Removing adhesive tapes

Another problem that bodybuilders face is removing adhesive tapes from the surface (those to which moldings and emblems are attached).

If earlier they were removed by manual scraping, spending a lot of time and nerves on this, now they can be removed in a matter of minutes using special rubber circles.

It is advisable to work at a speed of 2000-4000. Too high revolutions and strong pressure of the sander can lead to overheating of the paintwork.

Removing thick layers of paintwork

An invariable tool when working on surfaces with large damage (for example, after straightening), as well as on surfaces that have previously been repaired and have thick layers of old repair materials on them, is an angle grinder, popularly referred to as an “angle grinder”.

For example, the Rodcraft 7150 pneumatic angle grinder or the Festool RAS 115.04 E electric rotary grinder.

Of the materials for this task, fiber discs are most often used: ordinary or with Velcro fastening. Sia has siamet and siatop circles, respectively. These are very aggressive materials, so they can easily cope with the removal of thick layers of paintwork. However, these materials should be used carefully so as not to leave too rough marks on the metal surface. After working with coarse wheels, be sure to grind the surface with finer abrasive materials, taking into account the grinding steps (the difference in grain should be no more than 100 units).

Fiber cleaning discs siamet velcro cleaning discs siatop

The recommended speed for siamet wheels is 10,000 rpm. For siatop circles, the speed should be limited to 8000 rpm, as at higher rpm the Velcro at the edges of the circles can burn.

SCM synthetic fiber grinding wheel

Also, special grinding wheels based on SCM synthetic fibers do an excellent job of removing thick layers of paintwork. Due to their structure, these circles are almost not clogged with paintwork materials and practically does not leave traces on the metal, which makes it possible to avoid regrinding the surface with finer abrasives in order to avoid subsidence. As mentioned above, these circles are great for fixing small defects.

The grain size of these materials is already indicated by the letter “K”. They have three grades: K060 (coarse), K100 (medium) and K150 (fine). The same plate is suitable for attaching these discs as for Velcro fiber discs. Working speed. no more than 8 5000 rpm.

Very good for removing old paintwork and scraping flap discs. Sia has siaflap discs. Due to the arrangement of the abrasive petals in a fan-like manner, such discs wear evenly and do not clog. They last 6 times or more longer than regular circles! Working speed with 115 mm discs. up to 13000 rpm.

Removing anti-gravel

Anti-gravel coatings are a problem for many repairmen, as most abrasives will quickly become clogged with particles of this coating. However, there are still materials that will help remove anti-gravel. special wiping discs based on bulk polymer fibers. At Sia they are called siastrip and have a gradation of K040. At 3M, these are Clean Strip discs.

The rough structure of such discs allows you to quickly remove old anti-gravel coatings, while they are almost not clogged and do not get very hot. In terms of efficiency and durability, such circles surpass even metal brushes, and their size and shape make it possible to work in the most inconvenient places.

Grinding wheel based on siastrip bulk polymer fibers

The operating speed of siastrip discs should not exceed 6000 rpm. Optimal. 3500. Work should be done with the end part of the circle.

These circles also have a variety. sia-powerstrip circles. The working material on these discs is applied in a circle, which allows you to work faster and over large areas. Recommended working speed. 6000 rpm.

About rust converters and paint removers

To remove rust and clean old paintwork to metal, Western paintwork manufacturers recommend using only mechanical means. grinders, “sandblasting”, brushes.

And none of the leading Western manufacturers of paintwork materials produces or recommends the use of converters or rust neutralizers. This is partly due to the fact that it is generally not customary to repair rotten parts there, but the main reason is that acid residues that are part of such products can provoke corrosion later, after painting. So using a rust converter is tempting (especially if rust is everywhere) but risky.

But there is a wash-off of old paint in the lines of some manufacturers. it softens and undermines the paint, after which it is cleaned off with a spatula or grinder. But the use of such washes is also quite controversial. The aggressive chemical composition of these products does not give full confidence that we will be able to completely get rid of their residues after use. This means that there is no guarantee that our new paintwork will not receive completely unexpected defects in this way. And if you use a wash, then you need to apply it only on the entire surface of the part (otherwise the paint then swells anyway at the borders), which is irrational when removing small defects, for example, a small dent.

Thus, the most effective method of cleaning paintwork defects to metal today is mechanical processing, that is, grinding. Modern grinding materials allow you to do this work at all, not inferior in time to chemical methods, while absolutely without risk.

The defects that await us at this stage can be roughly divided into the following types:

  • minor defects (scratches, chips, small dents),
  • large damage (parts after straightening, thick layers of old repair coatings, putty masses, primers),
  • hotbeds of corrosion,
  • welds,
  • anti-gravel coating,
  • sticky tapes.

Let’s figure out which tools and materials will be most effective in each case.

If the part is new and covered with poor quality shipping primer, then it must also be removed. Read more about it here.

Cleaning minor defects

To remove small defects on the paintwork, an eccentric rotary vibration machine with an eccentric stroke of 5-8 mm, a rigid plate (for example, 115 mm in diameter) and grinding wheels of gradation P80 and P150 (the former are used in the main zone of the defect, the latter. in the peripheral areas ). Working speed. up to 10,000 rpm.

An example is the Rodcraft 7665 two-handed pneumatic clipper or the electric Festool WTS 150/7, the Sia 7-hole sanding pad and siadrive siafast sanding paper (see table at the end of the article).

Festool professional eccentric sander WTS 150/7 (eccentric stroke 7 mm)

Special circles SCM also effectively cope with this task. over, not only when removing standard paintwork layers with small defects, but also when removing thick layers of repair coatings.

Grinding rules

Cleaning is carried out with confident reciprocating movements with moderate pressure to the surface. There is a direct relationship between the pressure on the wheel and the processing speed: the stronger the clamp, the higher the processing speed. However, in this case, the circle itself will wear out faster. Therefore, do not press too hard on the clipper.

Hold the sander at a slight angle (15-20˚) for effective sanding.

Smooth the boundaries of the transition of the metal to the old paintwork to the most smooth state.

Remember to switch the tool on and off over the work piece. First attach the machine to the surface, then turn on.

Do not work with the face. this can lead to premature wear or damage to the wheel.

Observe the recommended rpm for each lap. If the recommended rotation speed is exceeded, the wheel will quickly wear out and lose its abrasive properties.

To process the paintwork before the subsequent filling, use the P80 gradation discs in the main area of the defect and P150 in the peripheral.

When sanding surfaces that have already been repaired and have thick layers of putty masses on them, the main task will be to get to a reliable coating layer. Indeed, as a result of damage and deformation of the element, the elastic metal could lose its adhesion to the inelastic filler. Sometimes there may be no visible signs of this, however, after you start sanding, all this ins and outs (cracks, peeling of the putty) are found.

Here our surface already shines with a metallic sheen and is treated with sandpaper for better adhesion of subsequent layers. It’s time to start filling the damage. About this. next time.

Cleaning welded seams

Welding points must be processed in order to:

  • remove the scale, since no paint and varnish material has adhesion to it;
  • to minimize further filler work.

Many materials already described today are suitable for cleaning welded seams: siamet and siatop fiber discs, spiraband rollers, siaflap flap discs and siafix discs.

In this case, the area to be treated is usually small, so small siafix discs (50 and 75 mm in diameter) will be the most convenient.

Siafix scraper discs and joint treatment with them

When processing welded seams, special attention should be paid to the force applied to the “angle grinder”, because if the metal is burned, it will again be taken up by scale.

Devices for rough processing

This category includes two types of attachments.

Polishing and Grinding

There are many types of such circles. They can be made of cloth, spongy, felt and with replaceable abrasive.

To work with them, it is necessary to use special pastes with fine abrasives, as well as various liquids. Fine abrasive wheels are used for cleaning and coarse grinding. The use of discs for grinding makes it possible to bring the surface of any material to the desired roughness. Such angle grinder attachments are used for polishing car body.

The features of its use are:

  • May only be used with a grinder equipped with a second auxiliary handle. For safety reasons, the angle grinder should only be held with two hands.
  • It is allowed to remove the protective cover, since the body of the nozzle is one-piece, and the probability of its destruction is very small. However, protection from flying chips is required: gloves, glasses, clothing.

Types of attachments

There are many different attachments and attachments available when working with an angle grinder. Consider their main types, design features and application.

Milling attachments

There are two types of such attachments: discs and cutters.

A hot air gun as a paint cleaner

So, the first thing that was tried in this direction was a technical hairdryer. I have an inexpensive MAKITA hair dryer, model HG5012K 230V. Industrial hair dryers differ mainly in the level of heating.

rust, removal, disc, angle

Technical hair dryer MAKITA

This is what a technical hair dryer looks like. very similar to the usual one with which to dry the hair, however do not do this

This cleaning method proved to be very time consuming and laborious. In addition, you cannot remove the old putty with a hairdryer. If you need to remove paint from an entire wall, for example, 4 squares, then this operation with the help of a technical hair dryer becomes really difficult. After several attempts, I abandoned this venture and realized that it is possible to use a technical hair dryer to remove paint only in small volumes on areas within a few square centimeters. I tried various attachments. it did not bring tangible results.

Dryer attachments

Hairdryer attachments included.

angle grinder or angle grinder as a paint cleaning tool

Those who have an angle grinder, or as it is called an angle grinder, can try to remove the paint using various attachments and sanding the required surface.

Paint cleaning nozzle

Here is a brush cut from hard steel wires. At 10 thousand revolutions, it begins to spark and scatter fragments of hot metal.

When using such a nozzle, everything flies to the sides. Do not try to take too large. you will break the angle grinder. If you have already decided, then it is better to take a nozzle with a small diameter. So you will protect yourself and the angle grinder will not get out of your hands. As a result, the nozzle was not effective for me, or I do not know how to use this brush.

Grinding wheel

A special grinding wheel equipped with 80 sandpaper. When used, it heats up to the point of fire, but removes the paint soundly.

The only thing: when buying such a circle, pay attention to the graininess of the skin. I do not advise taking less than 40, it will wear off quickly, but clean slowly. Personally, I have not found such circles with a grain of P40, so I tried it with what I have. Another negative point is a lot of dust. Prepare a respirator and goggles.

Abrasive attachment for angle grinder

Another type of abrasive. The nozzle has a rough surface, on which round-shaped emery sheets are attached with Velcro.

Sheets are erased quickly, and after one, as you can see, the nozzle is erased. You will not notice in time that the circle has worn off, the nozzle itself goes into battle; It is unlikely that it will be possible to quickly grind the paint with such a device. If you buy abrasive sheets for it or just sandpaper, then buy the maximum thickness.

Application example angle grinder with sanding attachment

The wall was sanded, but it turned out to be difficult to remove the paint with such a thing. In some places it can be seen that the abrasive has reached the concrete.

And this is my combat angle grinder, the Metabo angle grinder. very helpful when cutting grooves in walls for wiring, cutting metal and in general in life.

Overview of grinding and grinding wheels for an angle grinder

Removing paint from walls or metal surfaces, as well as removing rust, takes a lot of effort and time. Therefore, it is sometimes impossible to do without the use of a power tool. As a device to facilitate the process, you can use an angle grinder (angle grinder) with special grinding attachments.

From the walls

First of all, in order to remove paint from the wall, craftsmen try to use brushes with thick twisted wire (discussed above). This method is quite effective, but a lot of dust is generated during roughing work. Therefore it is necessary to use protective equipment (goggles, respirator). It is also recommended to use a vacuum cleaner with a special attachment that completely hides the brush.

In addition to removing paint from walls, you can remove a layer of old plaster, primer or putty with an angle grinder.

Bowl nozzles are also used to remove paint from concrete walls. the angle grinder must be held at such an angle that the paint layer is removed, but the tool does not deepen into the wall.

In addition to roughing work, this nozzle is also used for leveling surfaces, removing various sagging on the wall, for removing plaster, putty, etc.

From metal surfaces

For roughing work on metal, whether it is removing a layer of old paint or removing rust, craftsmen use brushes. They look like a brush made of twisted or non-twisted metal wire inserted into a metal glass, or a disc made of the same wire.

rust, removal, disc, angle

From the craftsmen who used corbels for roughing metal work, you can hear complaints that small pieces of wire fly off the nozzle and bite into clothes.

Depending on what kind of roughing work you want to carry out, the thickness and hardness of the brushes are selected. It should be borne in mind that the metal wire used in brushes leaves scratches on the surface to be treated. Therefore, for removing paint, for example, from a car body, it is better not to use them. They can only be useful for removing rust and paintwork from hard-to-reach places.

For metal-friendly roughing, it is better to use special discs made of silicone carbide fibers (XCS). they are usually black. Also, for these purposes, Clean and Strip discs, which are more resistant to wear, are used. They are blue in color, have a similar structure, but are composed of nylon threads.

This grinding wheel is available in 2 versions: for a drill and for an angle grinder. A distinctive feature of it from other types of nozzles for removing paint from metal is that it does not clog and does not damage the metal in the form of scratches. They also successfully remove welding spatter, rust, various sealants and anti-corrosion coatings.

Clean and Strip discs have good wear resistance and can be used until completely erased.

Often, flap attachments for an angle grinder are used to remove paint from metal. They represent a disc with sandpaper glued on its plane in the form of petals.

For rough surface treatment, nozzles with a large grain size are used. For finishing work, it is necessary to select a grinding wheel with fine sandpaper. Although this sanding disc will wear out quickly and become clogged with remnants of stripped paint, it can be easily repaired. How this is done can be understood from this video.

Paint Remover Tips

Old paint most often has to be removed from either walls or metal surfaces. Different types of angle grinder attachments are used in each case.

Sharpening discs

This category of discs is designed for rough metal work. The sharpening disc can be used for cleaning welded seams, chamfering cut metal parts, and for sharpening tools (drills, chisels, etc.) if there is no grinding machine nearby.

It is worth knowing that when installing such a disc, the revolutions on an angle grinder must be set to the minimum or not exceeding the values indicated on the abrasive wheel.

As a rule, grinding wheels are more often used on small angle grinders, as they are more convenient to use for cleaning metal.

The grinding wheel can be distinguished from the cut-off wheel in thickness (at least 5 mm) and by the presence of a recess in the center for more convenient use of the plane of the disc for sharpening the tool.
