A set of tools for working with leather.

Hello all! I must admit at once I am an amateur in leatherwork, but recently, this craft has fascinated me. After watching the videos on youtube, my ardor only increased. Naturally, the first steps can be done with minimal tools from the nearest hardware store. But I managed to get a whole set of special tools for the review. Tools, of course, Chinese. There are several different kits available on bangud. Because of the number of items at a glance, eyes are scattered, and it is not clear which one is better to choose. Or take specific items individually. I took a set of, as stated, 30 items, and decided to use my experience to figure out which of them are really needed, and which can be done without. All this goodness is packed into a usual cardboard box, and packed in bags The contents fit nicely on a piece of chipboard 60×40 cm I will begin, perhaps, from the description of all items in the set. I’m not sure if I call it by its proper name, but I will try. I will open the list with knives, as it is one of the main tools in the craft. 1. And so to cut the leather you can use this circular knife. It’s very sharp. Diameter of the blade is 45 mm, maximum cutting depth up to 8 mm. Great for straight cuts. Can also cut curves, but with a big radius limit. Not the least of which is the thickness of the leather. The deeper the blade penetrates into the material, the harder it is to make shaped movements. The advantage of this blade is especially noticeable when cutting thin leather 0.8. 1.6 mm, since the material does not pull on the blade. Which allows you to make a more accurate cutting, and the edge is obtained smoothly without any nicks and microcracks. There are no replaceable blades in the set, but it is not a problem to buy them in domestic internet stores, but the are not happy with them. 2. Next in the list is a saddlery knife. Initially fairly sharpened (one-sided sharpening), on one side of the blade painted with hieroglyphs. Blade width 35 mm. Used for cutting leather, local thinning and rounding corners. Convenient for straight cuts under the ruler. Curved cuts are also possible, but not small radii. Anyway, for me it is more convenient to use the knife with the classical arrangement of the cutting part. When working with the reviewed knife, its handle is practically at right angles to the workpiece. 3. There is also a mock knife with collet clip. In addition to the blade already installed in it, it comes with five interchangeable blades Great for shape cutting. But, as for me, with the thickness of the material more than two millimeters. it is already uncomfortable to work. 4. Needle set. There are seven of them in the set. Directly for the leather, according to the information I found, correspond to two of them. They are distinguished by their triangular wedge-shaped point. They are not particularly sharp, to prevent damage to the thread during e.g. saddle stitching. There are also two straight needles with a large eye, two twisted needles and a bag needle with the characteristic flattened and bent point. Personally, at this stage, the first two are enough for me. 5. A groove cutter with adjustable stop. To create a groove for the future seam. Mostly used on thick leather. At first it seemed to me completely unworkable, no matter how I tried it only scratched the material and made scuffs. Looking closely I saw a burr on the cutting part after the factory sharpening (or where it is sharpened there) a little manipulation with sandpaper and the order really well cuts only a tough skin, with soft material is not always good comes out. 6. Edge cutter. Needed for chamfering the edge of the leather for aesthetic reasons. Similar to the previous tool, works well on hard leather. Especially useful for chamfering the back side of the leather. 7. A tool for parallel seam line marking. Maximum width 20mm. Pretty useful. No sharp cutting part, unlike a groove cutter. And if not zealous when marking, you can smooth out the trimmer line after it. 8. 9. 10. Roller marker (copier). Used for marking for future seam holes. There are three of them in a set with different spacing. Two of them are blunt. they just leave marks on the skin, and one of them is sharp enough to make holes in thin material at once. The upper tool, I recklessly mutilated before capturing the photo of its original form. I can only say that it differed from the second only in pitch. My barbaric actions were aimed at achieving a certain goal. The point is that the first two tools had practically the same pitch. 2.4 mm and 2.2mm respectively, the pitch of the third. 3.3mm. I got these values by dividing the length of the segment by the number of marks on it after marking with each tool. So, having two tools with almost the same pitch didn’t seem logical to me, and the lack of marker with 4 or 5 mm pitch was a disadvantage. It was decided to eliminate this oversight by removing the extra teeth from one of them. I broke off the excess with the pliers. I apologize for the hurt feelings peektsionistov, later I fixed it all on an emery). And all would be done, but in the process I got a little confused and broke off the teeth of the wrong marker. As a result, because of their odd number turned out such a nonsense. The other two in close-up. And this is how marking 11 looks like. The awl. A tool known to all. The only difference from the usual ones is the cone shape. Which makes it possible to make holes of different sizes. That’s all I can say about it. 12. Another very useful and handy tool for making holes. According to the barcode. made in Japan. This tool has six interchangeable inserts with diameter of 1.5mm, 2mm, 2.5 mm, 3 mm, 3.5 mm and 4 mm. Used for making holes in belts and buckles. Advantage over the turret, no limited indentation from the edge of the piece. I use it to make seam holes. Much better than an awl. To make the hole press the handle and due to the screw groove on the working part the translational motion of the handle is converted into a rotational motion of the cutter. Of course an even seam to get so problematic, but so far in this way out of the situation. I will come back to this later on. 13. Another tool for edging, the chamfer cutter (corner miter) allows you to cut the corner of the leather with a uniform depth, rounding it. The bevel cutter is designed to work with thick, hard leather, the width of the cut strip is 5 mm. Unfortunately, the sample from my set is badly sharpened. I tried to correct it, but I was not successful. 14. A planer for working the fleshy side of the leather. For shaving leather to the correct thickness before sewing. Complete with a set of ten interchangeable blades. Perhaps because of the quality of the latter I did not fully appreciate the convenience of this tool. 15. 16. 17. Three more groove cutters. This time non-adjustable, that is, without a stop. Sharp, works well on both soft and hard leather. No problem with the fringe side. Although they have a different shape of the cutting part, in fact the grooves are almost indistinguishable 18. I don’t know what this tool is called. And I can only hypothesize about its purpose. Presumably can be used for embossing. Badly sharpened. 19 Wax. Used in the finishing of the product. It has both a decorative and practical function. closing the pores of the leather for moisture protection. There’s a 40x40x15 mm piece in the kit. It’s pretty hard. It is better to rub with it by preheating with a lighter. 20. 21. 22. Slickers for polishing the edge of the leather. Three pieces in a set with different configurations. Circular for mounting on a dremel or electric screwdriver. 23. 24. Thread waxed. It comes with two spools of black and beige. Flat section, braided, width about 1 mm. 25. 26. 27. 28. 29. And the last element. strips of sandpaper for sanding the edge of the leather. All five are of identical performance. have (at a glance) about 80 grit on one side and about 120 on the other. Which of the elements the Chinese consider to be the thirtieth. one can only guess. But it’s not the quantity that makes you happy. For full work this set lacks one very important element. the step puncher. It is with this tool you can achieve even seams and an exact match holes on all elements of the product. I would sacrifice a good half of the set for it. In the near future, I will definitely add these punches to my tool kit. In the meantime, as I wrote above, I use a hole punching machine. But to achieve an even seam with this method I do not get. And it takes quite a lot of time. Another device, which you probably can’t do without in this craft, is a saddler’s pony. Actually this is a clamp for fixing all the elements of the piece while sewing. I made it in about 10 minutes from scraps of handmade boards. And so. After cutting a few scraps of old, unwanted leather I decided to call it a day and do something more exciting. For this one I bought a piece of krazy chorse leather 25×20 cm and 1 thick.6mm. This piece cost me 2.5 plus shipping. The size I ordered without a specific purpose. For a regular purse 12×9 cm piece of leather 30×25 cm will be enough, for example. it will cost about 4 if you order it off. Buying a whole skin can save you money. My first product was a primitive purse. Decomposed, set to work On the cut out parts clearly visible uneven row of holes for the seam Having fixed the parts began to sew and the other side The whole process, from cutting to the last stitch took me no more than an hour and a half. This is what came out of it Of course primitive, but I hope it will not always be like this). Back to the question about the usefulness of all these tools. Of course do not take the opinion of a layman as a guide. But I will give my subjective opinion. I will go by the method of elimination of the most useless elements. I think the clipper will be lying idle for a long time. The sandpaper strips will keep him company too. Planer. Maybe it will rehabilitate itself and I will be able to appreciate its usefulness after I buy good blades. But so far nothing. Two stitch markers with almost the same pitch, I think one would be enough. What’s missing is a larger pitch. A lot of groove cutters, too. For the rest of the tools and materials (thread and wax). no questions yet. I’ll finish here, I already have a couple of ideas for gifts to loved ones. so we need to train further. Thank you all for your attention. П.С.

Leatherworker’s set 37 items, “Not just leather” part 1

Repeatedly bought a purse from cheap materials, but for a short time they all fell into disrepair I wanted to make myself a good and proper size / style purse out of leather, but to work with it you need a special tool. Ordered this kit from the store for review. As a starter quite go, but to buy some tools later will have. And I can say with confidence that I have a new hobby. leather goods, where there are a lot of nuances, important little things, worth to understand and master, for a long winter evenings is great. Standard delivery, one month. Packaging is a package, inside the box, pretty complete and quite heavy. All that are put in the kit. Wooden tool handles are made of beech. Distribute by function: Marking of the material. Line markers/copiers, 3mm, 2mm, 1.5.mm. Groove cutters / socket cutters, angled, shaped. u, U, V, P (6mm). Good sharpening. Examples of cuts on the cattle leather 3mm: corner U-shaped u-shaped V shape U-shaped, 6mm Pipe set, parallel marker/creaser, circular grooving cutter/griver: Plain awl is sharp and polished, penetrates well into the material, Kriser has an adjustable range of 0. 15mm, the plates on the working edge has a taper, but not sharp, an example of marking them: Paznik has adjustable cutter, with a radius of 5. 30mm, designed to cut into the leather semicircular groove and then stitch the leather on this groove, an example of cutting: Edge trimming. Round slicker disc for dremel, cylindrical slicker, flat slicker, polishing wax 25gr.. “Slicker”. a tool for smoothing leather cuts. The grooves on the slicker are designed for processing leather of different thicknesses. Sewing part. Brown and black waxed cord, 50 meters each. A set of needles. Stitches with black thread. Material cutting, embossing Planer spare blades, scalpel spare blades, embossing tool, straight saddler knife, circular 45mm knife. Sharpening and metal cutting tool is excellent, leather can be cut into noodles Disk knife, cattle leather 3mm cutting at a time. Multifaceted rotary punch (1).5/2/2.5/3/3.5 mm) Test on a 4 mm thick strap, hole in 3.5mm and others. made with a single blow with the palm of the hand. Planer. Edge thinning in thin strips. Abrasive plates, double sided. with different grit sizes. For the first tests, I bought two pieces of leather “Krazy Horse” (sheepskin 0).5mm and CPC 3mm) in my closest leather store g.Krasnoyarsk, a very large selection of leather goods and knowledgeable staff. I decided to make a sheepskin case for my phone (at 6.44 inches), since the old one is pretty worn out, but for the pattern will do. Make a marking on the wrong side. I will say right away that the experiments and errors took almost the entire piece of leather. The circular knife is very sharp and the cut should be made only in one side of the ruler at a time, if to pass back and forth there is a chance to spoil the neighboring part, which I did. Glue the “sandwich” of leather-plastic-leather. Adhesive for leather “Krazy Horse” use only water-based, at the worst PVA, other glues soak the skin and destroy the special coating on the front side. Stitch around the perimeter of the workpiece (the first time, by hand, please do not judge severely), glue “bumper holder”. Scalpel cut holes (you need to buy a shaped puncher) Done. As a result, I can say that the reviewed set is very useful, the case is of average quality (the skin 0.5mm thin, need 1mm, plastic insert to insert the full width or very close to the trim). There is still a lot to learn. I am waiting for the template for making a purse, of this kind: There is still a template for a briefcase, but for him I will take when everything will turn out perfectly. Thanks for your attention, there are a few more reviews ahead on other leather tools.
