Oil and gasoline ratio for chainsaw

Why you need to dilute the lubricant

At the very beginning, it is necessary to understand the reason for diluting the fuel. The mixture used for the chainsaw is diluted primarily to prolong the life of its owner. The instructions for it strictly forbids the operation without petrol dilution.

The chainsaw engine is based on a reciprocating internal combustion engine. It consists only of a cylinder, so it has no additional systems for lubricating parts. The mixture enters it, settles in, and lubricates the piston rings and walls. With tools like chain saws, oil and gasoline are the only lubricating fluids in the world. The mixture extends the working life of all components.

It also contains additives that are good for the engine. It has antioxidant, preservative and other properties, which are also useful for the engine and its parts.

How a chainsaw is built?

In order to understand properly why gasoline for chainsaws is diluted with oil, it is necessary to understand the machine itself.

First of all, the chainsaw is powered by a two-stroke engine. That is, in fact, the device is extremely simple in nature. an internal combustion engine and gasoline. However, as a tool, the chainsaw is truly indispensable. Beside the engine, the chain saw consists of the ignition system, fuel system, clutch, carburettor, air filtration system, starter motor, chain, guide bar, chain brake, tensioning mechanism and chain lubrication system.

For optimum performance, regular lubrication of the parts is essential. This will improve both its performance and durability. You should not mess with the health of your chainsaw as it is one of the most dangerous tools in the world.

So, with the device and the need for lubrication of parts of the chainsaw we have understood, now we can move on to the specifics. For maximum efficiency, it is important to use the proper lubricant. We help you choose.

STIHL chain saw

STIHL chain saws are offered with unleaded AI-92 or AI-95 gasoline. In addition, the company also produces fuel oils for its tools. If you have purchased a STIHL chain saw, how do you dilute the gasoline with oil?? The enclosed instruction recommends using 1:50 mixture of petrol and oil. This means adding 20 ml of STIHL oil to every liter of gasoline, preferably.

Do not break the ratio, it will cause malfunctions in the tool. Often, the manufacturer also provides a special canister with marked divisions and two holes for filling the necessary ingredients for mixing.

It is necessary to dilute petrol with oil to avoid failure of an internal combustion engine. The reason for this is the design features of the lubrication system of two-stroke engines. These engines have no engine oil chamber, and if fuel is filled without lubricant, the crankshaft, piston, bearings, and connecting rods will not be lubricated. This will significantly reduce the life of all of these parts, so do not pour pure fuel.

Gasoline and chain saw oil need to be poured in the proper proportions to allow for effective lubrication of the rubbing parts. Lack of lubricant or its excess will lead to negative consequences in the form of fouling. To keep the tool in good working order, it is necessary not only to fill it up with high-quality materials from the first day of operation, but also to observe the correct proportions.

Important to know! The two-stroke engine requires gasoline with an octane rating of at least 92. Many experts say that Russian or Ukrainian fuel can be poured only with an octane number not lower than 95, which is associated with its low quality.

To keep the engine in good working order the main thing is to fill it with clean fuel without any impurities.

Preparation of fuel mixture: proportion of oil and gasoline for chainsaws

The chainsaw engine is the heart of the machine and it is therefore important to use a well mixed fuel.

The fuel mixture for a chainsaw is made of two components. oil and gasoline. Chainsaws are equipped with a two-stroke engine, so oil is not added to the lubrication system (as in a four-stroke engine), but directly to the gasoline. It is very important to observe correct proportions of ingredients and, of course, in no case trying to work on pure gasoline, because that way you will very quickly “kill” the chainsaw.

The oil must always be intended for two-stroke engines used in forestry technology (i.e. never for outboard engines or scooters). As practice shows, you can buy such oil in any store or service center, where chainsaws are sold or serviced.

If we talk about what gasoline to fill a chainsaw, it would be optimal to use fuel with the octane number of A-95, in this case, the savings on fuel can turn out badly. European manufacturers often indicate that you can use gasoline A-90 or A-92, but in post-Soviet countries, the quality of gasoline is inferior to European, so in our realities it is better to use higher-quality gasoline.

As for the very proportion of gasoline-oil mixture, then everything is simple: you need to clearly follow the instructions of the tool. All chainsaw manufacturers indicate the necessary ratio in the instruction manual or in the tool passport, moreover, the proportions for filling the chainsaw may differ depending on the model of chain saw. as a rule, the ratio of oil to gasoline for a well-known chain saw manufacturer is 1:40 or 1:50, which means 1 part oil to, say, 40 parts gasoline.

Now the arithmetic: 1 liter of gasoline = 1000 ml of gasoline, divide by 40 and you get 25 ml of oil. If we perform the same actions to the ratio 1:50, we get 20 ml of oil for 1 liter of gasoline.

With low-priced Chinesawes made in China, the situation is a little different. Gasoline to oil ratio for chainsaw made in China 1:25, that is 1000 ml of petrol divided by 25, you get 40 ml of oil. The thing is that the branded chainsaws have a good assembly and the distance between the pistons and cylinders in the engine is much smaller than in the Chinese chainsaws, so the required amount of oil is almost twice as different.

for measuring a proper portion of oil, use ordinary medical syringe of proper volume.

Correct Way To Mix Gas and Oil For a ChainSaw, WeedEater etc.

Another subtlety. pour gasoline into a dry gasoline canister first, then the oil. The procedure on the contrary is fraught with low-quality fuel mixture, because the oil is denser and will stick to the bottom of the canister. That’s why there’s no way to talk about good blending.

Be sure to prepare the fuel mixture in the canister and fill the gas tank with already prepared special fuel! Never prepare and mix it directly in the gasoline tank of the chainsaw!

If the question of how to dilute gasoline for a gasoline chainsaw figured out, then and on the storage conditions and expiration date of the fuel mix a few words must be said. It is best and easiest to prepare gasoline-oil mixture for 1 liter of gasoline, it is recommended to do it just before working with the tool. Gasoline tanks in chainsaws have a capacity of 0.3 to 1 liter. Household use seldom uses the entire volume of the fuel mixture in one sitting, so the remainder can be saved until the next working session. It is necessary to store the fuel mix in a special canister for gasoline, in a dry dark place. It is optimal to calculate that shelf life of the ready mixture will be 7-10 days

The fact that the oil presented now on the market is not synthetic, and organic, that is natural. After 10 days all lubricating properties are lost, gasoline simply “eats up” the oil. Naturally, you can no longer use such fuel, it can cause a breakdown and failure of the chainsaw.

At the end of work it is necessary to drain the fuel mixture and start the chainsaw. the tool will stall (so that the saw has a dry carburetor) and now you can leave it until the next session of operation.

What you need to know?

Choosing the right mixture ratio for the fuel mass is not an easy task. It is necessary to calculate the proportions of mixing according to the established norm. Sometimes drivers add ingredients at their discretion. At the same time, disciplined vehicle owners who are concerned about the engine know that the recommended proportion is 1 to 50. That’s how much oil? The answer to this question is on the following pages.

There are some simple rules for mixing the ingredients. To dilute gasoline oil 1 to 50 it is recommended to use fuel grade A-92. Often use A-80, explaining such action by the presence in its composition of a large number of additives. This is fundamentally wrong.

Oil of almost any kind is suitable for mixing with fuel. The main thing is that it belongs to the auto group, and was not intended for tractors or motor boats. Such oil should not be used. Otherwise, it will obviously shorten the life of the engine.

Step by step instructions for filling

Wanting to fuel a chainsaw, you need to follow a simple algorithm:

  • Prepare fuel in the recommended proportion of gasoline and oil for two-stroke chainsaws.
  • Prepare your chainsaw for fueling by removing sawdust and shavings from the surface of the saw.
  • Place the saw on a flat, stable stand with the throat of the tank up.
  • Carefully place a small funnel (plastic or metal, resistant to fuels and lubricants, easy to buy a suitable one at an auto supply store) into the open throat of the tank
  • Carefully fill up the fuel tank, making sure not to overfill. It is unacceptable to fill under the cap. it will cause spillage when the cap is screwed on!
  • Close the fuel tank lid
  • Change the chain lubricant (required)!)
  • Try to run the engine at idle speed.

Features of chain saw

Every chainsaw has three basic elements that make it work. These include a 2-cylinder carburetor engine and two tanks. Pour the fuel mixture into one and the oil necessary for chain lubrication into the other. Fuel tank capacity of 0.25 l, to run for 4,555 minutes without interruption. The oil volume is about half of what it is. With this volume ratio, the contents of both tanks run out almost simultaneously.

STIHL 2-stroke engines do not use an oil pump system, and you have to add oil to the fuel mix to lubricate the shaft, piston and other working parts. Trying to use only one kind of gasoline, or failure to comply with the proportions of fuel and lubricant mixture of the two components, as mentioned in the instructions, can lead to tool failure.

Criteria for self-selection

A wide range allows you to choose the oil that fully meets the class and characteristics of a chainsaw, and the conditions of its subsequent operation.

  • For budget models it is possible to use oils of Standard category, for professional chainsaws we recommend consumable lubricants of Super and Ultra categories.
  • To make a complete fuel mix for your chain saw it is advisable to use brand-name oils or brand-name equivalents as recommended in the instruction manual. In particular, STIHL and Husqvarna motor oils of the same composition and application are fully interchangeable.

Experts recommend that owners of chainsaws exclude from their attention motor oils designed for two-stroke engines of mopeds, boat motors and other mechanized appliances of the household group.

The power units of this equipment operate in a more comfortable environment, making their performance requirements less stringent.
