The chain does not turn on the STIHL chain saw

The chain on my STIHL chain saw does not turn

Group: Visitors Messages: 548 Registered: 9-October 18 User #: 2,377,098

Greetings esteemed community. Please advise on this issue: Purchased a new chain saw, Hoper type lopper one-handed. Did not start it just checked 2 new chains when installed on the bar, to crank by hand. Both run fine at first and then about 5cm of jamming, like the chain to tighten more and then normal again. The drive and idler sprocket spinning fine. I don’t know what’s causing it? Will it affect the performance of the saw or will it work out? But the difference in tensioning of the chain is of course annoying. Thanks for the answers and help in advance.

There is nothing to jam. The bar is just a bunch of sprockets that the chain runs to.

On my Stihl, it moves freely when you rotate it by hand, it doesn’t jam.

Try to determine where the jamming is, which roller. Put a drop of oil in it. If it’s not too sticky, then fuck it. The power of the saw is enough.

Try to determine where it’s stuck, which roller. Put a drop of oil in there. If it’s not too tight, I don’t care. The saw has enough power.

There’s oil everywhere. Without the chain, it’s fine. Only at some point the chain suddenly gets more tension and jams. Figured it out, need to take a closer look maybe one protruding beam of the idler sprocket is longer by some mm. That’s what gives that tension.

Maybe the chains are just new, not running, dry, unlubricated. Some of the links may be riveted too tight.

Check the chain slack in the book.Start the saw and give it a little gas so it lubricates.Then the chain will find its own place.You’ll have to retighten it.

The oil is well buried everywhere. It’s fine without chain. Only at some point does the chain suddenly get more tension and seize up. I’ve got it figured out, need to take a closer look maybe one protruding ray of the idler sprocket is longer by some mm. That’s what gives the tension.

You just let me know when you find the cause.

I would still look at the drive sprocket. Maybe something got caught in it? The chain tooth so it can’t go in there that’s the tension.

What was the cause of the chain jamming ?,On a Stihl 180 after 10 years of use, this also appeared.

The chain did not come off ? Then the work is done in 5 minutes.Just fixed it myself.Spin the chain around the sprocket and figure out which piece of chain is catching.There may be burrs on the inside of the chain.They need a little flatness adjustment with a file and then try cranking.

If the bar is well lubricated, it will be fine and everything will turn right where it should.On a Stihl I have had this, hand drive the chain, at first it goes fine, then you have to pull with force (does not get into step).

Engine stalls

The engine is running, but at idle or under load the chainsaw stalls. In this case, in most cases the same actions should be performed as described above.

How to adjust your chainsaw depends on when exactly the problems begin:

The carburetor fires:

  • Very late on ignition, the fuel-air mix doesn’t have time to burn through the cylinder, that’s why it sounds like a small explosion.
  • Depleted fuel-air mixture. In the mixture receives very not enough gasoline requires adjustment of the chainsaw, more precisely jigglers, to increase the flow of fuel. Why the chainsaw gasses itself for the same reason.

Chainsaw won’t cut under load

This breakdown is often encountered by novice gardeners who ignore the need for timely maintenance of their chain tool.

There can be several reasons for the malfunction itself. The first of these is a clogged or torn air filter. Dust, small sawdust, insects constantly accumulate on it. all this blocks the flow capacity of the filter. To get rid of the debris, the filter will need to be thoroughly rinsed by leaving it in a container of clean gasoline for 24 hours. After that, the element should be dried and installed back into the construction of the chainsaw.

The second cause of tool breakdown is a faulty fuel filter. Its function is to collect fine abrasives, sand and additives found in even the highest quality gasoline. All this remains on the filter and over time increases to the extent that the element loses the ability to pass the fuel itself. In such a case, the filter must be washed or replaced.

The third cause of failure is the regular use of fuel prepared in the wrong proportion. The ratio of gasoline to engine oil can be found in the instruction manual of the gasoline tool. Violation of the proportion and frequent refueling of the saw with unsuitable fuel leads to deformation of some elements, increased loads on the crankshaft and the entire CPG of the power unit, as well as the failure of the built-in bearings.

How to adjust your chainsaw?

The carburetor is one of the most important elements of a chainsaw, the main function of which is to enrich fuel with air and instantly feed the finished mixture into the cylinder of the power unit.

The following signs are indicative of carburetor malfunctions:

  • problems with starting the gasoline saw. it takes more effort than usual to turn on the motor;
  • Unstable operation of the engine in different modes. noticeable interruptions in the rotation of the engine at idle speed, as well as during the transition to low and high revolutions;
  • sharp increase in the amount of fuel consumed. on average, the amount of fuel increases by 20-30%;
  • Increase of amount of flue gases emitted. the amount of flue gases increases by 50-60%, and the vapors take on a dark blue, brown or black color.

Chain saw adjustments should be made with the engine running in full working order and in a stable condition. Before adjusting you will need to flush or replace the filters, check the integrity of the fuel pipes, and make sure there are no burrs or other damage on the surface of the cylinder and other parts of the chainsaw power unit.

In order to be able to independently adjust the chain saw, its carburetor is equipped with steel spring-loaded screws. Their number and marking depends on the brand-manufacturer of chainsaws.

The procedure for adjusting the fuel system is much the same for most chainsaws.

The algorithm of action should be as follows:

  • At first you need to stop the saw and wait for its engine to cool down;
  • After that, all the screws available in the device of her carburetor should be screwed in the direction of the clock hand to the stop;
  • Then each of the screws should be turned one-fourth or one-fifth of a turn in the opposite direction;
  • Next you need to adjust the operation of the power unit at low rpm. To do this, the appropriate screw must be turned slowly in different directions. Once the motor is as quiet and stable as possible, the screw should be left off;
  • To adjust the idle speed on the chainsaw. the chain is to be looked at. If it is rotating on the rail, then you need to find the screw position where it will stand still;
  • At the end it remains to adjust the work of the engine at high revolutions. This is done by connecting a tachometer to the engine cylinder and start turning the appropriate screw until the readings on the scale of the instrument and the instructions in the operating manual match. For example, if the saw’s manual says that the maximum rpm of the saw should be 12500 rpm, this is the number that should be indicated on the tachometer scale when making the adjustment.

To check the chainsaw’s operation after tuning, you must turn it off and wait for the motor to cool down completely. After that, you need to start the engine and begin to gently squeeze the gas pedal lever. If at the same time the power tool is climbing gently, it means the saw has been adjusted correctly.

Chain lubrication problems

The chain must be routinely lubricated to keep friction between bar and links down, and to prevent early wear on the links.

  • If the chain doesn’t lubricate, it means that there is a problem with the oil pump, it won’t deliver oil because the channel is clogged. Lack of lubrication is the reason why the chain stretches or why the chain breaks. Clean the channels, small chips are always getting in and clogging them. Also can cut oil hose. If you need to adjust or repair your chainsaw’s oil pump, you’d better call Service.
  • Chain oil spurts. Improperly selected lubricant. it is very watery, so it does not so much lubricate the links as it sprays on the wood. Changes the grease to a thicker one.

Stops and does not work at idle rpm:

  • Muffler clogged. Need to clean the soot from the carburetor.
  • Carburetor options are clogged. Need to adjust the idle speed on the chainsaw. It is made with adjusting bolts marked L and H. How to adjust the idle speed, see the article about adjusting the carburetor.

Read why chain saw chain oil does not flow

Situations where the chain breaks often, because the cutting blade is subjected to high loads. The built-in lubrication system in STIHL 260 and Champion 142 chain saws compensates for the destructive effects of heat and friction and thereby prolongs the service life of the bar and guide bar. An oil pump in the tool conveys oil from the tank to the saw head equipped with shanks that reach the sprocket and distribute it over the entire length of the cutter bar.

Good lubrication combined with uninterrupted operation of the system ensures optimum lubricant supply and efficient cooling of the cutting attachment. Otherwise, the tire quickly becomes blunt, overheats, stretches, or bursts altogether.

Symptoms indicating insufficient oil flow into the tire’s tread include:

  • Heavy wear on cutting edges of saw chain.
  • Appearance of a specific burning wood smell.
  • No chain rotation.
  • Increased stress on the motor.

A common reason why chainsaw chain does not receive oil is the presence of debris in the oil ducts, especially in Chinese machinery with limited access to problematic areas. Oil starvation in brand-name equipment, such as the STIHL 180 or Goodluck 4500, which can cause the chain not to turn, can be explained by the following factors:

  • Mechanical damage of the pump worm drive components.
  • Oil filter clogging.
  • The chain saw has a thick consistency of oil and is used at low temperatures.

It is not difficult to make sure that the lubricating system is working properly. To do this, run the saw blade over and check that there are small particles of lubricant on the surface of the material to be machined. If the engine is stopped and oil is dripping heavily from the bar and chain guide bar, you need to think about cleaning the bar groove, the chain drive links or improving the function of the oil pump. In order to improve the process of cutting blade operation it is recommended to use modern oils and lubricants in wholesale as well as in retail, which can be purchased in the online store “Benzo-Zip”.

All Reasons Why the Chain on a Chainsaw Breaks

The main reason that the chain slackens and gets stretched is the use of unreliable oil and substitution of the lubricant recommended by a chainsaw manufacturer with an inferior one. By the way, filling with summer oil while using the tool in the winter time often leads to the fact that the oil pump does not lubricate, which causes the possibility of failure of the oil pump drive and a significant decrease in its performance.

Why the chain on a chainsaw breaks? Such a problem can be explained by the negative influence of the following factors:

  • The chain is severely tensioned.
  • Tailstock mismatch or guide bar problems.
  • Blade overheating because the bar is not lubricated.
  • Chain mismatch between guide bar and sprocket nose, which causes the chain to often spark.

If the user of a chainsaw has faced a situation where the saw chain loses its integrity, cuts poorly or the oil pump does not lubricate the blade, we recommend seeking help from the experts of the profile store “Benzo-Zip”. We employ true professionals who are well-versed in the design features of brand tools, as well as Chinese and Ukrainian counterparts.

Our consultants are ready to provide you with comprehensive information on possible causes of chainring failure and offer you effective methods that you can use at home to restore your chainsaw to working condition. In addition, the catalog store exhibited lubricants and tires for chain saws popular in Ukraine, whose price is pleasantly affordable.

tensioners

Classic tensioner chainsaw chain of the budget class, as a rule, is a threaded bolt with a regulating component, standard or side. Chain tensioning is set with the included wrench or screwdriver.

expensive models are equipped with handy devices, allowing the chain to tighten with a single movement of the lever or by turning the adjusting wheel.

In the first case, the degree of tension is fixed by the counter nut, in the second. the bar and the chain tensioner are blocked in a given position by setting the cover. In both variants a reliable fixation of the chain in a given position is guaranteed, possibility to compensate its extraction with the minimum loss of working time.

Reviews

“A word of advice to all first-time chainsaw owners: whatever chainsaw you own, you need to tighten the chain in time! If you have too much slack or if you have too much slack, both are bad. In general, I advise to tighten after 3-5 cubes of firewood. And choose saws which have the tensioner option. Almost all Husqvarna and Patriot saws have this function.

Take care also with a chain not to loose. it is very dangerous, if it comes off exactly when you saw! You can hurt yourself a lot. Have a great job, everyone!”

Retightening the chain on a regular basis is good for your safety and also reduces the signs of wear and chain damage.

Most STIHL chain saws have a convenient side chain tensioner. You use it to tighten the chain in one movement of the hand. This is done in the following way:

Unscrew the sprocket cover by hand with the wing nut. Turning the thumbwheel to the left tightens the saw chain. Turning the thumbwheel to the right tightens the saw chain. When the chain sprocket cover is tightened, the guide bar is locked automatically.

When you want to change the chain you have to clean thoroughly in advance all contaminants in the groove of the guide bar. In case of heavy dirt deposits in the groove the chain can jump off the tire. There is also a risk that the chain adhesive oil will soak into the dirt beforehand and not reach the especially loaded underside of the guide bar. Check the chain on the market. How to. Extreme heat and wear on the chain and bar can be the consequence. You can clean it with, for example, a screwdriver or other pointed object. The newest chain should be prirabotka for a few seconds before the approach to the wood.

With the motor off, first loosen the chain cover fixing screws with the Allen wrench. To tension the saw chain fully, it is only necessary to loosen the fastening screws a little. Then turn the tensioning screw with a screwdriver.

chainsaw design and general fault classifications

To find the source of malfunction correctly, as well as to perform a proper and good repair chain saw, you need to have a good understanding of its technical specifics. Repair of such equipment is not particularly difficult. Its schematic arrangement is quite simple. For convenience, the nodes in its composition can be divided into three types:

  • The two-stroke gasoline engine is a basic and very important element that is indispensable for further operation. The allowable brands of gasoline are indicated in the very passport of the device;
  • The second equally important component is its working part, which is responsible for sawing the very materials. This may include sawing mechanisms;
  • The third linkage includes fuel, oil, filtering, ignition, exhaust, etc.д.

The malfunctions are classified according to two nodes:

  • Failure of the motor itself. Can’t start, throttles for no reason, heats excessively, smokes very badly, unstable at minimum and maximum load. So all of these areas need to be repaired.
  • Malfunctions in the periphery. Here you can identify a lot of symptoms, according to which there are failures in its operation. For example, if the chainsaw shuts down during operation or loses power, there may be a clog in the gasoline supply system or filter. If it cuts poorly, the chain may just be dull. Repair should begin with the study of auxiliary components, which will require the least time and money.

For convenience, before you begin a repair, divide your chainsaw into sectors and look for the fault directly where the problem is suspected. The manual also gives a brief description of possible breakdowns and how to fix them.

You should also keep in mind that several factors can serve as sources for the same malfunction. It is therefore important to be able to diagnose the cause of the failure, in order to further perform repairs correctly and efficiently. Before you start disassembling and repairing your chainsaw, you should estimate the possible causes and try to work only on them.

How to eliminate the possible risks of buying a counterfeit tire?

In the information field, there are signs that make it easy to distinguish the original brand-name chainsaw from the most authentic fakes. As for the tires, their advantages and disadvantages are manifested directly in operation.

In the domestic market of home appliances about 15% of the total sales volume of chainsaw parts is an unknown origin third-rate counterfeit, producing a standard resource in the best case by half.

It is not economical or safe to operate a chainsaw with a counterfeit tire and chain. A large proportion of injury situations are caused by the use of counterfeit tires and chainsaws.

It is possible to buy a quality and durable brand-name chain saw of the required model without considerable risks at a brand outlet or representative office of a licensed dealer company. In the absence of such a possibility should use the services of a solid, trustworthy online store.

Chainsaw clutch. malfunctions, causes and solutions

1) Chainsaw malfunction: The chain spins almost continuously (the engine can become unstable). Cause: Clutch spring is broken. How to rebuild your chainsaw with your own hands: Replace the broken clutch spring with a new one (for details see “How to Repair a Chainsaw Clutch with a New One” on page 54). If you don’t know how to remove the chain saw clutch (see “How to Disassemble a Chain Saw Clutch” below). Has one clutch spring and two clutch weights on Husqvarna chain saws, three clutch springs and three clutch weights (cams, sectors) on STIHL chain saws. If you can not find the clutch spring itself, you will have to replace the entire clutch.

2) Chainsaw malfunction: Chain is turning almost constantly, sometimes strange noises can be heard in the clutch. Reasons for the malfunction: The clutch cam bevel has come loose (due to overheating) and the clutch spring is coming loose. If the clutch cams turn blue, this would indicate overheating. Overheating all the way to clutch failure can occur if a chainsaw is operated with the chain brake on or a blunt chain. Do-it-yourself chainsaw repair: Replace complete clutch (for details, see “Repairs” on page 36). Below “How to remove a chainsaw clutch”).

3) Chainsaw malfunction: The clutch often “slips”, sometimes the spring breaks. Causes of failure: chainsaw clutch is worn out. Repairing a chainsaw with your own hands: Replace a chainsaw clutch assembly.

How to remove the chainsaw clutch.

In order to remove the clutch on the chainsaw, you must first remove the cutting headset, then the air filter cover and the clutch cover.

Then you need to block the crankshaft so it doesn’t rotate when you unscrew the clutch. To lock the crankshaft, for example with a large screwdriver, you must remove the cover of the hand starter and screw two bolts into the rotor of the ignition system. Or unscrew the spark plug, lower the piston to NFT and lock it there by pushing a rope into the spark plug hole.

Next, unscrew the clutch itself. use a key from the chainsaw kit or a key for the angle grinder, or a self-made key (for example, from an old tire with two screws) to unscrew the clutch clockwise (there is a left-hand thread), to thwart you need a considerable effort.

Then remove the chain saw’s sprocket drum. Chainsaw clutch drum replacement is done according to the rule: replace two bars. replace one drum.

Then put the new clutch and screw it by hand up to the stop (screwed counterclockwise). When doing this you need to lock the crankshaft again to prevent breaking the starter, which is located on the other end of the chainsaw crankshaft, by turning the clutch.

Reassemble everything in the reverse order of disassembly.

To engage the chainsaw fully, you have to pull the chain brake handle forward, start the chainsaw, and then release the brake.
