“Bosch Rotak 40 mower”

written by greenfingers32 on 13/10/2011

This mower is only 6 months old and the engine has cut out and won’t restart. I’m not impressed with the quality of the product. it should last longer than 1 season. The Flymo mower we had previously serviced 2 gardens for 7 years and is still going. will convert back to Flymo, anytime.

Guest’s Response to greenfingers32’s Review

Same happened to my brothers,it had the new ergo handle he said he needed to hold buttons in with so much grip his hands went white through lack of blood, might be better on the back but not good on the blood supply to the hands.

“Load of rubbish”

Cuts fine and to the edge but as many before same problem motor burnt out after 18 months only got small garden. I thought Bosch was a good make and worth the extra money. Suspect motors are made in China like most of the junk on sale today.

“Bosch Rotak Mower Motor failed”

written by VVugy on 06/09/2011

Used only 16 times max in 3 years and a segment has completely come away from the comutator on the motor. This is a manufacturing defect and not what I expect from Bosch. A new motor is way in excess of the mower itself so it is now scrap. Until this happened I could not fault it but am now leaving the brand after many years of trouble free service from many other excellent Bosch products. I can only suspect that the motors are manufactured by an external company and quality has been sacrificed due to cost.

“Rotak 40 GC Lawn Mower”

Having bought this m/c in 2009 I have found it to be one of the better lawn mowers I have used. I use the m/c as part of my business and therefore it is used 10 or 12 times a week. The handle is a third it’s original size and will need replacing soon. The cutting width is excellent and negates the need for a strimmer. Height adjustment is very easy and mowing long grass is not a problem, nor is wet grass! A lot of reviews on this site mentions motor failure and today I had the same problem. After stripping the mower down to the motor I found the brushes had worn and was no longer in contact with the rotor. Replacement brushes are not available, only a new expensive motor. But as a cheat I used an old carbon brush cut in two, smoothed down to the right size and fitted inside each holder with the old brush following it and the tension spring replaced. Should last another couple of years? Would I buy another? definitely.

“The electric cable is soldered into the switch making. ”

I have had this machine for nearly 4 years and has worked perfectly. However, there is one major design flaw and that is that the cable is soldered into the switch in such a way as to make it impossible to resolder the wires without breaking the switch. In my case the cable failed at the top where it feeds into the switch box via a rubber protector. This was probably due to the constant twisting and pulling during mowing. What is my solution? Do I need to buy a whole switch housing plus all the cable attached?? Come to think of it, I now realise what they were thinking of when they designed it. This fault is not mentioned in any detail anywhere on the internet and is just brushed over in some reviews. Advice. mow carefully!!

Guest’s Response to Microfish8’s Review

With a nappy pin or thin pointed tool you can remove the original soldered blue/brown wire inside their switch housings by pushing the nappy pin or pointed tool into the holes of the switch wires, once removed you can then on the replacement cable, blue/brown twirl the copper wire ends and push them down into the switch units holes.

Guest’s Response to Microfish8’s Review

If the conductor wires have flashed through the cable outer case, then this is a safety hazard rather than flaw.

Guest’s Response to Microfish8’s Review

interesting. my one has exactly the same problem which makes me think there is a design flaw in the cable. It shouldn’t fail like that just from a bit of twisting, which you have to do to mow any lawn. I was using it there was a flash from that part of the cable and a small fire which burnt through the casing of the cable. My one is also almost exactly the same age as yours.

Guest’s Response to Microfish8’s Review

Get onto the Bosch web site, find your way into the spare parts area, input your m/c details and look at the exploded view of yor m/c. The handle is broken down in various components and below. The switch may be a ‘push-in-hole’ version, sometimes they come out with a bit of tweaking and twisting, most times they don’t.

Guest’s Comment

I have had exactly the same experience. It has just seized up at the start of a mowing session. The machine is only 18 months old and has been used moderately. I have had a Black and Decker mower for 20 years and latterly a Flymo for 15 years I bought the Bosch name without researching. Very disappointing.

LOOKING AT A LARGE AMOUNT OF THE SAME MOTOR FAILURE COMPLAINTS ALL OVER THE INTERNET. Bosch OBVIOUSLY HAVE A MOTOR FAULT. THEY SHOULD REPLACE ALL THE MOTORS FREE OF CHARGE THEY MUST BE AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM? UNTIL THIS COMPANY COMES OUT AND ADDRESSES THIS,THEN SAVE YOUR GOOD MONEY AND KEEP CLEAR OF THESE MODELS.

Guest’s Comment

I think Bosch mowers only have 12 months warranty,no where enough warranty as I am reading many, many of the same motor failure? This sounds as if the company is getting away with a manufacturing fault and and just hope the motor lasts more than 12 months. Not very fair to the consumer, probably better to buy Qualcast their mowers have 5 years warranty, Sometimes these days buying a top branded name does not mean a quality,as it did 25 years ago.

“I bought one of these mowers in September of 2010. ”

I bought one of these mowers in September of 2010, used it about 4 times and seemed ok, but dusting it down this year 2011 and used it 2 times the motor packed up half way through mowing my front lawn. I have had to send it back for a refund. I will now go and buy another make like a qualcast as they are more reliable. I also agree with some of the other reviews about the cutter height it is hard to adjust.

Guest’s Comment

Something is wrong here, used 4 times then the mower rested for winter, come spring 5th use, then motor packs up?this failure is very common.some consumer organisation should be looking into this.To purchase something that’s hardly had much use and is now scrap can not be right.if a new car engine failed after 10 hours use.that company would have a recall.Bosch seem to be getting away with this obvious fault. I wonder what the motor fail rate is?? All the customers who have experienced this motor fault should make a noise about it,they should get the motors looked at by an independent electrical motor engineer. It could be a case of cheap commutator bars, one by one falling off, causing the motor to burn out.The company would blame the customer, when its more than likely poor manufacturing.Lets face it, Bosch mowers are not the cheapest, but on reputation you would not expect rubbish like the Rotak range seems to be.

I have had the Bosch Rotak 40 for over a year and have a very large garden which I like to keep neat trim. In the first few uses I was very impressed with it although the then sharp blade become blunt very quick, but the grass was long and had many stones in there. The cutting width is wide but does not cut too well to the very edge but is satisfactory. The electric cable can become a be a bit stiff also. The grass collection box on this mower is quite large but will chuck grass back on the lawn if it gets full. The height adjuster is a good feature although a bit stiff. Reading some of the other Комментарии и мнения владельцев here about motors packing in is a bit worrying. I hope it was a batch problem but will have to heed advice about cutting long grass which also means I will have to cut the grass more often. I wil report back if I get any issues but have rated the Bosch mower well for now.

Just an update, my Bosch lawnmower has died, motor has gone and costs more than the lawnmower to replace. Problem is I cannot find another mower in this price bracket that is better, may have to buy the new version called ergoflex, damn what do I do, it was a good lawnmower, but expect it to die after a years use. (i borrowed my dads qualcast, nowhere near as good as the Bosch)

The lawnmower was working fine at first, then it made a loud noise and stopped. After investigating, I found that the motor had broken, the brush holders had split and the brushes and springs had collapsed. This looks like a design fault. I also discovered that replacement brush holders could not be purchased. you had to buy the complete motor for £120. I feel this product is not value for money after less than 2 years of use.

“I bought a Bosch Rotak 43 and was expecting good. ”

I bought a Bosch Rotak 43 and was expecting good things, but feel really hard done by. I’ve given it one star because there wasn’t a choice to give less. Take my advice. Don’t buy. The height adjuster if you are a woman or don’t have much strength is stiff, clumsy and ill-considered. I used the mower for two stripes and that was enough. I took it back to the store to complain. An assistant at the shop where I bought the machine said to me that she has to get her husband to do the height adjustment! Ok if you have a husband! Watching the store manager wrestling with it was like a comedy, but he still refused to admit it was a design fault as he didn’t want to give me a refund. Besides, the bar that acts as the fail safe system for the electrics is too thin and acts almost like a cheesecutter. It really feels uncomfortable to your hands. It’s a cheap, plasticky machine with controls not fit for purpose. There are much better machines out there. Buy this mower if you are a fool.

Bosch CityMower 18 lawn mower review

Don’t let the CityMower 18’s toy-like appearance put you off, this compact machine powers over lawns up to 300 square metres with ease. It folds down seriously small and is light enough to carry one-handed, making it perfect for stashing away in space-starved urban gardens.

Why you can trust Gardeningetc

Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test.

Not every garden requires a souped-up beast of a mower with a million volts of power and blades that could propel a helicopter. In a small home, with a small lawn, a simple mower that does the job quickly, without fuss, is just the ticket. Low tech and lightweight, the Bosch CityMower 18 is exactly what you need if your lawn coverage falls under 300 sq m in fact.

For this review I tested the Bosch CityMower 18 on our bigger (approximately 1,200 square metres) lawn in the country but, to play fair, I measured out and mowed a 300 square metre area. In fact, the first time I used this mower was the first cut of the season and the grass was very long, bordering on wild, and more than a little damp. Just to be thorough, I did a further two full cuts of the same area, each a week apart.

Bosch CityMower 18 lawn mower: first impressions

‘Wow, that’s small’ was the first thing I thought when the box was delivered. ‘Handy’, was my second thought, as I tucked it under the stairs to wait until the grass was dry(ish).

Upon opening, I was relieved to note only a few parts required assembling but wasn’t terribly impressed by the feel of the components. There’s an overall thin plastic vibe, especially the battery lid, which is very flimsy and the wheels are far from robust.

On the plus side, this contributes to weightlessness – I can easily lift and carry the CityMower18 with one hand. If you live in an apartment with garden access but no shed, this mower would be perfect for carrying upstairs and through doorways.

Bosch CityMower 18 lawn mower: getting started

The instructions were short and sweet, and construction (popping the handle on and making the grass box) demonstrated using pictures, in a familiar Ikea self-assembly style (but without any missing parts!).

bosch, lawn, mower, motor, citymower, review

I didn’t manage to get a couple screws in the whole way when fitting the handles, but it felt secure enough. Clipping the grass box together would definitely have been easier if I’d had a helper. The battery is supplied partially charged, and only took about 30 minutes to reach full charge so I recommend getting the charger powered up first.

What it’s like to use the Bosch CityMower 18 lawn mower?

Once I worked out to press the central button on the handle and then the handgrip button (not vice-versa as the instructions dictate), the Bosch CityMower 18 powered to life with a promising roar.

This is no hairdryer of a mower; it sounds properly meaty and powered through our lawn’s first cut of the year with surprising ease. No mean feat at the end of February when the skies were blue but the ground still incredibly wet, and the grass was bordering on wild.

Bosch CityMower 18 lawn mower: ease of use

I had it on the middle blade height setting – there are three to select – and it powered through with no problems at all. In the 300 square metre area, I emptied the grass box six times, which felt a little excessive, however that did reduce to three times on the following second and third cuts.

The battery lasted exactly 28 minutes from full charge and was sufficient to get the job done, just. Invest in a second battery if you have a bigger area to cover. The handle was easy to grip and comfortable.

I started by following each line using the wheel imprints of the line before it but soon noticed thin strips of grass were getting missed so started overlapped a little. Given how short the 32cm blade is already, this didn’t help the number of passes required to complete the lawn. However, I was able to move fairly briskly without the engine straining or faltering, which helped speed up the job.

bosch, lawn, mower, motor, citymower, review

Edging was especially impressive, and I was able to get close enough to the path and fence to avoid getting the strimmer out – always a bonus. The grass box was very easy to mount and dismount and also to empty, thanks to a handle grip on the top and bottom.

One thing I did miss was any kind of indicator that the grass box is full. I just guessed based on the time I had been cutting and got it wrong a couple of times, resulting in stopping the mower unnecessarily. Not a big deal, but timewasting all the same.

Additional features on the Bosch CityMower 18 lawn mower

The Power For All battery is interchangeable with other Bosch tools, including drilling, cleaning and other garden tools, which is a nice touch as it means fewer batteries and charging docks to store. The handle is height adjustable for personalized comfort and folds down with quick-release clips for snug storage.

How does the Bosch CityMower 18 lawn mower rate?

Online of the CityMower 18 are pretty favourable and mostly on or above the 90% or 4 Star mark (I checked Argos, Amazon and Ao.com). Most reviewers like that it is lightweight, making it a good buy for older generations, and that it’s pretty quiet so ideal for Sunday morning mowers.

There are a few grumblings that the grass isn’t cut short enough, so if you like to scalp your lawn perhaps give the CityMower 18 a miss. And someone warns the Power For All battery doesn’t fit with Bosch’s professional grade tools, so do check battery specifics before you buy if that’s one of the benefits that appeals.

Overall, I concur with a 4 Star rating. The CityMower 18 exceeded my expectations in terms of performance and easy use, which are surely the priorities if you’re only mowing for half an hour or less? I deducted a star because I didn’t like that there’s no battery power level indicator during use, so you can’t see how long you have left, and the lack of fullness indicator on the grass box was also a tad frustrating.

However, although it doesn’t look man enough for the job, the CityMower 18 gamely conquered our seriously wild, overgrown winter lawn with the ability of a model with twice the power. Once the first cut was complete, subsequent cuts were a breeze.

bosch, lawn, mower, motor, citymower, review

The 30-minute battery life did worry me but would only really be a problem if you’re cutting a lawn bigger than the recommended size. If you are hellbent on flouting the lawn size guidance rules, you can always recharge the battery – in just 1.5 hours – or, potentially, pinch the battery from your Bosch cordless drill. Don’t forget to recharge it afterwards though, or you’ll be cursing when you want to put up a shelf!

Seems to be a theme here and wished I’d checked before I purchased. Bosche Rotak 360, used for a year then it stopped working. Sent it back to Bosche, it’s been there 3 weeks. I called up and asked for a rough eta and was told that they dont have that information as the workshop doesn’t provide that insight. I asked if they could ask for a rough ETA to set mine and other customers expectations and they simply replied that we don’t get that information. Really rude, abrupt and lacking self awareness. Astonishingly bad service.

Useless Bosch Rotak Lawnmower

I recently purchased a Bosch Rotak 37-14 Ergo lawnmower from Argos. I have previously had a Bosch lawnmower for many years and have been very happy with it, hence the reason for choosing one again. However, this model is not fit for purpose. It only had two usable settings for adjusting the height of the cut and one of these cuts i too short, and the other too long. The rest are useless. The grass box does not seem to fit properly and has to be emptied when it is only half full. The handle on the grass box is very flimsy and comes off easily. Sad to report this model does not come close to the previous one.

Rotak 370 ER electric mower

Got a Rotak 370 ER electric lawnmower from BQ (Ireland). I was very sick so the first time I used it was over a year after I purchased it. (I had heen using a strimmer in the interim until i set up the lawnmower). I have a small suburban garden and as I nearly finished mowing the lawn, the engine cut out. Tried to restart it and it wouldn’t start. Opened the lid and the mower had obviously burnt out. On the first use!! It was broken and useless, having spent over €100 on it for just one use! Had no satisfaction from BQ since it was over a year from purchase. So I’m left with a completely useless piece of scrap metal for my money. And absolutely no comeback. I would advise against anybody buying any Bosch electrical garden products as the quality is shockingly bad. I later discovered from YouTube reviews that this seems to be a common problem with this product. Several reviews say that the engine burned out prematurely. Bosch must know about this problem and continue to sell an inferior product. Please avoid purchasing this as it will be a complete waste of money!!

v Ergoflex mower. A light little lithium gem.

I bought the Bosch 36v LI Ergoflex having seen my step daughters in operation. It’s light and there’s no messing around with wires and the beauty is that the battery also fits some of Bosch’s other 36v garden tools so a new set of hedge trimmers are on the way. Bought a Bosch Rotak 37-14Ergo last summer. Overall cuts reasonably well, except at the lowest setting (which is needed in summer with more frequent cutting) where the cut is patchy. The setting one longer than lowest is the best cut. However, the most frustrating feature is the very poor grass collection. The grass box only fills to the end closest to the mower fills this very quickly but the remainder of the grass box is empty. The mower then leaves grass all over the cut area. I purchased a Rotak 430 LI Cordless Lawnmower, and used it for less than 2000 minutes before the motor died. It was just out of warrantee so they wanted £135 to repair it. Don’t be fooled by the well known brand. These cordless lawnmowers are not well made. I wish I had seen the other reviews here before I had purchased one. An expensive mistake 🙁

Another important thing to note. Bosch don’t care about reviews. or customers. Just check how many times they can be bothered to answer customer’s concerns on Trustpilot. The answer is ZERO. That’s a real shame. We have parted with hard earned money and hoped to purchase from a company with some thought for consumers of their products.

Why Is Your Electric Lawn Mower Smoking? 10 Causes

Are you mowing your lawn with an electric mower and noticing some smoke coming from the machine? It’s not just your lawn that’s in trouble – you could be doing damage to the mower, too. But why is your electric lawn mower smoking?

If your electric lawn mower is smoking, it could be due to an overheating motor. When the motor overheats, the insulation around the wires can break down, causing a short circuit. This can cause the wires to overheat and melt, emitting smoke.

This post will discuss ten potential causes of smoking electric lawnmowers. I’ll also give some tips on how to fix each problem so you can get back to mowing your lawn without any smoke. Read on to learn more!

The Motor Is Overheating

One of the common reasons why an electric lawn mower is smoking is because it’s overheating. When an electric lawn mower overheats, the motor can start to smoke.

Some of the things that can cause the motor to overheat include:

  • The motor is dirty: Over time, the motor on an electric lawn mower can get dirty. This can happen if you don’t clean the underside of the mower deck regularly. When the motor gets too dirty, it can’t cool itself properly and will start to overheat.
  • Something is caught in the blades: If something is caught in the blades of your mower, it can cause the motor to overheat. Be sure to check the blades regularly and remove any debris that may be caught in them.
  • The grass is too tall: If the grass is too tall, it can put a strain on the motor. That can cause the motor to overheat and start smoking.
  • The mower is old: An electric lawn mower that’s starting to smoke may just be old. Over time, the parts in the motor can wear out and cause it to overheat.

Here are a few signs that your mower’s motor is overheating:

  • The mower’s blades stop spinning.
  • The mower starts to smell like it’s burning.
  • The mower starts smoking.

How To Fix

If the mower is smoking because the motor is overheating, you’ll need to take it to a repair shop. The technician will be able to diagnose the problem and fix it.

Besides taking it to a repair shop, there are a few things you can do to prevent the motor from overheating:

  • Clean the mower regularly: Be sure to clean the underside of the mower deck and the area around the blades.
  • Check the blades often: Remove any debris that may be caught in the blades.
  • Don’t let the grass get too tall: Cut the grass when it’s no taller than 3 inches (7.62 cm).

The Motor Is Worn Out

Another common reason your electric lawn mower is smoking is that the motor is worn out. Over time, the motor will wear down and eventually need to be replaced.

Here are a few signs that your mower’s motor is worn out:

  • The mower doesn’t run as well as it used to.
  • The mower starts to smoke.
  • You’ve had your mower for a while.

How To Fix

If the motor on your lawn mower is damaged, it will need to be replaced. However, before you replace the entire motor, you should take it to a professional to have it inspected. They may be able to repair the damage and save you some money in the long run.

Besides, a new motor is a big investment, so you want to be sure that it’s absolutely necessary before you make the purchase.

That said, here are a few tips to help you choose the right motor for your lawn mower:

  • Choose a motor with the same voltage as your old one.
  • Choose a motor with the same manufacturer as your old one.
  • Choose a motor with the same model number as your old one.
  • Check the owner’s manual for compatibility.

The Mower Is Overloaded

Another common reason for an electric lawn mower to start smoking is that it’s overloaded. When a mower is overloaded, it can cause the motor to overheat and start smoking.

Some of the things that can cause a mower to become overloaded include:

  • The grass is too tall: If the grass is too tall, it can put a strain on the motor. Try mowing the lawn more often so that the grass isn’t too tall when you do mow.
  • The blade is dull: A dull blade can also cause a mower to work harder than it should.
  • You’re going too fast: Mowing too quickly can also overload the motor. Slow down and take your time when mowing the lawn.

How To Fix

If your mower is smoking because it’s overloaded, consider these tips to prevent it from happening again:

  • Try mowing the lawn more often so that the grass isn’t too tall.
  • Sharpen the blades on your mower.
  • Slow down when you’re mowing the lawn. Take your time, and don’t try to hurry through it.

There’s a Short in the Wiring

Another reason why the mower may be smoking is that there’s a short in the wiring. This can happen if the wires are frayed or damaged in some way, causing an electrical current to arc between them.

The current can create a lot of heat, which can then cause the insulation on the wires to start burning. In addition, a short circuit can also damage the electrical components in the mower, causing them to fail.

How To Fix

If the wiring on your lawn mower is damaged, it’ll need to be repaired or replaced. That said, before you start tinkering with the wiring, it’s important to disconnect the mower from the power source.

Once the mower is disconnected, follow these steps:

  • Inspect the wiring. If you see any damage, such as frayed wires or exposed insulation, it will need to be repaired or replaced.
  • Reattach any loose wires.
  • If the wiring is damaged beyond repair, you’ll need to purchase new wiring and have it installed by a professional.

You Have Worn-Out Blades

Another common reason for an electric lawn mower to start smoking is worn-out blades. When the blades on your lawn mower are worn out, they can cause the motor to overwork, which can lead to it overheating and smoking.

Additional signs that your mower’s blades are worn out include:

  • The mower isn’t cutting the grass well.
  • The mower is leaving streaks in the grass.
  • The mower is making a lot of noise.

How To Fix

If the blades on your lawn mower are damaged, they’ll need to be replaced. That way, you can be sure that they’re sharp enough to cut the grass properly without straining the motor and causing the mower to smoke.

However, be sure to check the manufacturer’s website or the owner’s manual to find the correct blade size and type for your model of lawn mower.

The Deck Has Accumulated Grass and Debris

The deck of your lawnmower is an important part of the machine. It helps to deflect grass and debris away from the blades and motors, keeping them running smoothly (source).

However, if you don’t clean the underside of the deck regularly, it can start to accumulate grass and debris. That can cause the motor to overheat and start smoking. In addition, it can make it difficult for the blades to spin properly, resulting in a less effective cut.

Here are the typical signs that it’s time to clean your mower’s deck:

  • The deck is visibly dirty.
  • Grass and debris are accumulating on the underside of the deck.
  • The mower is leaving clumps of grass behind.
  • The mower is leaving a trail of debris behind.

How To Fix

If the deck on your lawn mower is dirty, it’s time to give it a good cleaning. As I mentioned, a build-up of grass and debris can cause the motor to overheat and smoke.

Here’s how you can clean your lawn mower deck:

  • Switch off the mower and disconnect it from the power source.
  • Tip the mower onto its side so that you can access the deck.
  • Use a putty knife or a stiff brush to remove any built-up grass and debris.
  • Use a hose to rinse off the deck and remove any remaining dirt.
  • Allow the deck to dry completely before you use the mower again.

The Mower’s Belt Is Broken or Worn Out

Another common reason for an electric lawn mower to start smoking is a broken or worn-out belt. The belt is what drives the blades on the mower, so when it’s not working properly, it can cause the motor to overwork. That can lead to the motor overheating and smoking.

Additional signs that the belt may be the issue include:

  • The blades are not spinning.
  • The mower is making a squealing noise.
  • There is visible damage to the belt.

How To Fix

If the belt on your lawn mower is damaged, it’ll need to be replaced. The good news is that lawn mower belts are relatively inexpensive and easy to find.

Here are a few tips to help you choose the right belt for your lawn mower:

  • Check the manufacturer’s website or the owner’s manual to find the correct belt size and type for your model of lawn mower.
  • Be sure to measure the old belt before you purchase a new one. That will ensure that you get the right size.
  • If possible, take the old belt with you when you go to purchase a new one so that you can compare them side by side.
  • If you’re unsure about which belt to purchase, ask a sales associate at the store for assistance.

Note: For the best results, ask a professional to help you install the new belt. That way, you can be sure that it’s installed correctly and won’t cause any damage to your lawn mower.

The Discharge Chute Is Blocked

The discharge chute on your lawn mower is responsible for directing the grass clippings away from the blades and out of the back of the mower. However, if the discharge chute becomes blocked, it can cause the grass to build up under the deck. That can lead to the motor overheating and smoking.

Here are a few signs that the discharge chute is blocked:

  • The grass isn’t being discharged from the back of the mower.
  • The engine is working harder than usual.
  • Grass is building up under the deck.

How To Fix

If the discharge chute on your lawn mower is clogged, it’s time to clear it out.

Here’s how you can clear a clogged discharge chute:

  • Switch off the mower and disconnect it from the power source.
  • Remove the discharge chute from the mower.
  • Use a garden hose to rinse out the discharge chute and remove any built-up grass or debris.
  • Reattach the discharge chute to the mower.

Caution: Be sure not to tear or damage the discharge chute while you’re clearing it out. Otherwise, you’ll need to replace it.

The Mower Is Old

Another potential reason why your mower is smoking is simply because it’s old. Like any other machine, lawn mowers have a lifespan. And after a certain amount of time, they just aren’t able to work as well as they used to. So if your mower is starting to smoke, it may be time for an upgrade.

That said, here are the tell-tale signs that your mower is on its last legs:

  • It’s hard to start.
  • It doesn’t run as smoothly as it used to.
  • It’s leaving clumps of grass behind.
  • It’s smoking.

That said, be sure to check out When To Replace a Lawn Mower (and How To Choose) for more information on how to tell if your mower is due for an upgrade. Besides, the article provides some great tips on how to choose the right lawn mower for your needs.

How To Fix

You’ve Been Mowing for Too Long

Finally, an electric lawn mower to start smoking if you’ve been mowing for too long. Remember, these machines are not built to run for hours on end. So if you’ve been mowing your lawn for an extended time, it’s not surprising that the motor would start to overheat and smoke.

How To Fix

If you’ve been mowing for a while and the motor starts to smoke, the best thing to do is to take a break. Turn off the mower and let it cool down for a few minutes. Once it’s cooled off, you can start mowing again.

That way, you can avoid damaging the motor and prolong the life of your mower. Besides, a little break can do you some good too.

Summary

An electric lawn mower can smoke due to many factors. A common cause is that the motor is overheating. However, there are a few other potential causes, such as a clogged discharge chute or old age.
