How to make a simple grain grinder for home.

than 20 years have been used in our household small grain crusher, which was collected for me by a good noble turner from old agricultural parts lying on the territory of the then collective farm economy.

He slightly machined the spline part on a lathe, a couple of discs and sized it, and I put it all together.

The mill does not use centrifugal hammers or rollers. No drop screen. Everything is much simpler.

The basis of the working part, in which the grain is crushed, is steam from a telescopic universal joint of old agricultural machinery. The pair is formed by a segment of a splined shaft and a cardan tube with splines.

A piece of a splined shaft is machined under a cone, with the smallest clearance of 0.2 mm from the splines of the pipe. A blind hole is drilled in the lower part of the shaft and a thread is cut for the prepared corresponding thread on the motor shaft.

Additionally, grain grinding occurs between two discs. One disk is mounted on the shaft and rotates with it. The second disk does not rotate and is located on the lower end of the spline pipe.

By turning the adjusting nuts, the gap between the discs can be changed up to zero.

The crushed grain is removed from the mill by centrifugal force, rotating blades mounted on a rotating lower disk.

How is grain crushing in such a crusher.

Grain from the loading hopper, the design of which can be arbitrary, is poured into the cavity of the splined pipe, in which the machined splined shaft rotates. As you move, the grain falls between the slots of the shaft and pipe, where it is crushed into several large particles. Since the gap between the slots of the shaft and the pipe gradually decreases to the bottom, the size of the cereal fraction decreases accordingly.

The resulting fraction is then crushed between rotating disks, on which deep notches are applied with a metal blade and a sharp chisel. The gap between the discs is adjustable depending on the desired result. You can get half the grain, or flour, but the processing time in this case will increase. A groove is fixed at the outlet window of the crash chamber itself, to output the finished crushed fraction to its collection capacity. The design is placed on a metal frame.

The electric motor can be used with any shaft speed. The lower the rotation frequency, the less flour dust is formed during crushing.

All grain mill design fastens to the electric motor with 3-4 bolts or hairpins. If the electric motor is flanged, then the grain crusher is bolted directly to the bed. When a foot motor is available, the installation process will be different.

  • From the side of the front cover, the bolts securing the cover are unscrewed, and instead they are screwed in long studs of the same diameter.
  • The cover is clamped with stud nuts.
  • The nuts are pressed on the studs, the bed is installed, passing the electric motor shaft through the hole, the bed is fixed with the second screwed nuts.
  • A spline shaft is screwed to the threaded part of the motor shaft until it stops.
  • Four nuts are screwed onto the studs, which serve simultaneously as adjusting and as the basis for the splined tube of the crusher.
  • The whole system is fixed with fifth nuts, which are tightly clamped over the ear of the pipe mount.
