Insulated And Heated Dog House
Friends, today we have an unexpected, but very interesting topic related to our smaller brothers. At first glance, film electric heaters and the type of activity of our company engaged in heating systems, has no direct relation to dogs. But this is not the case, as can be seen by reading this article, prepared for our visitors. For example, is it possible to put a film in a doghouse, so that it is warm there. Of course yes! And today we will just talk about how to do it correctly and effectively.
Questions about how to insulate a dog house, quite natural and logical. Almost daily they are asked to our specialists. However, before you spend heating in a dog house, you should take care of its warming. Therefore, we share with you the real experience of our employee. Meet this cute dog name is Pepsi!
She in the summer of 2014 nailed to the garage, temporarily replacing the outbuilding on the dacha. Then there were no more buildings in the field.
The dog was very thin, constantly whining. We sheltered her and named Pepsi. The dog was young, only 7-8 months old, and very quickly recovered, having found his home, became very lively and cheerful.
She spent the summer hiding from the heat from the garage, and she felt quite comfortable. And by the fall, we made a booth for our favorite. It looks very ordinary, but well-insulated from the inside.
Used for insulation penoplex 50 mm thick. It not only differs in the minimum heat conductivity, but also is not afraid of dampness and hit of water on a surface.
We warmed the walls and ceiling around the inside, and the floor outside. At the entrance, they attached a regular rug that protected Pepsi from direct drafts (for this purpose, you can also use ordinary tarpaulin). All the slots of the insulated dog house were filled with foam inside and out, so it turned out to be very warm. We visited Pepsi every day and she felt absolutely comfortable even in the harsh Ural winter. Pepsi warmed herself! Her own heat was enough to create the optimum temperature inside the booth (by the way, the normal body temperature in dogs is 38.5-39 ° C).
We did not measure the real temperature of the air that was in the booth. But when outside it was -30 Celsius, it was possible to warm hands inside! This effect was achieved thanks to the excellent thermal insulation with the use of 50 mm thick foam foam. Wherein Insulated dog house stood in an open field in the middle of the field – there were no fences or other shelters from the wind, only a garage 2 meters away.
It was here, in her warm, comfortable booth, that Pepsi was puffed up for the first time, bringing three large “Chipmunks”.
And for two winter months with severe frost they practically did not leave the booth, which is quite understandable – it was dry and very warm there. After the puppies grew up, we gave them away in good hands, and they still delight their owners.
By the way, we want to take this opportunity to thank all the people who were not indifferent to the fate of Pepsi and puppies. Every day someone fed them, as a result, puppies grew up healthy and cheerful. Thank you so much.!
Pros and cons of the insulated dog house
But back to our topic and see what happened to our booth during the winter season, analyze all its pros and cons. The first thing we noticed: it turned out to be a good “thermos”, the heat losses of which turned out to be minimal. And these insignificant losses excellently filled the dog with the warmth of its body (well, puppies helped a little bit).
Then no one thought about installing heating in a dog house. Moreover, they did it in the autumn in relative haste, therefore, they did not even sheathe Penoplex from the inside. To do this, you could use anything you want: plywood, boards, osb or mdf plates, other materials. And that’s what happened as a result.
We see that the insulation in places of intensive contact and constant friction of animals has crumbled. And the puppies did their bit when they bit off or scratched the pieces in the process of their games. Therefore, to ensure durability, even such a dense insulation as penoplex, it is desirable to hide from dog claws and teeth. And in those places where the contact of dogs with the material was absent or was minimal (for example, on the ceiling), the penoplex looks like new.
But in the summer we learned that our wonderful booth has a significant disadvantage. This summer, Pepsi was puzzled again. And there were already six beautiful puppies in this litter.
The sultry heat turned the warm booth into a real sauna. After all, it, in addition to the entrance, turned out to be absolutely airtight, did not even have gaps for the inflow of fresh air. The situation was saved by the fact that the construction of the booth provided for a roof that could be lifted. This made it possible to create a small draft, but it was still hot enough for the whole summer.
The conclusion suggests itself that when designing an all-season booth, it is necessary to provide a removable insulation. The same penoplex can be removed from the walls, and for ventilation to raise the roof. As an option, you can make a booth in an aviary or a booth with an open, unheated veranda and a roof for your pets (as in the image below).
Such a booth will perfectly protect from the sun and provide a draft.
In our case, too, everything ended well. Puppies, like Pepsi, escaped from the heat in the cool under the garage, almost without going into the booth. They have grown well and today all six fell into the good hands of the new owners.
How to make a warmed dog house with your own hands
Once again we focus your attention on the fact that for a healthy dog in the winter, you only need to insulate the booth well, to replace all the gaps and joints. This will reduce heat losses so much that the dog will have enough heat of its own body for heating, that is, it will heat itself. Additional heating dog kennels in most cases not required. For those who consider it insufficient, who wants to protect their pets from extreme cold by 200%, there is an excellent solution. These are film electric heaters.
For a doghouse you can use two types of materials, as we have seen. They, besides reliability and other advantages, have suitable standard sizes. This is a heating film TM (has a cutting step of 0.25 m) and ZEBRA EVO-300 (cutting step 0.6 m). Since the principle of operation of heaters is the same, the choice of a specific material should be made, focusing, first of all, on the parameters of your booth. It is necessary to put the film on the ceiling, if possible covering the material with 70-90% of the ceiling.
Again note, that the installation of film electric heaters will be justified only in the case when the booth is properly insulated around. For this, the same 50 mm foam block will be suitable, which we used, plus at the entrance you need to secure the curtain from direct drafts (it may be a piece of tarpaulin, floor mat, etc.).
For example, let’s consider a heated dog booth with dimensions of 0.6 meters in width, 0.9 meters in length and height of 0.7 meters. To install the heating we need:
TM heating film with dimensions of 0.5 x 0.75 m – 1 pc.
Thermostat RTC 70.26 – 1 pc.
Differential automat 2P, 10 A, 30 mA – 1 pc.
Wire VVGng 2 x 1.5 sq. Mm required length.
OV-2 connectors – 2 pcs.
A piece of cable channel 25 x 25 mm, length 0.55 m.
Modular box for installation of equipment – 1 pc.
Finishing decor to close the film on the ceiling (drywall, osb plate, board, any other decor no more than 12 mm thick). It should be closed at a distance of 2.5 to 5 cm from the film heater.
The modular box and all protective and control equipment should be installed in a separate room, which is located next to the booth. For these purposes, any building or structure that supplies electricity is suitable: a residential house, a garage, a summer kitchen, a bath, etc. After installing the modular box, it is necessary to lead from it to the booth wires (phase, zero 220 V) and a separate wire for the remote sensor that comes from the thermostat.
note, that the wire for the remote sensor thermostat has a length of only 3 meters. It is possible to increase its length without losing the functionality of the device independently, but only up to 10 meters. For this suitable wire SHVVP 2 x 0.75 sq. Mm. Most likely, when increasing the length of the wire, the calibration will fail, that is, the real temperature readings measured by the sensor will not exactly match the scale of the thermostat. But this is not a problem, because with the help of a regulator you can always set the temperature a little more or less, choosing empirically the most comfortable parameters for your pet.
The differential circuit will provide effective protection of the network against short-circuit currents and against the electric shock of the dog. Below is an exemplary diagram of the connection of the heating system of a dog kennel based on the TM heating film.

Install a modular box or thermostat directly on the booth or inside the booth we do not recommend. A dog may accidentally open or break equipment, touch energized contacts. Therefore, all protective and control equipment must be located outside the pet’s access area. The film on the ceiling will be covered with a decorative decor, and for the remote sensor it is necessary to provide a protective casing or a box with holes to correctly measure the air temperature. More than 10-12 degrees to set the temperature should not be.
Why not install the film on the floor or walls? The answer to this frequent question is quite simple. Your dog will be at least uncomfortable, because the natural thermoregulation of the animal is disturbed. And the dog will avoid such a booth, and you should not experiment with the pet’s health. The only correct solution is film heaters placed on the ceiling. Between the dog and the film will be the optimal distance (10-30 cm) and there will be no direct contact, and such a system will help to warm the pet effectively and not harm it.
