Trimmer Does Not Develop Speed

What to do if the petrol trimmer is not gaining momentum?

If you have once purchased a trimmer that runs on gasoline, then you probably had to deal with the problem of turning on the trimmer, as well as with such a problem as the gas trimmer does not pick up speed.

That is why this article was created.

So, what to do if the trimmer, which has been working for you for more than a year, suddenly just stops picking up speed, and the engine simply stalls? In this case, you and I should consider a number of problems associated with stopping the motor.

The motor can stall under various circumstances. Sometimes the reason for the improper operation of the trimmer, running on gasoline, is a clogged air filter.

It is the filter that is one of the most important reasons why the gasoline trimmer may stop working.

Various debris very often gets into it, dust particles get there, which also clog the filter, so it needs to be cleaned and washed every month, and maybe more often, it all depends on what power the gasoline trimmer has, as well as how much often you use this device.

If you have done the operations with the filter, but the work of the trimmer, powered by gasoline, remains the same, the petrol trimmer is not gaining momentum what to do?

Then you should try to remove the filter from the device in order to provide the so-called "relief" of the trimmer. Should help.

The next and quite common problem when working with a gasoline trimmer is that it simply stalls and does not give any signs of life.

In this case, the problem might be:

The last and most common reason for a petrol trimmer breakage is that the cable in the carburetor section has simply fallen asleep.

Therefore, make sure in advance that it is well tensioned, but not to the limit, otherwise, if there is too much load on the gasoline trimmer, this small cable may crack and then you will definitely have to contact a service center, and then also throw a lot of money down the drain.

Causes and repairs

I want to share my experience in restoring the required power of the trimmer with a gasoline engine.

Sometime in early June, I began to notice that my trimmer model GT22GES (manufactured by "ECHO") began to lose its former power.

In the process of work, when mowing grass, even with a slight increase in the load (the grass is higher and thicker), the speed dropped and the efficiency of work was no longer what it was before.

Previously, the trimmer did not notice such obstacles at all. With a sharp push on the "trigger" without load, the revolutions increased slowly, as if reluctantly.

I took the User Manual for the trimmer, found the section "Faults and their elimination" in it. I chose a suitable malfunction in the table, which is described something like this: "The engine accelerates poorly or dies out".

Potential causes include clogged air filter, fuel filter, clogged fuel tank drain, spark plug, carburetor, clogged cooling system, clogged exhaust port or muffler.

As it turned out, the list of possible reasons is extensive. where to start?

First, I visually looked at the air filter, drainage hole, air radiator, all this turned out to be in good condition.

Then I decided to look from the end of the list, that is, to check the exhaust system. exhaust channel and muffler.

To do this, he removed the spark plug tip, unscrewed 3 screws and removed the plastic protective cover of the muffler (in the drawing in the Manual under No. 15). Then, unscrewing two long screws, carefully removed the muffler, so as not to damage the two gaskets that are present there.

The premonition did not deceive me. The exhaust channel of the engine cylinder (through which exhaust gases come out of the cylinder) was 30. 40 percent clogged with carbon deposits.

So this is what turned out to be the reason for the frustration of my trimmer!

This is what the exhaust channel looks like

Carefully, so as not to damage the surface of the piston and prevent foreign products from entering the cylinder (in other words, the very carbon), I completely cleaned the exhaust channel from carbon deposits, carefully blew the channel with a pump.

I used a knife as a tool (but only at the edge of the canal), and in the depth of the canal, a wooden and plastic spatula of suitable sizes.

The muffler turned out to be pretty clean both inside and out.

After assembly, I started the trimmer, warmed it up a little and tried to mow. the engine started up like new, the power increased noticeably, it doesn’t cut the grass, but cuts it (3 mm line).

It’s nice that the device began to work perfectly and doubly pleased that he himself was able to find the malfunction and fix it.

It is likely that such a problem may arise in other models of trimmers, because they all have approximately the same design and all trimmers have an exhaust channel and a silencer.

The numbers mean the following: one part of the oil takes fifty parts of gasoline. Hence: 1000 ml (1 liter of gasoline) divided by 50, we get 20 ml, that is, 1:50.

Thus, you can calculate the composition of the fuel mixture (gasoline / oil) in any proportions. To add oil to gasoline not "by eye", you can advise to take a 20 ml medical syringe, draw oil into it and "inject" into a container for preparing a fuel mixture.

Possible causes of a problem with electric streamers

When using the trimmer, on which the electric motor is installed, problems with a set of revolutions also occur. But they are caused by completely different malfunctions, compared to fuel streamers. The electric motor does not develop the required rotation speed in such cases:

  • If the voltage in the supply network is lower than the rated value for the electric motor by more than 10%;
  • In case of malfunctions in the soft start system (if this unit is installed);
  • When there are problems with the brush assembly;

Electric scythe brush unit

  • In case of burning of the engine windings;
  • If wedging of rotating parts occurs.

To eliminate the problem with the voltage, you need to check its value with a multimeter or tester in the outlet from which the electric power is taken. If it is less than the minimum permissible value, then to increase it, you will need to turn off all electrical appliances or install a stabilizer.

A prerequisite for the normal operation of the trimmer is the use of an extension cord with a conductor cross-section corresponding to the power of the streamer motor.

To repair the soft starter, you will need to have the appropriate knowledge in electronics, so it is better to contact a service center. There they will decide on its maintainability or the need for replacement. You can check the button yourself or find the block diagram and try to figure it out.

Soft starter block

The brushes may wear out and contact will be lost as a result, causing the motor to stall. The brushes are easy to replace. The features of the process are determined by the lawn mower used. Along the way, you will also need to clean all contacting surfaces.

If the windings are burnt, if you continue to mow the grass or bushes, the electric motor will quickly burn out. This will be accompanied by the appearance of a burning smell, up to the melting of individual parts. You will need to replace the electric motor.

Wedging of rotating parts occurs for various reasons. To identify and eliminate them, you will need to sort out the drive unit. There are models in which the number of revolutions is automatically adjusted depending on the load, increasing with its increase. at idle, the rotation speed drops.

Shown is an algorithm of actions to identify the most common reasons why the trimmer is not gaining the required speed:

See the trimmer instructions for the continuous running time of the lawn mower. On average, we mow for 15-20 minutes, after which we turn off the trimmer and let it cool for 3-5 minutes. Weather conditions also affect the duration of continuous operation. In hot weather, when mowing tall grass, thickets of weeds, under heavy load, the trimmer overheats faster.

Many lawn mower problems arise from improperly mixed fuel. In two-stroke engines, lubrication is carried out with a special oil (not ordinary engine oil!), Mixed with gasoline. If the oil is not mixed with gasoline, the lawn mower will quickly fail. Mix the oil / gasoline in the proportion indicated in the trimmer instructions. Usually it is 1:40 or 1:50.

The question often arises: the proportion of 1:50 is how much oil and gasoline?

In no case should you store gasoline in a plastic container from under water. When mixing the fuel mixture, a static charge builds up, you can "catch" a spark.

Therefore, at gas stations it is not allowed to fill gasoline in plastic cans, only in metal ones. Before pouring gasoline into a metal canister, it is better to put it on the ground, so static is removed from the body.

But there are situations when simple manipulations with the lawn mower do not help. The engine still won’t start. In this case, it is used to check the power supply and ignition system, guided by the rule "the engine does not work if there is nothing to burn or nothing to set on fire".

Candle

In case of problems with the candle, it is sometimes enough to dry it or clean it with sandpaper and put it back in place, setting the gap correctly. it should be 1 mm. If the spark plug is heavily soaked, it is better to replace it with a new one. With optimal trimmer operation, the candles do not fail so often.

Trimmer Does Not Develop Speed

Motor

The engine is the most important part of any machine. There are several reasons for ICE breakdowns:

  • Incorrect proportions of oil with fuel (for two-stroke);
  • Old fuel mixture;
  • Wear and tear of the piston ring;
  • Scratch marks on the cylinder and piston;
  • Wearing the device.

All this leads to the fact that the engine either does not start, or stalls.

Carburetor

This mechanism is an important part of the petrol trimmer. In order for the carburetor to work properly, several conditions must be met:

  • Disassemble and clean it from time to time;
  • Adjust the idle speed according to the instructions;
  • Refer to the help of the wizard when adjusting.

In the event of a breakdown of this unit, you can do its repair yourself, but only if you have certain knowledge.

One of the reasons for poor carburetor performance is a loose cable. To eliminate the problem, you first need to disassemble the entire assembly, and then, after thoroughly washing all the parts, lubricate and tighten the cable, but not very much, so as not to stretch.

Causes of low trimmer speed

If users complain about the trimmer that does not pick up speed, it means that it works fine at idle, and when you press the gas, it does not develop the necessary power. This can occur as a result of a long idle device without activity. These problems are typical for gasoline vehicles, including Husqvarna 128r, Stihl FS 38 and Hitachi of various modifications.

When working with the trimmer, you need to monitor its behavior all the time. a drop in rpm and unusual noises signal a malfunction in the unit. Sometimes you give the gas, and the trimmer floats. In such cases, work should be immediately suspended, the mechanism should be allowed to cool down, and the search for possible problems should be started. They can be of a different nature, both a technological plan and external factors associated with the conditions and features of the operation of the apparatus.

Filters

A clogged air filter is another reason for the unreliable operation of the device. To check the involvement of this element in the malfunction, you need to start the lawn mower without it. A dirty filter can be washed in gasoline, dried or replaced with a new one.

A clogged fuel filter does not allow fuel to enter the cylinder, and the engine stalls at full throttle due to an elementary shortage of gasoline. This element is located inside the tank on the intake hose. To fix the problem, instead of the old filter, put a new one on the hose or thoroughly rinse the one that was removed.

Fuel system

The functioning of the fuel system is of great importance for the trouble-free operation of the petrol trimmer. Gasoline passes through all its assemblies and parts, so they must be cleaned regularly. In addition, only high quality fuel must be used. To prepare a combustible mixture in a two-stroke engine, motor vehicle oil cannot be used, since it has insufficient qualities.

Dirty air or fuel filter

If the lawn mower is not gaining momentum, the reasons may lie in the contamination of the filter element: air or fuel.

When the air filter becomes clogged, there is a lack of oxygen in the combustion chamber, so the fuel is not fully produced, which prevents the development of the required speed and power.

To check if the reason is the air filter, you need to remove it and turn it on. If the lawnmower is still not picking up speed, it’s not the cause. So you should check the fuel filter element. Here everything is the same, only gasoline acts as oxygen. If this filter is damaged, there will be a lack of fuel, which slows down the development of speed.

Failure in the fuel circulation system

Lack of fuel circulation in the system can also be the reason why the unit is not picking up speed. There are several options for why this happens:

  • Cracks in the hose, which causes air leaks;
  • Clogged fuel pump;
  • Clogged catalyst or muffler.

You can fix the problems yourself. For this you need:

  • Remove blockages from the fuel pump;
  • Renew hoses, pipes for fuel circulation;
  • Clean the muffler and the mesh on it;
  • Install a new catalyst.

Don’t worry if you have such problems. This does not mean at all that the unit is of poor quality. If the Patriot trimmer doesn’t pick up speed, you can fix it yourself without going to service.
