Crocodile attacks lawn mower

Kansas man goes viral for helping people in need by restoring order to their overgrown lawns for free, and it’s mesmerizing to watch

Spencer B. has been in the lawn-care business in Wichita, Kansas since he was in the sixth grade.

We would push our lawn mower down the street and go knock on some doors and get our jobs that way. This helped pay for my college.

A little over a year ago, Spencer B. decided to start mowing one lawn per week for free for someone in need and post the video to YouTube.

Usually with lawn care, the people’s doors I knock on — most of the time they say ‘yes,’ because it’s someone that’s unable to mow their lawn. And it’s been that way for a really long time, he said.

If they were to pay someone to do it, it’s going to cost them a few hundred bucks at least. And it’s either that or wait for the city to come out and fine them a whole bunch of money on their property taxes, he added.

People today are longing for a bit of positivity, and soon Spencer B. found followers flocking to his channel to watch him mow lawns for 30-40 minute chunks. Today, he has almost 3 million followers between his three YouTube channels: SB Mowing, SB Mowing. Shorts, and SB Pressure Washing.

That’s three million followers in about a year and a half.

Call me skeptical, but I honestly didn’t think it would be that appealing watching someone mow a yard, but I’ll tell you watching this guy transform jungles into suburban lawns is fascinating.

And not only is he taking care of people’s grass, he’s taking care of the people too, like this veteran he raised 10,000 for with a GoFundMe.

Then he went ahead and took care of his lawn while he was there.

In addition to the YouTube ad money he gets helping people out, Spencer B. also landed a sponsorship with Hustler lawnmowers for his good deeds.

American Crocodile

Crocodiles (crocodylus acutus) generally fall under the specific reptile group called crocodilians. The crocodilians have 23 species that are found in different parts of the world and two of those are native to the US. These two species are the American crocodile and the American alligator.

The American crocodile can also be found in Venezuela, Jamaica, Cuba, and along the coasts of Central America, South America, and southern Mexico.

American Crocodile Size

One can easily identify a male croc from a female croc just by looking at its size. Males grow larger than their female counterparts. In fact, they can grow as long as 20 feet. However, crocs in the wild can barely exceed 14 feet. Females, on the other hand, can grow to a maximum of 12 feet in length.

American Crocodile Habitat

American crocodiles live in both freshwater and brackish habitats along the coast, including estuaries, lagoons, and mangrove swamps. Some populations have been found in surprising locations, including the cooling canals outside of the Turkey Point nuclear power plant in Florida and in the landlocked, salty lake waters of Lago Enriquillo in the Dominican Republic. Those that live in hypersaline habitats osmoregulate (maintain bodily fresh water content) by drinking available fresh water. Adult American crocodiles eat primarily at night, feeding on various aquatic species including fish (especially mullet), crabs, turtles, and sometimes birds and small mammals. Juveniles eat marine invertebrates and small fish. As predators, crocs play a vital role in the food cycles of their ecosystems. After feeding, the waste they produce fertilizes the aquatic plants growing in the local waterways. These plants are then eaten by herbivorous fish and other aquatic animals, which are then eaten by carnivorous fish that are often prey to the crocodiles. American crocodiles create distinctive and often complex burrows. These may have more than one entrance, either above the surface or subterranean. Burrows provide protection from predators and offer cool, moist respite when the water table declines to a potentially dangerous low level.

Nesting sites are usually wooded areas near small beaches or along narrow coastal creeks. Nests are made from well-draining holes in the ground; if a desirable site is not in close range, crocodiles will build mounds in which to nest. For this reason, crocs lay eggs in the dry season. Females lay between 30 and 60 eggs which hatch after about 90 days, generally at the onset of the rainy season. At the time of hatching, the mother has been observed to open the nest, unearth the eggs and even help the offspring out of their eggs by gently cracking the shells in her mouth. She may then take them to the water in her mouth as well. There have been varying reports of the level of parenting that occurs once the eggs have hatched. With the exception of observed populations in Mexico, the juveniles generally leave the nesting area a few days after hatching and little parental care occurs from this point onward.

What is the Lifespan of an American Crocodile?

Hatchling survival estimates are about a one in four chance of reaching age four. Because nests are sometimes well below the surface in areas already close to water, flooding is a factor in mortality. In addition, hatchlings are prey to various animals including raptors, mammals including raccoons and wild cats, and some larger fish.

On average, the American crocodile can survive for 60 to 70 years. However, in perfect conditions, they can live for as long as 100 years.

What Do American Crocodiles Eat?

Adult American crocodiles eat primarily at night, feeding on various aquatic species including fish (especially mullet), crabs, turtles, and sometimes birds and small mammals. Juveniles eat marine invertebrates and small fish. As predators, crocs play a vital role in the food cycles of their ecosystems. After feeding, the waste they produce fertilizes the aquatic plants growing in the local waterways. These plants are then eaten by herbivorous fish and other marine animals, which are then eaten by carnivorous fish that are often prey to the crocodiles.

When Was the American Crocodile Listed as Endangered?

The United States Fish and Wildlife Service has declared the American crocodile as endangered in 1975. However, its population in Florida has always been limited ever since its discovery in 1869.

Why is the American Crocodile Endangered?

In areas where human and crocodile populations live nearby, crocodiles are often blamed for preying upon domestic animals and occasional attacks on humans. This often overshadows the effect that humans have had on crocodile populations. From the 1930s to the 1960s, American crocodiles were heavily hunted for their skins, decreasing their numbers significantly. Currently, the crocs are hunted on a smaller scale in such areas as Nicaragua, where they are killed illegally during caiman hunting season.

One of the most serious factors affecting their survival, however, is land development and habitat destruction. In Ecuador, for example, mangrove swamp destruction for the sake of aquaculture is decreasing habitat space. In Florida, mangroves are also being destroyed to make way for housing and commercial development. With this increasing urbanization, direct human disturbance, including accidental killings in fishing nets and on highways, is playing a factor in crocodile deaths.

American Crocodiles in Florida

In the southern part of Florida, specifically in the Everglades National Park, both the American crocodile and American alligator coexist peacefully. Everglades National Park is a 1.5-million acre wetlands where the salt water from the Gulf of Mexico meets the freshwater from Florida Bay, providing a perfect ecosystem for both crocodiles and alligators.

The population of alligators in Florida is relatively greater than the crocodiles’. Alligators are also freshwater inhabitants while the latter can survive in different types of water sources. In terms of physical profile, the crocodile can be distinguished primarily through its narrow, triangular snout and lighter color. Alligators tend to have dark skin and a broad snout.

Final Thoughts on the American Crocodile

While adequate survey data are available primarily in the US, there are current studies underway in other countries to obtain accurate counts of crocodile populations. The American crocodile is an endangered species in the US and is considered threatened in most of the other countries in which it is found. Conservation efforts, including crocodile farming, are in effect in some countries and may be expanded to others. Legal protection has been established in most countries, but unfortunately, enforcement is often inadequate. Education continued research on threats to the species and expanded conservation efforts are needed to ensure the continued survival of the species.

A 65 year old man called Albert had a large pond on the western edge of his farm in Florida. Over the years he had the pond converted for swimming. He laid a patio complete with picnic tables, and planted some peach trees. It was an

One late summer evening Albert decided to go down to this idyllic, tranquil beauty spot pondto collect some fruit; so he picked up a bucket and went to collect some peaches.

As he neared the pond, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee. As Albert came closer, he saw it was three of young women skinny-dipping in his pond.

He coughed to alert the ladies to presence and they all went to the deep end. Then one of the ladies shouted to him, ‘we’re not coming out until you leave!’

Interesting Facts About Crocodiles

  • A group of crocodiles is called a congregation. In Will and Guy’s opinion, a more descriptive collective noun for crocodiles is a ‘float’ of crocodiles.
  • Unusually, the gender of crocodiles is determined by temperature. If the eggs are incubated tat over 33c, then the egg hatches into a male or ‘bull’ crocodile. At lower temperatures only female or ‘cow’ crocodiles develop.
  • When the baby crocodiles are ready to hatch they start crying. This triggers their mother to frantically dig them out of their sandy birth-chamber. At this point, if you are lucky, you will see the mother carry the baby gently in her mouth and take it to water.
  • Crocodiles and Alligators can live for at least 50 years. There are claims for much older specimen, but as these are not friendly animals, it’s got to be hard to prove some of the claims for those reaching 100 yrs old.
  • The crocodile’s strategy of hanging around rivers and waiting for a tasty snack has stood the test of hundreds of millions of years. Powerful jaws, full of razor sharp teeth are just the combination to kill unsuspecting animals who come down to the river to drink.
  • Did you know that a crocodile cannot stick its tongue out?
  • Being reptiles, crocodiles are cold blooded, however they are masters at controlling their temperature by cooling off in water, or sun-bathing on the river banks. depending on the weather.
  • Alligators and crocodiles have a unique haemoglobin, which allows them to store more oxygen. The benefit is they can stay underwater without breathing for long periods of time.
  • The phrase ‘soft belly’ could have been coined with the crocodile in mind. There is such a huge contrast between it’s upper ‘dorsal’ side, which is bullet-proof, and it’s lower ‘ventral’ side which is as soft as a puff-ball.
  • Eight times a year a congregation of crocodiles gathers in on the Mary river to the east of Darwin Australia. Instinct tells them that at these unusually high tides means masses of fish are going to leap over the barrier as the tide comes in. On one occasion David Attenborough showed up and filmed about 60 crocodiles feasting on the fish as they tried to leap over the barrier. See more crocodile pictures and interesting facts.

Crocodile Natural History

If you count the alligators and the caiman, there are 23 species of crocodile in the world today. While they can crawl on their bellies, or even walk like mammals, crocodiles are most at home in the water, as you can see from our funny crocodile pictures.

Differences between Crocodiles and Alligators

Crocodiles more pointed ‘V-shaped noses, whereas alligators have a wide U-shaped, snout. If you see a an olive brown body wriggling in a tropical river it’s more likely to be a crocodile. By comparison, alligators are darker and may appear almost black.

Will and Guy think that the teeth are the biggest clue in the croc.v- gator debate. In crocodiles, the lower 4th tooth looks like a peg and juts into the upper jaw. Alligators have a smaller lower jaw, thus when they close their mouth you don’t see much of the lower teeth in general, and the 4th ‘peg’ in particular.

Crocodile Theft

One of the strangest thefts occurred in Darwin, Australia. Police were searching for thieves who stole 18 saltwater crocodiles. The thieves broke into an enclosure at a crocodile farm and took 18 baby reptiles. The little crocs were less than 40cm (15 inches) long, amazingly they could be worth as much as 1,000 each on the black market.

They have obviously found a way to get in and remove 18 crocodiles from the farm. Eighteen crocs of that size could fit in a tub and be moved reasonably easily, police spokesman Matt Crichton told Australian Associated Press. One motive maybe growing them for their crocodile skins which can be exported to Japan or Singapore, where they can be made into boots, handbags and belts.

Alligator Theft? Police Surprised by Live Alligator in Car

Many car drivers are happy to transport their pets by car; dogs are commonplace as passengers all over the world. Recently, however, Will and Guy have established from ‘The Facts’ newspaper in Brazoria, Texas, USA that police who stopped a Buick car for carrying out an illegal u-turn received a surprise when they found that the driver was, in fact, a felon wanted for burglary.

What surprised the police even more was the fearsome reptile roaming free in the car: a live alligator some six feet long. They took this photograph of the alligator, at rest, on the rear window ledge.

Apparently the alligator was ‘happy and content’ and did not make any fuss when he was arrested and taken to a local nature reserve and set free.
