Wood router for the engraver with their own hands

What is laser engraving on wood

The most labor-intensive engraving is laser machining. this is an innovative way to remove a layer of material. It eliminates deformation, because the object or part is not heated.

But it should be taken into account that different woods are differently amenable to laser engraving. Laser engraving wood is different from laser cutting, so you need the accuracy of focusing the laser beam, the correct selection of optics. Experts do not advise using this method when engraving small elements, and when cutting take into account the thickness of the workpiece.

The laser, as opposed to a burr grinder, provides a unique opportunity to perform:

  • deep relief engraving,
  • wood mosaic
  • non-contact processing without damage to the wood structure.
  • high precision with minimal cutting width.

Nozzles for the engraver and drilling machines with your own hands

Once again I come back to a question that I touched upon many times in my posts on this site. We will talk about the nozzles for the engraver and drilling machines. This topic is probably endless, because in addition to a wide variety of accessories that come with the engraver and drilling machines, or that can be purchased separately in a tool store, craftsmen make them with their own hands. And here everyone tends to do what is most in demand in the performance of certain works. By the way, of those sets that were included in the set of my two electric gravers, numbering a few dozen nozzles, I use mostly five or six, and the rest are just lying around “dead weight”, but in order to be at hand and not get lost, made such, as in the top photo, a simple three-tier self-made stand made of wood. Maybe they’ll be useful someday, but now I mostly use different homemade grinding attachments, “sharpened” for those tasks, which while working with wood I solve with a drill (Profile B-03) and engravers (Kalibr and Hammerflex 113-003). Why exactly homemade?? Because I have not encountered good sanding heads on sale, allowing high-quality performance with a drill and engraver treat concave surfaces and recesses of wooden workpieces. Yes, there are many different cutters that can quickly remove a layer of wood on these surfaces, but there is almost nothing to sand them with. Available tools. sanding drums with replaceable cylinders of sandpaper, burrs and sanding discs are inconvenient, for example, when sanding the recess of the workpiece for a wooden spoon. And manual sanding with sandpaper is too time-consuming and tedious process. This requires a nozzle that is either spherical or oval in shape. And, this nozzle must have the possibility of successive quick replacement of sandpaper with coarse grit with another one, with finer grit. In addition, it is desirable that this bit is easy to make and not expensive. After experimenting with a variety of homemade engraver and drill bits, I came up with the following option, which, in my opinion, is most suitable for the tasks mentioned above. Wooden homemade bases for these bits are easy to make.

Suddenly make these three attachments (burs, bits) for the mini drill (boron, Dremel):

Multiblade sandpaper brush (daisy) on the left is needed for even and silky, (matte, coarse) grinding of metal is very necessary in the household thing. With its help it is possible to renovate any metal surface.

As a side note, I have a drill bit like this:

Amazing Woodworking Tool // Router Copy Carver. Duplicator

it is a 24 volt soviet motor, long and narrow enough so you don’t have to put it in a tube/handle, plus a Chinese collet chuck. Plus homemade regulated power supply on the Kreen12A.

So, to begin with we make the simplest, but, by the way, a childhood dream of an electric file (or a rotary file):

We take the roller out of the lighter (which we use to knock the sparks out of the silicon) and put it on a rod of some kind. It is desirable that the rod has a thread on the end, so that the roller is tightly stuck. Done.

the video of this action and all the rest, which will be described through text and photos below.

I want to impudently point out that all three of these tools (or rather how to make them with your own hands), I invented completely on my own and made 10 years ago. But now I saw on YouTube videos the last 2 years, which people are doing the same (except the daisy) and they have there rave Комментарии и мнения владельцев, millions of views, blackjack and whores So I’m now angry-pity gets to me: my videos with brilliant ideas and really useful tips and crafts Che Che almost nobody looks, and even someone puts and dislikes Subscribe! 1 in karma: LabaKraba (AmolonieX here in English or no words at all).

To cut sanding discs from a sheet of sandpaper we make a puncher (hole punch) and a circular knife:

Hole punch is two boards with a gap of two millimeters between them and a hole for a drill on 1.8 mm (need 2.0 mm, but in the process of making the hole will turn a little). The back end of the drill bit is sharpened to have a sharp edge.

On the end of the drill, which we will press, you need to put a cap under the finger, through the paper, to tighten.

A circular knife is just an arbitrary iron plate with bent and sharpened ends. Bottom line, we have:

Very even and without interfering bent edges (which will be, if you pierce with an awl) the central holes are obtained. The circular knife cuts circles quickly and fairly evenly.

Well, and the hit program making sandpaper petal brushes.

We take the bushing from the spool of thread. On the video the outside diameter of this tube was 12.6 mm, but it turns out they vary a lot in diameter and here in this picture is another, with a diameter of exactly 12.9mm, t. е. Exactly what we need. Wrap two strips of paper on it crosswise with glue between them and get a paper tube base for the daisy which we cut into sleeves (top-right in the photo).

By gluing on these sleeves with a strong joiner’s glue the petals of sandpaper 13 x 20 mm. Not orthogonal, like the ones sold in the store, but as if overlapping. We have:

We put the grain size on several of the blades. Done. The petals sometimes fly off (cf. on the far right in the photo above), so it’s better to use fabric sandpaper. Plus wet the petals with soapy water before use, otherwise they will be salinized (clogged with shavings) and spoil the evenness-silky texture of the ground metal in these places.

Here someone might notice that similar brushes (only with short blades) sell on Aliexpress. But I remind you that I figured out how to make them (glue the bristles tangentially to the sleeve, not orthogonally) and made them 10 years ago, when there was no Aliexpress.

The video at the end shows what texture you get on an aluminum plate from using these 3 brushes of grit 40, 80, 500. The best 500 is just such a pleasant to the touch, silky matte texture Grind it strictly in one direction!

Types of Engraver bits

The tooling for an engraver can have just a huge number of distinctive features. Drill bits and other types of tooling can be classified according to the following characteristics:

An example of this is the diamond engraver cutters, which can be used for machining the face surface and obtaining a surface with a complex shape.

Application of hardfacing allows to increase cutting edge service life essentially, as well as to provide higher cutting conditions. Mini drill bit is used for blind or through holes with a minimum diameter value. The basic classification can be called what kind of technological task is purchased for an engraver nozzle. By providing a variety of this indicator area of application of the graver significantly expands.

By type of material to be worked

When choosing the most suitable set, attention is paid to what materials it is designed to work with. The classification of tools in this case is as follows:

  • Most of the designs are designed to work with wood. For example, a wood engraving router is very commonly used. It can be used to obtain various patterns. If necessary, provides high precision machining.
  • A metal engraver with the appropriate nozzles is used. In such cases more wear-resistant and harder alloys are used for cutting edge manufacturing. When selecting accessories it is important to pay attention to what alloy will be cut. An example is the hardness ratio of aluminum to hardened steel.
  • Quite often tooling on glass is purchased. This material is regarded as difficult to machine. This is why the cutting part is often made of wear-resistant alloys or diamond chips.
  • There are bits for an engraver that are designed to work with stone. Diamond milling cutters for stone are pretty commonly purchased. High hardness of processed surface determines that special requirements are set for the cutting edge.

Intended use according to the type of material to be treated largely determines the tooling price. The most affordable offer is commonly considered a wood drill bit, which is very widely distributed. There are also frequently variants of design intended for work with metals.

By purpose

The tool for metal or wood engraving can be intended for a wide variety of operations. According to this attribute there are the following versions:

  • For engraving works. Very often a pattern or an inscription must be applied to the surface. If the work is carried out in the home workshop, the more suitable tool can be considered an engraver. There is a cutter engraving on metal or wood, artificial or natural stone, glass and other materials. Diamond burrs are often sold as a set, as complex patterns and inscriptions may require bits with different cutting edge geometries.
  • Tools, the nozzles of which are a combination of a solid metal rod and an abrasive tip. In some cases it is necessary to improve the roughness quality of recesses or other complex surfaces. In such cases this type of tooling is used. Its purpose is roughing and finishing of the surface, all depending on the grit size of the abrasive material used.
  • For grinding and polishing work. There is an enormous range of engraver grinding pads that can be found on sale. Various materials can be used in their production. Examples are classical abrasives or felts.

When selecting, it is worth remembering that there are various pastes for engraving and other surface grinding engraver bits. Their application can significantly increase the efficiency of the operation. Select the paste according to the tool used for processing and the material from which the workpiece was made. Before using any paste, pay attention to the instructions for use.

Considering the classification, let’s also pay attention to the fact that there are working tools for professional engravers. They are designed for a multifunctional tool that can be used for a wide variety of operations. The most common set of such equipment is represented by the following combination:

  • Cutters of various shapes and sizes.
  • Abrasive, felt or diamond-coated burrs.
  • Drills, by the use of which an ordinary engraving machine can be transformed into an effective drill for precise drilling work.
  • Wire nozzles, which can be used for surface cleaning.
  • Cutting discs that are designed to remove a part of a product.

If desired, the set can be assembled with the separate purchase of all nozzles. However, some versions are seldom available on the market, which makes them difficult to acquire on their own. Let’s take cutting-off wheels as an example.

Classification of nozzles

There are a large number of varieties of accessories for working with mini-drills. A wide range of products on the market allows you to pick up nozzles for wood and many other materials with which to work engraving equipment. Also some craftsmen make them themselves.

wood, router, engraver, their

Structurally, bits are made up of two parts;

Tools are classified according to two main criteria:

According to the type of material being worked

Cutters for engravers by material are of the following types.

Made of hard alloys (carbide) with small and large working parts. They come in different types of notches. Designed for initial or intermediate treatment of different hardnesses of workpieces.

there are also combined burs, which have a steel shank and a tungsten carbide working part. Their field of application corresponds to the material of the head.

Carbide tooling is high-quality, durable, and among the most expensive consumables for dremel. The shape of the tips determines the peculiarities of its application. With these drills it is good to work on bone, plastic, trace (to mark the contours of the picture). Diamond bits are also of high quality, even if the set they are a part of belongs to the category of cheap consumables.

On the market you can find a set of drills, all elements of which are marked in color. it indicates the level of sharpening. Those marked black are high-performance drills, while green or blue ones are not as sharp. Those marked in yellow are the best choice for finishing your workpieces.

By function

You can use the engraver and its bits not only for engraving, but also for other operations. A breakdown of consumables used in straight grinders is presented in the table below.

Work performed Nozzles used
engraving The above varieties are suitable
drilling work with steel or carbide drills
polishing discs made of felt, cotton, felt, sandpaper, leather and special tools (holders) which can be wrapped (e.g. with felt)
sanding grinding stones (various shapes and materials) and wheels (sandpaper), diamond rings, rubber cylinders
sheet-punching burrs with spherical working part
cutting cutting discs
routing cutters
Cleaning of surfaces (e.g., rust, scale) wire (steel), filament, cloth brushes
Finishing of holes or hollows diamond burrs
grooving tapered burs

Consumables from each group can be used for processing various materials. The milling tool is mainly used by professionals.

Drill bits, which have a flexible shaft, are equipped with any type of consumables that match the diameter of the tool chuck.

Engraving equipment, with the help of which you can successfully perform various technological operations, is actively used today both by specialists and home masters. Although buying such a device on the modern market does not present any problems, many of those who would like to have it in the equipment of their workshop, do otherwise and make an engraver with their own hands.

Homemade engraver with a holder from a dental drill

Despite the simplicity of design, homemade engraver can successfully perform the same technological operations as the engraver serial model. Such operations include, in particular:

  • milling of flat and shaped surfaces, as well as holes and slots of various configurations;
  • drilling and boring of small diameter holes;
  • cutting thin sheet material;
  • Cleaning the product from traces of corrosion and other persistent contaminants;
  • Applying on the machined surface of the inscriptions and patterns;
  • sanding and polishing.

The materials, the treatment of which is able to cope homemade electric engraver, are metal, wood, plastic, ceramic, glass, bone, artificial and natural stone.

Milling tooling for engraver (miniature milling machine) with their own hands

The article will touch on how to make consumables with their own hands. It’s no secret that the Chinese nozzles are of very low quality, and the branded price is biting. So in some cases it will be more profitable to do yourself. Under the scroll you can see my homemade tools, as well as interesting solutions from the Internet.

  • Abrasive nozzles
  • Flap wheel for the engraver
  • The original emery bars on the rubber drum do not live long, so you need to find an alternative solution. From plywood cut a circle of small diameter:

In the obtained slots we glue the emery with epoxy resin:

Petal wheel for a drill

wood, router, engraver, their

The nozzle is larger in diameter. In order not to get a “spread” like in the previous version, when gluing the sandpaper needs to be tightened with a rubber band. This is due to the fact that the base of the cloth absorbs the resin from the cut and coarsens.

  • The good thing about the flap wheels is that they last an order of magnitude longer than a normal emery wheel of the same diameter.
  • Drill file from tape recorder rollers
  • Old bobbin tape recorders have large rubber rollers with a metal sleeve. We put a bolt on the sleeve and glue an emery on the rubber:
  • Cutting discs for the engraver
  • It’s a pretty common topic, but I’ll tell you about it to complete the picture.
  • Take a thin cutting disc for an angle grinder, a compass with two needles, an awl, and unnecessary scissors:

1) Draw circles with a compass (don’t make too big circles, they are not good for work. The best size is slightly smaller than a standard circle) Take care that the center of the circle is in the middle of one of the squares of reinforcement mesh.

2) We cut the disk into sectors with the scissors, and then cut out the circles themselves, which are in the sectors. Metal scissors are good for this work, but you can also do the usual office scissors, but they blunt stronger, so take those scissors, which are not sorry.

3) With a light rotary motion of the awl, begin to make a hole on both sides in turn. The diameter of the hole should be equal to the diameter of the screw. If the hole is slightly larger, it will break.

It is much cheaper to make such circles than to buy them. They also last longer than purchased unreinforced circles.

Ornamental sanding nozzle

A self-tapping screw without a cap is screwed into the plug, and a washer is glued to the base. The chuck jaws will rest on the washer and prevent the self-tapping screw from screwing in deeper.

  • It is most convenient to use such a nozzle on a drilling machine. You can screw a felt nozzle into the plug instead of a self-tapping screw:
  • Polishing nozzle for a drill

Another pretty common topic. The felt from the felt drum is clamped with a bolt with wide washers. The felt is covered with polishing paste, such as GOI paste.

  • What follows are a few examples of abrasive nozzles taken from the internet.
  • Grinding drum for the drill
  • Grinding drum for an engraver

A metal drum with a slit is made on a lathe, into which the edge of the overlap is tucked, and it is wrapped around the drum. It is secured with a rubber band. The same construction can also be made of plywood, as shown in the previous version.

  • Grinding cylinders for an engraver
  • Comrade Marshall suggests making cylinders this way. cited:
  • In order to make this kind of consumables we need: a strong, but as thin as possible cloth (preferably cotton), sandpaper of the required grit, and most importantly, a tube of suitable diameter, which will be on the cylinders during the bonding.

So, we take the cloth and cut it into long 12mm wide strips. Then we cut these strips in the size of the tube diameter with an overlap of about 1-1.5 cm., Pull it tightly over the tube (so it won’t wiggle) and glue our pieces together on the tube with standard PVA.

Next, the task is a little more complicated: it is necessary to correctly make a stencil on which to cut the skins themselves in the future. The stencil is shown in the picture on the right below the tube. Let’s do it this way: we take, cut off a piece of skin the same width as the cloth, but 1 cm longer. We put it on top of the pasted fabric and mark the place where there should be a junction of the two ends of the skins.

After that we make necessary geometrical actions: from a point of a proper joint we spend across a skinning line, from other end of a skinning line, on the same distance we do the same, then we spend in the formed rectangles diagonals and we cut off on these diagonals pieces of a skinning line.

Now, when you put your stencil on top of the cloth glued on the tube, you get a precise diagonal connection of the ends of the skin. Now you have a stencil, which can be outlined with a pen on the back side of the sandpaper.

Collet chuck with their own hands: components and manufacturing procedure

Engraver, or bur machine. a very necessary and useful thing for those who like to do carving on wood, stone, metal and so on. But an engraver is not only good for carving. It can also be a great help when assembling or repairing anything miniature to cut out of metal or plastic needed part that can’t be cut out with scissors. You can also use it to grind minerals, or just beautiful stones. There is a huge variety of attachments for the graver: saw blades, sanding discs, stones of different grains, brushes (both simple and metal), felt discs, different cutters for wood and glass, as well as, of course, drills.

Buy such an expensive thing like an engraver. this is only half the battle (however, to make it yourself, too, is not a cunning matter). Throughout the time of use, it is desirable also to update and replenish the existing stock of drills, cutters and other bits, which are also not cheap. At any rate, they (for some reason)!) cost more than consumables and bits for the same tool of standard size. But you do not have to buy them all. some nozzles can be quite easily made yourself. Of course, such complex tools as a wood cutter, drill or diamond drill for engraving on glass, you can hardly make, but, for example, small saws for cutting wood and plastic, sanding and felt disks, you can easily make their own hands.

Even in the absence of skills. I think everyone is able to cut out the right circle with scissors, drawn with a compass on the workpiece. In addition, some of the consumables are not found in conventional stores that sell this kind of goods. You have to order and wait a long time for them to arrive and if they do arrive, there is no guarantee that they will be good and reliable. The sanding discs I recently received in the mail were so fragile that one of them broke under a light pressure So, if you want something done well. do it yourself! Here’s a look at a few do-it-yourself options for more durable tools today.
