How to replace line in any trimmer

How to replace line in any trimmer
So, first unscrew the nozzle. This should be done by rotating the drum to the right. Here we have a drum with the remnants of an old fishing line in our hands. We open it. Most often, the lid is closed with latches that can be opened with a screwdriver, threading it through the holes and slightly pressing. Or you need to squeeze the latch and turn the cover in the direction of the arrow. In this case, the lid itself must be held, since reels with automatic line feed have a spring that, when straightened, can throw out all the inner parts of the drum. Gently pulling out the reel, remove the scraps of fishing line from it.

Now you need to take 5 meters of new line and fold it in half (to find the middle). In the middle part of the reel there is a notch (in some designs. a hole), for which we need to hook our fishing line. There is also an arrow on the spool showing the direction of winding. An important detail. if the reel has two compartments, then one half of the line should be wound in one direction, and the other in the other. When finishing winding, you need to leave 15-20 cm of fishing line free. There are also two notches on the top ring of the coil, through which these free ends need to be passed. We dealt with the winding itself.

The last step in the line replacement process is to assemble the drum. First you need to install the spring and washers in their place. Then, holding the reel with one hand, with the other you need to thread the ends of the line into the corresponding holes on the sides of the nozzle. After that, install the coil in its place, pulling the line and being careful not to dislodge the spring. When all the internal elements of the nozzle take their places, you can close the drum with a lid. You just need to make some effort to ensure that the latches fall into place. Voila! The mowing head is ready for use!
When choosing a fishing line for your motor scythe (gasoline or electric), you should dwell on some points, which we will talk about in detail.

Line diameter.
Engine power determines which maximum line diameter can be used for a given braid. For example, the manufacturer of an electric trimmer with a power of up to 1 kW recommends using a line of ø2 mm, and at values of about 500 W. only ø1.5 mm. Also, the manufacturer of any heavy duty curved bar trimmer recommends using a ø2mm line.
The gasoline engine is more durable than the electric one, so you can use thicker line there, which means stronger line, which allows you to cut more grass and work longer.
For grass cutters with a straight bar, you can select the line according to the following simple algorithm: the diameter in millimeters corresponds to the engine volume in tens of cubic centimeters. For example, for a Husqvarna 128R lawn mower with an engine capacity of about 25 cm3, use a line of ø2.5 ± 0.2 mm. For more powerful hedge trimmers with volumes of more than 40 cm3, only the geometric dimensions of the outlet openings of the mowing head. no more than 4 mm are the limitation of the diameter of the line.
So, a thin fishing line (about 1.5 mm) cuts well cultivated lawn grass, and a thick one (for example, 3.0-3.5 mm) successfully destroys weeds and even young shrubs.

Line shape.
The simplest and cheapest to manufacture is a round line. However, the requirements of ergonomics and environmental protection limit its use. due to its physical properties, it creates an unacceptably high level of noise (which is comparable to the noise of the engine itself). This is the classic Husqvarna round line or Oregon RoundLine or Chipmaster.
To reduce the noise produced by the line, it is given a special shape. they make it spiral like Oregon DuoLine Plus (noise reduction by 15 dB) or with special transverse grooves like Husqvarna Whisper (-8 dB).
Following the school laws of physics, the “working” part of the line during the mowing process is only the end surface, not the side surface. However, to increase the “sharpness” of the line, i.e. to increase efficiency, the cross section is changed from round to faceted: star-shaped, square or square with teeth. Oregon StarLine, Nylsaw or Flexiblade.
For example, according to the calculations of experts, Oregon Nylsaw line, due to its square profile, is 27% “sharper” than its round counterpart, which clearly affects the increase in mowing speed.

How to Reel the Line on the Hammer Trimmer Reel

The trimmer is the most common machine used for trimming grass and cutting small bushes. This device is distinguished by its own simplicity in maintenance, easy control during its operation, and due to its low weight, even ladies can use it. Everyone understands that for high-quality performance of work on mowing grass, the correct selection of cutting tools is required. For the latter, special cutting attachments (discs, knives) or trimmer heads with a fishing line inside are used in trimmers. Nozzles and fishing line are a consumable tool, if the knives can be sharpened, then when the fishing line is used up, it must be changed. Next, we will very carefully tell you how to correctly change the fishing line.

The grass mowing head is a cylindrical body in which a spool (bobbin) is inserted with a fishing line (cord) tucked in here. This design can be installed on both a gasoline trimmer and an electronic trimmer. Heads differ in the method of threading and feeding the cord and there are 3 types.
  • Automatic. The line is fed if the user lowers the engine speed. Although the automatic line feed is comfortable, if a huge amount of work is being done, such bobbins have one drawback. a high thread consumption.
  • Automatic. The introduction of this type of heads does not ask the user to perform complex manipulations. The principle of their operation is designed in such a way that the cord is lengthened automatically like an office cord when the device is operating at full speed. It is enough to hit the trimmer head on the ground a little (this removes the blocking of the cord), and the line is pulled out of the bobbin due to centrifugal force, after which it is cut to a suitable length with a knife placed on the protective cover.
  • Manual. To lengthen the cord, the device must be stopped, after completion, the line is manually stretched.

Of the options above, automatic bobbins are the best option. It should also be noted that there are single-string trimmer coils (used only for trimming the grass) and two-string ones, which are used for mowing the highest grass and small, with thin trunks of bushes.

Before starting the process of changing the cord, it is necessary for users of trimmers to remove and disassemble the coil. Let’s see how to do it.

The trimmer cutter head consists of several parts: a guard, a spring (on select models), a bobbin with a cord and a cover.

Attention! While proceeding with any maintenance of the electronic unit, it must be disconnected from the network.

In trimmers, in most cases, 5 options for mounting the mowing head are used.

To remove the trimmer head, you will need to completely disassemble it.

To remove the cover that covers the inside of the head, you need to press on the latches (latches) located on its 2 sides.

wind, line, trimmer

In this embodiment, the head is screwed onto the gearbox shaft. To remove it, you will need to fix such a shaft. For this purpose, in similar trimmers, for example, in the Huter and Champion machines, a hole is foreseen through which, of course, stick either a narrow screwdriver or an iron bar.

What is needed to remove the bobbin, follow the usual 2 steps.

  • Insert a screwdriver into the hole and lock the shaft.
  • Grasp the head body and start turning it clockwise. Turn in this direction based on the circumstances that the thread cut on the shaft is left.

What is the duration of the project, which trimmer model is used, the type, thickness and length of the line are selected. You will like the diameter of the cord from 1.3.5 to 4 mm. It is not difficult to think that the thicker you fill the cord, the more tough and thick grass it is able to cut.

Almost always use a universal line with a diameter of 4 mm.

If your goal is to find out what line size your mower is using, there are 3 methods.

  • View information about the thickness of the cord in the annotation to the device.
  • Look at the bobbin itself. On its surface, and possibly information on the probable diameters of the fishing line.
  • Stick the line through the exit hole. If it passes there without much difficulty, then a cord of such a diameter can be used.

The line is wound on a reel in the mowing head. Therefore, at first it must be opened (this decision was discussed above). There are 4.5 methods of winding the cord.

To correctly find how many meters of fishing line will be needed for a particular reel, you need to wind it on the bobbin in such a way that the skein does not exceed the diameter of the sides. If the line sticks out over the edges of the spool, you cannot stick it into the casing. If you have determined the length of the material, you need to thread it into the bobbin, so do the following.

  • It is necessary to fold the fishing line in half, so that one end of it is 10-15 cm longer from the other.
  • Please note that the bobbin is split into 3.5 parts by the central collar, from which charging begins. Find a groove in it and stick a cord there, bent twice, applying a little effort.
  • It is of fundamental importance to find in which direction the line is wound on the reel. If you look closely, then there is an option to find an arrow on the bobbin or an inscription with an arrow indicating in which direction the winding should be carried out. There are times when there is no arrow on the reel. Under these circumstances, look for the arrow drawn on the mowing head and wind the cord in the opposite direction.
  • Winding should be done carefully, turn to turn, with the highest thread tension.
  • If the laying of the cord is completed, it will be necessary to first fix the small end of the line by inserting it into a groove suitable for the diameter on the side of the reel.
  • The second end, the longer one, is attached to the groove on the back of the bobbin.
  • After fixing the fishing line, cut off its ends, leaving an allowance of about 10 cm.
  • Next, you need to install the loaded bobbin into the mowing head. For this purpose, alternately inserting and pulling the thread on weekends and holidays of the head holes, place the bobbin in the casing, then, applying the required force, pull the line out of the fixing grooves and tighten it.
  • Now, of course, put on the lid and fix it using latches.

In some reels, the 2nd method of securing the cord is provided: you can charge 2.7 pieces of thread, instead of one book, folded in half. The line is changed according to the following method.

  • Before changing how to charge the newest thread into the coil in a different way, determine how many meters it will be needed using the method discussed above.
  • Bend one end of the cord in the form of a hook.
  • Find on the day of the bobbin the hole created to fix the fishing line, and stick the end of the thread bent in a loop there.
  • It is required to wind the cord according to the direction of the arrow to the desired level, not exceeding the diameter of the coil.
  • Do the same for the 2nd bobbin slot.
  • The assembly of the head is no different from the method that was given when threading the bobbin with a double-folded piece of line was considered.

For Shtil brushcutters there is a very common and quick method of changing the line without disassembling the mowing head, to join which there is an option by watching this video.

The ends of the cord protruding from the holes in the casing can be cut to the desired length after the part is installed in the trimmer. This can be done, of course, by 2 methods:

  • by turning on the trimmer (when rotating, the ends of the fishing line will be cut off against the knife, fixed for this purpose on the protective casing);
  • cutting off the excess ends with scissors so that they do not touch the casing body.

The second method is used for which the structure is intended, if it was necessary to put a cord of a huge diameter, and the trim knife is not able to shorten it.

If the filament was loaded into the mowing head, alas, the length of the protruding ends of the cord is not enough, then they need to be lengthened before starting the device. this applies to the head with manual adjustment. But there are cases with the use of an automatic mowing head, when, due to the insufficient length of the protruding ends of the cord, they are not extended automatically. Then you need to turn off the unit (on an electronic device, you certainly need to unplug the plug from the socket), manually press the button located at the bottom of the part, and pull out a little line. After this procedure, the cord will again be able to advance due to centrifugal force, if you set the highest spindle speed.

Whatever thickness of the fishing line you set, you should keep in mind: in order not to constantly interrupt work and not change the cord, you should avoid areas where the working tool touches hard surfaces (pebbles, curbs, thick dry branches, etc.).

Some users of trimmers ask themselves the question: what is the option to change the cord, which is usually used in this type of device? They begin to carry out dangerous experiments, installing in the mowing head iron as it is also called copper wire, iron cables or strings, also an ordinary fishing line.

If you install a metal cable instead of a fishing line, then the trimmer is converted into a dangerous device not only for the user, but also for others. This fact is explained by the fact that at the time of the operation of the unit, the metal cable will work evenly, its ends will unravel, and small pieces of wire will fly in different directions at high speed.

A similar thing happens with the use of metal or copper wire, only with the only difference that the pieces that have come off will be larger, and there are variations to cause significant injury.

If you accidentally hook your or someone else’s leg while working with an iron cable (wire), then a strong and deep tissue incision, and sometimes amputation of toes, is guaranteed for you. The manufacturer does not use nylon for this purpose in vain, since it is quite light and strong, and when it comes off it does not fly far away and cannot cause injury.

To use a fishing line in a trimmer instead of a standard one, of course, of course, but this will add unnecessary hassle for you, as it quickly wears out, breaks, mows slowly for cutting tough grass. In addition, when carrying out work, extra time is lost to replace a broken tool at any time.

In reality, the installation of an ordinary fishing line is justified if the user is going to mow the grass near the fence, especially if it is from the netting. Here, in order to protect the standard and from time to time expensive cord from wear and tear, it is changed to fishing line, which is not a pity. Usually, in order to change the line to the line, it must be selected with a greater thickness. 2-3 mm.

When ennobling a summer cottage, park areas and other places where it is required to mow all kinds of plants, it is often necessary to change the cutting tool in the trimmer. This is due to the fact that the standard cord installed in the mowing head can only be operated with grass. However, when a bush or young growth of trees appears on the path of an employee, the fishing line has no right to cope with such a task, and it must be replaced with a more effective cutting tool.

The Russian car trimmer industry has foreseen such situations, and supplemented their products with a mass of attachments in the form of knives with several “petals” or a type of discs similar to circular saws.

If you replace the fishing line with a knife with several “petals”, then such an inventory can be used to mow both higher grass and plants with thick and dry trunks. And by changing the fishing line to a disk, the user of the brushcutter can easily cut down bushes or small trees.

Knives and discs are installed according to the following method.

  • It will be immediately necessary to remove, by locking the shaft, the mowing head (turn clockwise) or the nut with the boot, if the unit has not yet been used.
  • Set the saw, in other words, the cutting knife so that they are put on a small protrusion (sleeve).

For the best understanding of the process of changing tools, search this video.

For users of trimmers, both gasoline and electronic, when there are tasks with a cord. “Advanced” owners of mowers effortlessly manage the difficulties that have arisen, understanding why this is happening, for beginners it is a problem that does not have an optimal explanation. But in fact, our client can be solved quite easily. The most common difficulties that happen with the fishing line, the subsequent.

If the line breaks frequently, this may cause the following prerequisites:

  • pebbles, small branches and other solid obstacles come across in the grass;
  • the user mows the grass close to the fence, if it is mesh, then it breaks off the “antennae” even faster;
  • poor quality of the cord (it is recommended to purchase a high-quality one);
  • the outlet holes in the mowing head are worn out, due to which the line is erased on the sharp edges of the bushings and breaks off (a complete part change will be needed).

Select the reel of the petrol cutter (brushcutter). trimmer head or bobbin of electric trimmer with line

In the main, the cord ends quickly if you often knock on the ground with an automatic head, in other words, press it down very much. The spool is unlocked, and the line, lengthening, is cut with a knife. Another reason that the cord is rapidly ending is the incorrect operation of the device with an automatic head: the user often lowers the engine speed when mowing. However, as we remember, the automatic head is designed in such a way that a new portion of the fishing line is supplied with each decrease in revolutions, therefore it is rapidly consumed.

It happens that the thread is unwound if the spring in the automatic head is weakened. The fishing line is constantly pulled out and cut off with a knife installed on the casing, which increases its consumption. To check this, remove the cover and turn on the unit. If the line “climbed”, then you will need to change the spring.

The precondition that the cord unwinds after starting the unit is also the weakening of the spring from the inside of the head. And in addition, there are times when the mowing head flies apart when the unit is turned on, and the spring installed here disappears. Inexperienced users do not notice the absence of a spring and assemble this unit without it. Therefore, the cord does not hold, and flies out under the influence of centrifugal force.

An automatic or automatic head should feed the line without stopping the unit. If it does not come out, then the prerequisites will be as follows:

  • the fishing line is not wound correctly in the reel, due to which the latter does not spin;
  • the cord is wound unevenly, and the thread can get stuck between the turns (the thread should be wound neatly, turn to turn, without distortions);
  • very short ends of the thread come out of the holes, for this reason there is not enough centrifugal force to extract them, and the line is not fed (it is recommended to always adjust the length of the cord before starting the unit, slightly tightening it);
  • the line is stuck together (will be discussed later).

This problem occurs in most cases due to the use of a bad cord. During the operation of the device, the trimmer head heats up, and the bad line melts there, sticking to each other. Also, sintering of the threads occurs when the fishing line meets a hard obstacle. Then there is a sharp braking of the cord, after which it is pulled into the head, where it sticks. Some owners of units advise to lubricate the cord with mineral oil or sprinkle it with silicone spray after winding it on a bobbin. Others recommend winding less thread onto the spool. Alas, it is better to immediately take a high-quality product, at the production stage of which the manufacturer took into account the factor of overheating of the head, and the thread will not stick together.

How to wind the line onto the trimmer spool

05 July 2018

The trimmer is a great solution for those who have a large garden or lawn near the house that needs to be constantly trimmed. But like any other tool, sometimes it requires intervention. After some time, it will become necessary to replace certain elements, and this will have to be learned.

How can this be done? To replace the main cutting element, you must first select it correctly. In principle, the instruction manual for brushcutters should indicate the diameter of the thread to be used in it.

When you have acquired the required cutting element, try to install it correctly. It should be noted that there are a huge number of videos on the Internet that will help you figure out how to properly thread the line into the trimmer coil.

How to change the line on the trimmer

Below we have provided step-by-step instructions for replacing the trimmer thread.

The first thing to do is to unplug the tool and turn off the engine. Then you need to remove the trimmer head. This can be done using a simple screwdriver and dropping it into the hole of the gearbox to prevent the shaft from turning. And then just unscrew

They are usually unscrewed in a clockwise direction, but different models have different mechanisms, so it may have to be turned in the opposite direction. But if suddenly, for some reason, you cannot figure it out, then we strongly recommend that you refer to the user manual to understand how to disconnect it.

Second. After removing the mowing head, open it. This can be done by means of clamps that are located opposite each other. By pressing on them, you can remove the head cover, and then pull out the spool on which the line is wound. By pulling it out, you can determine what type it belongs to. There are bobbins one-piece and two-piece

We analyze how to thread the line into the trimmer spool in two versions

So, there is only one option. we load the line into a single-section reel. The prepared piece of thread is folded in half and pushed into the spool. Then, we begin to wind both ends in the same direction, which will be indicated by the arrow on the spool. At the end of winding, do not forget to make sure that different ends of the thread are looking in different directions.

Option two. winding the line with a two-piece reel. The pre-prepared thread is divided into two parts, and its ends must be fixed: this must be done by placing them in special fasteners

Winding is carried out, as in the first case, along the arrow indicated on the spool. Both segments should be wound so that they do not cross. Further, the ends of the thread should be fixed in the grooves and divorced on opposite sides.

The spring is then inserted into the reel and the whole thing is placed in the mowing head. When placing the spool in the trimmer, you need to gently hold the spring parallel while inserting the line into the slots of the brush head. And in the end, it just needs to be secured with the final part, that is, with a lid.

After threading the trimmer, you need to check it. If you did everything correctly, everything will work, but if you make a mistake, we recommend that you read the article again, or even better, if you watch the video on how to install a line on a reel in a trimmer.

How to remove the line from the trimmer spool

Over time, the cutting element of the head wears out, and it becomes necessary to pull out the remnants of the old line. Not everyone knows how to do this. Our step-by-step instructions plus a video on how to pull the thread from the trimmer spool, which you can find on the net, will help in solving this issue.

It is necessary to disassemble the mowing head

Remove the cover using the clips

We clean the remnants of cutting material

Hard ? Of course not. But if, nevertheless, doubts creep into you that for some reason you cannot do this, then, of course, find and watch the video how to pull out or how to wind the thread on the reel of a brushcutter.

How to replace the line on an electric trimmer

In fact, it makes no difference which oblique you use, be it electric or gasoline. Threading is the same. The only difference is that if you use a gas streamer, you get more freedom, since you are not limited by the cable that is present on the electric streamer.

Yes, do not hesitate to use the special videos on installing or threading the line in an electric scooter, which can teach you much faster than simple reading.

How to wind the line on the trimmer correctly

A garden trimmer is a useful tool that makes life much easier for any gardener or private home owner. The grass just rushes in the summer, especially after the rains, so you can’t go anywhere without it. But over time, sooner or later, the line in it will end, and it will be necessary to insert a replaceable skein of new line. Some summer residents get stumped. how to do it yourself? So our article will help them.

Changing the line on the trimmer

This article will tell you how to change the line on the trimmer. For some people, this job may not be easy. But the step-by-step instructions that are available here will help you in this matter.

So the first thing to do is remove the gear cover. We combine the hole on the side of the curly lower washer and the axial recess, insert a screwdriver to fix the shaft from scrolling. Now unscrew the nozzle. The thread on the shaft, as a rule, has a reverse thread, take this into account when unscrewing.

Next, the disassembly of the nozzle follows. There, the lid is secured with latches through the holes. So you just have to push these clips into the holes and the cover will come off. If the attachment has automatic / semi-automatic line feeding modes, it means that there is a spring inside, which can simply fly out when the lid is opened, be prepared for this. We lay out all the removed parts neatly in order.

Now it’s time to take the fishing line and unwind 5 meters from it, cut off this piece. Pay attention to its thickness, do not wind a line of greater thickness on the unit than specified in the manual for the tool. Otherwise, there will be an increased load on the engine and higher fuel consumption during operation. We bend the measured line in half to find the middle and get a loop.

There are a couple of notches in the middle of the coil, sometimes these are not notches, but holes located opposite each other. With a loop we cling to one of the grooves and wind the fishing line counterclockwise. If the reel has 2 compartments, then we wind each end of the fishing line on them separately. Leave the last 15-20 cm free and clamp them while in the recesses of the coil.

We assemble the device again, pull the free ends of the fishing line into the holes on the body. We put on the cover, snapping the latches into their grooves. Now you can pull out these loose ends of the line.

It remains only to attach the working node in place, as in the first paragraph. Do not forget about reverse rotation on screwing.

Now you can learn how to wind the line around the trimmer. Actually, the whole process was detailed above. No time-consuming operations requiring the presence of specialists. Your brushcutter is ready for use again.

The garden trimmer is a mobile hand-held tool for cutting grass. It is enough to put in order the entire territory of the summer cottage, but where there is a lawn mower, it is necessary for cutting grass in hard-to-reach places, near trees, bushes, hedges. Lightweight and compact trimmers do more than just tackle tall grass, some models can cut even small shrubs.

Garden trimmer device

The cutting part is made in the form of a fishing line, less often knives or a disk attached to a drum. The top of the drum is covered with a casing. The fishing line is a consumable item. The cutting part is supported by a rod, the length of which can be adjusted. The bar has a handle, a shoulder strap. The main differences between different models relate to the engine design.

engine’s type

Electrical. lightweight and easy to operate, not noisy. Varieties:

  • Engine at the bottom. easy to use, small in size, power up to 650 W.
  • Motor at the top. power about 1 kW, can be with knives or replaceable attachments.

Gasoline. for large areas, since they are independent of the cable. Powerful for all types of vegetation, even shrubs. Engine:

  • Two-stroke. you need to prepare a mixture of gasoline and oil.
  • Four-stroke. gasoline and oil are filled separately.

High cord consumption

Basically, the cord runs out quickly if you hit the ground frequently with the semi-automatic head or push it down hard. The spool is unlocked, and the line, lengthening, is cut with a knife. Another reason that the cord runs out quickly is improper operation of the machine with an automatic head: the user often cuts the engine speed when mowing. But as we remember, the automatic head is designed in such a way that it is with each decrease in speed that a new portion of the line is supplied, so it is quickly consumed.

How to change the line in the trimmer

The trimmer is the most common machine used for cutting grass and small bushes. This device is distinguished by its simplicity in service, simple operation during operation, and due to its low weight, even women can cope with it. It is no secret that for high-quality performance of work on mowing grass, the correct selection of cutting tools is required. As the latter, special cutting attachments (discs, knives) or trimmer heads with a fishing line inside are used in trimmers. Nozzles and fishing line are consumable tools, but if the knives can be sharpened, then when the line is used up, it must be replaced. In this article, we will tell you in as much detail as possible how to properly replace the fishing line.

The line is flying out

The reason that the cord unwinds after starting the unit can also be a weakening of the spring inside the head. In addition, there are times when the mowing head flies apart when the machine is turned on, and the spring installed in it is lost. Inexperienced users do not notice the absence of a spring and assemble this unit without it. Therefore, the cord does not hold, and under the influence of centrifugal force flies out.

What can be used instead of fishing line

Many trimmer users are wondering: what can replace the default cord used in this kind of machines? Begin unsafe experiments by installing metal or copper wires, metal ropes or strings, and regular fishing line in the mowing head.

If you install a metal cable instead of a fishing line, the trimmer turns into a dangerous device not only for the user, but also for others. This fact is explained by the fact that during the operation of the unit, the steel cable will gradually be triggered, its ends will unravel, and small pieces of wire will fly in different directions at high speed.

A similar thing happens when using steel or copper wire, with the only difference that the pieces that have come off will be larger and can cause significant injury.

And if you accidentally hook your or someone else’s foot while working with a steel cable (wire), then a strong and deep tissue incision, and in some cases amputation of toes, is guaranteed. It is not in vain that the manufacturer uses nylon for these purposes, since it is quite light and durable, and when it comes off it does not fly far and cannot cause injury.

Of course, you can use a fishing line in the trimmer instead of the standard line, but this will add extra trouble to you, since it wears out quickly, breaks, mows slowly and is not suitable for cutting tough grass. In addition, during work, a lot of time is wasted to replace a broken tool more than once.

In practice, the installation of a regular line is justified if the user is going to mow the grass near the fence, especially if he is from the netting. In this case, in order to protect the standard and sometimes expensive line from wear and tear, it is changed to fishing line, which is not a pity. Usually, in order to change the line to line, it must be selected with the greatest thickness. 2-3 mm.

Trimmer head types

The grass mowing head is a cylindrical body in which a spool (bobbin) is inserted with a fishing line (cord) tucked in it. This design can be installed on both gasoline and electric trimmers. The heads differ in the way of threading and feeding the cord and there are 3 types.

  • Automatic. Cord feed is performed after the user reduces engine speed. Although the automatic line feed is convenient if a large amount of work is being done, such bobbins have one drawback. a high thread consumption.
  • Semi-automatic. The use of this type of heads does not require the user to perform complex manipulations. The principle of their operation is designed in such a way that the cord lengthens automatically while the apparatus is operating at full speed. It is enough to lightly knock the trimmer head against the ground (this removes the blocking of the cord), and the line is pulled out of the bobbin due to centrifugal force, and then it is cut to the required length with a knife located on the protective cover.
  • Manual. To lengthen the cord, the device must be stopped, after which the line is pulled manually.

Based on the above, semi-automatic bobbins are the best option. It should also be borne in mind that trimmer spools are single-string (used only for trimming grass) and two-string, which are used for mowing tall grass and small, thin-stemmed bushes.

Second way

Some spools provide a second method of securing the cord: you can charge 2 pieces of thread instead of one folded in half. The line is replaced according to the following algorithm.

  • Before changing or loading a new thread into the spool, determine how many meters it will take using the method described above.
  • Bend one end of the cord into a hook.
  • Find the hole in the bottom of the bobbin for the line to be fixed, and insert the looped end of the thread into it.
  • It is required to wind the cord according to the direction of the arrow to the required level not exceeding the spool diameter.
  • Do the same for the second bobbin compartment.
  • The assembly of the head is no different from the method that was given when threading the bobbin with a half-folded piece of fishing line was considered.

For Shtil brushcutters there is a very simple and quick way to change the line without disassembling the mowing head, which you can familiarize yourself with by watching this video.

The ends of the cord protruding from the holes in the casing can be cut to the required length after the part is installed in the trimmer. This can be done in two ways:

  • turning on the trimmer (when rotating, the ends of the fishing line will be cut off against the knife fixed for this purpose on the protective casing);
  • cutting off the excess ends with scissors so that they do not touch the casing body.

The second method is used if it was necessary to supply a large diameter cord, and the edging knife cannot shorten it.

If the filament has been loaded into the mowing head, but the length of the protruding ends of the cord is not enough, then they must be lengthened before starting the machine. this applies to the head with manual adjustment. However, there are cases when using a semi-automatic mowing head when, due to the insufficient length of the protruding ends of the cord, they do not automatically lengthen. In this case, it is necessary to turn off the unit (on an electrical device, it is necessary to unplug the plug from the socket), manually press the button located at the bottom of the part, and pull out a little line. After this procedure, the cord can again be extended due to centrifugal force if you set the maximum spindle speed.

Regardless of the thickness of the line you set, you should remember: in order not to constantly interrupt work and not change the line, you should avoid areas where the working tool can touch hard surfaces (stones, curbs, thick dry branches, etc.).

Option

To remove the trimmer head, you will need to completely disassemble it.

  • To remove the cover that covers the inside of the head, you must press on the latches (latches) located on both sides.
  • Removing the cover reveals a spool that needs to be removed from the case. Some spools have a spring under the bobbin, which must be carefully pulled out so as not to lose it in the grass.
  • When you remove the bobbin, you will see a slotted screw for a Phillips or flathead screwdriver in the center of the case. It is possible that there may be a hex bolt or an “asterisk” bit.
  • Using a screwdriver, selecting the required bit (nozzle), you need to unscrew the bolt (counterclockwise).
  • After removing the fasteners, grasp the body of the part and, shaking it in different directions, remove it from the gearbox shaft.

No cord feed, coil does not spin

An automatic or semi-automatic head should feed the line without stopping the unit. But if it does not come out, then the reasons may be as follows:

  • the fishing line is incorrectly wound in the reel, due to which the latter does not spin;
  • the cord is wound unevenly, and the thread can get stuck between the turns (the thread should be wound neatly, turn to turn, without distortions);
  • too short ends of the thread come out of the holes, as a result of which there is not enough centrifugal force to extract them, and the fishing line is not fed (it is recommended to always adjust the length of the cord before starting the unit, pulling it slightly);
  • the line is stuck together (will be discussed later).

Removing the coil from the trimmer

On small electric bottom motor trimmers (when operating near the ground), the reel usually has two buttons on the sides. Click on them and disconnect one half of the coil body from the second, which remains on the trimmer. Together with the first half, the inner part is also taken out, on which the fishing line is directly wound. When parsing, be careful: there is a spring inside that can fly out and get lost.

On electric and gasoline trimmers with a curved bar (there is still no way to put a knife on such trimmers), you need to wrap the coil body itself with one hand, and with the other hand you need to start rotating the lamb on it counterclockwise. It is he who attaches the coil to the trimmer bar. Having unscrewed the lamb, carefully remove the entire coil, trying not to lose the spring inside.

On electric and gasoline trimmers with a straight bar and a gearbox at its end (on such trimmers, in addition to fishing line, you can also install a knife), we look for a hole under the coil, insert, for example, a screwdriver into it, quietly rotate the coil until the screwdriver crawls even deeper, and the coil will lock. Now we turn the whole coil clockwise (since the thread is left-hand) and remove it from the trimmer. Then we disassemble the coil. It can be assembled with latches or twisted with a lamb. If the coil is on snaps, then press on the sides on the base of the snaps so that they bend and release one half of the coil body from the other. We just unscrew the lamb. There may also be a third type of connection of two halves of such a coil: with it, you need to grab the lower part with one hand, and the upper part with the other, and start turning them in opposite directions. When disassembling such a coil, you also need to make sure that the spring inside is not lost.

How to wind the line correctly on the trimmer spool

Many, having worked out the factory line on a recently purchased trimmer, try to wind a new one, but cannot, because they do not know how to properly wind the line on the spool (bobbin) of the trimmer. It seems that there is an instruction, but it still does not work. Let’s try in this article to deal with this issue.

So, in order to wind the line, you first need to remove the coil from the trimmer. this will be more convenient. The removal method will depend on the type of trimmer.

than 200 types of trimmers in one place at the lowest prices. Click and watch

Now, having removed and disassembled the coil, we proceed, in fact, to winding.

Winding process

If your coil is designed to work with only one tendril, then it’s simple. You need to unwind 2-4 m of fishing line (depending on the size of the reel), find a fixing hole for the line on the inside of the reel, insert one end of the line there and start winding the line in the direction opposite to the direction of rotation of the reel on the trimmer. On the inside of the reel, they usually indicate with an arrow in which direction to wind the line. Having reeled the fishing line, we leave a small piece of it unwound in order to expose it outside. We fix this piece in a special groove located on the inner part of the reel and designed so that the line does not unwind at the time of collecting the reel. If there is no such groove, then you will have to hold the fishing line with your finger to prevent it from unwinding during the further collection of the coil. Next, we take the outer part of the coil and thread the outer piece of fishing line into the existing hole, assemble and put the coil back on the trimmer.

If the coil is designed to work with two antennae, then do the following. On the inside of the reel, we look at how many grooves there are for winding the fishing line. There may be one or two of them. If there is only one groove, then both antennae are wound along this one groove. If there are two grooves, then each antenna is wound along its own groove. A reel with one groove should have a through hole through which the line is threaded. We unwind 2-4 m of fishing line, thread it through this hole so that it sticks out equally on each side of the fishing line. And we simultaneously wind both antennae of the fishing line in the same direction, opposite to the direction of rotation of the coil on the trimmer and coinciding with the direction indicated by the arrow on the inside of the coil. We leave a little of the fishing line unwound, fix the resulting ends in special grooves, and if they are not there, we hold them with our fingers. We pass both ends into the existing holes on the outer casing of the coil. Assembling the coil and attaching it to the trimmer.

If there are two grooves, fold a piece of fishing line 2-4 m long in half, insert the loop obtained at the place of the fold into the groove between the two grooves, and simultaneously wind both ends of the fishing line along its own groove. Further actions are similar to the previous option.

There are also reels in which the fishing line is threaded through a through hole on the inside. After that, the ends of the line, without winding, are threaded completely through the holes on the outer body of the reel, collect the reel and begin to rotate the button, which is usually pressed, in order to release the line during operation as it wears out. Rotate the button. the fishing line itself is wound inside. At the same time, it will not work to turn it in the “wrong” direction, since it can only rotate in one direction. If you get used to it, you can wind fishing line on such a reel without even disassembling it. you just need to combine the through hole of the inner drum with the holes on the outer body of the reel, and then thread the line through them.

That’s all on this issue. Happy winding!

Review: Trimmer Hammer ETR 1300. Powerful, comfortable, but dead after 2 years of work.

Good afternoon friends. My Hammer ETR1000 trimmer, which has served me faithfully for seven years, has asked for retirement. the truth is, I once visited the repair, but these are already parts, and his own coil very quickly came out of his standing, but this refers to consumables. I changed it to a Husqvarna T2S reel with M10 thread.
Since the Hammer brand has proven itself well in my eyes, I began to look for a new trimmer of the same company, but not with a straight bar, but with a bent one, since this option seemed to me more convenient to use. The difference for the layman is that a knife can be installed on a straight bar instead of a fishing line, but it is not installed on a bent one. But I somehow unscrewed this knife while mowing and stuck into the ground a few centimeters from my leg, after which I decided not to use it.
And so I decided to look for something that weighs less. My old ETR1000 weighed seven and a half kilograms, which is a bit too much by modern standards.
My choice was the Hammer ETR1300. Briefly its parameters:

As a result, I got a little more power and number of revolutions and a weight of three kilograms less.
Let’s get down to business that we have: The box is quite compact, due to the fact that the bar is collapsible and disassembled into two parts.

Everything inside is neatly folded and wrapped in plastic.

On the side there is very useful parameter information and even more useful information for more observant users.

Here is the gearbox itself from which all the oil leaked.

To pump the grease, you just need to unscrew this screw with a hexagon and pump the grease with a syringe.

Clamping sleeve for connecting rod parts. Everything is simple and standard here. But there is also a hole for pumping solid oil.

The rod is assembled very simply: we insert one end of the rod into the coupling, catch the moment when the ball is fixed in the hole and tighten the plastic screw.

The connection of the rod to the motor, as always with Hammer, and with most other manufacturers, is held by two self-tapping screws. Apparently, there will soon be a trip to the service to install the clamp in the place of the loosened screws.

The protective cover is very minimalistic, but still it should protect the lawnmower from small objects flying in the face from the fishing line.

A knife is attached to it for cutting excess fishing line on two self-tapping screws.

Also included is a two-piece handle, which must be fixed to the bar.

And a simple belt, but I didn’t use it on the old trimmer either, except that it rubs my shoulder from it to no use.

And also comes a set of necessary screws and a wrench. I want to note that there are no hex keys in the kit, and at least two types of them are required, but this is not critical. I think that every man at home has them.

And of course, the kit includes the main character, this is a reel with fishing line, but about it a little later.

The coil is simply screwed onto the gearbox without auxiliary tools.

The wire is short, but you don’t need more.

There is a dedicated cable grip on the motor housing, but this is standard on most trimmers.

This is how the trimmer looks when assembled.

Well, the bundle is over.
Now I want to take a closer look at the main character: the coil.
It is a consumable item, as the sellers explained to me in response to the question “Why is it so clumsily made?”

Her plastic is uneven, covered with burrs and kind of flimsy. To feed the line, you need to press the upper ledge with your hands and pull out the required amount of line. Or, while working, lightly hit them on the ground and then about five centimeters of fishing line will stick out.

At the bottom, a nut is recessed into the plastic, which is screwed onto the gearbox shaft.

Judging by the instructions, the coil can be disassembled and filled with fishing line elementary.

But on paper, everything is smooth, but in reality everything is much more complicated.
To begin with, it is very difficult to open it. The top cover must be turned counterclockwise so that it comes out of the grooves. She actively resists, but as soon as this happened a strong spring throws the entire structure out of the reel bowl.

Now you need to wind the line around the spool. The line folds in half, clings to the notch in the center of the spool and winds clockwise.

Then you need to insert the washer and the spring into place, get the ends of the line into the holes, hold the spool and the protruding ends of the line with effort, and at the same time try to put on and turn the cover in the grooves. A smart enough octopus will do this easily, but when there are only two hands, the task becomes more difficult. In addition, the lid bends and does not want to climb into the grooves.

And often this is the picture. But with experience she disappears.

I checked how it turns on. It turned out to be more comfortable than my old trimmer. You need to slide the safety key from above with your thumb and hold down the long start key with the rest of your fingers. On my old trimmer, the button was much smaller and more rigid, but here it is fifteen centimeters long.

I would also like to note the smooth start of the motor, it reaches maximum speed in about two seconds. This is done so that in case of an unauthorized launch, having received the first weak blow with a fishing line, you could have time to pull back the limb.

After mowing for two minutes, I noticed some small orange pieces of plastic in the grass. He turned off the trimmer and began to examine him. It turned out that the line, despite the installed knife-limiter, broke the protective cover on both sides. This is the quality of Chinese plastic!

And this is how the casing now looks from the other side.

The grass is periodically wound around the gearbox shaft. Have to stop and clean every ten minutes.

I mowed for about half an hour with short breaks, during this time the trimmer did not heat up, the line never had to be lengthened. His balancing was done very well, he mowed with his back straight, without bending as before. Despite the small size of the casing, it fulfills its function. This is what safety glasses look like after work, almost clean.

So, I want to summarize.
For starters, my experience: I have used the Hammer ETR1000, Viking EP 1000, and several low-powered Bocshs for a long time. There is even a full-fledged lawn mower, but I only use it when I want to listen to neighbors’ teeth grinding, as it is not convenient to use it on a not very large and not very flat garden plot 🙂
First, about the advantages of this model:
1. Good power and engine speed.
I accidentally hooked a line on an old rusty barrel into which rainwater was pouring from the roof. Now I have no barrels. Believe it or not, I cut the line in several places.!

Due to the bent bar, the trimmer is more convenient to use, since the back does not get numb.
3. Thanks to the folding bar, the trimmer takes up almost half the space.
4. Convenient long key to start the engine. The hand gets a little tired after long work, but it’s still better than a trigger button.
5. Smooth engine start increases safety during use.
6. Weight 4.5 kg. This is the lightest 1000 watt trimmer I have ever used.

Now the cons:
1. Poor quality and ill-conceived location of the protective cover. It practically went out of order after the first five minutes of work.
2. Poor coil quality. And with the replacement, difficulties may still arise. Of the suitable ones, I have so far found only Hitachi for 900 rubles, and this is already chaos, provided that you can pick up the coil for other trimmers for 300-400 rubles, but I do not despair. seeking.
3. Long shaft between reel and gearbox, on which grass is often wound. Long grass has to be mowed in two passes, first the tops, then the lower.
4. Lack of factory lubrication, and repair with replacement of parts in our service is often more expensive than buying new equipment.

What a short summer it was in St. Petersburg, only two sunny days. But I spent them at the dacha. I just managed to put the plot in order without rain.

He died in the summer of 2019. Strong smoke came from the engine.
