Can You Store A String Trimmer Vertically?

Gas string trimmers can be stored vertically. Many manufacturers including STIHL actually recommend vertical storage (source). Hanging a trimmer on a wall in a shed or even in a portable enclosed trailer is a common organization strategy used by both homeowners and lawn care professionals.

You can buy inexpensive wall hangers for a string trimmer (link to Amazon) if you have a finished garage or storage shed. If the inside walls are unfinished, however (meaning the studs are visible), you can quickly make a DIY solution.

Simple DIY vertical storage

Cut a 2×4 to the length needed to cross over two studs on the wall. Level and nail or screw it into place and you can easily hang your string trimmer with the head down.

Should I Hang A Weed Eater With The Engine Up Or Down?

Homeowners and professionals alike take strong positions on this topic. Honestly, I’ve mounted my STIHL Kombisystem vertically on the wall both with the engine up and with it down. There are arguments for both approaches.

Most manufacturers recommend that you hang your string trimmer with the engine up when storing vertically. This is done to prevent fuel leaks and suspend the trimmer with less supported weight hanging freely.

That being said, I’ve never had any issues hanging mine with the engine down. I’ve done it both ways and have never had any leaks. Still, the generally accepted method is to hang the trimmer with the engine up.

How to store a weed eater for winter

If you are going to leave fuel in your weed eater’s tank over the winter, you definitely want to add a fuel stabilizer. However, manufacturers are increasingly encouraging customers to drain the fuel tank prior to storing for extended periods.

Gas purchased at your local pump can go bad quickly if you leave it stored in the tank over winter. Many people believe that when you mix the gas and oil together in the tank, the oil prevents the gas from going bad. This is 100% untrue. Homemade premix fuel does go bad. It will not last nearly as long as a commercial premix.

Part of the reason for this is the use of ethanol-free fuel in commercial premixes. While it does cost more than the gas you are getting at the pump, it stores longer and does not introduce ethanol into your engine which can cause significant problems over time.

If you are using pump gas that contains ethanol, companies such as STIHL recommend draining the tank, pumping the primer until dry, and then starting and running the engine until all fuel is burned (source).

If you opt for a commercial premix that uses ethanol-free gas, you can usually store the string trimmer for winter with the fuel inside.

Basic Gas Trimmer Maintenance

To keep your string trimmer running well, you need to maintain it. Gas trimmers are especially notorious for their need for maintenance. If you aren’t wanting that part of the bargain, consider the advantages of battery-powered yard tools.

Always check your manual to see what the manufacturer’s thoughts are on maintenance. There’s usually some form of maintenance information, and this is the best thing to check before doing anything else. The manuals often have a schedule that you can follow when it comes to maintenance.

Remember that the two biggest issues that cause break-downs for 2-stroke engines are fuel-system or air-system problems.

Make sure you are using fresh fuel that is properly mixed. You can forego this concern by using a commercial premix like Trufuel (link to Amazon).

Be on the lookout for any signs of fuel leaks or compromises in the primer bulb and fuel lines.

Check the air filter. Some can be cleaned but these are generally inexpensive to replace and it’s good practice to start each season with a new one.

Check the spark plug. If it’s a little grimy you can usually clean it with gasoline and a toothbrush or small wire brush.

Your average garden-variety string trimmer uses a piece of cord to cut through light brush and weeds. As the nylon cord spins at a high rate of speed, it slices right through grass and weeds at the height you’re holding it. This makes it particularly useful for dealing with that explosion of dandelions on the lawn, and guarantees that you can keep the edges of planters tidied up with ease. But it won’t handle woody stalks or dried brush very well. They tend to have a less-powerful motor, too.

Typically, brush cutters cost more than string trimmers… quite a lot more, in fact. So it’s important to decide if your job actually requires that level of power before laying out the money. You might also be able to get a string trimmer that can use brush cutter blades, but dual-purpose models also typically cost more or require attachments. Electric is generally cheaper than gas, but doesn’t always have the same power behind its cutting capability.

What Are You Cutting?

If you’ve got a whole lot of hard, tall, or thick weeds, slender tree saplings, or overgrown bushy material, that’s when you will generally need a brush cutter. A good rule of thumb is that if the material you have to cut is a quarter of an inch in diameter and is brown, not green, you need the brush cutter.

Small or Large Job

Are you only working on a quarter-acre yard, or do you have five acres of property? The size of your job matters, in this case. Gas or Electric?

The vast majority of brush cutters on the market are gas powered, but you can find some crossover electric units that combine the relative quiet of an electric machine with the ability to use either string-trimming or bladed brush cutter attachments. Really, the choice is up to you, although finding a quality crossover unit can be quite difficult.

If all you need is a string trimmer, electric units are widely available and tend to be much lighter-weight than their gas-powered counterparts, which makes them easier to maneuver into tight spaces. However, electric options either use battery packs that wear down quickly, or they’re tethered by a power cord to their power source, which does limit their use somewhat if you’ve got a large area to clear.

Gas units are far noisier than electric, but you aren’t tethered to a power source, which is a perk. They also tend to be hefty, often coming with some form of harness to help you hold on to their drastically-increased weight.

Engine Power

Gas powered brush cutters come with either 4-stroke or 2-stroke gas engines. The main difference in the type of engine is in how they function.

• 4-stroke engines are heavier, give more power output, and run cooler. The design tends to be a bit unbalanced, is more complicated to maintain, and also tends to cost more.
• 2-stroke engines are easier to maintain, tend to operate with much more balance, and have smaller engines, making them well-suited for handheld garden tools.

Electric units tend to be available in 20 volt or 40 volt options, with occasional 60 or 80 volt versions available. 20 volts is fine for the average yard maintenance offered by a string trimmer, but to effectively cut through heavier materials with a metal or vinyl blade, 40 volts or more is recommended, and 60-80 volts is preferred.

Shaft Style

You can either have a straight or curved shaft. Usually a steel shaft, it’s what connects your working head to the cutter’s motor.

Blades often are available in nylon or metal versions. In most situations, a metal blade is better as it can handle the heavy-duty materials with ease. Within that category, a steel blade is the best choice by far.

Nylon is generally meant for more typical lawn care solutions, as they rapidly get dinged up and can break far easier.

Overall, I personally prefer to go for the more heavy-duty options over the lighter ones, as you’ll be regularly replacing lighter cord or nylon blades and can get more longevity over the heavier options.

In order for brush cutters to be more versatile, interchangeable heads and multiple attachments are a must. Selecting a model with an attachment system like this means it’s more affordable over time since it will work for both large and small tasks.

The most convenient and popular options come with a blade attachment and a string trimmer head, allowing you to use the brush trimmer to whack weeds and edge along with cutting heavier stuff.

Since electric models often FOCUS on being just string trimmers, it’s hard to find one that can handle outside attachments. I know, this article is supposed to be about brush cutters, not string trimmers! However, this particular string trimmer has something which most others don’t. Next to its easy-start button, there is a power control that enables you to push up the power to higher levels. Since it can take up to.095 cord and has a dual-cutting capability, amping up the power gives you an almost brush-cutter like potency with a string trimmer. Still, it doesn’t accept other attachments, and it does still run on batteries, so it comes in just shy of the other electric choice.

All in all, if you need the power of a brush cutter, I’d probably pick the gas cutter from Remington over the electric option. But there’s a lot of good aspects of the GreenWorks model with all of its potential attachments, too. Which would you pick – gas or electric?

Although corded electric and battery-powered lawn mowers are flooding the market, the gas-powered lawn mower remains the gold standard for power and performance. A gas mower cuts easily through wet grass and tough strains like St. Augustine and Bermuda. Plus, it comes with features that make mowing easier and more efficient.

There’s a problem, though: Gas-powered lawn mowers may go off the market in the near future.

California has already announced it will ban the sale of gas-powered mowers in 2025, and Honda, a major producer, stopped manufacturing them in October 2022. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, gas mowers consume 1.2 billion gallons of fuel annually. And the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates every gallon burned by a gas mower adds 20 pounds of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.

Throw in the engine noise that disturbs neighbors and disrupts wildlife, and it’s easy to envision the extinction of the gas-powered lawn mower.

For homeowners seeking the power and performance of the best gas lawn mowers, there’s no time like the present to start shopping. Even if your municipality ultimately bans gas mowers, it will probably involve new sales only, so you should be able to keep your mower for its expected life span. Here are some things to look for as you shop.

Walk-Behind vs. Riding

If you have a larger-than-average lawn, consider a riding mower — a major expenditure that’s much more costly than a walk-behind mower. Among the advantages: Faster cutting, a larger fuel capacity, and the convenience of sitting while you mow.

Walk-behind mowers, however, are easier to operate and store. If your lawn is less than an acre, they’re a more economical choice.

Wash-Out Fittings

Wash-out fittings let to attach a hose and clean the underside of the mower deck. Do this after every use and you’ll largely eliminate the grass buildup that eventually requires chipping away with a putty knife or screwdriver.

This cleanout makes the mower perform better and gives you a better-looking lawn. You can buy and install retrofit fittings yourself, but getting them pre-installed makes things that much easier.

Engine Size

Engine size for walk-behind mowers ranges from 125 to 190 cubic centimeters (cc). For riding mowers, it’s measured in horsepower (HP), with the typical range from 10 to 22.

A larger engine develops more torque. It usually has a large deck with a wide-cutting swath, letting you complete tough jobs faster. But larger engines also use more gas and are harder to handle.

Two-Stroke vs. Four-Stroke

Speaking of walk-behind mowers, you may find you have a choice between a two-stroke engine, which isn’t common anymore, and a four-stroke engine.

Two-stroke engines are lubricated by oil mixed in with the gas (you have to remember to premix it), and they’re less powerful, noisier and produce more emissions than four-stroke engines. They also use more gas. You’re better off with a four-stroke engine.

Electric Start

Pull cords aren’t that difficult if the lawn mower engine is in good condition and turns over immediately. But if the spark plugs are old or the carburetor needs cleaning, repeated pulling can be frustrating. Avoid an unwanted workout by purchasing a mower with an electric start feature.

Electric start does require a battery, but most recharge while the engine runs. Some manufacturers provide batteries similar to those for power tools that can be removed and charged remotely.

Automatic Drive

The operator usually supplies the force that drives a classic walk-behind gas mower. It can get tiring, especially on sloped or uneven ground. Enter the self-driving mower, which transfers power from the engine to the wheels via belts to drive it forward.

You can select front-, rear- or all-wheel drive. Rear-wheel drive is most popular because it keeps the mower moving forward when climbing a hill and pushing through heavy grass. If you choose a variable-speed drive, you can set it to one comfortable for you.

Blade Brake Clutch

The blade brake clutch (BBC) is a handy feature if you frequently stop to pick up debris. When you engage it, it uncouples the blade from the motor. It avoids the need to stop and restart the engine repeatedly, which is hard on the engine and generally a hassle.

Grass Management

If you choose a model with a bag, make sure it’s easy to remove and you can mow without it in case you’ve navigating tall, overgrown grass.

Wheel Size

The standard wheel diameter is eight inches, but some non-propelled walk-behind mowers offer nine- to 12-inch rear wheels. These make the mower easier to push over rough terrain and up a slope. Larger wheels also keep the carriage higher off the ground and prevent scalping the grass.

You can find a basic push mower in the 160 range, or spend 1,300 for a premium model with an extra-large deck and all the bells and whistles. Models costing between 400 and 600 likely have all the features you need for comfortable, efficient mowing.

Robin owns his own Landscape Gardening company based in the UK and has over 10 years professional experience working outdoors, creating beautiful landscapes for his clients in the UK. He is also a keen garden-grower and maintains his own fruit and vegetable gardens.
