Orbital sander for bodywork

Choosing a grinder: what they are and what they are used for?

orbital, sander, bodywork

Sanding is one of the types of bodywork. Given the large surface area of the body, it is ineffective to perform them manually, therefore, labor automation is required. This article discusses how to choose a sander.

Professional tool

The main difference between the named types is that the first grinders are designed for long, continuous operation in difficult conditions. Their high reliability and endurance are due to the fact that high quality materials are used in the production of such models. In addition, they are characterized by high power. This leads to a large mass and high cost of such tools. Professional sander parts include rollers, abrasive belts and attachments, bushings, undercarriages and more.

What to consider when choosing?

You also need to consider not only how much the tool itself costs, but also the cost of components and spare parts for grinders. The price of the content includes abrasive elements, such as sandpaper for a sander. Such equipment uses a flat machine, other options require discs, brushes.

Brush

The name of this type of grinder is due to the fact that the abrasive element is represented by a metal brush. There are small, straight, single-handed options, as well as larger belt-like models with two metal brush rollers. They are convenient to use as a glass grinder.

Direct

Such tools are used to carry out small jobs that require high precision. For example, they perform grinding of small surfaces such as lintels and strips, as well as edges and corners. In addition, using specialized attachments, which are equipped with most of the grinders of this type, it is possible to cut various materials of small thickness and apply engraving.

Many straight grinders are lightweight and designed to be held with one hand. Another important design feature of this type of tools is the location of the spindle parallel to the body.

Classification

There are several types of grinders distinguished based on the design.

Tape

The main purpose of such tools is the primary treatment of large surfaces. So, with their use, coarse grinding, leveling, roughing, removal of paint and varnish are carried out. Belt sanders are most in demand by professionals, although there are also household options.

The abrasive working element of this type of grinding machine is represented by an emery paper tape glued into a ring. Most of the tools are fitted with a belt width of 40-120 mm, although there are options with a width of less than 40 mm, designed for machining difficult surfaces. In any case, the working element rotates on two end rollers. You can learn more about the principle of operation of such tools from the video. Outwardly, they resemble an electric plane.

The large, flat working surface of the belt sander ensures maximum productivity. However, the quality of work is not high.

The main parameters of such devices are the speed of the belt, the presence of a dust collector and a soft start system.

Orbital Sanders

Eccentric sanders are considered the most efficient and versatile tool for polishing and sanding surfaces. In industrial production and in private use, they show the best result in the quality of surface treatment.

Polishing and sanding is possible thanks to a combination of rotational and eccentric movements of the sole. The sole rotates in an orbit and simultaneously rolls around its axis. Such complex movement of the abrasive allows for efficient grinding with a minimum of imperfections.

The machine weighing from 1 to 3 kg is equipped with a round sole with Velcro, to which an abrasive wheel on a felt basis is attached. The soles come in two sizes. diameter: 125 and 150 mm. Machines with a 125 mm sole are lighter, designed for a smaller area and for more delicate work than sanders with a 150 mm sole. Electric motors consume from 200 to 900 W. more power provides more performance.
When installing the equipment, it is important that the holes on the sole of the grinder coincide with the holes of the abrasive wheel, otherwise the process of dust removal will be difficult.

They are used for coarse or delicate sanding on large surfaces, for interlayer processing of materials and coatings, for polishing, processing large surfaces along and across the fibers. Often this type of machine is used in carpentry and car painters. With the help of ESM, volumetric, profile and curved surfaces are processed. Working with an eccentric sander is unlikely to spoil the workpiece: grind, burn the material or overdo it with the grinding depth. The level of noise and vibration is lower than other types of grinders.

The disadvantages are obvious: eccentric machines are not suitable for processing interior corners and recesses. Low performance compared to belt sanders.

Belt Sanders

For belt sanders, the equipment, an abrasive belt glued in the form of an endless ring, moves in one direction along two end rollers, one is leading, the other rotates freely. Linear grinding and high speed of movement of the abrasive provides high productivity, but at the same time requires increased control over the grinding process. LShM weigh up to 7 kg, and the power of the electric motor varies from 500 to 1500 W.

The three main standards of belt sanders are distinguished by the length of the sanding belt: 457 mm, 533 mm, 610 mm.

Belt sanders are suitable for rough sanding of surfaces made of wood, metal, plastic, mineral building materials. Often used when removing old paint or varnish, leveling putty. Due to its high productivity, large quantities of material are quickly removed, and in combination with coarse grit, the belt sander can function as an electric planer. The quality of grinding is not the best indicator of this tool, often during processing cavities and scratches appear. Effective for sanding glued panels and processing convex parts. Models available with the ability to work upside down, stationary.

This tool is not suitable for delicate sanding and requires special control when working. It can leave indentations in the material and, due to the specifics of the sole, belt sanders do not grind in the corners. High noise levels and frequent clogging of the dust extractor are the disadvantages of this tool.

General features

  • Most modern grinders are equipped with a dust extraction system: a construction vacuum cleaner is connected through a special pipe or there is a dust collection bag in the kit. This makes the work process cleaner, the tool itself is better controlled, and the consumption of abrasive equipment is reduced.
  • By the type of power supply, the machines are divided into network and battery. The advantages and disadvantages of cordless sanders are obvious. mobility and independence from the mains, but the operating time is limited by the battery charge.

Choosing a grinder

To make a choice, you need to clearly understand the purpose of each type of grinder. At first glance, the principle of operation of grinding machines is the same. grinding the surface of the material using abrasive equipment. In any given task, one type of grinder will show itself brilliantly, while the other will not give the expected result. For example, eccentric machines cannot handle internal corners, but vibrating sanders can do it. Let’s analyze the types of grinders and determine the scope of each of them.

Delta Vibratory Grinders

A feature of this tool is a compact lightweight body. the weight of the tool is up to 1 kg; a delta-shaped sanding pad, which is why these machines are called “iron”. Electric motor power up to 300 W.
Grinding in hard-to-reach places is carried out due to the fact that the triangular sole makes fast vibrations with a small amplitude. Accessories (sanding sheets) for this tool are not sold everywhere and are more expensive than paper-based sanding belts or grinding wheels.

With the help of a delta sander, fine grinding of protrusions, blind corners, edges, profiles, removal of protruding glue, processing of objects with small parts and complex surfaces is performed.

Delta orbital sander. especially good for joinery, furniture, stairs, car body work, used as a basic tool as well as in addition to eccentric or orbital sanders.

Surface Grinders (Vibratory)

These machines have a mass of 1 to 3 kg, are equipped with a rectangular sole with a clamping mechanism along the edges, which fixes the sanding paper. There are models with the ability to fix the rig to the sole with Velcro.

The sole performs reciprocating movements in an annular orbit, due to this, grinding or polishing is carried out. The power of the electric motor of this tool is from 150 to 600 W. The sole is of two types: standard. 100 X 200 mm, and mini. miniature options with a base of about 100 X 100 mm.

The choice here is simple: mini surface grinders are suitable for narrow spaces, they are lighter and more maneuverable than standard.

Designed for delicate processing of large flat surfaces. They occupy an intermediate place in the cleanliness of processing parts between belt and eccentric ones. Using a surface grinder, they carry out finishing grinding of various surfaces: wood, plastic, stone.

Benefits: Ability to grind and polish inside corners, availability of consumables and reasonable cost of the grinder itself.

Disadvantages: high noise relative to orbital.

Electric file

There are special purpose belt sanders, the so-called belt files or electric files. Often used for deburring weld seams and sanding materials in hard-to-reach areas.
Only certain accessories are suitable for electric files, with a width of 9 to 30 mm.
Such belt sanders weigh much lighter than conventional ones. 1-2 kg.

What is a sander for??

During any construction and repair work, sooner or later, there is a need for surface grinding. Remove the old coating, prepare the surface of the walls for subsequent finishing, level the parquet or metal surface during welding. all these works require the use of grinders. In this article we will talk about what types of grinders are and for what work each type is used.

angle grinder, or angle grinder

Angle grinders (angle grinder) are the most commonly purchased type of this equipment. An angle grinder is needed for a large number of works performed both on a construction site and on a personal plot. Such versatility of this tool is explained by the large number of replaceable attachments:

circles for cutting various materials;

eccentric and emery bits.

With their help, you can cut, remove old paintwork, grind and polish metal and wood. Finishing work in the house, building a gazebo in the country and even making old pans and pots shine again. an angle grinder will help you to do all this.

Vibration grinders

This type of equipment, due to the ability to regulate the number of revolutions of the disk, can work with materials such as:

varnished or painted surfaces.

They are not often used in everyday life, but they are popular among professionals in the construction and repair business, tk. allow high-quality finishing of large surfaces (walls, floors). They also have additional functionality. the ability to connect to a vacuum cleaner to collect dust, which invariably forms when grinding any surface.

Eccentric (orbital) grinders

What is an eccentric sander for? It is used in cases where delicate, high-quality processing is required. Unlike other types, the working surface of the eccentric sander not only rotates but also oscillates. By replacing the emery cloth with another attachment with a softer material structure, you can make the surface absolutely smooth, add extra shine to it, for example, polish parquet or car coating after painting. But with shallow depressions or corners, such a machine will not cope, because the disc will not reach there.

Other types of grinders

Belt sanders are used for rough primary surface treatment, but this machine can leave marks from the belt (invoice).

Polishing grinders are most often used for bodywork in car services.

Delta sanders are capable of handling hard-to-reach places such as corners, fine thread details.

Straight grinders (drill) are used for processing (more often metal) in hard-to-reach places, they also allow you to work with small parts of various shapes. The working replaceable element of straight grinders are rotary cutters of various shapes.

On our website you can find a wide range of grinding machines of any modifications that suit you both in terms of cost and functionality.

ESM classes

Useful options

Meet the eccentric sanders

In a professional environment, this tool is called “orbital”. Why did joiners and body repairmen love him? Consider the principle of operation, classes and useful options for ESM.

On

  • Class “150 mm”. these ESM are relatively large in size, made according to a two-handed scheme (grip for the front and rear handles) and grind efficiently, as they are equipped with a 300-500 W motor.
  • The class “125 mm” is the most widespread, it contains different ESM. There are also enough compact, lightweight, relatively inexpensive cars. There are many one-handed models among them.

Combined ESM

The most productive. In layout, they strongly resemble an angle grinder and are equipped with a powerful motor.
The forced run function is the main advantage of the combined ESM. When it is turned on, the sole is set in rotation by a reducer. Thanks to this, the layer is peeled off at a very high speed. Such a tool is good not only for polishing, but also for quick rough grinding. Alas, there are not many similar machines on the market.

Principle of operation

Much in common with PSHM. Surface grinders and eccentric grinders are arranged according to the same scheme, they are similar in a set of characteristics, options and purpose. But you cannot put an equal sign between them. EShM is a more advanced alternative to a surface grinder.
Oscillation plus rotation. A distinctive feature of the eshm is a round sole, which not only vibrates (orbits due to the eccentric), but also rotates around its own axis. In fact, it resembles the movement of a planet.

Benefits of ESM

Grinding performance. It is greatly enhanced by the rotation of the sole. Some powerful models are even comparable to belt sanders in this regard.
Processing quality. It also increases, since the trajectory of movement of abrasive grains in the “double” stroke is not repeated.

Electric car sander advantage over pneumatic

  • significant, in comparison with pneumatic equipment, energy savings;
  • higher mobility, the power cable is more flexible than the pneumatic hose;
  • electronic assistants with information boards and the possibility of all kinds of precise adjustments.

All modern grinders are equipped with a dust extraction system by means of a vacuum cleaner, or in the case of a built-in dust extraction rotor, collection takes place in a special container or in a bag through a special hose.

An electric sander for a car can be simply orbital and orbital eccentric, i.e. the movement of the grinding plane occurs with an offset, which increases the productivity and service life of abrasive materials.

The incomparable advantage of electric grinders is the ability to use all kinds of useful options. In the top models, you can find the broadest possibility of adjusting the speed, an intelligent system against drawdowns and many other useful systems.

The sanding paper is fastened by means of special hooks on the sanding platform and a counterpart on the paper. Replacing the abrasive is simple and easy, at the same time, this type of attachment reliably fixes the abrasive material.

The modern design electric car sander has a brushless DC motor. Now such a device requires minimal maintenance, high reliability and in comparison with devices with brushes, and more and more displaces the bodywork tools for small and medium-duty industries on the market.

Orbital Sanders. this is one of the varieties of grinding technology.

Their purpose is high quality material processing. Although the performance of these handheld power tools is very high, they are rarely used for rough sanding and trowelling. Basically. for finishing and polishing on wood, metal and other hard surfaces. Most relevant in difficult, curved areas. View and select other grinders.

Application

The eccentric grinder is used:

For final polishing of any surface: metal, wood, plastic.

In carpentry workshops, for finishing workpieces and finished products (furniture, frames, stairs).

In car repair shops, for polishing cars before and after painting.

Working with complex, voluminous, curved objects.

The only place where this device will save is a corner and a shallow depression. The grinding disc will not reach such places. If many grooves need to be polished for tasks, try using a machine with a smaller disc, or use a brush tool. Its rig is narrow, penetrates the right places.

How an eccentric sander works

The design is similar to vibration surface grinders. Just like them, the eccentric sander has a housing in which an electric motor is hidden, there are convenient handles and control systems. Equipped with eccentric and counterweight. The structure is complicated by the fact that the torque from the engine is transmitted not only to the vibration mechanism, but also to the spindle. A round sole is attached to the spindle. A sanding pad is put on it. Thus, two types of movement are performed simultaneously:

  • Reciprocating (thanks to the vibrator). Transmitted from the motor by means of a belt drive.
  • Axial (due to the rotation of the shaft with the spindle). In some models, the axis rotates by inertia. expensive tools are equipped with a complex gear transmission. It is the most reliable and efficient design. It is more expensive in price, but allows you to get a perfect surface, without waves, grooves and scratches.

The disc pad fits snugly to the surface and grinds it, rotating and moving back and forth at the same time. Since the rotation is performed in a given orbit, such a machine is also called orbital. A fine-grained abrasive wheel is used. In models sold in Ukraine, one disc is usually included in the kit. Fastened with Velcro. It can be metallic and elastic. A metal plate is more durable, but flexible workpieces can be grinded with a complex configuration.

What features does an orbital sander have

The eccentric sander is always very convenient, compact and lightweight. The weight is 1-2 kg. You need to choose it based on the parameters:

Power. Optimum performance from 150 to 300 watts. For large-scale work, there are models of 500-750 W of power, they are capable of performing a rough cleaning when installing a coarse-grained nozzle.

Amplitude of vibrations. For household work, the indicator is in the range from 3 to 5 mm. For professional 6-7 mm. The larger the amplitude, the faster the device works, The same is the frequency characteristic.

RPM. For different models, it is in the range from 4 to 14 thousand per minute. It is important that high-revving devices have a speed control function. This will allow high-quality polishing of various materials.

Sole size. The minimum circle with a diameter of 100 m, the maximum. 150 mm. The larger the diameter, the higher the productivity. The permissible diameter is directly related to the motor power.

Additional options for increased comfort:

Adjustable front handle. For convenience, it should have rubber inserts. Stopper fixing the start key.

Functional dust extraction. (Some models have a special dust bag, others have an adapter for connecting a vacuum cleaner).

Additional handle. For large volumes of work. Should be easy to remove.

Vibration damper. Then the vibration is minimal. You can work for a long time without getting tired.

Detachable power cord (easy to store).

Principle of operation

The sole of the eccentric sander simultaneously performs two types of movement: rotational and reciprocating. If the rotary movement allows for fine grinding without scratches, then the additional movement makes the work more productive and high-quality.

Orbital sanders are a versatile tool for cleaning, grinding, polishing wood and metal surfaces. They can also handle plastic, glass, stone, putty and varnished surfaces. Eccentric sanders have the widest range of applications, but unlike other sanders, they are especially good at machining curved surfaces. In addition, they give a high finishing speed.

Device

The eccentric grinders have a circular platform. a support plate. Replaceable sanding sheets are attached to the support plate, which are made of corundum, felt, fleece, sponge, fur.

There are two ways to attach sanding sheets:

  • The clamp is the most economical, the machines themselves and their consumables are cheaper.
  • Velcro. quick and easy sheet change.

For dust extraction, the eccentric sander can be equipped with a dust extraction unit via the soleplate or a device for connecting an external vacuum cleaner.

Specifications

  • Power. Orbital sanders are available in different power ratings from 150W to 1000W. For cleaning and rough grinding, it is better to choose eccentric sanders with a power of 400 watts or more. The highest power (2100 W) is the wet sander.
  • Disc diameter. One size fits all. 125 mm. Ideal for fine grinding as they have an optimal vibration amplitude. There are models with smaller (80mm) and larger diameters. It should be borne in mind that machines with a large plate diameter are heavier, and therefore less convenient to work with.
  • Speed. Determines the performance of the tool. For convenient operation, there are soft start systems and a gradual set of speed, which are equipped with some models. The presence of a speed controller allows you to get the best processing results.
