Electric screwdriver battery adapter: connecting incompatible brands (Makita, DeWALT, Milwaukee)

Surely many have come across the fact that the batteries of one brand do not fit the power tool of another brand. Although the supply voltage and general characteristics are the same, many manufacturers protect their property and implement protection in the form of incompatible connection pads, special sleds and locks, as well as due to different positions of the power contacts. So, using the example of the Makita tool, I will show how you can use batteries from DeWALT and Milwaukee.

The very idea of ​​using old batteries for new “carcasses” of the instrument is not new. And homemade (and remanufactured) batteries are popular among enthusiasts. I often see cases of purchases of power tools for shares in a complete set “without a battery”, the so-called. “Carcass”, for which you then have to purchase expensive original batteries or look for some other way out. Not so long ago I had an article about available adapters and converters for power tool batteries, I decided it would be convenient to clearly demonstrate the operation of such an adapter using the example of the Makita DM18M, the appearance of which is shown in the photo below.

Such converters are popular for several reasons. Firstly, this is the availability of an old instrument for Ni-CD, Ni-Mh models. As a rule, there are many such tools, they have already worked out their own and you can take such a set for ridiculous money. But batteries that have worked for several years, as a rule, become completely unusable. Rebuilding batteries is quite costly, they usually resort to installing a BMS controller and lithium cells of the 18650 or 21700 type inside the case. Such a move is usually welcomed by DIYers and diyvayers. And secondly, there is a wide variety of cordless tools from first-tier brands: Makita, Bosch, Ryobi, Dewolt, Milwaukee. And this whole zoo needs to be docked somehow. And, given that there is also a non-original tool for the batteries of the listed brands, the task becomes more complicated. This DM18M adapter copies the Makita 18V battery docking part and has a similar slide and contact block. A large button is used to remove from the body of the tool, like the original battery.

The kit includes a simple but clear instruction for using the adapter.

The layout resembles a battery, or rather, the upper part for a Makita tool (or compatible), and the lower part allows connecting batteries from DeWALT or Milwaukee.

There is a sticker with the DM18M (Makita) marking, as well as indicating the maximum (20V) and operating voltage (18V). On the reverse side there is a power contact group (“plus” and “minus”).

Of the features, I will single out the presence of a USB adapter for powering gadgets. That is, you can always charge your smartphone, if necessary, from the battery with the adapter installed.

Conventional dimensions. length 100 mm (approximately), height 4 cm, taking into account the lock. When assembled, this adapter slightly increases the size of the battery, but not much. You can work with such an adapter.

The adapter adds virtually no extra weight to the instrument.

To assess the “internals” I suggest disassembling this adapter.

Inside is a small board with a DC-DC converter (low-power,

0.5A) for the USB output, and wires are routed to the contact group (plus “red” and minus “black”). The terminals for connecting the instrument contacts are made in the form of springs, similar to the original batteries.

The adapter reset button is spring-loaded, undocked easily, like the native Makita battery.

This is how the DM18M adapter bundle looks like plus the battery together. Please note that the overall size has slightly increased in height (by about 2 cm).

In the end, I connected it to a good impact drill, bought on Ali for a modest 40 (a detailed review of the drill).

The adapter sits on the tool until it clicks, without any remarks. The battery holds tolerably well (there is a slight backlash). Assembly weight is almost the same as without adapter (battery is heavy, drill is heavy, adapter is light, less than 80 g).

There are two important points to keep in mind when using the adapter. The adapter does not allow you to control the battery charge and does not perform protection functions (there is no cutoff for current, overload, temperature, etc.). It is possible to completely drop the battery “to zero”. And also do not install this adapter on power battery equipment such as large angle grinders, circular saws, which require increased current output from the battery and can cause overheating of the contact group. The power tool is designed to work with original batteries (type 9.0Ah, 12.0Ah). But this adapter is suitable for use with screwdrivers and similar tools. Nickel-metal hydride batteries, which are increasingly used in recent years, have a higher capacity compared to cadmium devices (2.6 to 2.8 ampere / hour). Note that Ni-MH and Ni-Cd autonomous power supplies are similar, since their characteristics and discharge capacity depend on the nickel oxide electrode.
