 2025 minutes. Repeat the cycle 34 times.

Generally, lawn mower runs in accordance with described algorithm until a full yield of fuel mixture in the tank. after that the tool is ready for continuous work. Monitor the temperature of the gearbox and motor during operation. Do not overheat.

Service the brushcutter (grass trimmer)

Engine. Keep the air filter clean (no dirt or chips) and the foam filter wetted with oil. Check the fuel filter once a week and change it if necessary, if the machine is used a lot. Check nuts and bolts for tightness. before use. Clean carbon deposits from the muffler (or its grid) and plugs as necessary.

Cutting discs. The cutting edges must be well and correctly sharpened using the necessary templates and files (emery boards), observing the cutting angles depending on the brand of blade. Turn the discs over 180° at regular intervals and wear evenly. A blunt disc or a disc with a bad or improper sharpening makes a bad cut and thus overloads the engine, which leads to an accelerated reduction in its service life.

Trimmer line and trimmer heads. Use only mowing line designed specifically for trimmers. do not use wire or metal cords! Use only a line of the same size as recommended by your trimmer manufacturer. Wind the bobbin tightly but not over the coils. Clean the brushcutter head of dirt and lubricate as needed. A worn or deformed head may damage the gearcase and/or shaft of your brushcutter.

Angular gearbox. Clean off dirt as needed (this “coat” prevents proper cooling of the Geareducer) and apply Husqvarna or similar grease to the Geareducer couple.

Protective covers. Do not operate your machine without the safety guard. danger to life and limb and may overload the brushcutter engine. For each type of cutting attachment you should only use a different blade guard that is specified by the manufacturer.

Self-repair brushcutter

It should be noted that it is not always possible to repair a brushcutter yourself, but in most cases, small repairs are within everyone’s power.

If the grass trimmer motor broke, and you are not an auto mechanic and not an electrician, it is better not to try to repair the mechanism. It may be impossible to reassemble it. There can be such problems: low compression in the engine, the engine is jammed, the carburetor is out of order. If these words do not tell you anything, you should not repair brushcutter by picture and intuition.

It should be noted that the maintenance and repair of gasoline saws and brushcutters are similar in many respects.

Trimmers for grass consists of a bar, a motor (it can be from above or below), and a mowing head with blades, various additional elements. What can be repaired by yourself?

air flap; 2. handle; 3. engine stop device; 4. throttle control lever;

limiting bracket; 6. boom; 7. cutting attachment protector;

1) If the on/off rocker switch is stuck and you know about simple wiring diagrams, solder and rosin, you can easily replace the rocker switch with a new one. You can buy them at electrical or lighting fixture stores.

2) If the wire restrictor on the mowing head has fallen off, it can be taped to the cutting head with a piece of flexible copper or aluminum wire. You can also make a new attachment from a stainless steel strip.

3) If the trimmer line breaks in the mowing head reel, nothing is easier than replacing it yourself. You can, of course, just buy a head for brushcutter separately and replace it, but the line for the trimmer will definitely be cheaper. Optimal material here is a line for trimmer from 0.9 to 1.5 mm, nylon or kapron. Measure the diameter of the line you are using at once, before it runs out completely. Thinner may tear, thicker causes overheating of the motor and unnecessary vibration. You need to disassemble the drum and wind the trimmer line by hand, then reassemble the drum.

4) If the bar breaks, it can also be repaired by wrapping and gluing to wooden slats or iron staples.

5) If the engine starts to vibrate strongly and is running “rough”, you may need to lubricate your brushcutter. Any grass trimmer is easy to disassemble, it is recommended to lubricate it with technical oil at least once a year.

7) If the grass trimmer is equipped with plastic knives, and they are deformed for some reason, there is a way to replace them with metal ones. To do this, you need to make a few blades of stainless steel. At home it is a bit difficult, but the situation can save a turner you know, working at an industrial plant or factory. The blades are attached to the shaft by a sleeve with a washer. Such an upgrade will make it possible for the trimmer to mow grass of any hardness. But caution when handling such a trimmer should be increased.

8) Engine does not start? To start the lawn trimmer, even when it is hot, it is sometimes necessary to close the choke completely in order to enrich the lawn trimmer’s mix. Check the gasoline supply, clean and replace the glow plug if necessary.

Inspection of lawnmower gearbox and lubrication

Checking the gearbox before starting a petrol grass trimmer should be done on a regular basis. Lack of lubricant or too little lubricant increases friction in the gearbox at quite high speeds. This results in overheating of the gears as well. Gearbox of brushcutter fails. It helps to prevent such breakdowns during operation and regular inspections.

If you find, before starting the gasoline grasshopper, insufficient or no grease in the gearbox, put “LITOL” in the housing. For this purpose it is necessary to unscrew the screw on a bend of the gear housing and fill up with “LITOL” in quantity of 1-2 ml.

After every 8-10 hours of operation with a gasoline trimmer add oil to the boom gearbox.

Preparation of correct fuel mixture

Before you start your new lawn mower engine you also prepare the correct fuel mixture. As is known for two-stroke engines it is prepared from special two-stroke oil and gasoline, taken in certain ratios. You can find out the proportions from the instructions that come with the tool, or on the label of the lubricant. Check the manual for the recommended fuel and oil type.

Cook small amounts of fuel just enough for one day’s cutting. Use special plastic jerry cans for fuel or separate glass or metal pots. It is best to fill the oil with a medical syringe.

After getting ready to run in a new lawnmower, many people have problems with the fuel mixture. And there is a discrepancy between the tool manufacturer’s instructions and the engine oil manufacturer’s instructions. The first recommends the proportion 1:25. The other recommends 1:50. Who to trust? What to do?

start, brushcutter, correctly

According to experts, if the manufacturers write the proportion 1:25 or 1:30 in the instructions to the brushcutter, then most likely it is either a cheap tool with poor cooling, or the manufacturer does not know what oil the consumer will add. But here we have to understand that the excess of lubricant is not the best way to affect the performance of grass trimmer. Excess oil doesn’t burn out completely when the engine is running. It cokes, clogs the cylinder and the piston.

What to do in this situation when running in a new tool? It is ideal to buy the oil that the mower manufacturer recommends. In the case of running-in engines, when there is no possibility to buy the recommended oil, it is better to buy a good Husqvarna two-stroke oil for the gasoline-driven tools of the same name. It is not cheap, but it lasts long. You have to mix it the way it is written on the can.

Remember, it is better to use the oil manufacturer’s recommended oil ratio. But it is better to find out by experiment if the recommended oil ratio is correct. If the oil proportion recommended by the manufacturer makes the engine leak oil and you can see the oil stains, you need to increase the oil proportion.

complex reasons for lawn mower failure

If the step-by-step troubleshooting failed and your grasshopper still fails to start or stops, it is worth inspecting the carburetor and the engine. A clogged carburetor can be one of the causes of an unstable tool. Three main problems can be distinguished here:

  • Clogging of channels or jets. Cleaned all this with special washes or blown with a powerful jet of compressed air from a compressor. Do not use a needle or wire, as it can damage the piston or cylinder;
  • Wear of carburetor gasket. Exit. replacement of the failed gasket;
  • Pressure tightness is broken. To check this indicator, you can use an ordinary household tonometer, replacing it with a suitable pressure gauge. Watch the readings: if they do not change. everything is fine, but if the pressure starts to drop, it means that some part of the carburetor is faulty. You have to find it and replace with new one.

If everything is okay with the carburetor, the gasoline grass trimmer may not start due to wear of the piston group. If a piston or cylinder has chips, scratches, or scoring, it must be replaced. Piston rings must be checked. A slight play of the piston when rocking the connecting rod indicates that it is time to change the rings. This procedure is best left to the professionals of the service center.

The mower must be used and stored according to the following rules

To keep your lawn mower running smoothly in the future, it is important to store and operate it in good conditions:

  • keep a close eye on the cooling system during operation, clean the housing ducts and the starter ribs carefully and in time;
  • If necessary, use solvents, kerosene and other cleaning agents for cleaning;
  • do not clean the tool “hot”. let it cool down;
  • Strictly follow the instructions regarding the mode of operation, otherwise you can overheat the engine;
  • If you do not plan to use the mower within the next month, drain the fuel mixture from the mower, i.e. к. Over time it breaks down into heavy fractions that will definitely clog the carburetor passages;
  • after refueling, let the trimmer idle until it stops, this will help you completely remove the working mixture.

Before winter storage, do the following steps:

  • Completely disassemble the sawmill, rinse and clean all the parts you can;
  • inspect parts for damage; if necessary, repair misalignments, rips, bends, and any other malfunctions;
  • Pour enough oil into the gearbox and clean the air filter;
  • you can partially disassemble the motor, flush, purge and lubricate all moving parts;
  • In order to lubricate the piston, you need to unscrew the plug, lift the starter piston to its dead center, pour a little oil into the spark plug hole and a couple of times scroll the crankshaft;
  • If you are not storing the mower indoors, wrap the engine with an oiled rag.

Remember, careful adherence to the rules, will allow you to forget about bad lawn mower starting for several seasons.
