Stand for a drill with my own hands from a shock absorber

Makeshift stand for a drill: how to make your own hands the base and the holder

Before we figure out how to make a stand for the drill with their own hands, it is necessary to know the structure. The machine consists of the following units:

stand, drill, hands, shock, absorber
  • The basis of the homemade machine tool is the base. The part is a platform on which the stand is mounted.
  • The carriage serves as the holder of the hand drill. The unit is fixed on the rack and moves along it with the mechanism of furniture rails.
  • A handle is essential for operating the machine. Lower the drill carriage with the drill on the stand during drilling and return it to the starting position upwards with the handle.
  • Additional assemblies extend the functionality of the machine. It is possible to drill at different angles and mill small parts.

You can assemble a drilling machine from wood, metal or use the base from an old enlarger. An important rule to remember: The more powerful your hand-held drill, the sturdier the tool stand.

Advantages and disadvantages of a homemade stand

Homemade stand for a drill has a number of advantages, the most significant of which should include the following:

  • making such a drilling machine is much cheaper than buying a serial model of such a device;
  • To make such a stand for a drill can be made of improvised means, using components from old and unused equipment, which can always be found in any garage or home workshop;
  • Drawings of such devices of various designs and even video instructions on their manufacture are in the public domain, it will not be difficult to find them;
  • if desired, you can always create a machine from a drill of your own design, which in its characteristics and usability will surpass all the available models.

But, of course, self-made device for fixing the drill has its own disadvantages, which should include the following:

  • In order to produce some parts of such racks, it is required to use lathes, welding and other equipment, which, naturally, increases their cost;
  • Due to the fact that the structural elements of such devices for drilling are fitted not too qualitatively, they often have a backlash, and this has a negative impact on the accuracy and quality of processing performed with their help;
  • homemade stand for the drill is quite limited in its functionality, with its help, for example, it is impossible to perform holes located at an angle.

Making a wooden drill stand: instruction with a step-by-step photo

The easiest to make is a machine made of wood. The drawback of the construction is the weak strength of the material. The wood is deformed by differences in humidity. Over time, the rack will have backlash. It is desirable to use the wooden machine only for vertical drilling of holes.

The order of assembling the wooden construction is as follows:

    For the bed you need a plate. It is made of 20 mm thick edged wood boards. Plywood can be stitched on top to create a perfectly flat area. The size of the board is chosen individually. If the machine is designed only for vertical drilling, the bed dimensions of 50×50 cm will be enough. To perform milling and drilling at an angle, increase the size of the board to 100×50 cm.

  • The carriage is made from a board. The length of the workpiece varies from 50 to 70 cm, but usually the dimensions are tailored to the model of the drill. On the back side of the carriage and on the front side of the stand fix telescopic furniture rails, which serve as a mechanism of movement.

    For a firm fixation of the drill, it is better to make a block. The unit consists of a piece of plate, perpendicular to the carriage with steel angles.

For the block take a square piece of board. They draw a circle in the center. Its diameter should be 0.5 mm less than the thickness of the front part of the drill.

stand, drill, hands, shock, absorber
  • Circle is sawed with a jigsaw. The perfect smoothness of the socket is achieved with a round file. The ready block is fastened to the slide. At the front make a kerf and put a screw clamp.

The carriage with the block is installed on the rack, connecting the elements of furniture rails. It remains to make the control handle, but about this later.

The easiest to make is the one made of wood. The disadvantage of the construction is the weak strength of the material. The wood is deformed by differences in humidity. Over time, play appears on the stand. Wooden machine should preferably be used only for vertical drilling holes.

The order of assembling the wooden construction is as follows:

    For the bed you need a plate. It is made from edged board with a thickness of 20 mm. Plywood can be stitched on top to get a perfectly flat platform. The size of the plate is selected individually. If the machine is designed only for vertical drilling, the bed dimensions of 50×50 cm will be enough. To perform milling and drilling work at an angle, the size of the board is increased to 100×50 cm.

On the back side of the carriage and on the front side of the stand, telescopic furniture rails are fixed, which serve as a movement mechanism.

    It is better to make a block to fix the drill firmly. The unit consists of a piece of board fixed perpendicularly to the carriage with steel angles.

Take a square piece of wood for the block. Draw a circle in the center. Its diameter should be 0,5 mm less than the thickness of the front part of the drill.

  • The circle is sawed out with a jigsaw. Perfect smoothness of the socket is achieved using a circular file. The ready-assembled block is then attached to the slide. Make a cut in the front and put a screw clamp.

The carriage with the shoe is installed on the stand, connecting the elements of furniture rails. Now we need to make a handle, but about this later.

Metal machine consists of similar assemblies, but it is more difficult to make them because of the complexity of processing the material. The advantage of the construction is in reliability, no backlash, which is ideal for installing additional units that expand the functionality of the machine.

The general structure of the metal machine is shown in the drawing, and the order of making the construction is as follows:

  • The stand is welded from a square or round tube of section 32-40 mm. It is possible to weld a larger diameter sleeve to the plate and insert a pipe and clamp it with a bolt.

Now it remains to put all the nodes into one structure and try to fix the drill with clamps.

Assembly of the drill stand

Having chosen the desired drawing and prepared the necessary materials, begin the work. The simplest machine consists of 4 basic elements, including:

  • Stand. It ensures the stability of the entire structure.
  • Bench. Consists of a vertical guide and sliding carriage with a drill.
  • Handle. This element ensures the smooth movement of the carriage. Its presence is optional, but greatly simplifies drilling.
  • Additional elements. Design parts that increase the functionality of the machine. For example, a return mechanism or mounts that set the drilling angle.

Bench

The base is an important part of the construction, because it ensures the stability of the column during operation. Use a metal plate more than 10 mm thick or a wooden sheet of 20 mm. Thickness may vary depending on the load or materials used. The higher the weight of the stand, the stronger the base is made.

attention! The rack is made of improvised materials. The main condition. the base must be strong and withstand the weight of the construction with the tools.

Stand

The main element of the machine, allowing to move the drill smoothly in the vertical plane. Carriage movement is provided by furniture rails. The carriage itself is placed in front of the uprights or between two parallel bars. In the second case, the likelihood of backlash is minimized and the strength is increased.

Step-by-step instructions on how to make a rack with a carriage in the middle:

  • To make the carriage take a wooden bar 300x90x45 mm, screwed on the edges of the furniture rails.
  • The vertical uprights are made of two bars with a height of 600 mm, a width of 90 mm and a thickness of 45 mm. The second part of the furniture rails is mounted on top. The opposite bar is mirrored.
  • Movable elements are assembled together and checked for smooth operation. Connect vertical support bars with a piece of wood. This will increase durability and eliminate backlash.
  • The structure is placed on the side, screw the frame. To make the stand stronger, in the back part a prop is put, that firmly fixes the machine parts. Check that all corners are straight.
  • The holder for the drill is made of wood 200x90x20 mm and a plastic handle for the tool. From one edge, a hole is cut to the diameter of the holder and screwed on. This will keep the drill firmly in place.
  • Screw the drill mount to the bottom of the slide with self-drilling screws. To connections in the process of work is not loosened, between the parts set the connecting bar.
  • For convenience, the master can put a shelf. Drill a through hole in the 50×50 mm bar and the wooden plank to the thickness of the threaded rod. A furniture fitting is inserted into the hole. The base of the shelf is screwed to the bar, a stud is passed through and a nut is tightened. On the opposite side of the machine, the stud is passed through the hole in the bar and secured with a wing nut with a flat washer.
  • For ease of use in the back of the machine set a spring return mechanism. Threaded hook is screwed into the upper part of the post and the holder and the spring is tensioned.

attention! The minimum equipment is sufficient for the use of the machine. The master sets the drill with the drill bit down, secures it to the handle. Start the tool and drill the necessary holes.

The video shows the process of assembling the machine:

Handle

To make the use of the stand convenient and enjoyable, the machine is supplemented with a handle. A lever helps to lower the carriage with a minimum of effort. The result is extremely precise drilling.

  • To create the handle, take 2 wooden bars 450x30x15 mm and 204x30x15 mm, respectively, make holes according to the scheme.
  • On the vertical guide measure 270 mm from the top and drill a through hole. Connect the long bar and the guide with an M6x80 bolt, separating it with M6 nuts. The bolt is secured with a double nut.
  • The short piece is bolted to the lever and drill holder.

attention! To simplify the connection and make the movement smooth, mounts on bearings.

After completing the assembly, treat the wooden elements with sandpaper. Remove all burrs, smooth out traumatic corners.

Tips

The machine is made simply and does not require professional tooling skills. But the recommendations of professionals will help simplify the assembly and facilitate its use in the future.

  • As the bed choose heavy materials or a sheet of wood of a large area. You can take the tray from an old microscope.
  • It is important to follow the safety rules. Use eye and hand protection when assembling.
  • Wooden elements are easy to make, but can fail from accidental affirmations. Key components such as the base, carriers and sliding mechanisms are replaced with metal parts where possible.
  • To ensure that the workpiece does not move during work, the work shelf is equipped with stops and a vise for clamping the workpiece.
  • The impact mechanism of the drill helps to cope with particularly hard materials, but loosens the construction, quickly putting it out of operation.
  • The power of an electric drill is less than the factory machines. Do not overload the motor so as not to burn the tool.

With the help of a simple step-by-step instructions with photos will be easy to assemble a rack for a drill with their own hands. The machinist should be guided by the dimensional drawings when preparing parts. If you were able to make a fixture, share your feedback, tips, and assembly challenges in the Комментарии и мнения владельцев.

Wooden balls

Looked at how @CarelessRider, rebuilt his drill press yesterday. Well, I remembered that I have a similar drill lacking carbolite balls on the drill feed knobs. Went to the shop to try on the material and manufacturing method. The technology seems to be simple, but either a radius turning is needed, or a special drill forming a hemisphere when drilling. But I chose the third way, the easiest way. Regular wood drill bits, removed the guide drill bit from it. A bar of dry mulberry clamped in the lathe, the cutter skimmed a square on the round bar and the crown, clamped in the drill with the lathe turned on and turned the round bar into a ball. I sharpened with a lot of stock, sanded at once, starting from 40 grit up to 360 grit, after that I polished to a shine with shavings. In the end (though how can the ball have an end) I drilled and cut a thread M8, I have such a thread on the handles of the lathe. I cut off the balls one by one and already clamped the shank of the tap in the drill chuck, polished the side that I sawed off the array. Screwed the balls on the handles and lubricated with a mixture of linseed oil and beeswax.

To try it I took a piece of acacia wood, but the wood is raw, it turns out just terrible!

The shape is normal, but it is impossible to polish such a ball.

What a drill stand should be able to do?

As a rule, manufacturers focus on the following points when assembling this tool:

  • The fixture should extend the tool’s range of capabilities. For example, a good, solid drill stand makes it possible to mill flat surfaces with a drill;
  • The stand increases the accuracy of the drill bit positioning, placing the tool strictly perpendicular to the work surface, which is especially important when drilling materials with a thickness twice the diameter of the drill bit. Otherwise, the drilled hole can go at an angle, which is unacceptable;
  • The stand is of great help when working with hard materials, when at the initial stage it is quite difficult to keep the drill in one place, avoiding sliding on the surface;
  • Among other things, a quality rack should allow you to drill at different angles, not strictly perpendicular! For example, with modern models, craftsmen are able to make holes with a drill at angles of 60-70 degrees.

Taking into account all of the above mentioned, a modern drill stand is able not just to successfully supplement the tool, but also make it a complete mini-machine, especially if the bearing surface allows conveniently be fixed to the locksmith’s machine tool or has sufficient mass for more reliable fixation.

The typical design of modern models includes the following:

  • Stability of fastening components against vibrations during work with the drill. In this case, the rack completely absorbs all vibrations;
  • A base plate, equipped with T-slots, for fixing the workpiece to be processed. Grooves can be placed along the diagonal of the bearing surface or parallel to the dimensions of the base. In addition, there are variants of supplementing the design of the stand with a vice, but this solution increases the dimensions of the tooling;
  • The possibility of adjusting the height of the drill;
  • Adjustable reach that allows you to work with large workpieces that are unsafe and problematic to hold overhanging;
  • Mechanical hole depth limitation.

However, most often even a high-quality and expensive drill stand is not able to meet all of the above requirements. For example, today there is in fact no such thing as a reliable and universal drill fixing socket from any manufacturer, since the unification of such a device is in most cases impossible!

A small alternative solution for the stand can be a special guide for the electric drill, which solves one simple task. to guide the drill to the desired point. Nevertheless, this does not get rid of fatigue in the hands, which will still appear during prolonged work with the tool.

Dimensions and Constructional Features of the Tools

Today in stores you can find designs from foreign manufacturers, whether from Bulgaria, Germany or China, and domestic, such as brands Enkor, Kalibr, Kraton, etc.п. Let’s look at some of them.

Wolfcraft

In the case of the Wolfcraft steel stand model 5027000 from Germany, the distinguishing features will be:

  • Clamping legs on a solid cast iron plate to secure the existing workpiece.
  • Mechanical drilling depth stop. The unit is equipped with a special millimeter scale.
  • Spring-loaded, ensuring smooth return of the drill to initial position, which is convenient in case of repetition of the same actions.
  • Automatic tool stop mechanism when drilling multiple holes of equal depth.
  • Main support column, Fixed with a steel rail connected to the wheel of the support unit. This ensures the most accurate positioning of the stand when processing the workpiece. At the same time spontaneous turning of the drill during operation is excluded.

Some Wolfcraft models are equipped with a two-stage design with an additional handle to hold and prevent the drill from falling.

Many people know about the long service life and good reliability of German tools. In addition the basic set has no fixing vice and the fit diameter remains the same, without the possibility of adjustment. In the finished assembly, the weight of the stand reaches 8.5 kilograms, which is enough to work with drills not heavier than 1.7 kilograms. This is based on the weight ratio of the support tool to the vibrating tool, which should not be less than 5.22. In the case of impact loads this value increases to 10.

Sparky

In addition to electric drills, the Bulgarian manufacturer Sparky also manufactures a stand for them, which greatly simplifies the tooling. German tool is known for its high quality, and therefore the buyer, in addition to an electric drill from Sparky, can safely take the complete set and stand, especially if you consider its democratic

The design features of Sparky stands include:

  • Main carrier frame is made of aluminum offering limited rigidity.
  • Electric drill is equipped with a clamping clamp without fixation node, so it will need to be periodically tightened during prolonged use of the tool.
  • Complete unification with models from this manufacturer.
  • Presence of return spring.
  • No mechanism for limiting the drift of the drill bit.
  • Only the vise seating on the base plate forces the use of an additional clamping vise.

It is important to note that stands Sparky not recommended for use with drills greater than 1000 watts! Since the weight of the stand is only 6 kilograms, you should select the drill for work with a weight of 1.5-1.6 kg, although the manufacturer guarantees a good stability of the device in pair with a 3-kilogram models.

Caliber

Domestic manufacturer produces its own line of stands for various kinds of power tools, including drills. Of the wide range of models, the most popular is the Kalibr 96202, which offers:

  • Special sockets for fastening the stand directly to the workbench, thus reducing the weight limits of the electric drill used. On this basis, the weight of the stand is only 2 kg.
  • Diagonal placement of T-slots for mounting gripper legs.
  • Graduated scale on top of the mobile slide, greatly speeding up the pre-installation of the drill before starting work.
  • Clamping-type fixation method, ensuring secure fixture of the drill with moderate vibrations.

, Which is the main advantage of products of this brand.

Pros and cons of homemade stands

The main and boldest advantage is money saving. In most cases, you can make a drill stand (drill guide) for an electric screwdriver or drill can be made from improvised materials.

Even if some components are not in the garage, you can buy them for pennies at a metal recycling store (for example, if you decide to make a guide for the moving part of the shock absorbers).

For the manufacture of a tripod (vertical stand) is usually used profile pipe. many have it in stock, and it is not a problem to buy it.

Another advantage of a home-made stand is that you can make it to your own size (for example, if you will carry it in the car).

In this case you do not need to surf the Internet to find the appropriate drawings. you can make the rack without them.

Of the disadvantages it can be noted only that the homemade drilling stand is not designed to perform high-precision operations. And, of course, it is inferior in many ways to a drilling machine.

Advantages and disadvantages of homemade construction

Homemade stands for an electric drill have a number of indisputable advantages, but the most significant are the following:

  • self-made drilling machine is much cheaper than buying a similar serial model;
  • the tripod can be made practically from improvised means, using parts of worn out equipment;
  • the drawing of such a device, as well as video tutorials and instructions on how to make a design can be easily found in the public domain;
  • it is possible to perform the construction according to your own drawings, based on individual parameters, the most convenient to work with.

Of course, like any self-made construction, such a holder for the drill will have some, quite non-critical drawbacks:

  • in the manufacture of some parts for the stand requires the use of lathes, welding and other special equipment;
  • Poor quality or improper fitting of structural elements in such devices provokes the appearance of backlash, which can negatively affect the quality of work performed;
  • Homemade stands may be somewhat limited in their functionality, so do not allow you to make a hole at an angle.

Nevertheless, when properly performed in accordance with the established technology and drawings, such a design will be quite a worthy substitute for the factory device.

The design of the drill stand

In any design must have a bed, a guide rack, the mechanism of movement and the bracket for the drill itself.

  • The frame must be stable, it is desirable with the possibility of fixation of the workpiece, for example, a vice. It is possible to make it from a thick board, plywood, textolite. In the center of the axis of the drill you need to make a hole several centimeters in diameter. The weight of the frame directly depends on the power of the drill, and its dimensions on the list of works that will be carried out on the machine.
  • The drill stand must be positioned strictly vertically to the bed, otherwise the drill will deflect, which will lead to damage to the workpiece and fracture of the drill. And you can make it from anything, whether it is a profile sheet, pipe or wooden bar.
  • Stroke mechanism has no strict conditions, can be either lever or articulated, the main thing is the availability of materials and ease of use in the design.
  • For the bracket is ideal landing on clamps. It is also possible to make a special block by drilling a hole in it a little smaller than the diameter of the drill, as well as a slot so that the hand drill can be inserted into the landing hole. In general, as for the chassis, there are no clear requirements for the type of fixation, only a reliable fixation of the drill to avoid damage to the workpiece is necessary.

In addition to the mandatory parts of the drilling stand for a drill, it can be supplemented by some additional design elements in order to expand the functionality and facilitate the drilling operations. So, you can equip the stand with a lamp for additional lighting of the workplace. If you plan to leave the drill permanently in the machine, you can move its switch to the body of the stand. For safety and convenience of work with occasional use of the machine it is desirable to place a separate socket, which will be located in a suitable place for the work.

Variants of homemade stands

After considering the device of the stand, you can proceed to the most common variants of its execution. Possibilities for the design are largely limited by the availability of materials, complexity of performance and requirements for the work performed.

Thus, if desired, you can assemble even a homemade lathe, with which you can perform some milling work. To do this you need to add the ability to move the workpiece horizontally.

stand, drill, hands, shock, absorber

Another option for upgrading the machine is the ability to drill at an angle by adding to the machine unit a swivel plate with holes to fix the guide stand at the desired angle.

Making such mechanisms is required for more complex tasks, often requires sophisticated equipment and experience in its application. For easier, less frequent work, simple assembly and easy access to materials are important. Below will be just such variants of making mechanisms.

Of common materials

The advantage of such a holder is the absence of strict blueprints, minimum materials required and their easy availability. For its assembly, no special skills are required, and the tools used in the creation of such a holder are at any home craftsman.

The base for the drill in this case is made of wood. Any board will do, the main thing. the ability to withstand the power of the drill with a small margin. Anything can be used for the support and the guide mechanism, as long as it is in a stable position. The stand itself is fastened to the support, on the opposite side the guide is fixed. The support must be able to support the weight of the entire stand and the drill itself.

Bracket for the hand drill is made of thin solid plywood, in which a hole of the desired diameter is drilled. This bracket is mounted to the base using construction angle bars. The lifting arm can be made from a suitable thickness of bar.

The drill is fastened to the bracket with tightening clamps, this connection is very strong, and it can always be dismantled. Keep in mind that when using clamps shrinkage occurs, so the screws should be periodically tightened.

The whole resulting structure is connected using the same construction angles to the base and support.

From a steering rack

Such a device is popular, it’s quite strong and durable. its making requires some experience, suitable materials and tools.

Since this stand is heavier, the bed and the stand are made of metal. A swivel mechanism, such as a handwheel, is installed in place of the steering column mount.

The drill bracket is mounted on the steering link carriage. The guide can be made from a profile sheet. The entire structure is assembled very quickly from readily available materials.

When choosing a homemade stand should be based on the cost of the necessary parts, the required functionality and ease of manufacture.
