What is the position of the flap on the trimmer

The throttle is a structural element of the intake system of gasoline internal combustion engines with fuel injection and is designed to control the amount of air entering the engine to form a fuel-air mixture. A throttle valve is installed between the air filter and the intake manifold.

At its core, the throttle is an air valve. With the damper open, the pressure in the intake system corresponds to atmospheric pressure when closing. Decreases to a state of vacuum. This property of the throttle valve is used in the operation of the vacuum brake booster to purge the adsorber of the gas vapor recovery system.

The throttle can be mechanically or electronically controlled.

Power Throttle

A mechanical throttle actuator is currently used on most budget machines. The drive involves connecting the gas pedal and throttle with a metal cable.

The throttle elements are combined in a separate unit, which includes a housing, a throttle on the shaft, a throttle position sensor, an idle speed control.

The throttle body is included in the engine cooling system. It also has nozzles for the operation of the crankcase ventilation system and the gas vapor recovery system.

The idle speed controller maintains the set engine speed when the throttle is closed during start-up, warm-up and when the load changes while turning on additional equipment. It consists of a stepper motor and a valve connected to it, which change the amount of air entering the intake system bypassing the throttle.

Electric Throttle

On modern cars, the mechanical throttle actuator is replaced with an electronically controlled electric drive, which allows you to achieve the optimum torque value in all engine operating modes. This ensures a reduction in fuel consumption, compliance with environmental requirements, traffic safety.

Distinctive features of an electric throttle valve are:

  • Lack of mechanical connection between the accelerator pedal and the throttle;
  • Idle control by moving the throttle.

Since there is no rigid connection between the gas pedal and the throttle, an electronic throttle control system is used. The electronics in the throttle control allow you to influence the amount of engine torque, even if the driver does not act on the gas pedal. The system includes input sensors, an engine control unit, and an actuator.

In addition to the throttle position sensor, the control system uses an accelerator pedal position sensor, a clutch pedal position switch, and a brake pedal position switch.

The engine control unit receives signals from the sensors and converts them into control actions on the throttle module.

Throttle module consists of a body, the actual throttle, an electric motor, a gearbox, a return spring mechanism and throttle position sensors.

To increase reliability, two throttle position sensors are installed in the module. Potentiometers with sliding contact or non-contact magnetoresistive sensors are used as sensors. Graphs of the output signals of the sensors are directed towards each other, which allows them to distinguish between the engine control unit.

The module design provides for an emergency throttle position in case of a drive malfunction, which is carried out using a spring return mechanism. The defective throttle module is replaced as an assembly.

Among the whole variety of car parts, one is distinguished, on which the supply of oxygen to the power unit of the vehicle to a large extent depends. The specified element is called the "throttle" and is part of the intake system of an internal combustion engine. In this article we will talk about adjusting the throttle, the way it is "trained", and also try to understand the operation of the throttle sensor and the features of its settings.

1. Throttle position sensor: its functions and principle of operation

The throttle (aka throttle), as a structural element of the intake system of gasoline engines, is designed to adjust the amount of air entering the power unit. Air is necessary to create a fuel-air mixture, which means that the throttle itself takes a direct part in this process. But for the quality and stability of the named element, its position sensor is largely responsible.

Such a device is simply necessary for the system, otherwise accurate metering of the fuel will be a problem. As soon as the throttle position sensor gives a signal, the controller determines the current position of the damper, and based on the rate of change of the signal, the dynamics of pressing the accelerator pedal is monitored, which, in turn, acts as the main factor for accurate fuel metering.

When the motor starts, the controller starts tracking the angle of the throttle deflection, and if it turns out to be more than 75% open, the engine purge mode is activated. According to the sensor signal, indicating the extreme position of the throttle, the controller proceeds to control the idle speed regulator, thus, additionally supplying air to the motor of the car, bypassing the closed damper.

The described sensor is a potentiometric type apparatus including constant and single-turn variable resistors. The total resistance of these elements reaches about 8 kOhm. At one of the terminals of the potentiometer, the controller supplies the reference voltage, and the other extreme terminal of the device is connected to ground. The middle pin is responsible for transmitting a signal about the current position of the throttle, which passes through the resistor to the controller. The signal value, the voltage of which is less than 0.7 V, is regarded as an indicator of a fully closed damper, and if the voltage is equal to or greater than 4V, the control unit considers the throttle valve fully open.

DPS is mounted on the throttle body and connected to its axis of rotation, which has a special groove, which enters the position sensor socket and is attached to it by two screws. Installation of the sensor in place should be carried out with some displacement and through the protective gasket-ring. After it is in its place, it must be turned until the mounting holes of the sensor itself and the holes on the damper body coincide, after which they are connected using fastening screws.

Setting the initial position of the sensor is easiest to do right on the car. After installing it (with the ignition off), the sensor connector is connected, then the ignition is turned on and the voltage at the signal output is checked. The value should correspond to less than 0.7 V, and if the indicator is greater, then you need to orient the sensor to the value you need by loosening the mounting screws.

2. Throttle adjustment

To adjust the throttle, first turn off the ignition of the car, what will ensure its closure, disconnect the sensor connector, immediately check the conductivity between the terminals, and if it is not there, it means that the TPS should be adjusted and adjusted.

Now, when the shutter is in the closed position, you should use the dipstick located between the lever and the screw (also, there is a gasket for the throttle body). Using an ohmmeter (or any other similar device), make sure that there is no voltage here, otherwise, if the device showed its presence, then you can conclude that the sensor is malfunctioning and replace it with a new device. When all is well, the adjustment continues as usual: it is necessary to turn the throttle drive until the value between the terminals specified in the vehicle technical documentation is reached. After completing the adjustment, check the tightness of the screws on the sensor, since during the work they could loosen and loose.

3. What is needed and how to adjust the throttle?

The importance of tuning (or adapting) the throttle is difficult to overestimate, however, not every driver knows what it is. Now we will try to understand this issue.

During the operation of the throttle assembly of any modern car, various types of pollution gradually accumulate on the damper surface – be it dust, soot or technical lubricant. Over time, they all form a fairly decent layer of dirt, which reduces the air gap between the shutter and the air duct of the vehicle. The presence of a gap of the established norm is a very important point in the issue of the normal functioning of the power unit of the machine, because it is thanks to it that the idle speed can adhere to the desired level.

When it is reduced, the computer (electronic control unit) of the car sends a command to open the damper by introducing certain coefficients that take into account changes in its cross section. For some time, the electronic unit manages to maintain an air gap at a constant level, but anyway, sooner or later, the throttle will have to be cleaned of accumulated dirt. After flushing the indicated unit, you will see how the engine speed has increased, and all due to the fact that the throttle section is freed from the unnecessary layer and becomes larger.

The procedure for returning the throttle to the initial (established by the manufacturer) position is commonly called its “adaptation” or “training”. True, the need for such an operation, which involves bringing high idle speed to a standard indicator, is not limited to one only after the washing period of the specified unit, but is also required in a number of other cases. For example, after the car’s battery is completely discharged; after removing or replacing the accelerator pedal; after replacing or reconnecting the vehicle ECU.

The most characteristic signs indicating that urgent adjustment of the throttle is required are the following phenomena: whistle is heard during gas relocation; at idle, the motor behaves inappropriately, or power drops for no reason. Before proceeding with the "training" of the throttle, it is worthwhile to fulfill several mandatory requirements:

– warm the engine well by train for 10 minutes;

"Training" of the throttle and accelerator pedal, it is advisable to conduct before the corresponding "training" idling. In case of disconnecting the sensor cable, which sends a signal about the position of the accelerator pedal, several necessary actions should be performed:

1. To get started, fully release the pedal;

2. Turn the ignition key to the “ON” position and wait a couple of seconds;

3. Turn off the ignition and wait 10 seconds;

4. Repeat the action several more times.

There is nothing complicated in the described procedure, but despite this, she can teach the throttle to open correctly. But in order to “teach” the valve the “Closed” position, it is necessary to perform the following operations:

1. Release the accelerator pedal completely;

2. Turn the key to position "ON";

3. Switch ignition to mode "Off" and wait 10 seconds;

4. Make sure that during these 10 seconds the valve lever moves (a characteristic sound will testify to such a movement).

At this stage of “adaptation”, we can proceed to the direct setting of idling, for which we need a stopwatch and a little patience. The procedure takes place in several stages:

O First, the car’s engine is started and warmed up to its normal operating temperature;

O When the ignition is turned on, for 10 seconds, no actions should be performed;

O Turn on the ignition (accelerator pedal released) wait three seconds;

O Then, five times in a row, fully depress and fully release the accelerator pedal;

O After 7 seconds, the pedal is again fully depressed and held in this position for 20 seconds;

O You need to release the pedal only when the indicator on the dashboard stops flashing, indicating a malfunction (in normal working condition, it should glow steadily);

O Immediately after that, without touching the accelerator pedal, start the engine, allowing it to function in idle mode for about 20 seconds;

O At the final stage of the “training”, having completed all the above steps, you should accelerate the motor (2-3 times will be enough) and make sure that the idle speed meets the standards of the ignition timing. Well, that’s all, on this the throttle adaptation process can be considered completely finished.

4. Throttle Sensor Setup

Why do you need such a setting? Of course, if you are completely satisfied with the operation of the engine, then there is really no need to climb to the throttle. But if you tried to adjust the damper, for example, in order to reduce the engine speed, then the specified procedure will be simply necessary, because of this, there may be an increased fuel consumption, since the sensor “does not see” the throttle valve’s closed position and in vain pours petrol.

You will need a multimeter and a probe to complete the setup. As for the last tool, different engines require different sizes. So, for example, a 0.7 probe is suitable for a 4a-Fe and 7a-Fe motor, and a tool with a parameter of 0.6 is suitable for a 4e-Fe and 5e-Fe power unit. The setup procedure itself involves the following actions:

1. To the contacts of the multimeter, wires with a small “mother” are connected, thanks to which it will be possible to more tightly fix them on the throttle sensor connector;

What is the position of the flap on the trimmer

2. When checking, the multimeter is set to sound mode or to Ohmmeter mode;

3. The multimeter wires are connected to the IDL and E2 terminals, and in most cases it doesn’t matter which wire to connect to which terminal;

4. Now you need to take a suitable probe (the size depends on the type of engine) and insert it between the adjustment screw and the throttle lever.

5. After connecting, start the engine, and then, loosening the two sensor bolts, lead the probe to the end. The last action should be performed slowly and very carefully, moving the probe counterclockwise until the multimeter starts to squeak (when checking in Ohmmeter mode, instead of a sound signal, a change in its readings should be observed). That’s just the appearance of a sound signal or a change in the Ohmmeter readings indicates that you have reached the desired value and the throttle sensor can be locked in this position.
