I Have Plywood At Home

Plywood is a convenient material for home decoration and furniture manufacturing, built-in and cabinet. But when working with plywood, there is one problem, when sawing, the edge is obtained with grooves, especially if the bottom layer of veneer goes across the path of the saw. Usually acceptable quality is achieved using a special saw, for example for sawing a laminate. But even in this case, the edge needs to be additionally trimmed with an electric jointer.

All the same applies to the cutting of laminate sheets, chipboard. Since the 90s, the laminate has been sawed by sticking scotch tape or masking tape on a marking line. This gives a certain effect, but still does not guarantee quality. I had to cut with a margin, and then cut the edges in size. For some works, for example, to make furniture doors, small chips are not so important, the edges are hidden during assembly in the binding grooves. But this does not always happen.

There is another way of sawing on a regular circular. The saw is set in height to half the thickness of the material, for a laminate 8-9 mm. We saw the part along the guide, then turn it over and pass on the other side. When using a good special saw, the quality is satisfactory.

On special cutting machines, this issue is solved by installing another circular saw in front of the saw. The cutting saw rotates in the opposite direction from the main side, that is, in the direction of movement of the material. In addition, the cutting saw is set to a slight height, about 1-3 mm. In this case, the circular saw no longer cleaves the lower layer of the workpiece.

This professional way of cutting sheets of plywood or laminate can also be used on a regular circular saw with a variable saw height. The principle of operation consists of two sequential operations:

1. We expose the saw to a height of 1-1.5 mm. from the table level. We pass the part on the back of the circular. Using this technology, it’s impossible to pass the part “by eye”; you need to use a guide ruler or a carriage with emphasis.

2. In the same position, saw the part already as it should, against the stroke of the saw.

Before you try to use this method of sawing, you need to think about security. Sawing along the saw can be risky, especially if you raise the saw high. Therefore, the depth of the first sawing is only the thickness of one layer of veneer.

In the photo you see the use of a moving platform on the circular. This carriage is homemade, on casters. I use a similar prefix for trimming wide parts. You can cut it at any angles, just fasten the thrust bars at 90, 45, or 30 to the platform and go through the workpieces. True, I have a platform without rollers, there is no time to do everything, and maybe time is AL-KO. We are used to dragging everything on the "navel", so we live.

We saw plywood on a circular saw.

On the video from YouTube, the principle of work is clearly visible, it remains only to turn on your wit and do something like that. The only drawback of this method is that it is difficult to work with large sheets, and it is quite possible to customize the details.
